REPO!! The Genetic Opera

Stone here and I am introducing a new series. See, all of us here at the Angry Joe Show love the movies. We do. But we wanted to do something more than just an ordinary review. Everyone does typical movie reviews, we wanted to do something more. There is an army of movies out there on DVD and in the theatres and sometimes the gems get hidden under the clouds of bigger blockbuster movies. So I introduce you to the Movies You Should See series. They will include new and old movies, movies on DVD and movies that just hit the theatre.

So let’s kick it off with one of the most impressive movies I would ever randomly pick up and want to watch – REPO!! The Genetic Opera.

First thing first, this is not a horror movie. It is a musical. It has opera in the title. But it is a rock opera. And it is a sad and twisted tale of tragedy. In the future there is a virus that makes your organs stop working and a company called GeneCo will sell you a replacement organ, and this leads to lots of plastic surgery too. However, if you can’t pay for said organs, they send in the RepoMan to collect them back. And that is your basic story. Oh it is far more complex than that, but to try to explain all the twists and turns, well that just would ruin the fun.

What works for this film is the everything. It has beautiful set design that reflect the two class system the future hosts. Its overall story is involving. It has wonderful, wonderful rock music that can often times be catchy. Like Grave Robber, a bad ass catchy song. And it has a very interesting cast. Giles from the Buffy TV series is the RepoMan and Paris Hilton, yes Paris Hilton, is Amber Sweet. Don’t get turned off, it’s THE perfect role for her – a spoiled drug addicted plastic surgery nightmare whore of a daughter of a rich man. Trust me, it wasn’t much of a stretch for her.

This turns into one of those movies that you tell your friends to watch. I know I have told all of my friends to do just that. I think one of the reasons why I just love this movie so much is that it is different. It is not copying any other movie, it’s original. And it is complex. And it is fun to watch.

I understand that this originated as a stage show in small clubs and has grown in cult status. I am hoping that I will have the chance one day to see it live. I would love to see how they pull it off.  Hell, I’d love to find a place that does the whole midnight screening thing like Rocky Horror. I’d be there in a heart beat dressed up like the grave robber.

 That guy was awesome.
