United States of AWESOME!

STONE HERE, and I am almost at the end of my TV mini series posts. If you want to see what a real actress is capable of, then look no further than Toni Collette. Yes, Muriel from ‘Muriel’s Wedding’. That Toni Collette. She is in a new series on Showtime called ‘The United States of Tara’.

She plays Tara, a mom and wife who suffers from multiple personality disorder and is literally 4 different characters in the series, not including Gimmie, which would make it 5. And no two characters are alike, and Toni plays each one with such vigor that it is absolutely amazing to watch. She literally has to pull of all of these characters and remember how to do it. There is T, the rebellious teenage slut, Buck, the red neck guy, and the eager Leave it to Beaver mom Alice. And then there is the rarely seen Gimmie, a wild animal that pee’s in peoples beds. You can tell each one differently and when they are coming by the simple nod of her head when she ‘transforms’ into one of them. It is a brilliantly difficult role that has really caught my attention. I do not imagine it is easy to stay in character for ONE role a season, let alone 5.

Season one ended recently. I can not recommend this show enough. It’s from Diablo Cody, that bad ass chick who won for Juno at the Oscars. So if you liked Juno, then this show is for you. And just to watch the brilliance of Toni Collette is worth it alone. I can not think of any other actress who would have done that role any justice. Rock on Toni and here’s to hoping your brilliance is realized in the coming year.

And Gimmie fucking rocks.

Meet T, almost as hardcore as Alice, but not quite as evil.
