Being a huge fan of Creatively Assembly and the Total War Franchise I’m really pulling for this game. I hope that it offers exactly what the developers have promised this time around – so that we can all quickly forget the disappointment suffered from Empire.

What’s so bad about Empire? I didn’t play the game until three weeks ago when it was on sale on steam, but all updates loaded in automatically and the game kicked ass. Naval battle, huge campaign… just beautiful.
Now I don’t know what to expect. A game only focusing on Europe? Only over a limited amount of time. WTF?! I want to dominate the world, not play an outlined strategy game, battle for battle.
And what’s with the so called “updates”? Same era, same type of battles – 322 “new” units. Line infantry will always be Line Infantry. Same crap.
This should have beeen an expansion and nothing else.

Did you know that you can actually “unlock” a multiplayer Campaign in Medieval 2 – Total War? Just with some changed settings within some config.ini files. Some years ago I googled that and found that trick…
The joke is that this mode seems to be already implemented in M2-TW, but just not unlocked. What the hell?
To the review, after the failure of E-TW, I will certainly wait if, after the release of N-TW, the mistakes of the past are done again or not…

Great review. Too bad that Shireknight Guy over at the TW forums is such a forum Nazi, he shut down your review again.
This review is probably one of the BEST things that could have happened for CA and NTW, and some Gestapo agent(Mr Shireknight) over at the Yuku forums goes and locks it, claiming “profanity use”. It WAS EDITED, and the profanities were blipped out. You here the EXACT same type blips on daytime radio and TV. That guy just removes anything and EVERYTHING that could reflect negatively on CA. What’s funny is the fact that you’re actually talking UP CA more than your critisizing.
It’s great how you NAILED the fact that Empire is STILL broken, but that players should have hope for Napoleon. Empire was UNFORGIVEABLE in my book, hell, the debacle is 11 months after release and STILL ONGOING. I’ll not even think of paying for NTW. You’re review/preview does make it tempting though.

I do enjoy your level-headness in these videos Joe, and the news about the separate campaigns and better generals makes this game sound the RTS I’ve been waiting for.

Empire: total war, yeah it has its issues, but its a whole lifetime of RTS bundled into 1 game, and that makes it 1 of the greatest RTS games of all time, it has all the wants of an RTS gamer and MORE!

Well for starters I would suggest 2 total war games:
.
-Shogun: Total War – the first one and by some presumed THE BEST TW game
-Rome: Total War – it’s the third in the series and the first one to actually employ (finger quotes) 3d (finger quotes) champaign map. I think it’s the best one out since I finished it like 4 times on highest diff
They are both better than Empire and they shouldn’t be priced high now (I think rome is available on steam now… not sure though ;P)
First medieval is quite a lot of fun too.

You know, the biggest selling point of this game seems to be that the patches will be included in it. Outside of that, I’m holding off on this one until I hear Joe’s review.

No game released 1 year after its predecessor can be high quality stuff. Lots of talk about features but what really matters in a game is how smooth it runs and how right it feels in your hands. Also with starcraft 2 beta starting this month, i wouldn’t buy an RTS game

I thnik we are so good in argumenting about bugs becouse our german game studios developers have prooven that not everything made in germany is quality ^.^
Yeah its running now again but I think a better betatesting would be nice…
Sacred 2 (PC) for expamle was only playable for me after the 4th patch just to crash the game again with the addon

Oh my You just reminded me of all the games in Gothic series xD (especially the third one). And for the more recent ones… damn I can’t remember the name… The one with dragon hunter turning into dragon ;P.

For me, the Best RTS was StarCraft, and sense then, i really havent had much fun with them.
But who knows, maybe this game will kick ass.

I thought Empire was totally worth what I paid for it. Mind you, that was ten bucks at a Steam sale. I’m surprised you didn’t say anything about the DLC special units (of which there are a half dozen packs), I haven’t used them but it sounds like a complete rip-off.
I was amazed how many people seemed downright offended at the part of the trailer where Napolean said he won in Russia. He didn’t destroy the HMS Victory either; it’s an alternate history game, just like the entire series.

I don’t have any prepared opinion on the game.
That’s because I’m a kind of person that does his best NOT to be caught in any hype (or anti-hype for all that matters) since this kind of thing might actually hurt your gameplay experience. For example I remember the last game I got extremely hyped on was Spore (DAMN YOU MAXIS!) and it was such a HUGE disappointment over what I hoped it to be.
Thus because I didn’t play Napoleon yet, and I will buy it as I do with each and every Creative Assembly game (well maybe except Stormrise… but I guess it wasn’t a big miss ;P), I can’t really judge it. From the trailers, interviews and previews it seems like it will be empire with some big fixes. And that’s OK with me. Well all see how it works when it comes out.
PS. I was actually one of the few persons that didn’t have all that trouble with Empire
but hell maybe I was just lucky… naval battles still suck though…

Another massive disappointment for me was COD Modern Warfare 2. So many problems from glitchers, hackers, and cheaters, it really sank the game for me. Right on the money with ETW Joe good review.

I was never played RTS untill i bought Empire: total war. AND I LOVE IT! it is worth the buy, especially because right now it is 65 percent off on steam, untill monday.
Overall it is a very good game, but can get a bit linear, and the multiplayer is extremly laggy (IMO).
