Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) Movie Review

Short Version: A pointless cash-grab remake that goes through the motions paying homage to the original but adding nothing of its own, aside from a “darker tone”. Gee how original. In just a few months no one will remember this film, just the superior original classic. It’s only saving grace is Jackie Earle Haley performance despite the material given to him.
What you’ll Like:
• Jackie Earle Haley is an excellent successor to Robert Englund as Freddy.
• Freddy is More Evil and more Disturbing but lacks the same “Charm”.
• The Last 5 Seconds of the Movie. (more FX like this please)
• The upset look on my lady friends face next to me when the “Twilight” kid dies at the beginning.
What you’ll Hate:
• Freddy’s New Face is Terrible.
• The New Nancy isn’t as resourceful and strong as the original Nancy.
• If the intent was to make the movie more visceral and scary by removing the camp and charm it failed.
• A Boring, Uninspired waste of an Iconic Horror Villain – what was the point? Just $$$.
Final Verdict:
5/10
Average
(But a Disappointment in my eyes because i’m a Huge Fan of Freddy)

I think I need to watch the original Nightmare on Elmstreet now, or else I won’t take Freddy serious anymore T_T
Isn’t it sad that they ARE actually making a re-make of Child’s Play and Hellraiser.
Re-boots and re-makes, thats all tha awaits us…..
And when you consider how Hellraiser: Revelations was…I do not have any expectations for a remake…like with Robert Englund, they’d need to find someone really good and able to pull off the role to be able to replace Doug Bradley as Pinhead.
The original Freddy’s face looked like a pizza. But this one looks like a melted clay model of a fish.
Truth be told, though I shouldn’t be one to jump to conclusions, the moment I caught a glimpse of the new face, I was almost immediately put off by it. Later on did I see that I was right in my assumption that the movie was indeed a disappointment when compared to the old classics. Luckily, I didn’t have to pay to see the new one. Yay… I think.
they just keep remaking and remaking filmmakers are getting very desperate
OMG. The look on his face with the jump scares are so funny. Oh yeah this movie sucks more than a vacuum on high.
As someone who hates scary movies because of the panic they usually give me, I have to say this one completely failed! This new Freddy is not the least bit intimidating, the ”Vanilla Sky” face and ”Dark Knight” voice were lame (if ypu haven’t seen these watch them and you’ll know what I’m talking about!). The story made no sense either. It’s a nightmare on Elm street because that’s where Freddy lived. He wasn’t a gardener at the kids school, he didn’t personally know them at all. I like that the story was a little darker, bringing out the truth of him being a molester, but that’s all that WAS dark! In a time where you can push the envelope as much as you want I thought it could’ve been a lot scarier and disturbing. This new Freddy was a tiny little poindexter! Can’t top Robert Englund’s look, voice, and presence. And what about the special effects such as his arms growing longer or toungue coming out of his mouth? That’s the stuff that freaked me out as a child, add some of that with a scarier spin on it! Very disappointing. Where is Rob Zombie on this one?!
REMAKE SUCKED! They will never out do Robert Englund. He is Freddy fucking Krueger!!! They just keep doing stupid remakes wich are boring as F*CK!! A nightmare on elm street didn’t need a remake. BULLSHIT!BULLSHIT
Well, i loved the Texas chainsaw massacre remake, but i hated the friday the 13th remake. and the new nightmare on elmstreet remake isnt nearly as good as the first, but i did enjoy it oddly.. i loved jackie as Freddy.. not as much as Robert mind you, but he was still really good.. his face.. the only part of his face i HATED was the one eye, it looked fucked up. but i dont agree with you about how he doesnt look like a burn victim. he looks like the burn victims that SURVIVED the burnings… which makes no sense. they should have looked at burn victims corpses! the people who DIED in the fire, or FROM the fire. from shock.. after being burnt.. those people. who dies of shock are the ones they should have went for, he clearly runs out of the building on fire. that means he dies right after catching on fire from shock, he didnt linger on for months before death. now if he had lingered on for years, then shot himself i could have TOTALLY seen him looking like he did. but we are to believe his SOUL had to heal up from the burns? hahahaha. no. but as far as actual burn victims yeah, he looks like an actual HEALING burn victim. which is stupid. (given the context i mean) also, you paid 11 bucks for your ticket, i paid nothing to watch it online when it first came out, then i paid 1 DOLLAR for the DVD on amazon hahaha… i guess i like this movie a bit more cause i paid damn near nothing for it..id buy that for a dollar!
Freddy in this movie looks more like a very disappointing reveal of The Fury’s face.
This is still great to point out just how terrible the movie really was..
But I do have to wonder if Joe’s seen the pieces of garbage Hellraiser put out with everything after the 1st one.. It’s at freaking 9 with no signs of stopping the 2-4 (out of 10) rated movies.
Although with Child’s Play I can appreciate the comedic and goofy sequels since they where trying to be over the top ridiculous and keep Chucky every bit the same character he showed himself to be.
dude how about this I don’t even watch horror’s and I watched the old fred dog the stuff man if you liek horrors chunky actually funny more than anything along with leperchaun the funniest when I was coming up dont know the other two but that sucks man
I actually liked this movie. A little. ok ASPECTS of the movie. But seriously, the CGI guys did their homework and made Freddy look like a real burn victim. How can people be mad that they did their homework? If Joe thinks he looks fucked up, then they failed majorly.
And I was pissed that Freddy lost his charm. One of the reasons why Freddy is one of my favorite movie baddies is because of his….Charisma? Is that it? Well he had charm yet he was creepy as HELL in the original.
I think there’s one scene we will ALL remember: when Freddy has Nancy tied to the bed by his…Invisible bonds and tells her how he MOLESTED HER AS A CHILD. THAT moment to me, was what I personally call a “HOLY SHIT MOMENT!” Like…REALLY movie? You’re…You’re gonna throw THAT shit at us? Jesus. Oh and the way Nancy’s mom dies in this one is TEN TIMES better than the original.
I also remember thinking “It’s about freaking time Freddy!” When he slashed he claws down Kris’ torso. That was kinda cool to watch. I also laughed at a few of Freddy’s one liners such as “Fuck you!” “Sounds like fun!” That kinda sounds like something Freddy would say as a comeback to that. Another good one was after “Oh God!” “No, just me!” I thought those were good.
I give it a 6.5/10. A little higher than Joe’s rating. Mainly because Haley was a KICKASS Freddy, but it’s not enough to save the movie. Oh and Joe forgot to mention that Dunes was gonna come and ruin Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as well. And Michael FUCKING Bay was gonna help. Fuckin’ Bay…
I agree dude.
Also I was playing “A Night on Bald Mountain” while watching this, it gave the review atmosphere so fitting it made me laugh.
Wait? the Epic insane Rosrcah is Freddy? wow he looks terrible in this watchmen was so much better
i thought it was an ok film but not the original
Pure crap, just watched it and turned the movie off half way through!!!!
this film sucks major monkey balls avoid it.
BLah!!!!

homo
THANK YOU FOR RANTING THIS, I FELT THE SAME WAY, FUCK THIS MOVIE, THIS PIECE OF SHIT DISGUST TOWARDS THE ORIGINAL SERIES! THIS IS A ABOMINATION! IT SHOULD BE BANNED! I would love to see the original freddy see the new freddy…
FUCK, THIS MOVE SUCKS!!!!
i haven’t seen the Nightmare On Elms Street series but what hollywood are doing is shitting on every single one of old horror remakes
Great review Joe (as always), but you were TOO KIND to this messy peace of shit.
This movie made me pissed off….I love the original movies too much to let the problems of this movie to slide
Wow. Wow. Wow. I swear YOU stated exactly what I was thinking. Thank goodness I waited until this movie was available on DVD at my local library for the low cost of 0.50 cents per night. Needless to say I only got to the part where the “new” Nancy was about to fall asleep in the bathtub. I just could NOT ingest anymore bad acting and the horror of wasting my time watching this pathetic new version. Your comments about the “twilight” kids were true but so funny! Katie Cassidy a/k/a Kris had tons of bags under her eyes and makeup only highlighted them instead of hiding them. Heck this chic looked OLDER than her on-screen MOM! To any and all ignore the FAKE reviews on IMDb. This movie truly SUCKED!
This movie was painful, it was really painful. I actually wrote a review of this on my website, it will soon be a video review because I’m doing the whole Nightmare and Elmstreet series this month. The thing that really bugged me about this remake was the fact that they did what every other remake has been doing and that is adding a backstory to the killer. What’s even worse is that they make these stories sympathetic, to where they want you to feel bad for the killer and that is just stupid. One of the things that made the original Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elmstreet good was the fact that there was a certain mystery to these characters. While the original Elmstreet did reveal Freddy’s past a bit, there still was a lot of questions on why he showed up in these kids nightmares. These remakes takes a lot of these mysteries away and it ends up ruining the effect that the killer has in the movie.
dude i fucking hate jumper monments one or two is ok but a billion of them
ansome review, i would give the movie a 3/10.
Awesome review, I agree in every way.
(What band is the end song?)
lol you wanted to say nothing in german and said “nein”. Its “nichts”, “nein” just means no. Anyway, funny fucking review.
I thought this one of the better remakes. After seeing Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th, i lost all hope for this movie. But i enjoyed it very much. The only things that hold it down are bad acting from Roni Mara and Thomas Dekker. Plus the whole jump scare after jump scare. For me its a 9/10
there making a stephen king’s IT remake.
I personally hate slasher films. Cutting someone up and showing all the blood and gore isn’t real horror. That’s why I made this handy questionarre.
How to determine a good horror film:
1. Is it Evil Dead? (If yes, WIN!; If no, next question)
2. Is it a remake? (If yes, FAIL!; If no, next question)
3. Is it part of a popular but deteriorating franchise? (If yes, next question; If no, skip)
4. Is it the first or second movie in the series? (If yes, next question; If no, FAIL!)
5. Is it based off a video game? (If yes, FAIL!; If no, next question)
6. Does it feature (1) an all-star cast or (2) relative unknown’s? (If 1, next question; If 2, skip)
7. (1) Are they actually acting or (2) is it mostly cameos? (If 1, next; If 2, it better have a good story)
8. Does the main character annoy you? (If yes, next question; If no, skip)
9. Is he/she (1) an idiot or (2) do you just hate his/her guts? (If 1, FAIL!; If 2, continue)
10. Does it have a good villain/monster? (If yes, skip; If no, next question)
11. Is it retarded/CGI or do you just hate it because you’re supposed to? (If yes, FAIL!, If no, WIN!)
12. Are there moments of insanity/horror on a psychological level? (If yes, continue; If no skip)
13. Do they mesh with the story well and aren’t just big-lipped alligator moments? (If yes, WIN!; If no, next question)
14. Did it make it to the end with 2 FAILS! or less?
With one FAIL! the film is going to be a classic.
With two FAILS!, it’s a must-see, and may become a cult-hit.
Any more than that, it’s not worth your time.
I disliked this movie so much. It was terribly boring…Jackie was ok. AND ROONEY MARA WAS TERRIBLE. She was NOT fit to wear the name NANCY. Even if they did change the last name…she was terrible. The original will always be my favorite…Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp forever <3
If platinum Dunes remakes Jak Frost the better make it great or i’m gonna raise hell!
a nightmare on elmstreet remake was ok but they left soooooooooooooooooo much of the good stuff, and the way Platinum dunes is going is almost exactly like well EA! In may perspective.
it was ok. i was hopeing for a little more but overall the movie was just ok. i put it in the middle on my scale of best to worst in the series.

Awesome review Joe… I kinda agree with you but I am not as pissed off with it as you were. Look at my review here and you will see what I mean.
The nightmare on elm street 2010 was good I liked it but Robert England will always be the best. The Friday the 13th 2009 SUCKED! I hated it! And I am a huge fan! Jason does not hold people in chains he just kills! I hated that part in the movie. The new Halloween movies are okay but I was not crazy about them. Stop trying to remake classic films. Leave them alone.
hollywood messes everything up they ruined my faveourite board game of all time battleship honestly how the hell do you get aliens from battleship
On Wikipedia it said the make-up crew and CG people tried to make him look like MORE of a burn victim. If Joe thinks he looks like less of one, major failure on their part.
I HAVE YET TO SEE THE NEW NIGHTMARE HOWEVER I LOVE THE NEW TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRES AND THE NEW FRIDAY THE 13TH WASN’T HALF BAD AND THE NEW HALLOWEENS ARE DOPE! NOTHING EVER COMPARES TO THE ORIGINAL HOWEVER IN SOME OF THESE CASES I THINK THEY DID AN AWESOME JOB! I WILL HOLD MY OPINION ON THE NEW FREDDY TILL I SEE HIM IN ACTION BUT I THINK THAT EVEN THOUGH NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE ORIGINALS THEY ARE TRYING TO REACH A NEW AUDIENCE AND CASH IN! SOMETIMES IT’S GOOD, SOMETIMES IT’S NOT! BUT SO MUCH CAN BE SAID FOR TECHNOLOGY…… MAKING SHIT LOOK MORE REAL AND BLOOD MORE GORY….. I SAY HELL YEAH! I’M OLDSCHOOL SO I WILL ALWAYS LOVE THE CLASSICS BUT IN SOME CASES THE NEW ONES ARE BETTER!
FIGMENT
I have to say that the only reason Halloween remakes work is because they had a great director who gave it an edge that made it more intense. I will never ever ever see another horror remake by Michael Bay! He ruins everything! Leave well enough alone unless you can put an interesting spin on it.
Are you kidding me? Rob Zombie, no offense to the guy, is a shit director. He uses so much shakey cam, and so much damn over the top, digusting characters, that his movies, all of them, even The Devils Rejects, can be called sub-par at best. His movies have camp value, but that doesn’t make the awful characters justifiable.
I don’t know if I should see it! What do you think?
if you like jackie, like i do, you should see Watchmen joe, SUPERB PERFORMANCE
