Game Preview: Borderlands (My#1 of 2009)
Joe takes a look at his #1 Most Anticipated Game of 2009, Borderlands. With all of the dream features one could possibly ask for, how this potential hit has flown under the radar is near criminal, Joe aims to shed some light on the game for others. What do you think?

What We Are Excited About:
• A Marriage between two Kick Ass genre’s: RPG’s and FPS’s (with a little more on the FPS side)
• 4 Player Drop in/Drop out Cooperative throughout the entire campaign (with 2 player split screen)
• Procedural Item/Weapons Generator AI (possibly millions of weapon/armor/etc. variations)
• Open-World in an Interesting “Concept Art Cell Shaded” Style
• Areas for player to Engage in PvP as a fun diversion
• Sense of Humor (the game doesn’t take itself too seriously with baddies like “BAD ASS FIRE SKAG”)
What Might Suck:
• Restrictive Character Classes (No Custom Characters)
• Is the game over-promising? Could it possibly live up to the wild claims by its developer?
• The story centers around finding a treasure vault – could this possibly be interesting at all?

Im not sure about borderland,Its look cool but im not in to rpg so I never think to buy or even play the game.
My rate 5/10
boarderlands sounds sick but i gotta say fallout New vegas is at the top of my list because there has been soo much real downloadable content for fallout 3… not just bs alternate costumes like in street-fighters and a crap ass versus mode in resident evil 5. i like the idea of replay-ability but expansion is so much cooler. fallout 3 didnt have alot of replay ability so bethesda expanded it to extend game life and i got i wanna say 80 extra hours out of that game for that reason… a company putting seemingly endless support in their game is what a game truly needs to be successful and so far ive only truly seen that for fallout 3 and i hope fallout new vegas has the same.

Dammit. Now I want this game. An FPS mixed with RPG elements is the best thing ever. My #1 most anticipated game is Brutal Legend.

When this game comes out, I’m gonna check it out. It looks sweet.
Now HERE is a game I can get behind. The idea of FPS meets RPG is a pretty solid enough recipe for making the user cum rainbows, but this game looks to do it better than any before it. Fallout 3? Pfft, BORDERLANDS! This game is a veritable dream list! Scratch the mind-numbingly dull brown & gray pallet that has plagued the current generation for a far slicker (Not to mention more colorful) visual style. It’s as if they picked up some poor bastard out of a shooter & just plopped his ass into an RPG. He didn’t know what he was supposed to do, so he just started shooting shit! Woo! And I don’t even think there is any need for me to go into WOOO THIS GAME HAS CO OP THAT’S AMAZING IT EVEN HAS SPLITSCREEN I LOVE LIFE!
This game is going to kick so much ass.

man so many games comin out this year i dont know witch to buy but im definetly buying this one.
To be honest I haven’t heard much about this game and the title seems kinda boring in like to catch people attention, but anyways after seen this preview I am now excited about this game. What I am worried about is how fast they going to set up the leveling up system and how different is going to be the build up tree for skills. Is it going to be the usual skill trees like in d2 and Wow? or something even more basic that would just lose interest after a week of playing of the game?

Joe, I think it would have been a good idea to bring out the Bulls### translator because software that they say they made is actually just a type of AI. And we all know that Artificial intelligence is something that not even humanity’s top computer and electronic engineers have mastered yet. So, what they’re saying to be is that there will be hundreds of the same type of weapon. Not hundreds of different weapons that don’t feel alike and are distinct. Besides, it would be a better idea just to have over 300 weapons. That way you can have a lot of creative ideas and have more weapons then the Fallout games. And to anyone who has played the original two Fallout games as well as Fallout Tactics and Fallout 3 knows that the Fallout series is infamous for its shear amount of weapon variety. Infact, anyone who has played Fallout 2 can at least remotely agree that they’re probably not going to go on the idea of the Solar Scorcher.
What the Solar Scorcher is, is an energy weapon that is Solar powered. Hence the name: Solar Scorcher. And if you’ve played Fallout 2, then you’de know that it is also a very powerful energy weapon that can have UNLIMITED AMMO! As long as your in the sun, you can keep firing beams of highly focused light that can easily cut a person in two. And since it also has a solar battery, it also makes a decent backup weapon in the dark. Who knows, they might not touch up on the idea of the M72 Gauss Rifle which is also from Fallout 2. And if your wondering what that is, it’s basically a coil gun (sometimes called gauss gun). You don’t know what a coil gun is, look it up because it just stack bricks on this wall of text which should have ended earlier.
So I apologize for this wall of text and with that, I’m going to end this.

Ow! Joe no need to slap, I know about borderlands. When I first saw it during a tv interview, the game seemed cool and then the creator decided to tell us some of the features, then I got really interested (bazillion!). Though, I am wondering a bit if this is gonna be as good as they promise, I mean bazillion sounds almost too awesome to be true. Only one way (and its also the best way) to find out, playing this game when it comes out. Can’t wait.

Hey Joe, big fan of yours and first time commenting on your site. I watched your Borderlands video today like, three times now! Including the non-Joe-hanced trailer on Youtube. Its thanks to you that I found out about Borderlands, and now it is on my MUST HAVE list when it comes out. With Bayonetta being pushed back to 2010, I am definitely picking this game up along with Brutal Legend and Dragon Age: Origin in October. Since it would appear you are getting the 360 version (In case it needs to be mentioned here it will be out for 360, PS3 and PC) are you planning to want to co-op with any of the Angry Gamers? If so, is there a place we can find your Live gamertag?

this game is 1day buy for me!
Been looking forward to this game since the start of the year, but when the announced the cel shading i went off it a bit. After the new gameplay videos from E3 and so on i’m starting to get excited about it but i just wish they kept the original graphics. However alot of friends and people online are saying that they like the new art style so as long as it gets some more hype for the game im happy.
i never really took the game seriously until watching Joes video. after i finished the video, the first question that was on my mind: is the game over promising? and if there will be 500,000 items, will there be a serch menu for the items in the game? i know it sounds stupid but that’s is what was on my mind. also is the game does live up to it’s potencial than will there be a special edition for the game including the art work, a two-disc set, and a special accessorie like in modern warfare 2. i do hope the game lives up to it’s hype.

That being said, this game looks like something incredibly awesome dipped in awesome sauce and forged into a gun that shot out awesomeness. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a gun like that in the game. It’s that awesome.
Still not digging the graphics, though. I don’t know why, they just seem… meh…

The only thing that makes this video irrelevant to my interests was that commercial for Kank-A Sore. At least you don’t have to deal with shitty product placement on YouTube.

Yeah i can understand that not everyone is as interested by Dragon Age: Origins, i must say that i’m quite a fan girl of Bioware who is mading the game, you know the developers of: Baldur’s Gate 1&2, NeverWinter Night, Knight of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Mass Effect
I geek out for bioware the same, but dragon age in terms of graphics and dialogue is unfortunately looking like its taking a step backwards.
Not sure on the graphic thing to me to llok quite fine, on dialogue, well yes they have take the silent PC path, for obvious reasons if you ask me.
First is that they want to do a sucessor to Baldur’s Gate so they try to use some of the old formulla.
2: there is 3 races for the PC it would take lot of talented actor to voice them, cause well a male human who sond exactelly the same as a dwarf would not make it, and let’s not get into the origins, it would be odd that a city elf talk like a Darlish elf who is basically a nomad elf… so would have cost way too much and have take way too much space… so they got for silent PC.
The six origins seem to add lot of replayality i must add
5/5 Joehype…Yep! This looks AMAZING! I agree with the disappointment that you can’t customize your own character. But the fact that they developed an AI that allows for UNLIMITED guns and terrain kind of makes up for that, I can be the scary guy with the scar as a fair trade off. I think this is a game that you may have to preorder to be able to get a copy anytime soon after release.
I’ll admit the game wasn’t on my radar for a while, though after playing some of it via testing, and seeing the new kickass trailer, it was on my number one list. What’s not to love? It’s basically Diablo with guns, and if there’s any other good reeses esque combo, it’s Diablo, and shooters.
Actually, there’s more than just Borderlands that’s coming out in October, such as Brutal Legend. Sadly, MY original number one game, Darksiders, won’t be coming out until next year, so I’m a lil upset about that.

I love upgrading my shit and exploring areas while playing with my close friends. It’s like a comment above being Sacred 2 esque. Sacred 2 was great except for the shitty story and nasty bugs. So as long as Borderlands doesn’t suffer from shitty problems it’ll be pretty bad ass.
The only thing that might stop me from picking this up is if I’m playing one of the newer MMORPGs.
All I know is that I wanna be the juiced up guy, hopefully all the dudes will wanna stare at the chick’s ass so I can have a try at him.

Agreed. I think I’d prefer to play as the chick class because in most RPGs I like the mage, which from what I understand, is her role. The tank is my least favorite role.
It looks really cool, combining my favorite game genres, RPG and FPS. I was more hyped up for Modern Warfare 2 but now Borderlands is on top of my list. Great preview Joe.

I’m not too sure about this game , the graphics already are a drawback for me but in rest it sounds alright .

It looks to me like a cooperative Fallout, but with Bioshock visuals and the addictiveness of RPG loot. I just hope the feel is right. I’ll explain. When playing Fallout 3 or Left4Dead, I always felt awkward. It didn’t have the smoothness of CoD or Halo to me. The only time in Fallout when I didn’t use vats was when I was sniping, because I didn’t trust VATS to hit at that distance. I don’t know if anyone else feels this way as well. Otherwise, if I could only get one game this year, it would be this (thankfully I can choose more than one, that would suck). I’ve watched that trailer 10 times today.
And Joe, thank you. I hadn’t seen any of this game until two days ago, because most sites overlook games that don’t end with giant numbers like Mario Kart eleventy billion the next generation (source: Yahtzee) but seeing this pop up only two days later reminds me why I come here, because you are a truly legitimate gamer, not some corporate asshat. Seeing things like Left4Dead2 discussed point by point and Chromehounds recognized for being a fantastically overlooked game is the reason I come to this site, so again thank you.
P.S. as much as I love your vids, I thought you got in the way of this trailer. Not that you aren’t bad ass, you are, but not that bad ass. Only Bruce Campbell and Mr. T could have appeared in the video and not get in the way.

Yeah, it’s too bad that you can’t create a character, only personalize it.
But who knows? If this sells well, they might add it in Borderlands 2/Expansion.
