What the F*ck!: GameFly

Alright that’s it! I’ve had enough of this crap. If I’ve been having these kinds of problems with the Games-by Mail Service GameFly than I’m sure there are others experiencing similar things. Video after the Jump!
What The F*CK: GameFly
It all started long ago, I had a good experience with them years ago, even getting to level 3 I believe, on a 2-Game Plan, however after sometime I canceled my account. It was only sometime late last year that I reactivated it, since that day I’ve had nothing but problems with them.
First, It was a few days delay before I’d get my next game – not a problem – I’m a reasonable man. I’m willing to wait 3, 4, 5, hell even 7 days for some of the games I put in my Queue. But when it gets to 16 days before I see my next game it makes it hard to continue my show. That’s nearly half of my paid subscription that I’ve been without a game through no fault of my own. I’m only getting 50% of what Im paying for (having one game at home, and waiting for that last game).
Things started to take a turn for the worse when sometime after GameFly decided to Re-Organize their website. By “Re-Organize” I mean make it more difficult for people to see at a glance how many of their games are available and In-Stock. Shady. I was at the breaking point when my emails were met with form letters that didn’t answer my questions at all. Games that were out for months were still on Low Availability with no end in sight. WHY the hell were weren’t they buying more stock for those, and did they think they could honestly pinch their pennies without anyone being effected?
Finally, more recently I’ve still been having issues with getting games within a reasonable amount of time, so I asked my Twitter Legion what they thought – they helped remind me why I do what I do. If no one is going to speak up for the people getting dicked-over by GameFly and their new tactics than Joe will – I’m not in this to make friends in the industry, I’m in this for the gamers. And Gamers should know what GameFly has been up to lately and if they have any other options in the future if they dont like their current service.
This is a possible new series, called “What the F*ck” where I ask the tough questions to some ole’ bullsh*t that has been pulled lately within the industry.
Make sure you let me know in the comments section if you’ve had any similar Negative (and or Positive) experiences with their service.
And if you have any suggestions for future WTF’s, I’m all ears.

…hmm…interesting, I also have a website but I talk about buying Used Racking. But I like this site and I’m going to check back soon for updates.
Thanks for taking the time to post this.
I checked out the gamefly website and I couldn’t agree more: They stuffed it up completely. Used to be so much easier to find what you are looking for, and now everthing’s all over the place.
Looks like a bit of a trap to be honest. Glad I read this article first.
Just Been looking into gamefly and found this post thank god for a honest review will be sticking to ebay and gamestation online which has some great deals on for old games.

hi from istanbul Turkey this post is very good thanks for sharing i was looking for Barış Yardımoğlu from google and found myself here, i will be here again. By the way Baris Yardimoglu is one your followers too
I had gamefly for the trial and my experience was similar to that of Joe’s. Only got 1 or 2 of the titles that were at the top of my list and shipping times were slow (not as slow as Joe’s, but still about a week’s turnaround. So I decided to try out game mine. This was the worst decision I could have made. Not only did it take over a week in-between shipments, I received MLB 2k10 damaged. So I told them about it, and I eventually got a new copy (after waiting for them to receive the damaged one, and send out a new on). This one was damaged as well, and almost seemed to be the exact same copy. I complained and got my trial extended by 2 weeks. Now, this was the worst thing that could have happened.
I eventually got a few other games and the last game I received (before THEY cancelled my account) Red Dead Revolver was scratched and this was a brand new game supposedly. So I let them know this via their site and I mailed it back to them the next day. This past Monday (6/7) I got an email from “scott” in customer service accusing me that I scratched the game and that I tried to buff it out!! I wouldn’t even know how to attempt the buff out a scratch. I take care of all things I borrow, as if they were my own, so this accusation really made me mad. And to top things off they charged my credit card $50. When I called Scott about this, he didn’t care to listen to anything I said and just decided the issue was over, it was my fault, end of conversation. Aren’t customer service people supposed to be helpful to their customers?!? Especially when the customer didn’t do anything wrong. I will be disputed the charge with my credit card and will be fighting to get my rightfully earned money back, and will post with (hopefully good) results.
So that’s my story. If you know what’s good for you stay away from Gamemine. With Gamefly.com and game mine you will probably receive the same types of games, unless you get lucky (or unlucky in my case) and get a few new releases, but with Gamemine.com they accuse you of damaging games and will charge you for them.
Stay far, far awawy from Gamemine!!!
Visit my site. http://www.GameMineSucks.info and tell me your story and help me get the word out even more!
gonna say this for the hell of it in your state is there no such thing as play.com 2-3 days for it t’ get to u and no member ship fee and there well stocked iv bearly ever seen a out of stock game
Cancel I waited a month for 1 FUCKING GAME WTF 1 Month do you want to know the funny thing it was on HIGH Availability so I gave up and cancelled I suggest metaboli but that’s pc games
I was searching for repairing my xbox when I found your site. Great post. Thank You.
I had someone who USED to be a friend (Turned on me, enemy, long story) say that she used gamefly. But that any of the games she picked out, she’d have to wait about four or five days AFTER release to even get them, hell, even for a week and a half.
I think about that and get an cruel laugh out of that every time I go to blockbuster and get something almost immediately. Although NOW blockbuster is having less and less supply. Also, if you miss getting the game on the day it comes out, good luck trying to get a rental. You will have the hardest time EVER in getting it….
I remember I would rent old games from Gamefly just because I just got a XBox 360 and had a backlog of games I wanted to try. So I got the service, found it was too expensive per month with my other money obligations so I canceled it… or so I thought. They kept my account open, kept sending me games. I tried canceling it again, and then removing everything from my que and sending the games back… that didn’t work. I called them, they said I wasn’t subscribed anymore yet they kept charging me. It took me having to cancel my bank card and getting a new one to stopped being charged.
You should definately check out this review of Gamemine. They just released (08/24/09) a limited free trial offer which beats the hell out of the Gamefly Free Trial.
Gamemine was just bought out by a big company and they upped their inventory, added a 2x speed option (faster delivery) and now have a 15 day free trial. I get word from a lot of people on my site that they are switching so I thought I would share the info based on your experience.
Here is a quick comparison of the 2 services:
1) 15 day free trial w/ GameMine vs 10 day free trial with Gamefly
2) Gamemine’s 2X Speed Club allows you to have the next game in your Minelist queue to be sent to you before they receive the game currently being rented. Gamefly’s average delivery time is 2-4 days.
3) Gamemine offers cheaper monthly plans in addition to prepaid plans
a. Game Mine 2 Game Monthly Plan – $20.95
b. Gamefly 2 Game Montly Plan – $22.95
4) Gamemine has ongoing and upcoming promotions such as the Gamer Trinity Promotion give away
i say you leave them its not to the shows benifit but if your paying monthley for maybe one or 2 games its to your benifit to find another way or look for a way you can get what you pay for
Love the site Joe! I have a friend who tried Gamefly and he did not care for it. He said it took almost a month to get a new game in the mail! Screw that, stick with what works. Walk into a store and buy it, very simple.
Hey Joe,
First off love your shows. Second I dont subscribe to gamefly but I do have experience with them because my friend used their services for a while and he had the exact same problems. Im going to tell you the same thing I told him, When in doubt Blow it up!!!
lol! i had an image of joe landing outside the gamefly HQ (starship trooper dropship style) charging in with the angry army screaming KILL ‘EM ALLLLL!!!! subtle?… no, awseome? HELL YEAH!
but seriously, is that kind of incompetence legal?
Never bothered with online renting ,and so far so good with my success of finding what I want to rent. Video games wise anyways, Angry Joe I suggest you just get some inside help at the rental stores and electronic shops from now on. Get em to hide a copy of whatever your reviewing next.
May I suggest you bash the hell out of GH 5 , with the cereal box’d GH van halen? (their offering GH van halen which was a stand alone game with GH5 if you pre-order it). That shit seems as rushed as any sports game in the business now.
i cancelled my account with them a few years ago bc of similiar reasons. At that time I had both gamefly and netflix accounts….and it would take netflix about four days for me to send and receive a new movie. Gamefly was quite the opposite; I always avoided new releases, but even for games that were already a year or so old would take about two weeks to get to my doorstep.
When i complained to them about it they gave me an excuse that was along the lines of ‘post office shipping problems blah blah blah.’ Since Netflix didnt seem to have the same problem despite the same method of business, I felt like I was getting jacked a little and cancelled the account
Reason’s like this are why I buy from eBay.
I’m fine with the fact that you can order games online and how Blockbuster is coming to the internet, but i just have one thing to say: What’s the point of having to wait 1 WEEKS for your game to be delivered when you can go to the store and and find out when the game will be shiped which will take about A DAY OR 2?! I understand if you guys are trying to rent an old used game. But, if your renting a game that’s about 2 month’s old, i must ask: WHAT’S THE POINT?!
i am tempted to try blockbuster, thanks for telling me to steer clear of gamefly
gamefly’s been good to me. maybe the game was lost or stolen in the mail.
what was up with the blockbuster plug at the end?
Uh, magnet, I don’t think you were listening to well there. He was saying that the current model where you see the availability of a game as either medium or low were bogus because the percentages given by gamefly of 50-74% availability are wrong. Joe even gives an example of having to wait more than 2 weeks for games to arrive in the mail. Joe even proposed showing hard numbers instead of made up percentages to alleviate such gross inadequacy to accurately portray items in stock versus demand and the availability to the consumer. Nothing contradictory to his statement at all.
Love the rant Joe. The removal of the availability tags is really just a marketing ploy to boost sales for the unsuspecting. The only thing wrong I can point out was that you spelled sarcasm wrong but that’s just being a little nitpicky.
Actually in the time it took to watch that I dropped a game in the mail and got a new one back from gamefly. Yo! I love the rant but don’t see why joe’s capping on gamefly. Couple hundred $$ a year and i play 30+ games easy. have a hard time complaining about that. He’s right that sometimes demand outstrips supply for some games, but other than that, the service is solid. I listened seriously on this one for awhile but then he went from complaining about g’fly hiding the availability metrics to saying the availability metrics were bogus and I was like, WTF?
Joe, You should quit gamefly the reason they do this shit is because they have no competition in this market, they can do what they want. wait till blockbuster does it, then see how fast they stock up on their games.
I’m for my self just quite happy that i never rant a game online… I just go to my local Superclub Videotron, wich is only 20min away walking and rant the game i want to try i rant it there… 5 bucks and i have the game for 3 day for a new game, or 7days if it’s an older one…
oh and i just read ur tweet bout TES. Would u prefer Bethesda make a Fallout 4 first or another Elder scrolls?
and amen to what Emil said. Id rather keep about 20 xbox 360 games that i dont play rather than to get anally shafted with their trade in values and i love how they turn around and sell the game for $30 more than you traded it for.
I buy and sell my games on ebay its cheaper then any store.
If you have any questions email me @ bladestormemil@yahoo.com
i was just thinking of subscribing to gamefly lol thx for saving my nuts from the grindstone joe.
Do a Wtf about Gamestop trade in value.
I don´t know there, but in Spain, “Game” shops offer you to rent all the second-hand games they sell plus four or five copies of the new releases. It cost 2.5€ (3.5$) the first day and 1.5€ (2.1$) each extra day(they also offer you a flat rate). I usually rent a game, play it for 24h, and give it back . I only buy games that realy worth it (it seems 1$=1€, so a 60$ game, here is a 60€ game (84$)).
I’ve been with these guys for a couple of years. The site change is most
definitely NOT WELCOME. Everything about the fucking thing is a marketing ploy.
Having said that, I still like this company. I like what they do, I like the
concept. It’s in the execution that Gamefly falls flat on it’s face. It sucks
that people are being charged for stupid shit. It’s never happened to me, but
that doesn’t mean it never happens. They need to man up to their own mistakes,
or simply accept that the US Postal service isn’t perfect & accept the decidedly
small losses. And FOR FUCK’S SAKE, they need to purchase more stock. Perhaps
they’ve grown too fast too quickly, where they’re trapped in the spot of
“Can’t meet the demand, can’t afford to raise the supply”. Perhaps if
they let us view the actual statistics, we could decide for ourselves.
I was thinking of doing Gamefly to save my self a few bucks, but it looks like I’ll be avoiding it.
Seems stypid those low medium and high things. That is why I dont usually rent games I rather buy them from stores or just borrow from friends. Well its no excuse but they might not be buying new rental games because they cost so much more than normal games. I’m sure you are aware of this fact.
