PowerGig Interview w/ Lt.Lisa Foiles
Lt.Lisa Foiles Gets the details on what separates Powergig from the sea of plastic guitar games. Can Powergig actually Teach you how to play music?
Wait What? Lisa Plays Bass Guitar? Friggin’ awesome!
But what do you guys think? Is PowerGig just one music game too many? Do you think there’s room for it and its real electric guitar?
And have you seen its “Air Drums” I cant possibly understand how these would work right!

This game looks hyyyyyyyyype.

I have to say, personally, that I had some interest in this game, until Harmonix introduced the Pro controllers for RB3. Not particularly excited about this one, anymore, especially with the “air drums”. I may only be an Easy/Med drummer on Rock Band, but the feedback and rebound from hitting the pads instead of a space of air just makes it feel more authentic, regardless of if it actually is or not. Still, looks interesting, but either way, I’ll wait for reviews and set lists to see which way I’m going to be leaning, although I’m going to admit that I’m biased, having played Harmonix stuff since Frequency.

Lisa is pleasing to the eye but she really isnt good at interviews she showed personality but asked no questions

Sorry Joe, Lisa is hot but this interview was horrible. It was short and she didn’t ask a single interesting question. I like looking at her but I would much rather see you in the videos. At least I hope Lisa gets better over time.

Although powergig itself might be primitive as a learning tool, future games based on the same concept can be phenomenal in my opinion.
A tool that can listen to your notes, tell you which were wrong, which bend is out of tune, teach you a scale & basic music theory, how to read music and play it on a guitar (or any other instrument for that matter). Being a guitar player myself, such a device would be worth its weight in gold.

I never got into music games in the first place. My first reaction to Guitar Hero was facepalming upon seeing it on the shelf at GameStop. I then quickly grew to hate it when it became ridiculously popular and created legions of fans who would brag non-stop about beating a really difficult song on expert. This also created giant pet peeve of mine: when people refer to their guitar-shaped controllers as guitars. It makes me want to beat them to death with a railroad spike, but I digress.
It doesn’t seem to me like PowerGig will do well. Having an actual six-string guitar in place of the typical controller will be too difficult and inaccessible to the average fan of music games. While many of them seem to be under the illusion that they can actually play guitar, they can do nothing more than press five colored buttons and wiggle a switch back and forth on an over-priced chunk of plastic. I know from experience that learning to play a real guitar is challenging and requires a lot of practice and determination. You can’t just pick it up and play like you can with Guitar Hero or Rockband. Besides all that, I’m pretty sure music game sales have been declining anyways. It doesn’t seem like the best time for a new franchise to make its debut. Especially not one that is going to be so difficult to play.

Excellent topics, I like this. After long searching I found this online that, the Guitar Tricks Core Learning System is our third-generation guitar lesson system geared toward the first-time student and those returning to guitar after some time. You can learn all of them only 5 days.

If you didn’t already know, Rock Band announced a similar “teach you to play guitar” mechanic along with their new guitar controllers. (Which are totally optional, which is great cause I will stick with my 5-button guitar). However, Rock Band’s “Pro” mode as they call it also expands on this by also having it for Drums, Keyboard, and Bass. (Though it will be a little weird using the 6-string guitar to play bass right?) So Power Gig’s innovation of “Play real guitar!” has already been overtaken by Rock Band.
As for those air drums of Power Gig. They are absolutely horrible. This is from trying them out myself, they will DESTROY your wrists. First of all, the sensors don’t work well. I normally play Hard/some Expert Drums, on this I was on medium, and I was barely able to make it through because of poor sensor placement. Second, since you aren’t hitting a pad, there is no rebound for the stick, so all of that kinetic force gets placed onto the hand snap of when you withdraw the stick. Which turns this into a very painful, unnatural drumming experience. Also, you have to use special sticks (which are thicker and heavier than what I’m used to) so be sure not to lose them!
Had this been the only game that was going to do the actual six string guitar this year, I might have at least given it props for that, but with a bad interface, horrible drums mechanics, and new technology that is already in the hands of their competition, I can only chalk this up to the same standard as “Rock Revolution.”

I wonder….can you connect your guitar? How does it work?

sue this one might actually be a real guitar… but if you want a music game i say go with rock band, they are going for a guitar with strings too, not a actual real functioning guitar but i has strings and then they have the mic and keyboard and a drum set far superior to this crap

I’m a real guitarist, a love to play to guitar hero some time, and i don’t like what i see right now, that can’t never be like guitar lesson or real guitar pratice, and if it is, a lot of people will be pissed of about this game soon after they buy it. seriously stay with the plastic thing it’s funny and everyone can play, if you want to learn guitar beside of putting 200$ on a game go buy an ibanez gio guitar beginner kit , you will got a decent guitar (surely better than this piece of shit) and an 15 watt amp with the manual and the cable. By the way if it is a real guitar, we will have o buy some string becaus after 2 or 3 month you have to change the string

Actually I really agree with you and Spookyspoon, I mean, if someone really want to play the guitar he doesn’t buy a freakin’ game, he buys a guitar, and look for a teacher
I’m a guitarist too, I fear that someone can easily confuse music to a game…And that’s bad!

i don’t do the rock and music games, but i think this will be very good, it might even de-throne (or at least tie of sorts with) guitar hero. rock band not so sure

Sadly, this game will likely get stomped by Rock Band 3, especially since RB3 will have a feature that lets the player not only use a real guitar, but electric drums or a full keyboard as well. Still, if PowerGig has a decent song list, it’ll be worth checking out.

I know some people will not agree with me, but i think that this idea won’t work. I don’t own guitar hero or rock band so I don’t want to talk about the game itself. But what I think is that some people after playing those games might get an illusion that playing guitar is easy, especially when developers tell them they’ve added a teaching tool in the game. I have a guitar, and I can safely say that learning how to play is not easy. You have to spend a lot of time on your own playing over and over the same melodies until you get the timing right and your fingers hit the right frets. I don’t want to discourage anyone, but that is how I see it. I am just afraid that many people will use this guitar only as a controller, and after they are done with the game they will not use it any more. In my opinion if you want to learn how to play a guitar, buy yourself a telecaster and take some lessons. I thing you might be better off buying a dvd or a book about playing a guitar, because this teaching mode will probably give you the same amount of information about playing. Air drums are a joke.
I hope you were able to understand my English. Good interview, but too short.

Maybe not a Telecaster since the cheapest are 700$+
I’d say go with an obscure brand of guitars, those are cheap most of the times. They may not sound great but hey, you will pay 250$ MAX for them.
As for this game, I already had a debate with my friends. Being a bassist/guitarist myself, I know how hard it is to play some song. Playing with a plastic string thingy and 5 buttons is way easier to play compared to a 6 strings and 12 frets (since it seems a small guitar, normally a guitar is 22 frets) which means 72 differents notes, not counting the chords. On a guitar hero controller, your hand stay in one spot but on a real guitar your hand keeps moving back in forth (well depanding on what song you play). Some Guitar Hero God will have a hard time playing this, I’m sure of that. So I still keeps my opinion: it won’t work and won’t teach you to play real guitar.
Oh and that drum thingy, one word: FAIL!

There’s only 12 notes in Western music.. A, A sharp/B flat, B, C, C Sharp/D Flat, D, D sharp/E flat, E, F, F sharp/G flat, G, G sharp/A flat. I’m sure you meant 72 frets when you include each string.

so this game can actually teach you how to play a proper guitar? Hmm…I’m interested, just tell me a price.

Wait how come joe’s boobs get a short interveiw?

Depends on the price and the song list on how well it will do but I fear its gonna struggle.

I really want PowerGig now, but the price will probably be outrageous.
