“Predators” Film News & Plot Details
Its been confirmed! We have a Nimrod of a director for the New Predators film! Plus we’ve also found a few details on the possible Plot!
By Nimrod of course I mean the man named Nimrod Antal, who’s film credits include the horror/thriller Vacancy with Luke Wilson, and an upcoming crime thriller Armored.
I’ve got to say judging from those, i’m not really sure why Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Spy Kids and Sin City) who is overseeing the film and co-writing, felt Nimrod was the best man for the job.
Fortunately Robert shared a few details with Aint it Cool News that should put some fears to rest on the direction they hope to take with the stand alone follow-up to the Predators license:
I can’t go too much into the story right now, because we’re still writing. But it still involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group). So like the original movie, the title does have a double meaning. Aliens was a different take on the Alien idea, and an original movie in it’s own right, and that’s what we want to do with this.
Holy Shit! Did I read that right? “Group of People Stranded on the Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors”? Now we’ve seen the Predators home planet very briefly in the AVP2 film – but a whole movie on the alien surface definitely seems like the right direction.
If they take Joe’s advice they would not only have the group of people fighting the predators themselves, but also the crazy alien wildlife and dangerous man-eating plants that I envision that kind of planet having. Think about it, the planet itself is probably what shaped the predator race into such superb hunters. If they Ignore that opportunity I’ll be seriously pissed off.
Rodriguez didn’t stop there, he went on to explain how the project got started and how serious he is about getting it right:
When I was hired to write the original draft back in 1994, i was only brought on as a writer. I never thought I’d get to work on it in any other capacity. So a few months ago, when Alex Young at Fox contacted me about re-inventing the franchise using my original draft as a template for getting as far away as possible from the AVP movies, I jumped on it… Alex came down and saw Troublemaker Studios, and the facilities and crew that I’ve built up over the past 12 years, and he felt right away that this is where the movie should be made and that doing it down here would be the best way to protect it from the studio system. He was keen on making a very “non-studio” picture… As to how this movie will be viewed, one of the guys at Fox told me “No one is ever going to talk about AVP again after this film, I will stake my life on it.” And he’s a really nice guy, so I don’t want to see him dead. Now that lives are at stake, it’s no longer a job it’s a mission. Failure is not an option.
Wow, now thats serious business, “Failure is not an option” and erasing the lack-luster AVP films from our minds? He might be setting himself up for disaster but damnit – I like a man with this much passion at the helm of one of my favorite franchises. Of course though, we heard this same kind of lip service from the people behind the AVP films – both times. I guess we will have to wait and see.
What do you guys think?
Am I right? If they do end up on the Predator Homeworld what should happen? Seems like a pretty hopeless situation as there potentially billions of predators living there. How do you think the ended up there? And should they introduce new alien lifeforms that might live there as well?
