Bored At Work With Nothing To Do?

BoredSysadmin

STONE HERE, and I love Kongregate. It is a little site with awesome and addicting games that will always cure your case of the boredoms. It is full of games to suit any fancy. My son love to play Set People On Fire. I love to play Sonny and White Board Tower Defense. And there is so much more there that I haven’t even gotten to. You want puzzle games? They got them. RPG? Yep, that too. Adventure? Covered. Odd games you can’t place in a category? Loads of them there. And the best part is that almost all of them are no-committal. You can sit and play for a little while and just have fun. And then they have some like Sonny that can go on for quite a bit. It’s like the perfect mix.

I too was bored at work till I found Kongregate. Now look how happy I am!

So when you need a quick fix, try this site out. Tell me about your favorite games and recommend some to me. I’m not too good at their IP card game fighter, but it is hella fun.

Just don’t get caught at work playing.

2D, How We Miss Ya…

2d image 5

STONE HERE, and I wrote an article about how I couldn’t be a Retro Gamer. You can read it HERE. In the article, I mentioned my friend who is a DS junkie and he thought I misrepresented him. Truth is, he’s a GameBoy junkie. He always has one with him. But more than that, he is a huge fan of 2D games and it got us to talking. Is there room for 2D games in today’s Next-Gen world?

If you read my State Of Gaming article HERE, that the world of gaming is evolving at a rapid state. What was once considered the norm – 2D – just doesn’t seem to have the ability to keep up with the world of immersive 3D worlds that the games offer these days. Or does it? Is there a way to combine the two, keeping the 2D feel with the 3D graphics like in Street Fighter?

2d image 1

This is the old school 2D Street Fighter. Now compare it with the amazing hybrid Street Fighter 4.

2d image 2

Seems to me that it is a perfect way to keep old school 2D games alive and relevant. If other games did this I am sure that 2D could survive. But is it enough of a draw? Do we want to step back and play a simpler game? I don’t know. Me? I would if it was right. Like a hybrid Darkstalkers. But Paper Mario on the Wii is just weird, when you switch from one 2D mode to the weird 3D mode that’s also 2D. It was just kinda weird.

Another thing to think about is what do these games sell for? If Street Fighter didn’t have the Street Fighter franchise behind it, would it have gone over really well? Would it have had all the hoopla? I would like to point out a game that took 2D into the 3D world with great results –

That was an excellent transition that proved that the 3D world made Ghosts N Goblins a much better game. What other games could benefit from this transition. I know PacMan did when it went into that fun 3D PacMan where you could jump over those f-ing ghosts and stuff. Then again, some games might not work as well. I just do not think there is much of a market for 2D anymore. Our tastes have grown, our expectations have risen, and we enjoy what the games offer these days. I personally don’t think a 2D game will hold my interest as long as Mass Effect does. I enjoy the classics, like Bomberman, in short bursts. I enjoy my Live Arcade titles, but even some of those are getting the ‘hybrid’ treatment. (TMNT Re-Shelled In Time) I think that is where the world of 2D is going to stay, in virtual arcades and GameBoy games. The time for big scale 2D games are long gone. They just can’t compete.

Alice In Wonderland

AIW LOGO 22 APR 09 B

STONE HERE, and I have an obsession with Tim Burton in case you couldn’t tell from my 10 Things list. This post was originally set to come up next month, but damn if the trailer for it didn’t get leaked just now. Too excited to wait! I have been really, really following his work since I was a kid, and when he took on Alice in Wonderland, I knew we were going to see something amazing. I love the Alice stories, love the Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor. I love the world of Wonderland in both series, but Looking Glass Wars has that twisted edge I always pictured and that is something Tim Burton will bring to his Alice. Read on…

I Declare Mulligan On The HD War

blu-ray

STONE HERE, and with the whole HD movement I find myself confused at just how BluRay won out on the HD Video war. HDVD and BluRay were the same thing, just HDVD’s were cheaper and embraced by Xbox. Yet now that entire format is gone!

Can anyone explain why BluRay is better? I have compared the two and I see no difference. HDVD were more widely available and cheaper to get. BluRay was a proprietary format of Sony and cost an arm and a leg. Could the PS3 have actually decided this war? Were there actually enough gamers out there with a PS3 that turned the tides of war? It makes no sense cause the majority of the populace, when they go to the store to buy a new player, look at the prices. Hmmm. An HDVD player – $200. A BluRay Player – $400 PS3 or more expensive stand alone. HDVD it is then. And then they go to the movies. ‘Should I have gotten the BluRay?’ BluRay movie – $40. HDVD movie – $25-30. Seals the deal for me. That, my friends, is the general populace’s thinking process.

Riddle me this FOOLS! How did Sony win?

Riddle me this FOOLS! How did Sony win?

I think the truth of the matter is that HD was not integrated enough in society for it to really make a difference. People weren’t buying it one way of the other cause they don’t have HD TV’s in their houses. Now it is common. But then, not so much. I think the results would have been drastically different if the war came next year. HDVD would have won. BluRay player prices are dropping like mad to get people to buy. They were hesitant cause the market told them ‘this is your only choice. Take it or leave it.’ And guess what? People left it. Now the prices have to drop. And they are. Good for them. I like BluRay. Don’t have a BluRay player cause I want to get a PS3, but that’s way too expensive right now. And I don’t want a million machines and cords everywhere.

Now if anyone can tell me why TimeWarner has such crappy HD stations, I’d love to hear from you. It makes me not want HD with their POS selection. And I don’t like Satellite.
