Movie Review: Battle Royale
Stone here and I finally got to sit down with Angry Joe and watch Battle Royale. I have been looking forward to seeing this for a while now and it was a perfect day recently that we watched this movie.

What a Mess!
So, what did I think, seeing as how I am so obsessed with the book? It’s hard to say anything bad, but I just do not understand why they changed some of the things that they changed. There is something I am guessing gets lost in the feeling of the book and the feeling of the movie. Of course the book has the liberties to go into more detail than the time limited movie. Come on there are 42 students! I love this movie, but like I said I do not understand some of the changes they made. SPOILERS AHEAD!! Like why did they change last year’s game? Or the ‘host’ of the game? Why did they cut out the whole smoke signal plan? And why did they get rid of the car chase? But at least my favorite part of the book translated just right in the movie – The lighthouse scene. So for all of you out there, If you like the book, you’ll like the movie. If you haven’t read the book and watch the movie, you will be missing something.

WHAT I LIKED
1- The pacing is great. It flows well from beginning to end.
2- Shogo still kicks ass.
3- The grenade in the severed heads mouth. Awesome.
4-The Lighthouse Scene.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
1- The pointless changes from the book.
2- Not enough Kiruama, the crazy fucking gang leader on a rampage.
3- The new ‘host’ of the game.
4- the Requiems at the end. I guess it’s just a Japanese thing I don’t get.
So this movie gets a solid 4 of 5 Fists Of Fury. A must see/buy/steal from that low life friend you have who stole it from someone else. I can not recommend this enough, but read the book with it and you will get more from this movie.
Stone Out.
Joe’s Second Opinion!
That’s it? I guess it was alright….. Maybe it was because Gavin Over-Hyped this movie for me, so my expectations were higher than normal. This movie has been talked about alot, so lets jump right in.

What I Liked
- All of the Kids did a pretty good job of acting considering they are so young. Im glad they didn’t cast 30yr olds are high school kids like they do here in the states.
- A Novel Idea where you are put into a game of survival – its life or death – you get a back with some supplies and one random weapon. I hope it’s a good one.
- Sort of like Lord of the Flies with Guns and Without the Deep Emotions.

What I Didn’t
- Just…..Just…Why? You will be asking yourself that nearly the entire time.
- We get little to no explanations on some important characters, like the crazy older transfer student, Kiruama, who bags almost all the kills himself. Weak. Who is he, why is he a psycho?
- The Pointless Extra Scenes at the end of the Directors Cut.
The movie I found myself yelling at the television WHY?! JUST SHOOT HIM NOW! For this one your going to do a lot of suspension of disbelief. It feels the guy just wanted to make this movie just because it was a fun idea – and it is exactly that – eff all the explanations, were just expected to take it for what it is – if you can do that, and you don’t mind seeing kids shoot each other because they have to, then I guess its worth seeing. For me it was just ehh. There wasn’t enough “charm” like I thought there would be.
2/5

correction…A 2/5 WTF??? Not to mention this is a premier Kinji Fukusaku flick. FOR SHAME!!!!!!!!!

HOW CAN YOU GIVE THIS A 0?????
back in 2002 when nobody in the US had heard of the movie, this was groundbreaking stuff. A movie where schoolkids shot eachother??? The movie was a political message, although a Japanese political message. It would have been run out of US theaters by people with torches and pitchforks. It launched the US film career of Chiaki Kuriyama in Kill Bill Volume 1. It pretty much launched the appeal of Japanese Horror in the US. A O!!!!!!?????? At least give credit where credit is due.

There is a 0 because, back when they did the review that “Our Score” system didn’t exist.

In the book or manga(i don’t remember) Kiriyama was already part of their class, and when he was young he was in a car accident that damaged the part of his brain that causes him to feel emotions, and before the game he flips a coin whether or not to participate so that’s why he kills with no feeling.
