Will It Suck? Star Trek Online (Preview Series)

Joe Asks the Tough Questions about the Upcoming Mega Title Star Trek Online! While Admiral Joe Returns to Battle his most powerful Opponent Yet, KHAAAANNNN!
Things That Might Suck:
• Star ship Damage Modeling.
• Diplomatic & Abstract Mission Balance. (How many versus combat-centric missions?)
• Are the Klingon’s Neglected? Advance through level through PvP. No Episodic Mission Story Content.
Things That Might Kick Ass:
• The Genesis System. Procedurally Generates Planets & Systems on the Fly – Save the locations you find and share with friends.
• Dual Gameplay. (Unlike its main likely competitor, Star Wars The Old Republic, STO has both Space Combat & Ground Combat)
• Its STAR TREK!
Hype Level:
10/10
I hope to god this game doesnt suck! Am I being Objective? Fuck No! I’m a HUGE Star Trek Geek and I plan to sink hours upon hours into STO. Hell, I’ve been watching alot of The Original Series as well as The Next Generation to get into the Star Trek Mood. See you guys in the Server in Just Under a Month!

Until the last two patches, the game was playable if a little repetitive. Then came the NPC nerf. Suddenly, a game that had some difficulty became my little pony in space. My escort cruiser became a godlike being that could engage and destroy ships 5+ levels above it with little or no damage.
This game has failed in it’s mission to provide a fun experience to the fans of Star Trek. I would even go so far as to say that it directly insults their intelligence to even play it. I recommend saving your money for awhile and see if they even have an mmo in 3 months.
I play the beta, Many bugs many “rush content” however. Because its a beta i will play till the retail will release i am not quiting yet like some “people try to @troll the game off” thats bullshit so thats why i will not leave it. However the beta is not what i hope for. The genesis works great but i have not found any space monsters yet. The pvp area is not me game style i am more the explorer and the diplomat. I am more the ground area the space is more like the old starfleet command and i have them all 3 titles. And it kicks but thats is not what startrek is. Lets say the retail sucks or its the same “rush” game i think it is. I will stop but i keep me eye open if the fixs. But again lets hope the open everything in the retail and not 1/10 like the have now. I give it a 6 because its star trek game play i stick to a 5+ Hype a 10. I want to believe this game rocks. “lets hope”
Have played the beta and cancel the pre order, i found this game very limited in what you can do in regards to a mmo, alot of cool stuff they could have added has been missed in the rush to get this game out. ship combat gets old way too quickly with the ground missions to be alittle dry. The pace of the game was fast which did get me hooked at first but with the gameplay changing very little over the hours i played i was very disapointed. I wanted to love this game but when ask by friend is it any good, i spit out a few weak perks before having to admit it wasn’t very good. I love star trek and feel this game has missed so massive options which would have made this game epic. Would love to know how everyone else found it, including you joe keep up the great work!!
STO = Awesome.
They just need to fix server stabilization!
Joe, the good thing about MMOS, is that its not all about launch, you also have the months and years later that it can be improved, WOW wasn’t the best game at launch either, and look at it now! Even though the players might not be the best, the game is pretty good! And STO will be no different, if people are patient enough to wait and tell Cryptic what they want to see, I actually have come up with some ideas to be able to improve STO, mainly having to do with Fleets and what fleets can do, but I do agree with the Klingons on one thing, they’re kinda being neglected, and I personally think that the first patch should be Klingon-Oriented with better customization options and PVE content for them, but for the first 45 days, Cryptic will know my name, very, very well with all the ideas I have.
I beg to differ. WoW WAS the best when it came out, and was still good during TBC. It totally started to suck when Wrath was released. Most games are better at the start before developers give in to all the people complaining on the forums to buff thier toon, and nerf each instance, and other class that isnt thiers, or place because they wiped.
Joe, according to your twitter postings you have the game. So, does it or does it not SUCK? The world waits.
Joe you gotta get in the open beta and make a fleet.
Well, ive pre-ordered it, so it better not suck!
Pre-orders get a few bonuses, the most awesome one being the classic “KHAAAAAAN!!!!” emote, no1 else will get it.
Hope I get to play with ya Joe, that’d be sweet.
I definitely wish the game luck. Science Fiction MMOs have had real bad luck in the past. Every single one in which you can step out of the ship as a humanoid avatar has sunk. Eve online is pretty much the only surviving Sci Fi MMO and that is one in which you just play the ship. It’s so rare that you can even include surviving Online Dungeon Crawlers, with Sci Fi basis, in the mix and still easily count them in 1 hand. In fact, 2 fingers. Eve being 1 for the MMO, and Phantasy Star being 1 for the Dungeon Crawl online (but not MMO) game. Anything else, made fatal mistakes that pretty much took them out of the running. The fan base looking for Sci-fi games, of this ilk, is sadly lesser than the high-fantasy population; but they have demands too. In general, usually the nail in the coffin is the launch. Yeah. The game not only needs to launch with a good degree of content, it also needs to address all of its advertised features, out of the box. Those two things have been imperative for the survival of the game. So your concern is proper. It’s not just Star Trek fans, but all Sci-fi fans are patient enough to wait for a fantastic launch instead of a possible unfinished launch.
A Sci-fi MMO that launches looking unfinished gets incredibly hammered by reviewers and the gaming community. Even if the potential for greatness is there, and the possibility of it happening within a few months, nothing kills an MMO faster than a horribly unfinished launch. That usually creates a lot of damage, and it’s a big uphill battle to fix it.
Epxerience?
Anyways, I have a feeling that this game is going to suffer from a few major problems besides what was said in the video, most of them story-wise.
1. The developers haven’t really put an emphasis on dialogue in their previews, which is a major driving force in the television series. Because of this, it’s possible the events in this game are going to be scripted, culminating in generic action sequences featuring little (or possibly no) speaking parts. In fact, there may not be any real communication at all aside from a basic text-box, which really detracts from the feeling that your actually making an impact on gameplay other than having the choice of obliterating some helpless soul with your phaser or merely stunning him.
2. The no dialogue issue also cuts into how you associate yourself with your character. Instead of having the potential to be a bad ass Star Fleet Admiral who quotes Shakespeare, gets into fistfights, and occasionally breaks into song, you’ll basically play a generic action-hero with no sense of emotion in the universe and barely enough intelligence to fly a starship. Soon, you’ll have an entire fleet of ship commanders who all act and feel the same. It’s a little embarrassing really.
3. My last issue with this game is how well it will keep your attention. With a game like this, there’s bound to be a massive amount of content. But pretty soon it will start to get a little redundant. Eventually it will end up like Mass Effect, where you feel as though all there is is an endless cycle of fighting and exploration, and you have to force yourself to play through the rest of the game.
It still looks good, just not absolutely breathtaking. The way it looks now, I’ll give it a solid 4 out of 5.
1 thing i really hope they include is an internal translater for 2 main reasons
1. will help to build your online comunity if everybody knows what everybody else is saying.
2. when did you ever see kirk pull out a klingon to english phrase book
I just had to laugh really hard, because I started steam and they were advertising for STO. “Okay, i thought let’s have a look”. If you buy the game on steam, you get several bonus items, such as uniforms or this one:
You actually get an KHAAAN-Emote! xD I mean, imagine your STO charakter suddenly shout “KHAAAAAAN”
Well I remembered, Joe did the Khaan thing in his video too, so I had to post a comment
Speak of the Devil. http://www.Fileplanet.com has a closed beta sneak peek if you have an account there. Will get to answer my own questions faster then release it looks.
Sorry Joe the Genesis system isn’t in there.
You are going to be amazingly disappointed in this title
Man, those people who responded to the video on your link are real assholes. The only input they’re giving is how annoying they think Joe is, and that’s not why he made the vid.
i posted this on the real STO forums if u want more input

Having an opportunity to play a bit of the beta (don’t tell anyone), I’ll give a bit of info about what the game is like as of this past saturday. Space combat is damn fun. While ship damage isn’t dynamic, you WILL see damage skins appear at 75% hull strength, 50% and finally 25%… at 0% you explode. Your hull will regenerate over time, but slowly… this can be sped up by having trained in certain abilities (either abilities you learn or abilities your Engineering bridge officer learns) and the amount of crew you have (depends on what ship you captain). Let me back up a bit first. Your first ship is a light cruiser class… it pretty much allows you access to basic abilities you’ll have at your next promotion. There you get to pick a ship type you wish to captain: cruisers, escorts, and science vessels. This starter ship gives you 3 seats for your bridge officers, 1 of each type (tactical, engineering, science).
Escorts are your glass cannons. They’re small, fast and agile, and pack a punch. However, they have weak shields and hull stats when compared to cruisers and science vessels. They do allow for more tactical bridge officers, which give you offense buffs and some allow you to target specific subsystems (shields/weapons, etc) however, this is a temporary disabling for the enemy ship. Escorts are the only ships that can be armed with cannon-type weapons which have small firing arcs, but pack a huge punch.
Cruisers are your engineering ships and have much stronger hulls and shields than escorts, but they are far less manuverable. They can take a beating, but can also dish it out. This gives you another engineering station over your starter ship. Engineering officers giver you defense buffs like repairing your hull in a hurry or emengency power to shields or extending your shields over a friendly ship.
Science vessels I don’t know too much about. From what I’ve seen, they’re more of a support role as of the first promotion after your starter ship. they have a second science seat obviously, but they can do a LOT of tricks. disabling shields on enemies, confusing them into firing on their own allies, things like that. they lack firepower, however. they do sport the strongest shield stats, but the hull is weaker than a cruiser of the same rank.
Ground combat is pretty straight forward. you can run, shoot, jump, crouch (which improves damage output on your weapons), roll out of the way of a thrown grenade or an exploding phaser turret. If you play solo, your AI bridge officers come with you (you can arm them with weapons, armor, and personal shields like you do yourself), and you can take up to 4 of them with you. If you don’t have 4 bridge officers, a basic security officer fills out the ranks. These you can’t modify. They’re literally your red shirts
Each weapon you have (you personally can carry two) has 3 attacks. your primary shot, a special shot (everything from a spread fire to a cone effect to a sniper shot) and a melee attack if your target gets too close. if you’re in a group, the other player(s) take the spot that would be an AI bridge officer. Not enough people for a full team? not to worry. you get to pick which bridge officer from which player comes with you.
promotions… they come every 10 levels, sorta. you start the game as level 0… an ensign. then after the tutorial, you’re level 1, a lieutenant and you go from LT 1 – 10. at lvl 11, you become a lt commander (and access to a new ship type of your choice). at 21, a commander and so on up until admiral. there are 5 ranks in Star Trek Online.
Back to ships for a moment. each ship class has 3 hulls to choose from. so, you can’t say pick the Defiant as your first real ship and make it a science vessel. no. Each class at each promotion has a specific hull type which you can customize, though, each hull is pretty similar. So, at LT, you choose cruiser as your ship of choice. You then get to customize your ship (change the nacelles, struts, primary hull, neck, and saucer) from 3 different types… OR you can just make the entire ship 1 type. For example at LT cruisers, your choices are a Constitution Refit, a Vesper (think 25th century style Excelsior class), and Excalibur (25th Century Constitution). Now, none of those ships will move any differently than the other, so, it’s all cosmetic. You can change the hull coloring, your NCC number and the ship name too.
Weapons, shields, and other items you can buy or loot. This is true for both ground items and ship items. Ship items will only be looted in space and personal items on ground. Always look at the stats. If you loot a MK II phaser pistol, then loot ANOTHER MK II phaser pistol, one may have slightly different damage stats or even a secondary firing mode that you like better.
So, while I’ve only played a bit of beta, I can say that it is a fun game… but there is PLENTY of room to improve and add on to. As of my last time in, Klingons were still being fleshed out as there isn’t much for them to do yet aside from PVP…oh, PVP… haven’t tried it on ground yet, but space PVP is rediculously fun.
The story-based missions you get are really fun and pull in some big bad guys from both TOS and TNG (another Doomsday machine makes an appearance as does another Crystaline Entity)
All I can say is give the game a shot and see for yourself if you like it or not. But I will say this, it is WAY more than just Champions online in space. And really give it a chance. I will say that I got a LITTLE tired flying around in the starter ship, but after I got my promotion, it’s been crazy fun again.
I don’t know, I think Star Wars The Old Republic is going to blow STO out of the water. Reasons:
1. Bioware
2. Star Wars
3. KOTOR
4. Fully Voice Acted
5. Choice system with Light, Grey, and Dark consequences with resulting in
different character customization, story, and skills.
6. Heavy story emphasis.
7. Not bounced between multiple companies like STO.
8. Jedi (Even if they were stupid and split them into 2 classes)
9. Two flushed out factions accessible right from the start.
10. Bioware
STO looks a bit like Star Wars Galaxies post Jump to Light speed and NGE,
Rushed, overly simple, and limited customization. It will certainly be
something Star Trek fans like though.
Are you going to be doing a Will it Suck for SWTOR in the near future?
I’ve played very little when it comes to MMOs and I am really looking forward to this. But I hope this doesn’t have Age of Conan syndrome.
Ok my opinion on this starting with what might kill it
Agree with the mission aspect, though I remember seeing int he previews of the Planet killer from TOS making an appearance, though my be not enough strange in exploring strange new worlds. Also the gensis creator sounds much like the mission creator that is in Anarchy Online (You can custom the mission to being easy or hard, combat or skill, xp or loot. Then creates a random design dungeon to play in the mish).
Klingons going to be all PvP does sound bad, but there race is very combat oriented and other then a few ambassador missions for TNG and DS9. They seem to be nothing but fighting, even among themselves. Also there is 3 races that are under the Klingon faction, though a lack of there ships is disappointing. Though with few ship modules, in the ST universe the klingons really stuck with certain hull designs due to lack of resources, after all the fedration kept them afloat for years. But at least they keep the basics with the bird of prey, Vort, Vo’cha, Neg’ath and the newer Carrier and light escort. Though I hope they do added the orian and Gorn ships as a FREE patch.
Things that kicks ass:
Agree, it is startrek and that does rate well, from the few screens I seen combat looks simuler to ST:Starfleet command (IHO was a nice star trek game on its own.) An the fact you will have more players at your side in the PvP seems to be some epic fights, and how to say makes a good day to die.
Many ships from fedaration, though they skimp on the Klingons they flesh out many key features to the Feds from the screen point, able to custom out even your bridge with different control panels and even the skill tree makes it so easy to start out, but later down makes it easier for a single choice and role for you and your ship as well as customzing the way your ship looks due to parts makes it seem a lot of possible combinations. Yes the lack of battle damage is nice, but the ablity to make my gaxaly class ship looks different from someone else makes it up IMHO.
I myself am giving this game hype to me at least a 8/10, I preorder it and try it during the open beta, but unless something good comes out of it, might not pay the monthly fee for it. Thanks for reading, Axaiver Warping out.
Just not feeling it, it looks like its going to be a halfhearted attempt, that isn’t as capable or as engaging as its competition in the space based MMO category.
For space based MMO’s EVE Online is the standard; and i really don’t see Star Trek living up to it. sure customized external options is nice, but i think the only really new thing it has going is the ability to go to a planets surface; and i haven’t seen anything about that that wowed me (frankly it looks like a feature they tacked on).
And despite the hype there is a dearth of information. What about STO’s economy, will it be a sandbox (like EVE); or will it be developer controlled? will players be able to put up stations, gather resources, and produce useful goods for trade? if so what are the mechanics? can players claim territory? will their be a point to PVP if there isn’t a territorial claiming system? And is the camera locked into that damn tight in view (do we pilot the ship like a fighter or what? cause that’s what it looks like).
Really, as much as i love the franchise (well, except the abortions that were Voyager and Enterprise). I don’t think that STO is going to have anything to draw me to it over EVE Online. 5 man raids, really? In EVE you can run missions with 20 man fleets easily if you wanted too, hell 400 man PVP engagements are a regular occurrence when player alliances are at war.
I agree with you, in spite of the flaws I am REALLY looking forward to this. The Genesis Generator should make up for the lack of depths in other areas. I always love playing as the Klingons in Star Trek games, but if they do offer expansions for them then this will be a 10/10. If not and the exploration aspects are amazing, it’ll still be worth it.
I think that if you bring up the captain of another ship on screen you should be able to have your webcam broadcast to them, to actually have a face to face talk with the other captain. You could design your surrounding to look like your in a ship. They could even sell shirts to look like an authentic captain!
Joe, great video and i can see the potential in star trek online but i have few other worries about it.
First is will you be able to choose a a type of ship and stick with it till the end. What i mean is my favorite Star Trek ship class is the Akira-class, i always loved the desinge of the ship and i would love to command it. I hope that everyone can choose there own ship type and upgrade it, I relly hope that you not forced to always buy a better class ship if you dont want to. Becouse I am worried that at the end everybody will have a Sovereign-class ship and there will be no diversety. I hope you can upgrade every ship and if you upgrade it right i can be as powerfull as a Sovereign-class. So if a guy like me who wants to command Akira-class ship can also go on missions wiht Sovereign-class ships and be as powerfull as them. That is what I am moost conserend about.
Second is will the Space stations be like city’s that you can beam to or dock and walk around and buy, sell stuff and meet other players like the citys in WoW? Or you just get a booring display where you can buy sell things at you starbase.
And i also think the graphics dont look impressif. I know it is for that the people that dosent have a great PC but still i find some of the ship details little weak and the Phaser fire’s too flashy.
But in the end my biggest is my first point I just dont waqnt to see everyone forced to have the same class ship just becouse the other ones arent as powerfull and you cant upgrade or level your old ship up to par.
Sorry for my english..
I’m pretty sure someone else already wrote this but what the heck i say it too. Even tho SWTOR does not seem to have space combat right now i find it unlikely that they would cripple their game by taking out “star” and making it… Well Wars.
I guess they just hurry to make it so not all Sci-Fi fans go play Star Trek before The Old Republic comes out, they will probably make a “Jump to Lightspeed” kind of expansion soon enough.
I don’t want to defend it btw. I only say that no space combat shouldn’t count AGAINSt it since im pretty sure they will do a space expansion in atleast less than a year. With their company probably less.
I still can’t decide what will i play tho, so i guess i wait till i get in a beta.
Joe, that was an awesome video! I am with you on the STO hype, and I, like you, am a long time Star Trek fan of all the series and movies, so I am going to be straight on there as soon as open beta kicks off on Jan 12th.
Also, as soon as you publish details of your in-game fleet I’ll be looking to sign up, so hopefully I’ll catch you in game and we can go kick some Klingon ass in the neutral zone.
Wow Joe, it seems I’m in the other side of the mirror right here.
Because of the country I live, monthly paid games (most of the MMO’s) are a big big problem to play. For that matter, I’m almost always apathic about these games.
But I do have to say, this Star Trek MMO seems to have potential. But, about the spaceships battles, I won’t be counting on exciting battles, by what I experienced in my EVE Online first free 10 days, it was very VERY BORING…didn’t even felt like a point n’ click, it was so uninteractive and unexciting to explode other ships…Of course, Star Trek might not take the same course, but I don’t see how can they fit Spaceships battles on a MMO that will probably suffer from connection problems (that happens with EVERY MMO) into a action filled and overfluid system. They’re probably going to put it as a click, choose shoot, wait.
I’m sorry, but my hype on this one (ignoring that the fact that I’m unable to play it) is 0.
It’s bot Minus because I don’t think it’s going to suck hard dicks. But it’s not a Plus either because I think they’re trying to sell us half of what they will work on, and also because I was never a Star Trek fan.
i am no fan of star treck let me make that clear, but if i was, id be almost considering passing it, the lack of race and the seemingly repetitive gameplay could be a game breaker for me, and trust me, ive seen way to many crappy randomized map makers that only alter a few paths and place random crap around. I’m more interested in Star Wars the Old Republic, mainly because i know the previous games, they kicked major ass, im still gonna skip it though if i have to pay per month, that system is BS and does not belong. BTW you ever gonna do a review of Starcraft 2? It’s been majorly hyped and is set to hopefully come out 2nd quarter this year.
well it a mmo and putting in all what you want you have to have a high end system thay have to make it to where you can see it not lag all the time. This might not be the game for you if that what you want. And star trek is about star fleet all the show where about the fed
i am a big fan of star trek and i might get the game there is only one problum there is a monthly fee that not cool
Something that would be cool would have faction branches- the ability to choose an alien race in the Federation(which I know is in the game) but based on the alien, you follow a different story. Also, if you haven’t played Star Trek: Starfleet Command Vol. 2 you should really try that. It’s not an MMO but it does have monsters and ship bits do fly off.
1.5 races? Wasn’t there a trailer I saw of STO that showed off it’s “race creator” tool? Anyway, STO and MMO’s aren’t my cup of tea. After reading the above comments, I have to say though that the most insightful comment was: “If they rush this out and f&*$ it up, then the hardcore Trekkies will be REALLY pissed.” And I’m not just talking about the usual “this game sucks” oh no I’m talking about DEATH THREATS IN THE MAIL PISSED. I’m calling it now.
This is a game that my friends and I have spoken about back and forth a lot lately. Some of my friends are even a part of the closed beta right now, and they say that it’s a pretty good game, which is news that I’ve been hoping to hear as I’ve reserved the game myself. The only problems that they’ve mentioned are about the Klingons though and how they are being given the short end of the stick so far. As for the Genesis Engine, the best way to sum it up is like the engine on Borderlands that generates the weaponry. You never know what you’re going to run into on a new planet.
Actually Nova_neko all of those i know (including me) Just tested the game, so far i think Aion is ok but i dont know why NCsoft have two MMo games and also not many are avalible to play Aion Because it needs a 2.8GHz CPU which is alot for a simple MMo
I’m hyped for this also Joe i look forward to playing this with ya.
P.s. WIld wow is killing its self and a chuck of its player base ran off to Aion
Hmm , well i am not really that diehard of a Star Trek fan , i’m on the other camp but since it’s an mmo i can share my opinions .
First , as you said Joe , that dual gameplay better be polished or it will suck .
I am talking about different abilities both for your ship and for the captain , certain specializations that could benefit the captain or the ship or both .
The PVP better be intense and a bit more than waiting for a few shots being fired .
A MMO is all about exploring and leveling up , and since it is SPACE they better deliver as expected .
The races seem a bit limited but it isn’t a really big concern , speaking of whitch the captain could have a bonus of two from his race .
The graphics are really no reason to be concerned , these graphics kick the sh*t out of wow’s so i wouldn’t worry that much about the ship’s damage .
There better be some costumisation , you can’t put the ship in a big red shirt but there could be cool parts that enhance it’s atributes , as for the captain … well i don’t know … they might cite you for being out of uniform or something .
I can’t think at anymore things at this hour since i’m coming out of my n’th playthrough of the witcher .
When this game ships i will try the demo first ,they really need to have this , but i am sure that i am going to find STO just a good MMO.
I am almost sure that the other camp is going to be the superior MMO .
The force is strong in you Joe , strong enough to preview Star Wars The Old Republic .
Oh by the way , i forgot to mention , STAR WARS IS GOING TO BE THE DEATH OF WOW
In truth I am, like many of the people above stated, also a long termed MMORPG player and during the past 5-6 years, I have tried many, many of its genre. All from free Korean ones, to monthly free ones like Guild Wars to monthly paid ones like World of Warcraft. I can admit that World of Warcraft has been the one with the most time consuming but I once never said, when trying out an MMORPG: “Wow, this a WoW ripoff.” even if the creators try their best to create something unique and new. I always give an MMORPG a try and if I like it, I stick with it.
Now, Star Trek is a different thing. I may not be the hardcore Star Trek fan but I did enjoy the movies and even the TV-shows. But as long as there won’t any “zone restrictions” (meaning that, for example: Europeans and Americans can’t play on the same servers but I do doubt it will have one too), I will be pleased to join your Army, Admiral Joe! *Salutes*
EY wait a minute, WoW is not burned into my brain, I can enjoy alot of MMos but there aint any other then WoW that dose’nt suck balls, Even thou Blizzarde is well know of there perfect planning of games and waits just long enough to make there game the best seller of the year,
But the reason WoW is so popular is not because its the first in the genre but because its an amasing MMo, Its art style is just unique and no one can get it just as good, (even do i wish they stop makeing swamp countrys, Because they are just depressing and you just wanna skip it but you cant, But maybe they did that knowing Players will become more agitated to push forward, an create a kinda hero story in there mind that they will keep in the rest in the game…
Ok maybe WoW is burned in my mind but its in a good way cause it will force game creater to not just make a game for the money anymore, but for the gameexperience,
This probebly dosen’t make any sence for you people that did’nt play WoW or you pepole that just gave up on WoW and did’nt finsh the Fight.
If you guys start playing STO dont stop, push your self and it will get better after the glitches are fixed cause all games have problem in the start.
(My English is not the best in the world so there is probebly a lot of gramer problems in the text. (-.(-.(-.-).-).-) swedish gamers for the Win xD
What the true question should be is will this be popular enough, and good enough, to drag the core of MMO players away from WoW and into STO. I don’t see this happening. With Cataclysm coming out this year, and players still grinding to get the best gear, WoW is planning ahead with STO and SW:KoTR being released. I think while both have very big followings, WoW has burned into a lot of people’s brains how an MMO should work… I would say that unless STO or SW:KoTR do something that not only brings in their fans, but makes people take a second look at WoW, then it is going to be a long road for the two of them.
Wow became a long rant sorry
Well as a long termed MMo player so do i got some bad news for you guys,
But even how much i love Star Trek (Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner RULES)
So do i think that this game will probebly blow,
Ever since people started to invest in games, They have thought that you can make a game as fast as you can make a movie, YOU CAN NOT DO THAT!! You will just fail, Especially when its an MMo, it just will not work but they keep trying and they are destroying my entire childhood of games and movies, They ruined Warhammer, they obliterated Conan the Barbarian and THEY KILLED J.R.R TOLKIEN with the piece of shit Lord of the Rings Online (STOP THE FUCK PUTTING ONLINE ON THE END OF EVERYTHING AND THINK YOUR A GENIUS!)
The only people that at least care some times about you is Blizzard, Sure they take alot of your money for playing the game, I’ve played it since the beta version and its still orignal even do it have gotten to be to easy ever since Wrath of the Lich King came out, But it still is and will always be ten times better then any other MMo in the next decade to come,
So Fuck Turbine Entertainment fuck Funcom fuck Mythic Entertainment Fuck you NCsoft and Fuck you to Cryptic Studios, Stop rushing games and stop destroying my childhood Dreames (NCsoft Might not have rushed there game But Fuck’em Anyways)
Well said, however I will say that I stopped playing WoW in October after some reflecting on how easy instancing has got, and I am not interested in rehashing contents in hardmode and suppose to accept that as more content, and that instances have became a joke that can be cleared in 15 minutes.
I remember running through Stratholme at 60 clearing the baron 45 for the first time with just a group that was determined to accomplish, or running back into Shadowlabs heroic the first few times, or even randomly when someone is lagging later on and seeing respawns pop up was loads of fun. I remember just wanting to do heroics and 10 mans just because it was a blast talking to people when people have to take a break. 5s and 10s are more personal (and the crowd control was fun to do as well not running pulling everything and aoe it all although pallys could do that once geared enough
Give me 3x instances like those and I would be still playing it. 15 min runs are not even enough time to make a few connections in groups. I hope bioware learns from this mistake that WoW has made.
No matter how good this is, or Old Republic for that matter, WOW will stay the king of MMOs for a while. Too bad, since I don’t actually like WOW.
I really haven’t seen anything suggesting this will have a lot to do with Star Trek beyond what the ships and uniforms look like. Every single trailer is focused entirely on combat, which doesn’t really look that good. I’m not in the beta, but it looks like a much-simplified version of Starfleet Command going by the trailers. Even DS9 was as much about tricky diplomacy as it was straight conflict, and I hope the game reflects this focus.
This isn’t a discussion if it will be better then WoW, its if this game will suck. I have been a pretty big fan off MMOs for about 9 years from Ultima Online to Dark Age of Camelot to Star Wars Galaxies (Combat update and NGE SUCKS!), to World of Warcraft. I am not too hyped about this game. It has some interesting features and all, but overall when I see it or watch ingame trailers it really doesnt blow me away.
I will see how I like the beta, but usually my instincts are pretty dead on with bad mmos. I think SW:tor will be the one to watch with a company like Bioware behind it (who really hasnt yet disappointed me) A fallout MMO (I know interplay is doing one) would be interesting as well. Things I worry about for this game.
Is it a Clone of WoW in space?
Is it going to be one that draws you in at the start and keep you there like Warcraft, or sorta like Aion/conan/warhammer name 50 other mmos I could go down and becomes very grind centered after the initial zones.
You touched on this some but how much Lore will there be?
Is this game going to be closer to Ultima Online prior to the change where it is skill based, or will it be like every other game past that where it is gear based that defines how good you are?
These are questions I always ask on new MMOs, the same for Star Wars, but it gets a bit more points to start because like I said Bioware like Blizzard has a pretty good reputation on making pretty good games prior on trying to make an MMO.
what i think is gonna suck: to me it seems like all the star ships look alike. i dont like that.
what i think is gonna kick ass: The Genesis System. HELL yea.
Dude the ships dont all look the same. Thier is a huge amount of decals, diffrent saucers struts and nassels etc… alot of customization. Altough they look at a range the same once you get into firing range u will see a diffrence
The Old Republic interest me 10000000000X more than STO…
I’m not a Star Trek fan, simply because I have never seen an episode of Star Trek, I have only seen the latest movie (which kicked ass)
But damn you Joe, though I know little to nothing about Star Trek, youve hyped the game for me, and I’m planning to buy it since you’ve given me a lot of reasons why I would love it.
Also it should keep me occupied while I’m waiting for Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Thanks for the insight, Joe! I would offer a Rivalry with you, but alas I’m in EU and your in the USA, and I’m guessing theres going to be diferent servers for each region, damn! I would of loved to make a crumbling waste out of your ship.
Don’t worry, its going to be everyone on one server.
Now I haven´t seen THAT much of the game (how would I, there´s almost nothing to see yet except some leaked beta-footage – Bad Omen #1), but what I have seen gives me the impression that it could easily become a 2nd to 3rd-class MMO if the Devs aren´t very, very careful.
I for one am not a Star Trek Fan, I do like the shows a lot and I enjoy watching them when they´re on but I´m not a real Fan so I personally don´t care if the game sucks or not, I´d just play something else. But if I think about all the real fans who look forward to this…whoo boy the devs are in for on hell of a ****storm if they rush this game.
And that´s where I think you´re right, Joe. The game seems rushed to me.
I fear STO will have the same problem that so many other MMOs have: Lack of content and things to do. Sure, there´s the Genesis-System and all that, but MMO-Players are fast. Very fast. They burn through your content a lot quicker than you might anticipate, dear Devs. And they ain´t dumb. How many variables can this system have in terms of mission design? Or would ST-Fans be content to just run around on meaningles planets?
I don´t know, I hope the game will be good as there are too few good Sci-Fi-Games out there (yes, EVE is good, very good but you need too many people to be successful in that game).
Anyhow the video series is a nice idea, especially for MMOs…which reminds me what MMO I´m waiting for…The old Republic
Trust me Ill do one for SWTOR, and possibly a STO vs. SWTOR series!
Oh, dear, Joe… You screwed up my name again~ ^,^
I do know a few things about your concerns about the game, since I’m in the closed beta…
But, does anyone have a general grasp of how much I get to say about the closed beta, since I suck at reading that stuff? :’)
I hope I can say that so far, I’ve enjoyed the times I get to play it.
I personally think the pvp aspect will suck. As many publishers have proved before the key to a successful pvp mode is structure and with 30-40 ships flying round there is no structure.
The genesis sounds awesome, except it might just be a planet has a green skinned race and a bit of snow to make it different from the planet you last visited, and call my cynical but why would you want to go and see one of these pointless planets with your friends; its not like there is anything meaningful to do on them.
Just stick with freelancer! I love Star Trek and I think this game could turn out to be awesome, but there is no way I’m paying a monthly subscription fee for any game!
“I personally think the pvp aspect will suck. As many publishers have proved before the key to a successful pvp mode is structure and with 30-40 ships flying round there is no structure. ”
Not necessarily, EVE online has pvp battles in size of thousands, and it does it very well. STO is turning out to look like Star Wars Galaxies, which was a great game, but the devs murdered it.
I hope the space system is handled as well as it was in EVE.
The video isn’t there for me. What about anyone else?
Anywho…I am a huge Trek fan as well. Heck, I pre-ordered this game already. It better damn well not suck! I will be so angry! I was also concerned on how it’s coming out in such short time. How long ago was it announced? Not that long ago was it that Cryptic said they picked up the lisence I think. Then again they could have just been working on top of what was already there. I dunno.
I still have high hopes. I can’t wait to join your guild Joe.
I am really really really looking forward to this game. with about a month and a half away from its release, im getting a little worried. they have shown extremely little in terms of the klingons, however this may be to build suspence and an air of mystery. Heck they havent shown all the federation stuff either.
No doubt like you said they are planning for expansions, but if they can pull off the genesis system as well as combining all the diplomatic, combat, cultural messages, comradery, adventure, and sci fi tech aspects of the series, then they will hands down own all. However, that is a tall order, and it is something we will have to wait and see as to if they pull it off
