What is OnLive?

Stone here, and I am intrigued by this little thing called OnLive. I know there are a lot of die hards out there killing it before it is released, ahem Angry Joe, but why would it fail?

What it is – An entirely online gaming console.
Why should I care? – I don’t really. Yet. It’s nothing major. It is just the first ever entirely ‘virtual’ console. It’s not backed by a console maker currently, so how will it compete? Who knows. I imagine that a ‘virtual’ console is going to eat up a lot of bandwith. I don’t see that as anything but a problem.
The Good – Well, from what it shows in the promo screens, it does seem to have the support of some major game makers. It could also bring on an era of seriously cheap games. Maybe instead of shelling out $60 for a game it’ll be $40, a price point that many like me would be more willing to shell out for games that don’t warrant full price. Maybe they will have a rental service, you subscribe and rent the game like with Gamefly. The possibilities for this thing are pretty sweet – an on demand gamer machine.
The Not So Good – What happens to bad ass collector’s editions if you download everything? And how quick will it download an epic game like Mass Effect? I don’t think we are to the point of a total virtual console just yet, so will this thing work? And let’s say you are downloading a game and a- your connection is bad OR b- you lose signal during it? Is your game buggy because of it?

I don’t know. So this will be the official OnLive discussion. We need to know more. Do you know more? Are you just as curious as we here at Angry Joe Show are? Discuss! Let’s figure this thing out.

Stone Out.

Valuable gift for anybody who wants one way backlinks for no cost. Anyone need free one way backlinks for their blog? I figured I would distribute some good information I discovered a little while ago. Free one way backlinks for your website. I have been taking advantage of this this for my websites and it really works super! Click my name to get what I mean. Not selling a thing, it’s completely free and it works.

The thing that really scares me about this thing is the replayability. A few weeks ago i found my old nes behind some stuff in my basement. I plugged it in and started playing some old games. With onlive you are dependent on their servers, if they go belly up your games are lost. Also there is bound to be rules, you could risk that a unintended use of a four letter word or racial insensitivity could rob you of the ability to play your games for ever. I like to own my stuff so i can pick the thing up at any time and play. Thats why I dislike mmorpgs and other online only games. Without any single player or lan play, your basically dependent on paying your monthly fee and behaving yourself for as long as you want to play.

Stone.. before you write an article try actually reading just a little bit about what you actually are writing.. If you go to OnLive.com you’ll see with big letters it says GAMES ON DEMAND, which basically means NO DOWNLOADING.. -.-

Despite the downsides, you must admit, this is pretty innovative…

I hope this fails. I really do. Why? I love holding my games, looking through manuels. Digital distribution has it’s place, but it can and will never take the place of boxes and disks. I like things, and the thought of me paying for something I cannot hold is truly alien and almost hostile to me.
I was born with disks and god damnit I’m gonna stick by physical media till the end.

No more manuals/collectables, poorer graphics, higher internet bills and the subscription are turning me away from this project

The thing is, that OnLive will kill all system requierments. The games will be played on THEIR servers somewhere in the US.

Also, you will pay for a sub, not for a game. That means if this is going to work, a shit load of pople will have to pay the sub.

There is a good chance that this thing will kill the console market for good.

It’s really just a “Wait and see” type thing, but overall, I really don’t care about it.
