Army of Two the 40th Day Review
The Short Version: Army of Two: The 40th Day is a Massive Improvement over the Original Army of Two game. This is how a sequel should be done from a technical standpoint. Unfortunately, the title is held back by its short length, unfulfilling story and seriously disappointing ending.
The Review:
What you’ll Like:
• Excellent Graphics that generate Action-Packed Cinematic Cutscenes
• Welcome Additions like Mock Surrenders, Morality Choices, and Mask & Armor Customization
• An Amazing and Deep Weapons Customization System
• Improved Partner and Enemy A.I. Removed most all of the problems I had in the Original.
What you’ll Hate:
• The Length is Short at around 6-7 Hours, slightly more with Pointless Hidden Items.
• Wheres the Story Here? It doesnt match the Popcorn Flick Feel of the Rest of the Game. Forgettable Cliche Villain.
• Extremely Luck-luster Ending, that Pissed Me off. (Not because of the Choice it forces but because of the Anti-Climax)
Final Verdict:
7/10

The thing that made the first one so great was the story and the settings. Being a mercenary felt so cool and it just had a cool over the top action story. For me that was what made the first speicial.
Hey Joe…you think AOT 40th day’s ending was a slap in the face…you should review Turning Point….that whole game was a big slap..no scratch that…it was a big sledgehammer in to the face. Anyway, good review.
FX long term trading is challenging but can be rewarding!
Thank you for such a fantastic blog. Where else could anyone get that kind of info written in such a perfect way? I have a presentation that I am presently working on, and I have been on the look out for such information.

well really i didnt mind the ending i found it was like that because it was a shooter and i didnt want an all new epically hard to kill enemy like the hevys we’re on my first play threw but i understand what you mean anti climatic i know btw i didnt hear about this game untill i seen your video about it befor the review and i say its been one of the games that have taken alot of my time and made me more of a gamer after losing my copy of cod4 =p
Sex harassment lawyers California Hey – nice website, rightful superficial around few blogs, seems a pretty overnice document you are using. I’m currently using WordPress for a few of my sites but sensing to change one of them over to a structure same to yours as a experiment run. Anything in item you would urge roughly it?
which kinda ruined it for me i completed it three times but over 2 years cause i forced my self to forget the bad ending and just play
a games ending effects my gameplay so much, i completed resident evil 5 like 3 times..
the last boss fight deffenatly is a final boss but he never dies lol, it pissed my dad off so much so the next times i completed the game i had to do it solo (nooooooooooooooo)
hey Joe! great review again! i dont have a console so i cant speak of any experience about the game. IT looks great but a lackluster story line is usually more of my main concern with ANY game! except carmageddon 2 hehe.
keep up the great work! glad the kitty was saved!
ending is important if theirs a sequel
The end was one of the biggest dissapointments ever basically done so there would not be another army two added to the series. An the online play the gfx have been toned down aswel as all those custom weps you make not being able to be used online
could anyone please tell me hoe to get rid of your statistics in army of two 40th day please
I actually think that a games ending should be judged serperately than the rest of the game. Yes game endings can piss us off, but that is only one part of the game. If you have a fantastic game and loved everything but the ending, then the ending should be judged seperate.
Now if the entire game was shit, then it doesn’t have to be judged seperately because everything was crap.
The AS-KR1 requires you to have a previous save from the first game yeah? Does that mean I can’t get the trophy fo having all guns and custom parts? If so that sucks and I’ll have to rent the first game, lol.
no the as-kr1 and the grand pinger do not affect your ability to gain the trophy/acheivement for have all weapons and parts. I don’t know this for sure but thats what Ive heard.
The information presented is top notch. I’ve been doing some research on the topic and this post answered several questions.
Cool, there is actually some great ideas on here some of my subscribers may find this relevant, I will send them a link, many thanks.
I think that an ending will not stop me from playing it, it may piss me off but not really stop me. Also it took you 6-7 hours to play through the game? It took me 4-5 hours first play through, since then I’ve beaten it like 5 or so times. And I agree the story telling was horrible. When I reached the end of the second last level I was like why kill him I don’t even know who he is. After my third play through I figured it out. I would just like to say the AS-KR1 rocks and its the only assault rifle I use now. The extraction game mode is fun, but the versus online is horrible. I was kind of hoping you would include it. As for the cats they are Maneki Neko cats which are supposed to be good luck according to the Chinese. But I do like the way they changed the heavies because they are sooo much better than in the first one.
dude please answer were did you get that jacket
Imagine playing Mass Effect and when you get the last member for your team the game stops and a text pops up saying “with the knowledge of your 7 members you stopped Saron and the reapers, good going captain” THE END
The ending should be the best part of any game (well not sport games, they all suck), but in general, ending needs to top everything else in the game.
p.s please more reviews with the cat. Cute cat. LOL
I find one of the most important aspect of a good game, if I care what’s happening and want to see what happens next I’m going to enjoy the game that much more.
If the game has crappy ending then I won’t play it again. A good should leaver the gammer feeling satisfied and exited that they beat the game kinda like we accomplished something Which in my opinion would make me want to play that game all over. An ending that is slap to the face, will make not want to play it again nor get any add on or down loadable content. It will just sit their and collect dust.
This is also your best review yet IMO. Hilarious bonus with you and your cat, lol.
BTW this and “ExploreInsanity” are the same I just wasn’t logged in.
When the video game industry has managed to develop itself into an entertainment industry that not only rivals the motion picture industry, but has the ability to surpass it in terms of how invested the “viewer/participant” is in it, the ending should be just as important as any other aspect of the game.
That said, people watch movies or television shows or even read books for a variety of reasons. They’ll watch this movie because they really like the lead actor, they really enjoy this director’s films, or they’re big fans of the source material if it’s an adaptation. You’re bound to respond to an ending accordingly to how important the story is in your playthrough, and arguably the ending *is* the most important part of a story. The Army of Two games never did it for me, but if the team has full aspirations to not only make an engaging action title but also provide an interesting and investing storyline along with it, to cop out and write yourselves into a corner will rob a player of a feeling of worth.
The best reason to include a storyline in a game is to invest the player and have them actually care about the outcome of the events portrayed in the game. To cheap out on that investment robs a sense of immersion from the player and I find destroys interest in the title, as well as creating a lack of faith in the future releases of that team.
it was a good game i thought the story could of used work but i liked the chaos of it plains crashing into buildings whole city blocks turning into mounds of rubble the sound of gunfire and screaming in the distance not to mention the seemingly perverted Russian that helps you out for a bit
. as for the judging of the game i thing the ending, the story, and the multilayer should be judged separately you don’t like one aspect there’s still two others to hope for hope to see everyone online
Hi gamers in the Angry Joe Land.
My opinion about this, is that the end is not that important if the overall game is great, there are not many games that give you the classic big and tough final boss like Final Fantasy, but look at the end of COD MW2, FALLOUT 3, Metal Gear 4, Uncharted 2, some of them are great.
But the hidden items got to be like the Batman A-A game, related with the story.
Congratulations that the gun made it in, I voted.
Sorry english not my first language.
Metel Gear 4 had a long ass ending, and it was a conclusion and even so much as did justice to the saga, imo
Endings can really piss me off, but it doesn’t ruin the entire game for me. If there is good multiplayer or simply content that keeps you coming back then I will not be so hard on a game. However if it’s single player and has nothing worth coming back to, and the ending sucks then it really ruins it for me.
Exactly! I have been waiting for this review for a long time Joe!
The ending part was hystarical! especially the ending of the game (which the producer said clear to your face that that wasnt going to happen!).
But alas, this game is just so much fun! especially with the weapon customization. Havent been able to use the AS KR 1 yet but am happy that it is in the game!
I think that endings are important to a game, except in one of two ways:
1) if he rest of the game is balooney, then the ending can make up for the hours that you put into it.
2) if the core of the game is fun, then the ending could be left off.
The problem with this game was they were trying to add two diffferent stories at the same time to quickly: Them trying to get out of Shanghai and the with Jonah.
Hey, the next game could fix these important issues and we could get either a 8-9 from you Joe!
Yeah, this game isn’t exactly Metal Gear… it doesn’t NEED a suitable conclusion, although I agree 110% that it was very stupid to not give it one anyways.
I can forgive a poor ending, if the game play is still amazing. If I want to go back and keep on playing, I can let the ending slide. Excellent review as always Joe, and I admire the honesty. I am very happy that the “ASSKICKER I” lives up to the name!
Kitties = almost every guys weakness?! I think so. So cute and lovable.
Well, story is everything to me. I love getting into it, thinking about it. Though, now I’m curious to just how bad the ending is. Grr. What scares me more than you saying the ending is bad, is that the overall story is bad. Its hard for me to sit through a game that i can’t get into (If I’m playing by myself) However, at the same time, this game seems great for coop. And who doesn’t want to sit with a good friend and kill shit?
So I guess I’ll just have to try it out for myself.
awesome cat
also its sad for pc gamers like me it won’t be released
It’s true, when a game has a terrible ending I almost never pick it up and play it, same for animes. It could be the best game or anime ever but if the ending sucks then I will not play or watch. But there are some exceptions for games, like Bioshock and probably Army of Two cuz it’s like a buddy cop game and I love games with heavy co-op integrated features in it. So I will be picking this up for PS3. Joe you need a PS3 for Uncharted 2 man, seriously get one, lol.
I agree with you on most parts, it’s a really good game. But I’m kind of disappointed you didn’t mention the glitch stopping gamers from using the AS-KR1! I’ve had to settle for the SAW until they patch!
No, I don’t think an ending can kill a game. It can certainly kill the mood or drop the game a little bit, but it won’t kill it. Want an example? How about Fallout 3? Bad ending, great game. Or Fable 2, TERRIBLE ending, great game.
Good review. I doubt I’ll buy it despite helping to create the AS-KR1, but I hope I might rent it in the future.
Regarding the final battle in Fable 2, I was ready to pitch my x-box out the window I was so pissed off. I felt robbed of mine in game vengeance.
I was surprised that they changed the AS-KR1′s secondary fire to a sniper rifle.
As for the ending, it’s definitely very important to your overall opinion because you need to feel like your effort was worth it. I know I was reluctant to play again, at least on single player. And I was especially disappointed by the story; the last game actually had one. Sure it was just a Cloverfield survival story, but even then they could have executed it better. The morality moments were an interesting addition, but once you see how both choices play out, its like, “what’s the point, that guy will die anyway” or “I didn’t know she was an assassin!” Also makes your efforts seem pointless, unless you get a cool gun out of it.
In response to your question on endings, I think that they should be factored in, but not too much seeing as there are certain cases where a ending may be awful but overall the game is still great and fun to play even after being let down by however dissapointing the ending may be. To give a example, Assassins Creed 2 and Gears of War 2. In AC2 I thought the ending was awful mainly because I hated the story, but at the same time I would still recommend the game to anyone. With GoW2 both me and my brother thought that the final mission in that game was incredibly anticlimactic and came out of nowhere, and especially when compared to the first Gears, was not anywhere near as fun, but I would still say it was definately worth the purchase for how much fun everything else was.
On the subject of the review itself, I am glad that you now have your own footage of the game to use, seeing as it will much better illustrate your point than just using trailers, and I overall found the review to be funny, entertaining, informative, and balanced, and it is for those reasons that you are quickly becoming one of my favorite reviewers. I am glad to hear that the game is good for a rental seeing as I have been waiting for a new good co-op game to play alongside my brother, and I have been wondering wether this was at the least rental worthy.
ending does matter but only in terms of memorability,
i was disappointed yes but i do like playing a game that that doesn’t force you to play online to get the full experience
it has that old school feeling of just you with a friend just playing the hell out of a game
i was rather disappointed by the pistols in the game just three….
while the security guard has a revolver made me think i could get it too,
hopefully they will release an alternate ending and maybe a second optional level
like they did in the last game
that will really turn a good game into a great game in my opinion
anyway cool review!!
Well to answer your question Joe , i personaly will hate the game if it builds up to nothing.
You wouldn’t imagine how close i was to bashing my computer when i saw the ending for Dragon Age Origins for example.
I mean wouldn’t you be pissed off if you would work your ass off and got absolutely no ending that was worth the work.
Me , when i play the game i get involved into the story , and when that story doesn’t get good or doesn’t get a ending worthy of it , then that’s too bad for the game .
