Marine campaign is too scary
but predator and alien is fun to play as but gets repetative in campaign

So I’ve been playing this all day or trying to and I am liking the gameplay and have started owning with the marine it’s just the damn menus that are horrible for the PC. It feels like a console port to me. It’s got that damn quick match where you can’t really pick a server or who to play with it just puts random people in with you which I’ve always hated. And you cant join a game in progress either. I sat for like 20 minutes mid day today just waiting for people today and that sucked. If I could see there were all empty servers then I could just stop and try to play later not just wait for however long to hope someone joins.

And as other people have said before me the open mic is the most annoying thing ever for PC. Every time without fail someone has a mic and no headphones and it’s just the most annoying static sound you will ever hear. I yell cover your mic and stuff like that and I hear back people talking in what seems like Chinese? whatever. Also the loading times are pretty bad. You just hear that damn static forever and half the people leave before the game even loads. I think this is gonna fail for the PC if you ask me. The gameplay is fun but the menu and open mic is shit for PC.

Hmm, the coop mode is not new.
AvP 1 had Preds and Marines against a neverending torrent of Aliens. And not only 4 guys.
(Best mode evar!)

But then those were the good, old PC times.

It looks pretty good but I think what will really make or break the game is if they can get the atmosphere right without unbalancing the game. As you said, the marines having their motion tracker bleeps but not knowing what is coming or from where exactly… that is the stuff. But if its not perfectly balanced the Marines will either become annoyed like Hell because they almost never get the alien before it gets them or they have it too easy and it becomes a slaughter. And then they have to balance it for three sides, well we will see.

Anyway if you look forward to AvP you should check out the excellent Half-Life 1 mod Natural Selection and its upcoming successor and stand-alone game Natural Selection 2 by Unknownworlds Entertainment.

Its a very inventive game, a hybrid between RTS and FPS where the Marines fight the aliens while both sides try to build up their bases to gain the upper hand (Marines through better technology, Aliens through controlled Evolution). Both sides play completely different but its still balanced pretty good and the different alien forms are very cool to play. The basic form is kinda like the AvP alien, very fast and can also run on walls and ceilings, then there is a flying form and more. Check it out.

I kinda agree…but the demo got really frustrating for me. Sure, the Grab kills are a nice touch….but that’s the MAIN cause of death in MP….which then you have to watch the animation EVERY TIME. Sometimes, I would even spawn, only to instantly get grabbed from behind, no chance of countering, and having to watch the same animation play out all over again. It’s really hard to say, “I want this game” when I’ve pretty much experienced all the online will have to offer….getting grabbed over….and over….and over again.

For me…the balance is also a major issue. The Alien has the fastest attack, meaning it can land a heavy strike, stun you, and grab you for the kill, leaving you no possible way to defend yourself. It seems that the Predator is mainly for killing Marines, Aliens are for killing Predators, and Marines are for killing Aliens…which really causes a major issue with class selection. Most of the time, I joined a match, and got stuck with Predator…which means I had to spend most of the matches running from Aliens, so I could kill Marines. Sure, not everything is supposed to be easy, but if you don’t have any weapons with the Predator, besides the default blades, all the Alien players have to do is stick to ceilings and tail whip.

This is strictly my opinion on the demo….but I know they aren’t going to bother doing anything else to the game, between now and release. We basically have the finished project…and I’m kind upset that this is what we’re getting. I know the Alien is going to be deemed overpowered and everyone will want to play as one, simply because the Marine and Predator weapons simply don’t pose a massive threat. All the Aliens have to do is get in close in order to kill you with a 2 button combo from the front and a 1 button insta-kill from the back. It’s Gears of War 2 all over again with the Chainsaw and Two-Piece. ….That’s not fun gaming for me.

I think there’s bound to be more emphasis on the story.
It’s become a more important game element these days than it was in 1999, and for that matter I know that Lance Henriksen has given his voice and likeness to the single player story mode. *AS* the CEO of Weyland-Yutani.
Some of the modifications they’ve made to the PC version (if the multiplayer demo released on Steam is any indication) bother me, but I’m pretty confident the single player will entertain thoroughly.

That was hilarious!! You *have* to have been in a college dorm to get that Shower-scene joke. That’s like the only place I remember when flushing the toilet did that. Plus, the little skit at the beginning was plain awesome as well.

I actually loved the AVP games on the PC. The first one, especially when you play as the Col. Marine, was scarier than pretty much any survival horror, at the time. The emergency lighting, the various broken pipes that could hiss like an alien, the way your vision felt less than optimal with the lights pulsing between almost out and full red brightness. You didn’t just feel like something scary is around the corner. You felt like you just knew you’re going to die in a most horrible fashion, but you simply didn’t know when it will happen.

Of course, playing the alien was also cool but could be disorienting for players due to all the surfaces you could stick to. (Not to mention, your ability to jump 2-3 stories high)

But enough about that. I’ll be curious as to how this will stack up to the previous PC offerings. It could be something special if it expands or exceeds what they did.

Where is that Alien shower scene from?

I remember getting AVP when I bought my creative sound system years ago and played it on the original Radeon so the graphics and sound were fantastic for their time and to this day I still remember playing as a marine with just a smart gun and plasma rifle, my health in the red and crawling through ventilation shafts looking for a sve point while hearing the motion sensor clicking and seeing the occasional blip, I was bloody crapping myself…I mentally could not complete the level because the atmosphere was so dense. If this is anything like that I’ll be happy…and scared.
