Why Spike’s Video Game Awards Suck Balls!

VGAs_SITE_02

Did anyone catch the 2009 VGA’s? Well I did and I couldnt help but get pissed the hell off at all the wasted potential. IF This is our only choice for a Major Video Game Awards show then why is everything focused on making it look like something else (movies, or music video awards). These are my very Angry thought’s on the 2009 VGA’s!

The VGAs have the same problem the scream awards have. They alienate the people who they try to appease. You can even say the same of G4 network.
But that we even think they try to appease us is even somewhat questionable.
As a Comicbook fan, I find the Scream award’s comic section laughable. The last two years have been simply just Vertigo Titles and shallow books like Fathom and Witchblade paying no mind to anything superhero, particularly Green Lantern, which has been for the past three years one of the best Comic Books out there. But Come this years award they suddenly have Green Lantern in the running for most categories. Now, admitedly, with Blackest Night, it’s notoriety has been risen, but I doubt Spike gave two shits about it now, like they did then and simply followed the money.
And its the same thing in the VGAs. Nintendo doesn’t win because they don’t pay the bills. Hell, that’s the only reason Megan Fox was in the running, because honestly, Megan Fox and Best Performance is like saying Rosie O’Donnell and Award winning Series.

You know, If they’re gonna blow that much money on celebrities, why not get actual reviewers to vote and people in the industry to host? At least Jack Black had Brutal legend.

In case you didn’t notice, the entire point of Spike TV is to market jocks and hockey to gamers and geeks. That’s why I’ve never watched it since they killed TechTV.

The Best They Can Do Is To Put You Angry Joe On The Show, And Show All Game Platforms And Genre In The Show, And If We Shall Have Celebrity, We Shall Finde Celebrity That Really Play Game, Like Jack Black(He Make A Great Proformans In Brütal Legend, Better Than Megan Fox)
There Can Also Be Some Normal Gamers On The Show That Tells Something About Gameing, If I Was On The Show, I Will Do My Best.
Lets Hope That Is Better Next Year, And You Are On It Joe^^

Well…meant to comment for a while.

I agree with you Joe and you ask why it has to be like this.

Thing is…you have to remember who owns Spike…and thats MTV.
MTV music awards work like this too…a popularity contest and most of the time people win that do not deserve it (Beyonce’s vid wasn’t all that special and the music really sucked yet she won the biggest award).
But some of the winners where a little fishy…but heck it’s a corporate sponsored fest…the music bizz practicly tells people what to listen to it would not suprise me if it worked like this with the VGA’s aswell.

If you want some fair awards your prob gonna need a whole different setting and people that actually know something about games.
Take some professional reviewers, pro gamers, normal gamers…maybe even some devs to set up a panel that decide some of the winners.
And besides that you can still have some public choice categories where people can vote.

I think the biggest problem with the VGA’s is that the wrong people are involved.
Megan Fox beeing nominated (AND WINNING for crying out loud “she looks HOT she’s got my vote.”) says enough…..she did nothing special…my ass can do better voice acting.
Waaay more talented people out there (including like I said my ass).

Hmmm these awards are total bullshit it seems and just one big marketing campaign aimed to sell Mountain Dew to 12 year old Halo-kiddies :D The fact that the word “Mountain Dew” comes up in an award category is hilarious. Why not “Best Celebrity Endorsed Pile of Shit?” Megan Fox should have won THAT ward instead.

No pc-gaming category as it is not mainstream and “hardcore” enough presumably. Same with RTS, people with ADD who are fucked up on Dew can’t concentrate enough to play that shit, even if it is Halo Wars :P

No Japanese titles as they are not endorsed enough by the publishers to “warrant” a spot in the list. Japanese developers are too humble for that, although one could argue that with huge marketing campaigns like the Wii.

All in all this is mostly down to money which is understandable; the videogame industry is big money and it beneftis from charades like this, in some ways at least. Real industry critics and avid gamers will not pay attention to shows like this anyway, there are more worthy award shows out there.

To be fair there are worse choices than Uncharted 2 for game of the year and L4D2 as best 360 game. I was actually surprised they didn’t just go ahead and make Modern Warfare 2 win everything :P

In all fairness, L4D2 is one of the few exclusive titles (between consoles anyways) that was released on the 360 this year. ODST is an expansion, therefore it doesn’t even belong in the Best Shooters nomination category nor can it really take best 360 game. Best Wii game as Mario Bros. Wii is kind of a joke too seeing as how it’s basically a re-re-release of mario 3. I would have given that to MadWorld. Otherwise this year for the Wii was pretty much dominated by Gamecube re-releases with Wii control schemes (oh joy…), House of the Dead: Overkill, The Conduit, Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, Dead Space: Extraction and New Super Mario Bros Wii. Lego Rock Band got a nomination but Guitar Hero: Metallica did not? South Park won best tv/movie based game but not Arkham Asylum or Ghostbusters? Hugh Jackman won best male voice in a video game but Mark Hamil didn’t at least get that? Dragon Age Origins as best console RPG? It’s a good game but it is best experienced on the PC. Demon’s Souls probably would have gotten my nod for RPG of the Year. I loved Borderlands but Demon’s Souls was challenging. This show did nothing but piss me off and the only thing I could think of when it was over was Jack Black. lol that would be my reaction being there too. It’s almost a joke seeing all the titles that won awards that went up against elements from Arkham Asylum (you know, nearly every category) yet still not acknowledging Arkham Asylum in other sub-categories but rather games that weren’t even nominated in the main category.

This is why I hate the VGAs. How DID that whole thing happen with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves anyway? THINGS DON’T WORK THAT WAY! I think I know how this crap works. I think they pick what games that want to get rewards. Also, the whole football jock thing was stupid as well. I think they should of had the Angry Video Game Nerd, Angry Joe and all of the other guys running the show. Now THAT would be awesome.

here’s an idea. as you know, all systems are connected to the main companies in some way. (ex. X-BOX LIVE, WII ONLINE, PS3 Online, ex.) so what the companies do is hold some contest. pick the best gamers of their catagory to represent the company. then when the catagory for, lets say, best action 360 game of the year comes out. have the best of the best pick it.

hello this is my first time posting here but i wanted to say WHAT THE HELL is this i will say i truly did not get to watch this but i read and heard a good number of things they picked though i will say i think Megan fox is hot i don’t think she should have won that award there are way better actors that could have. also how they could do this better is get some seasoned gamers, critics for what ever category they like to vote on what they like say there like’s and dislikes for the game and or actor, the best sound effects or music and all that good stuff and then have it so us little people’s that apparently to these people mean nothing even though we are how they make money get to vote on it and they show both Scores and the like and they pick the Fans best game and then what the critics, seasoned gamers choice as the Two best choices one that the critics, gamers think are best and one that we think is up well thats my idea any ways

Do you guys have any other big award shows for games over there in the US or is this one meant to be the big one, like the grammys is to music?

Over here in the UK we’ve got the Bafta game awards which I can say without a shadow of a doubt was way better than this crap. Lemme know what you guys think of the results they gave early in the year:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jHiuwTd84o

It’s very irregular to see celebrities (that you actually know) talking about games they play, and knowing what they’re talking about:

    NAILED IT ON THE HEAD!!

But what do you expect from a video game awards show run by MTV/Spike? I mean, c’mon, a while ago Twilight won 5 awards at he MTV Movie awards including ‘Best Movie’ and ‘Best Fight’ (*COUGH* DARK KNIGHT?? *COUGH*).

With that level of pre-pubescent fanboyism, it only follows suit to have Megan Fox be considered the best voice actress in a video game. “OMG her is sexys! She hav talent!” Sweet love of fuck, you’d think with that mindset they’d be voting for best actress in a porno: “Jessica’s Body 2: This Time You Actually See Jessica’s Body”. That is made even more ridiculous when you read the almost unanimously horrible reviews about the TF2 video game’s wooden voice acting.

And the guests at the VGA look as thrilled to be there as the SAW characters do in the death traps… Well, maybe a little more because they do get paid to go through this torture. HOWEVER, the exception is (and will always be) Jack Black because he not only has an addictive, ‘this-will-be-awesome’ personality, but because, as you mentioned, HE IS ACTUALLY INVOLVED IN THE INDUSTRY!

But again, with an over-hyped, demographically-challenged video game review show by MTV (aka “The everything BUT music videos channel”) this is to be expected. And will it get any better? Judging by MTV’s own identity crisis and their catering to sponsors and the Twilight demographic, then probably not.

But enough bitching, it’s time to take action! I say that with the rising popularity of Angry Joe, Spoony, et al, it’s time to MAKE a new awards show.
Yeah, harder than it sounds, I know, but worth a shot, right?

Angry Joe: If I said I wanted to see you on the VGA I might as well say I want to see you jump in a cesspool. You don’t need the stink of MTV on you, man. You got the talent, you got the connections, I say it’s time for a REAL Video Game Awards show, Angry Joe-style!

Yeah, but those have their flaws too. Those awards programmes are often bought out as well. Maybe a combination of a professional awards show, mixed with a “people’s choice” selection. Joe hit on the right thing though, people are going to buy some of these games thinking “look at the awards it won!” and be sadly disappointed. The awards should be more selective and based on gaming genres. As he has pointed out recently, there are some amazing games by small companies , like the folks who made King Arthur, who this award show completely ignored. And what happened to Nintendo? Everyone I know has a Wii. Ignore the VGA’s and listen to Joe!

I didn’t even watch this years VGAs, I was still pissed by last years VGAs. I agree Joe should be the host of the show, if not, at least assemble a group of judges to pick the winners and put him on the head of it instead of the “As voted by you!” bullshit. I’ve always hated that stupid horseshit that’s been going on lately with these kind of award shows. They try and sucker you in with “YOU decide the winners!”. No, I don’t decide the winners, the majority does, and I’m not always among the majority. They need to get people who know what they’re talkin’ about (Joe) to decide these things. I’ll betcha the nomination and voting process goes something like this, ” Ok, let’s see here, what are the top five selling games in this catagory, five because five is a psychologically satisfying number, alright, now how are we gonna decide who wins? Don’t wanna spend money by “hiring”
people or what the fuck, don’t wanna spend money, I know, let the gamers decide! Who better to choose than the gamers themselves, god knows I’M not a gamer. Alright, our profit is up, loss is down, I think we have a program!”. Pisses me off.

Well I had an idea about how it could be run. I like your idea of an independant panel, and also showing percentages of the popular vote. Therefore lets take one from politics and call it good. You could have a “game of the year” award by the judge panel, and also have a “game of the year, popular vote”, effectively having two awards for each category. While this would lengthen it considerably, it would provide a check to each category, both the fans would be heard (but would be checked by the judge award, in the case of fanboys and fangirls) and the panel would be heard (but would be checked by the fans award). This way you have both the panel and fans being heard and eeryone can leave happy. you could have different style’s of trophies for the fan and judge panel awards. It provides a myriad of ideas. just food for thought

Suggestions? Hell yeah i’ve got something for you.
First, lets say we keep it a “popularity contest” the only way that it could even be considered fare is if corporate kept their nose out of the show, and the list should include ALL games from that year. Even if you didn’t do open voting and did something like base it on sells, it amounts to the same thing. Second, we dont need all these advertisements. Also, i agree, why not pay more homage to the GAMES, not to other jock or pop bull shit that gamers would have no interest in.
Now admittedly, I have other interests other then games, but seriously……. stay focused on the fucking theme of the show.
The way i see it, the only kind of show that could be considered fare is a totally independent program that would be ran by the Gamers themselves. Christ what is happening to my past time here? Joe and every one here can tell that the greedy sons of bitches of “corporate” realized a while back that people like Video games, and now are exploiting the shit out of it. Used to be, $40 got you no less then 20 hours of game play, now they release games that cost $60 and you walk through in no less then 6 or 9 hours.
All this, the show, the industry, all of it can be fixed if we the gamers begin to DEMAND quality, more bang for our buck. So my suggestion is dont buy the games they push in your face without some research, don’t trust reviewers sponsored by “corporate” rent first, buy if you like it.
    EvilEye out.

G-Phoria is pretty much the only “real” award show on television for games, and it’s pretty much devolved into an hour-long episode run by the X-Play staff rather than the full-blown award ceremony it used to be. But it still gives a good portrayal of what games actually should win along with percentages of how many votes the candidates got. The VGAs are mostly just run by interest groups who have some stakes in what candidate wins what award.

    Joe,

Great assessment of the VGAs. I think on the whole it just demonstrates how as gamers we are not only misunderstood by the industry that panders to us, but also misrepresented when that industry tries to advertise the medium.
For some years now my brother has worked IT at a MAJOR game developer and has often told me stories of the people who work there. For *years* now, the heads of these organisations have gravitated away from people who do it because they love it, to people who don’t love it but realise how much money there is in it. These awards are only the tip of the larger inability for the industry to understand *why* we love games so much and how to keep it burning strong.
For a real games awards show to work, the people with the money finally need to understand that they are actually engaging in an art form as well as entertainment. Unfortunately with the video game industry worth more than the movie industry worldwide, the people with the money just tend to see more money and a juvenile way to exploit it.
Let’s remember though, it’s just an awards show and we have to remember the real contest comes with what we decide to pay our hard earned money for. Some dude can stand up on a stage and talk all he likes about how much an honour it is to accept this award, it doesn’t mean I’m going to buy his game. I’ve often felt like we need to be a bit smarter with our wallets as gamers, but that’s another subject.
    Great Video.
    -Johnny M.

Pfft, I knew they would suck balls this year. It’s just a show for the meat heads and frat boys that watch Spike. Why do you think Megan Fox won that award? Exactly…
They know nothing about gaming and they know nothing about gamers. However, it rakes in money so you get tons of companies advertising in it and promoting it. It’s as you said, a big circlejerk.

I think it would be better off Spike, but then where to go? G4 is not an option for me… -_- although at least it’s supposed to be a channel about gaming. They need to include catagories, as you said, like best PC game and best RTS or RPG of the year. I don’t know about the voting, but I do agree that fans voting is a BAD idea. I would have voted L4D2 best 360 game too… *embarassed* although Dragon Age would have gotten my vote for PC.
Oh and, I think the special guests should be people like the original creators of games like Mario or MGS or Final Fantasy…just getting those off the top of my head. People that gamers know and care about, you know?
Which brings me back to the jock and frat boy problem. American games are all they can process, from what I know. Which means that audiance should be left out of the equation entirely unless they play games from Nintendo or SEGA or Square.
I am just spewing ideas out of my butt ATM. Already it’s sounding like a better show to me…

I agree with you joe the vga’s are a joke. I would like to see you and channel awesome put together your own yearly show of best games. However, the only way that the vga’s improve is to take them away from spike tv and put it on another channel such as syfy or even adult swim. I don’t know what the chances of that happening are do you? Because Spike tv basically treats the vga’s as their own view of what the stereotypical man wants out of a video game show. The only way this changes is to put it on a station that will treat video games with respect and not some stereotypical view of what Hollywood views a video gamer wants.

i agree with you joe when it comes to the panel along with open voting and for panel members it should be made of seasoned gamers with little to no true affiliation to a gaming company or studio (kinda like what they do with referees)

as for the vid u showed some good points i found myself surprised at a lot of the outcomes as well though i mainly watch it for the exclusive trailers to upcomin games

    hope to see more soon

    hi Joe

why don’t you make a Video Game Award Show?
i think we all agree with this idea you and some other
game critics are well known in the interwebs ;)

and i think you would do a fantastic job
get the real nerds and video game lovers in your show and viola
no open voting and only precent shown
all you would need you got your studio and special effects

hell i even think there are some cool gaming celebs that would come and join you :D

so think about it you are our last hope to a rocking gaming award show :O

Are there any awards shows that AREN’T total bullshit? Music awards always go to whoever the labels are pushing, same with the TV and movie ones. The Oscars have all sorts of weird prejudices against certain genres, and quite often a movie will be Best Picture when hardly anyone saw it and it’s forgotten in another year, usually movies using shallow and blatant emotional manipulation to tell shallow and obvious stories. Anyone remember Crash? Anyone?

This awards show isn’t for real Gamers, it’s for the kind of guy who plays mindless shooters or racers once in a while and doesn’t really care about it, the guys who barely notice Halo has a single player mode and don’t care about the industry and pastime itself at all.

Well, being German I don’t really know the show…but I can see where your problems are, especially with the special guests. Also laughed about the Twilight-joke :D
BTW: The first chick was Olivia Wilde from House M.D…but one of the patients of this series, Felicia Day (who also makes a kick-ass online series about a MMO-guild, it’s called “The Guild”…you should check it out!) would be so much better as a special guest. Why? Because she’s a nerd. And Olivia Wilde is NOT. Those football-guys are NOT.

(I didn’t read, comments, sorry if i repeat)

Well in my opinion: Voting should be done by professional reviewers. Not a selected bunch, no. I mean they should rally up the top 10-20-what ever gaming magazines let it be online or offline and give all of their non-freelancer game critics an invitation card, to voting. Of course i don’t say freelance critics shouldn’t have the chance, but from them, only get those with experience and acknowledgment in the business. This way we would get non-fanboyish votes. Also this would give one heck of a chance for magazines and critics to grow their popularity. Let it be by buying a two scare meters spot on the wall for their logo or hosting a big pre-awards writing contest where their readers could tell their own opinions on who should win and why.
BTW: Don’t get me wrong. The magazines wouldn’t vote as one. Every critic would have his/her own vote, and they should only vote in categories they want to. (So a critic who only plays strategic games does not have to decide if Halo or CoD is better for example.)

As for the show… Well marketing can’t be kept out of course but as i wrote above it should be payed by companies that have something to do with gaming. Besides magazines it could be “brought to us by” different gaming companies. Heck it should look like E3.
Give the supporting companies credit with dressing up a few people as Napoleonic Soldiers and have a short fight scene up there with other fake Russian soldiers. After the scene you can display a huge “Napoleon: Total War” logo on screen and go on with the awards. After an award finding its owner: BAM! Huge space battle on screen… “Star Wars Battlefront 3″ (a geek can dream… yes a geek can dream). Onto the next award!
And so on, and so on.

This is how i think it should be done.

    Good review also :)

P.S.: BTW: Those silver painted girls… I don’t know about you but in my opinion those could only turn on the “Bicentennial Man”.

i went into this only caring about the new trailers. i completely agree about the stupid celebrity appearances, i think the one i hated the most was jersey shore and mike tyson. mike is definitely no actor and you could tell everything he said was scripted, i thought his reaction of “who the hell are you?” to seeing the cast of jersey shore was the only thing genuine about most of the celebrity appearances on the show. the awards were also bull, studio of the year? rocksteady with arkham asylum winning over uncharted and MW2? i guess left 4 dead 2 get best 360 just because its not on ps3. with the amount of fanboy help and executive meddling i’m surprised halo didn’t win. what kind of category is best soundtrack, and how did dj hero win over guitar hero and rockband? southpark winning best movie/tv game? best cast being woverine? these winners irk me to no end. i agree with the popularity percentages needing to be shown.

i think they need to pull in a panel of gaming celebrities(either celebrity gamers or people we consider cool, like indie reviewers like yourself, yatzhee, etc and pro gamers and people like the mike and jerry from penny arcade or scott from pvp) and more mainstream(read corporate or magazine and online reviewers from bigger sites) to help with deciding what wins. i think the winner should be the game that gets the most percentage of votes from the community, and the one that gets the most percentage from the panel. just add all the percentages together and see who comes out on top.

also throw out the musical performances, unless its being playing on a music game. the panel should also be the people that announce the awards. i understand the advertising, but i still hate being bombarded with it the way they did. the only thing they got right was having the new trailers for games, that was good to see. but with the show being this bad overall, it can only improve. so heres to a better one next year to complain about.

Can’t agree with you more Joe, the show sucked, it was too gimmicky. You where spot on about every point, except the part about NHL, ok I admit that I’m a fan-boy of the series, been for a long while. But bear in mind that NHL is really popular outside the US as well. I’m from Sweden and it’s really big around here, the good thing about it, is that it’s not only the NHL teams, it’s national teams and other countries leagues as well. And for the last 2-3 years they’ve really introduced a lot of new things. Thanks for a great show!

I saw the awards and to be honest i hated it. First off Mark Hamill should have gotten the award not Jack Black I mean come on and how Jack put down the other people? wtf? That’s just rude. I don’t care if he was joking or not, thats something you should not do I’m sorry. There should have been games that should have been on the show that weren’t. I feel like the games they list are just games that are the top selling games. I play Monster Hunter Freedom Untied and that game is great. Hell Devil May Cry 4 should have been on that show. There are so many games that should have been there that wasn’t. and I agree with Angry Joe about the Hosts and the Games.

Great video, it’s nice to see someone actually mention the selfless marketing of this FOX Teen Awards meets the B-list of the Mtv Awards. I caught the last hour of this ceremony or should I say the last hour of this commercial on Sunday. I don’t watch much G4tv but their Best of 2009 was more straight forward and to the point. The Spike’s VGA just felt like a big advertisement to me. I wish more people would be as vocal about it like you. I honestly think this hurts us gamers because it’s not taken seriously.

This is all bullshit , if stuff stays like this i’m afraid to imagine a future for gaming .
If they wanted to bring stars to present awards they should indeed bring some that care like our dear Jack Black , hell even Vin Diesel , he’s a D&D geek for crying out loud , The Nerd ,
Maybe some producers from the respective game’s company etc.
I like the ideea with certain members deciding the game , and to solve who gets to be on there , well the dudes and dudettes that really have a vast gaming knowlege and experience.
Left for Dead 2 best game ? BULLSHIT …Modern Warfare 2 is much better and sold over 6 milion copies while LFD2 isn’t a big improvement over the first one and sold just over 740.000 .
    Male human … wtf ?

I totally agree on your comments on the random celebreties Joe, gaming shows need gaming celebrities. Developers like John Carmack, Will Wright or Sid Meyer, or even celebrity gamers like Robin Williams or Vin Diesel. I know that might be outside the budget of the Spike TV VGA’s, but if they want any sort of credibility among gamers, then that’s what it takes.
Oh yeah, Megan Fox winning a video game award…for acting?! Seriously, that’s just sad…

I agree. I think that it would make a lot more sense to have a separate category for fan favorites and one where a panel of expert votes, then, compile the two scores and select a game based on some composite of the two. What annoys me the most is the utter lack of integrity; this is an awards ceremony for the best of the best, a game must prove its worth in sales gross, and positive reviews before being considered, and some of the nominees were placed on the ballot based on hype. Finally, Joe, where are my Borderlands, Modern Warfare 2, Brutal Legend and other broketober reviews?

Even tho it would (will?) be awesome, comparing a channel awesome award giving with something like VGA is like comparing a family Christmas get together with the pilgrimage to Kaaba. Most of the gaming community wouldn’t get the chance to see it.

But Joe is right. I love hockey, and would have voted for NHL’10 in a heartbeat , it is amazing. Hockey is an international sport, but not at popularity of soccer. Only in the US is football that big, but that’s still a huge voting block, and Madden this year was really good.
