Red Dead Redemption Review
The Short Version: Red Dead Redemption earns every bit of its distinction as our first “10/10″ game. Not only is it easily the best western video game of all time but its also the definitive sandbox experience. • Extremely High Production Values, Graphics, Voice Acting and Storyline.
• Near Flawless Animations (Especially for the Horses)
• Some of the Side Missions are really intriguing.
• Great Variety of Locations (I was worried by its 1910 setting, but I was wrong – its a strength!)
• Dragging people by Lasso through town.
• Each mini-game is incredibly fun and extremely thematic.
• 16-Player Co-operative Free Roam.
What you’ll Hate:
• Game suffers from the occasional glitches and bugs. (but they are funny!)
• Why cant we play the damn mini-games in Multiplayer? (Poker, Blackjack, Liars Dice, Arm Wrestling, etc.)

Well I got the PS3 verison of RDR , the speial edition when it came out, and I have to agree, it is worth every pennie. Hehe on Multiplayer I have like a 1.2 K bounty on my head and players are even looking for me (I was in a spot where I could not run from the law to I shoot my way out, kill 16 lawmen) Draw back, missing NPC’s, PCs, Horse, and stage coachs, they are missing completely, but you can see the dust, even you can go missing. (Might be a loading issue) other then that, it is still a awesome game.
ok i just got it for the PS3 and it came with a free download for a “war horse”………does the come with all of them or did i just get uber lucky?

Very nice show dude. Love the game and I agree that everyone who eather has a passion for western, freeroaming games or good games in general have to buy this one.

sorry Lord Joe, but i am kinda under 18, and by birthday is in may so…. yeah. but i will put that on my list of stuff to get when i am 18. by the way, have you heard anything about the new transformers game: Transformers War for Cybertron. it comes out in June i think. It looks and sounds like a very big next-gen game. have you given it any thought?
The only reason I got this game was because of the five reasons, then when I did get it (a day early as well) I was hoping to see Joe come up with as positive as a review I hoped. This game kicks ass!
The beginning of the video made me think “whoa it’s the battle of the 5 o’clock shadows!” The glitch is hilarious especially with the song added in. ^_^
I’ve got a question regarding your 10/10 mark because I know you work differently to most other reviewers. In a hypothetical situation where Rockstar released a sequel that was exactly the same, same graphics, same mechanics, same everything, apart from the story which was equally good and then they added multiplayer poker on top, not black jack, not five finger fillet, just poker. Would this sequel be a 10/10 because it was better, even if just marginally than the original or would it rank lower because it didn’t do enough to differentiate from its precursor?
In essence for a series to gain back to back 10/10s would the sequel just have to be the same/marginally better or would it need to be something more than just an improvement/update and will it need to bring big innovation to the table?
I think your reading into the whole 10/10 thing a little too much.
I doubt he’d give something like that 10/10 since that sounds like a DLC in the same way Left4Dead 2 shouldn’t have been it’s own game.

Nice vid Joe. I think the thing that really seperates this game from other open world shooters is the fact that there are so many animals. The wilderness is not just a big empy space but an actually has animals that will hunt you unless you hunt them first.

I cannot wait to play this game. I’ve been anticipating it for such a long time. I’ve wanted a good western game for so long. One where I can be a spaghetti western outlaw. That game has arrived, and I’m going to play the hell out of it. Joe gave a 10/10! He is the voice of the gaming gods, they want all to play Red Dead Redemption!

Will have to disagree on this one, I quite liked the ending, it was different and surprising.
I dont think he talked about the ending, he meant actually finnishing the game and realize this great experience is over…until you play it again that is.
I bought this game on the day and i have to say it is one of the best games i have ever played. Thoroughly deserves the 10/10!

hm, but… i have a problem with critics giving out their highest verdict/result. i’m damn sure it’s a epic unique game and it’s a game i will pick up and play but it should be a 9/10 or a 9.5/10 only. why? because the 10/10 should be very very hard to reach, near to impossible, reserved for THE perfect game.
and RDR is not perfect.
and i think there will be a version for pc.

I mostly agree with you Joe, but personally have 2 complain that hitch me a bit on the game…
First the mini game… I hate them, they are no fun, and i too hard to do, like the “iron horse trowing thing” (no clue how to translate that in english seriously) I never even got close to suceed that one…
Secound… i feel like there is no reason at all to play a bad guy, yes the game let you do so… but i feel like the game will only punish you for doing so and dont let you have any advantage from it… Maybe i’m mistaken but that’s the feeling i got

Beside that this game easily deserves the 10. I own the limited edition on ps3 and haven’t been dissapointed so far (except a nice glitch where i was riding under the surface straight in a mountain ^^ looked weird) Follow the order of your commander Joe and buy this game!!

Why exactly? Would you review Uncharted 2 and say it damn near perfect but its not on the Xbox 360 so I’m going to drop it two points? Are you going to drop it another two points because its not on the Wii? Do the DS and PSP count as two points or a point each? Are we also going to count in the iPhone and iPad? Are they one or two points and do we count those as separate entities or just deduct the points once and treat it as the same platform?
If we extend you thinking its either a best case scenario of 5/10 or worst case scenario of -2/10 because it was only released on the Xbox360 and PS3.
It doesn’t matter what platform it isn’t released on, it can only be scored against what platform it IS released on. Marking a game down because it isn’t released on your platform of choice is the critic’s equivalent of “I’m taking my ball and going home”.
7/10 because there’s no Wii version

Red Dead is a great game, first time I’ve ever gone out first day & bought a game full price. I even pre ordered it. Worth the 50€. Really Love the story, I’m still doing the Mexican revolution missions at the minute. The 1911 setting works really well I’ve moved on to the early 20th century weapons like the mauser pistol & the bolt action rifle. I love the combat, the aim assist works a lot better than the auto lock in the GTA games. The melee combat could be a little better & I’d like if they’d added some other melee weapons like tomahawks or even bow & arrows for missions that require stealth. There’s the odd visual glitch as well, whenever I skin an animal near a bushes my hand ghosts through & some of the random encounters repeat more than the others. I’ve stopped the horse thief about twenty times. My game froze twice which was annoying but that problem seems to have sorted itself out. As I said the 1st time I commented no Xbox LIve, so no multiplayer, but looking at the free roam option, this game is making me consider changing that. In spite of not getting the multiplayer I’d say this game deserves it’s ten & I hope it’s a huge success.
Oh c’mon Joe don’t put the final score before the video, i don’t like spoiling it before the video, i’d rather be suprised during the video instead.

I agree that this game is fun and addicting, but Multiplayer really didn’t turn out well. With the population reduced to almost nothing and the minigames removed, Multiplayer’s Free Roam just doesn’t shine as well as they advertised.
I’d prefer to give the game 9/10. It does almost everything right. Just add more NPCs to Free Roam and the minigames as well, then I’ll give the game a 10/10.
Or, at the very least, R* should explain why the population was reduced so much.
Cons: you cant swim!!!!! WAH? a minor gripe, but it really bothered me for some reason. I guess everything else was done so well, that you take note of those kind of details.

OK enough praise, lets get to the game. And hell it is a lot of fun. I had the fear that I hyped myself too much for this game (Watching westerns, listinging to westernsoundtracks, even played Call of Juarez again) BUT it lifed to its Hype and I am so glad it did.
Like you say it starts slow and it becomes this huuuuuuuuge game. Great story, Great Voiceacting, Great Athmosphere. The Main Story alone is worth every Cent I invested, but you can get easily sidetracked with all the other side missions, poker, blackjack, arm wrestling, horse braking, five finger falletingnggngng (jesus what a word^^), Liars Dice, catching bandits, helping damsels in distress, hunting huge fricking bears, etc., etc., etc.
It is also really funny, that in GTA, does not matter which one, I always try to get from point A to point B as fast as possible, I feel the driving around is really dragging, even if the ciry looks really cool in GTA IV for example. But in RDR I really like to get on a horse and just galopping through the scenery, i rarely use the fast travel option.
What should get a mentioning are the random events that happen all the time. My first one was kinda shocking. I heard a woman screaming, it seems she belonged to the local whorehouse, her client seemed upset and screamed at her and throw her to the ground. I did not decided yet if I wanted to be a good guy or a bad guy so I just watched, I thought he is gonna beat her up or rape her. Then he pulled out a huge knife and stabbed that poor gal a few times. From there on I started to be a John Wayne type, helping everything always doing the right thing. Next Playthrough I will be a bad guy, but I will still shot those motherfuckers right in the face, thats not how to treat woman, even if I am a complete asshole.
You really grow attached to John Marston and I do not want to spoil anything, but I got really sad at the end, I tried 4 times to change it but it seems impossible. I did not had this feeling of emptiness after I completed a game in a long time and it sounds kinda silly but it is really emotional.
What I can spoil is my favorite scene, besides the ending. It starts right after you arrive in Mexico. You get on your horse, ready to ride to the next possible place of your Friend Bill. It will go uphill over a cliff, and then this really cheesy music starts to play. I was just riding along with this song in the background also I got goosebumps. Epic Five minutes
Well this game deserves your 10/10 rating. This game is so worth its money. Hell I never liked poker and this game got me interested in it, at least texas hold em

joe i appreciate your input but the fact is this game is dull. most of the activities in this game are decent diversions but the main story missions are repetitive and uninteresting with the exception of the card game leading into the quick draw duel.a lot of the missions become nothing more than ride for hours on end shoot some guys rinse and repeat and when i played online their was next to no one playing.also the glitches i encountered weren’t funny my game locked up twice and the autosave gliched sending me back to the beginning of the game I SHIT YOU NOT.all and all it was an average game for western fans nothing more.

Wow this game does look really awesome! I only wish I have the money to buy it though. I used all my old games already to trade-in towards Naughty Bear. Actually, are you thinking of ever reviewing or previewing Naughty Bear? It’s this crazy XBox 306/PS3 game that’s like a like a twisted cross between the Care Bears (MINUS the god awful cuteness) and a slasher flick. I think it’s worth a look, even if it seems like it’s going under the radar.
