Girl Gamer Mystique…
Stone here and I am confused. What exactly is it that is this whole girl gamer mystique? There is so much fuss about girl gamers that, and I hate to break this to you, it is perpetrating the worst myths about being a gamer and we have no one to blame for that but ourselves. Face it people, girl gamers are just normal people, like us, who like what they like. So why oogle them like they are rare? There are more of them out there than you think.
See, the evil myth that we are instigating with our obsession with girl gamers is that gaming in a hobby of loser shut ins. Don’t believe me? Who else in this world obsesses over women to the point that we do girl gamers? Immature people and loser shut ins. The rest of the world goes about its daily business cause, well, they’ve been laid. Hate to be so blunt about it, but it’s the truth. So when you hear all this fuss over a girl gamer, what do you think a normal person begins to think about gamers? It probably goes something like this- Well if you get out of the basement and get some sun and move out of your mom’s house, you’d be good. Or something even worse.

How do we as gamers ever expect to be taken seriously when we are making it out that gaming is a male only thing? Yeah, there are other industries and hobbies out there that can have the fingers pointed at them. Most notably the lowrider industry. They always have scantily clad woman around. People, those are mostly skanks who serve as nothing but eye candy, and don’t forget that cars are seen as the age old norm for guy likes. Guys that drive cars have their shit together. Or so the world says. Guys that play games are freaks. Or so the world says. It’s sad, but it’s the truth.
Gaming is coming into its own, but the more we harp about the girl gamer the more it will slow down our acceptance. They are not something to be idolized, they are someone to be welcomed just like anyone else. Gaming is an equal opportunity hobby. Live with it and we will become better gamers in the future for it.

A lot of girls don’t like to game because when they were kids their brothers and guy friends wouldn’t let them play. My lover plays with me at times, but I think it has to do with when they were younger, and boys didn’t want to play with girls.
Now they’re older and apologizing for not letting them play.
I loved it when my stepsister wanted to play games with me. She was cool as all hell, and I never told her she couldn’t play because she’s a female.

In my area I had the same issue that matnatz is saying but in reverse. I dated this one guy during my EQ days that played video games but just wasn’t as into games as I was. I then began to lie saying I was studying or sleeping just so i can get in that little bit extra exp. for the evening. From then on out I refused to date guys of the non-gaming lifestyles. So after many many years I finally found my hubbers who is just as a big a geek as I am. Met him through a video game too which makes it doubly bad ass.

Well, the idea of finding a girlfreind who is into what you like is a great one. I’d like to meet a girl who’s into games as much as I’d like to meet one who’s into art. It seems that many gamers only have one Hobby though and I guess that’s why girlgamers are veiwed as golden eggs.

Growing up (born in ’84) if it wasn’t for my brother I probably would have never seen a video game system. My mom in particular just didn’t dig the idea of me not playing with dolls, going to ballet, and whatever and instead helping my Dad bomb through walls in Zelda. The hardest battle I faced with my family was when I moved out and demanded our old video game systems (Atari 2600/ Intellivision etc). I won of course.
Today most “girl” video games are revolved around ponies, barbie, and um high school musical. It makes it almost understandable why some of the misinformed community can’t grasp a “chick” kickin ass in an FPS, leading a raid in an MMORPG, or just playing and enjoying a game that was directed to the male audience.
Give it time and this thinking will be just as obsolete as the concept of women not being able to vote.

i agree with you Stone. People just piss me off when lets say in a cs:s server a girl joins everybody thinks its a guy just joking or something. why the hell is it so hard to believe that girls play games too?
