My friend lent it to me and i didn’t think much of it at first until i started playing on it and gave it back to him next week because i had been playing nothing but it and had just finished my 8th character
Then i brought the ultimate edition and completed 7 more characters through all DLC’s
I agree. DAO is a must have for all lovers of RPG’s
Already played it about 32 times over and over. O_o (I’m more the mage type)
Good they made a lot of improvements (and Mods for the game) ^_^
Replace “Fade quest too long” with “inability to get a tank other than yourself (boring) or Alistair, who bitches about everything, without DLC”.
Alistair is fucking awesome, you sound like a bitcher bitching about Alistair.
Joe we need Devil Joe doing a full review or why not a double review you and Devil Joe its just cool
Not exactly sure why the PC version being superior to the console one is something people would hate? It’s an accepted fact that most games that port over the PC are generally the definitive versions, but that’s all they are, ports.
Also the idea behind having a main character not voiced over is to enhance the RPG elements, how could I role play a character that I designed, that I want to reflect me in a game if he/she is talking in a way, responding in a way I would never do (Very much like in DA2). It takes away from the immersion.
The music that starts playing at 3:25 – I have that soundtrack on my iPod!!! It’s one of my favorites!
where are your walktroughs ?
really this has to be the best rpg on the pc in the last 10 years.
fantasy related anyways. i was all excited that this was sort of a shell of a game to be expanded on for DA2 since they ditched the D&D license (great move too) but damn was i wrong!
I would rate DAO 10/10. Of its genre, this is definitely one of the best. What I like is the profound story-line coupled with the deep character developments of your companions. It is the complete experience.
Of the recent trend of decreasing the rpg elements in games, I wonder if we will ever get another game like Dragon Age Origins. I love this genre and to me, if the story is good, gameplay does not really matter, it is like reading a good fantasy novel and being able to influence events within it. The other RPGs that I can compare with DAO are, Neverwinter Nights 1(&2) , KOTOR1, Witcher 1(currently playing TW2), Jade Empire, but that is about it. Rare gem wow.
I heard many positive things about ME series, but not really sure about the fantasy type at the moment, guns, lasers are meh (KOTOR has lightsabers and the Force).
Dragon Age : Origins… is my FAVORITE GAME of all time.
When i first heard that the game won the “pc game of the year 2009″ ( at that time i voted for Batman Arkham Asylum ) I was pissed, and then i decided to see for myself why the game is so highly praised, well i got my answer. After i beaten the game for the first time I had to play it again and again. Eventually I also bought it twice O_O ( one physical copy the second is from Origin ). This is the only game which i had to buy twice !!! ( the game from Origin has all the dlc content while the physical has none ). Anyway over 300+ hours i spent on this game and even now i still play the damn game. Sadly DA2 was a disappointment
DAO is the real shit
I wouldn’t really call the “sex scenes” in Dragons Age: Origins sex scenes. They looked more like an awkward game of Twister gone wrong. Naked.
Despite the sometimes major flaws I loved DA2 (not what I was expecting, so riddled with flaws it should have been bad, but it succeeded in a lot of ways too, really well – nothing wrong with the VA on the whole either I think), and depsite the different but still frequent flaws DA Origins is simply fantastic. Have to agree with Joe about the difficulty – it could be really frustrating dying in some random encounter, but you actually have to pay attention and think for every battle or it could trip you up.
Sure, this game was simple (simpler than DA2′s set up), almost stock, but it delivered it so well (and despite major flaws, DA2 was a great set up to an epic ongoing storyline – shame it was clearly very rushed, which dragged it down)
I spent 150+ h and i still play it. it is awesome. Just brodmother spent 3h trying to kill that BITCH!!! BUY IT not Dragon age 2.
P.S Dragon age 2 sucks!
you couldn’t beat her… u suck then
Dragon Age 2 isn’t that bad. It’s good for when I’m bored of other games and need something to keep me busy for a day or maybe two. It’s when I remember that it’s supposed to be a sequel to Dragon Age: Origins that I begin to feel sick and leave the game for another month.
In my opinion da2 is better than dao…….in fact i first played da2 to be honest and the combat was very good as like the choices and voice overs….
then i started to play dao and i was so pissed off of the very stiff and static combat and no voice…….the only thing that i believe everyone likes dao is only for the length…… if you want length play kingdoms of amalur no dao
hmmmm, i wonder if Joe likes this game ????
i think i have about 250 hours of play on this game according to Steam. no shit
The companions are top notch. the rock guy was hilarious, Alastair was just awesome. Building a pimp team was fun. Cant say enuf good things about it.
Still pissed they took the format, which seemed like they were just laying the groundwork for a new system free from the D&D rule set, and just said Fuck all that!, for Dragon Age 2
*SPOILER ALERT* minor but still
Do your research Shale is a girl, honestly.
Joe called for a voiced players character – now look what they did with DA2. There’s always a price for everything, in this occasion it completely ruined the sequel.
Thank you da2 took away everything i loved about the original mainley the origins i would have loved to have been a qunari or moaybe a antivan crow that would have been badass
Yeah, i want the old Dragon Age: Origins back, Baldur’s Gate style! Not that stupid EA crappy, DA2…
I played through it because i just had to see if it was as bad as it felt from the start, and oh yes… It was even worse, what killed my interest in the start was the dull characters, and music. Then the story, fighting, and enemy spawns amongst others.
Mindless hack and slash is what DA2 is, i tried playing through a 2nd time but just no, never again lol.
Also, when my brother died in the start of the game, i laughed. I was like, should i have cared for that character? And the rest is forgetable, the only exception is the dwarf, but not enough to redeem the horrible writing, story, music etc. Still, i know far worse games, but i would have given it a 5/10.
Well. To me, DA2 is gaiden game, a “side story” if you will. I always think of DA2 is a “not so important part of the game”. In DAO you stopped to blight thus destroyed the archdemon. In dragon age 2.. humm.. I don’t see how DA2 plot being important. To me DA main focus is on the Dark Spawn and in DA2 I barely fought any of them.
shit., sorry for the spoiler.
It’s the theme from requiem to a dream.
What the hell is the name of the kickass 8 bit beat that starts around the 2 minute mark? I know I’ve heard it before somewhere, but I can’t remember where. :<
I am already on my 10th play through drawf mage is going to be legen… wait for it dary
i like the city elf the best
Aw, why didn’t you mention the Zevran romance? Or Alistair? Ladies enjoy the game too. ;3
Does anyone know where to get that kickass epic battlesong from this review 3:23 in and 4:23 out?
Weird coincidence that I visited this page for the first time ever today! That was my montage and the song used was Lux Aeterna by Clint Mansell. Extremely epic song!
i bought this game cuz joe said so,
There is a penalty for dying in Fable 2 mate, you loose all un gathered experience.
Fortunately, Dragon Age 2 -will- have main character voice acting, along with many other improvements over this one.
Hey Joe!
I definitely agree with your review, though I started to wonder, what would be your top 5 rpgs? It’s quite hard of a decision, but I’d much appreciate it if you gave your opinion on this question =)
Cheers
Being a huge fan of this game, I will have to agree. While Joe was correct that the PC version is Vastly superior to the console versions ( MODS FTW) I would have to say that sometimes having a controller would be nice as well. This game has not only spawned quite the following ( I have heard rumors of a fan made DAO movie using the tool set that the PC version has) It has its own table top version that is rather decent for those that play them ( I happen to be one of them). So To you Joe, I give your review a thumbs up as it was correct on all angles of the game. PC version has better graphics then the console BTW.
this game is bad ass and even if your not a fan of rpgs (I dont know why you would not be) you should give this game a try.
Graphics do not make the game nor does the main characters voice acting. They have many “voice sets” for the character but there was to much dialogue to get them all voiced. Everything else I agree.
