The Last Airbender Movie Review
Short Version: The Last Airbender is torture. M. Night takes the excellent animated series – removes the humor and life from it and only adds a few cool CGI effects. Acting? What acting? Dialogue? I’ve read Fan Fiction written by 9-yr old’s stronger than this. WORST movie of 2010, and arguably the WORST movie in the last Decade and I’m easy on movies, unlike games.

i remember this movie…it was terrible haha the cartoon is sooo much better, the movie doesnt even follow the cartoon very well. I’m not very hard on movies, heck im easily impressed and i give it a 0 out of 10 it is bad.
Uhhmm… I just watched the review, and I just had to say you forgot one thing. I don’t know if it is already said, but the movie-makers just literally copy paste a senctence. It was the “uncle, look” sentence which Zuko said in the beginning.

This movie? It took the life out of Avatar and made it some sort of dark mess. Avatar was hardly ever dark! It was always a joyful, bright, funny show. They had amazing fighting scenes and characters you could relate to and love. The movie just ruined everything. Its so sad because some people might think the cartoon sucks. Which it doesn’t. The movie had awful actingand the characters didn’t even look close to the characters. Fine. Appearences I can sort of forgive but they got the characters comepletely wrong. Katara’s mother’s betrothal necklace didn’t look anything like Katara’s necklace. They prononced everything wrong. Soka? No. Sokka. Ong? No. Aang. Uhvatar? No. Avatar. It was just really bad. Next time you want to base a movie off an amazing series. Maybe you should WATCH it first.
This movie honestly made a mockery of this wonderful animated series. Avatar was so funny, and so meaningful. Iroh was a great, wise man. Movie version? Some lifeless guy with none of Iroh’s humour! He wasn’t that wise either. I your going to make a movie out of the amazing Avatar then why don’t you watch the show? See the characters and write actual diologue to match them. Not screw them up and make them completely different. Apparantly there is a sequel in the works. And Toph is going to be in it. And they are probably going to get her wrong tok and that annoys me because Toph is a great character and deserves a better portrayal.
you are so wrong the movie was not only great but is followed the series and thats what i loved most people make movies that are so different from the book/cartoon/ and that is anoying they change the story and so it gets lost in a bad screenplay i loved this movie because i tells the story of aang the way its told in the series but the best part is he totalyyyyy nailed is with apa and momo they are almost the same as in the cartoon !!!!!!!!!

all I know is, if they even DARE to step into the territory of Korra’s time, they better pull out all the fucking stops. Show us that you care and understand what you did wrong HERE! Get good actors! (that goes DOUBLE for Korra. you fuck up Korra, You’ll be begging me to not cut your retinas in front of your children) Get good writers that LOVE and care about the series! and do not…DO NOT try to ass the 3D in post production. Actually give a fuck on how it can work like James did with his Avatar film!

Basically, it’s a saw rip off. Horrible acting, terrible script, cheesey moments, and some nice gore effects. This movie is sooo terrible, it’s actually entertainingly funny, and very enjoyable.

When you condense 20 episodes of a show into an hour and thirty minutes, have a terrible cast, write a terrible screenplay, and remove all the charm from the source material you get a movie that makes Avatar: The Last Airbender fans (I’m one myself) look stupid. The show had a great balance of action and comedy, the characters were extremely likable, and the story was coherent. The show was so good and it’s sad to see this movie butcher the series like that.
Joe, you gotta watch the cartoon it’s like the best Anime like cartoon in all America!!! as far as the movie goes bull s*#te. =)

this movie sucked. didn’t watch it in theaters Joe, don’t worry, watched it on netflix. They took everything good about the cartoon and butchered it. I have some defensive arguments for the cartoon. 1. Sokka is SUPPOSED to be ridiculus.2. they spent several weeks in the northern water tribe, it wasn’t like ‘i’m here! gimme an important job’ 3. Firebenders are supposed to be able to summon fire from nothing. they don’t need a **** torch! 4. They took no time explaining ANYTHING. they just did something and jumped into the next scene.

Well, this film was total shit. What else can be said? It’s actually an insult to the cartoon; it makes a ton of changes, totally unnecessary changes. Pretty sad to watch.
The cartoon is very good and the movie actually made some unnecasary changes… for example fire benders don’t need fire… they can produce it themselves and its epic…. watch the cartoon cause the whole series is on netflix… it is so good
I still watch the cartoon! It’s hilarious! I have it on dvd and if someone gave me the movie, I would break it and burn it in front of them and scream, “Heretic!”
First of all, the movie made my eyeballs bleed. The fighting could not be farther from what the characters did in the cartoon. Second, they mispronounced almost every name in the movie! It’s Aang, NOT ONG, you bums! Where was the comical Sokka we love? He was like a male Kristen Stuart!

Oh lord…don’t even associate this movie with the cartoon. The difference in quality between the cartoon and the movie is so staggering, it makes you wonder is M. Night Shayamalan watched Avatar before signing on to make the movie.
It makes NO sense that they thought it would work out to condense 20 episodes, 440 minutes of runtime into 103 minutes of movie time. IM-POSSIBLE. Honestly, they had no business making this movie…

But in defense of the cartoon itself, it is COMPLETELY separate. Do not think that “bad movie” = “bad cartoon”, it is so far from the truth. The cartoon really gets you engaged and does exactly what you asked for, it makes you care about all of these characters, even the bad guys.
It’s probably already been explained, but most of the cartoon was about Aang learning how to control his power. Avatar state plus no control at all equals lots of wasted places. Besides all that, in the cartoons Aang is a fanatical pacifist, leading him to dread the final battle where he’s afraid he might have to take a life. Excellent morality based drama in what can be considered to be a children’s cartoon puts it on my personal list of best cartoons ever.
As for the meteor, find a clip of the Fire Nation with their airships cooking the Earth Kingdom in the season 3 finale.
If you have the time, sit down and watch the whole thing. It’s awesome and it even makes sense. You’re going to love how every single character develops by leaps and bounds through the series. Zuko’s Uncle Iroh is my personal favorite. It doesn’t seem like he was a notable character from your review, so that’s a real shame.
If anything, the cartoon suffers most from a lack of planning. The season three finale kind of stretches as far as it can go to bring the big fights, and in the middle of the third season you can tell that the writers realized they added too many characters and they split them up into the group you follow and the group you forget about.
I don’t plan on seeing this until it comes out on netflicks and it’s effectively paid for in the monthly fee. I’m morbidly curious to see just how bad it is (kind of like Star Wars Kinect or Mindjack), but I know that this movie does not deserve any money.

The cartoon was actually pretty sweet up until that final battle. I hate how he defeats the firelord, I don’t understand where or when he learned to take away people’s bending, but even so it’s just lame. The battle was epic up until that part.

The movie was otherwise ok, all the effects and costumes and stuff, but in the end the whole story and actors were terrible! I really hope you watch the cartoon version of Avatar. I watched it a few years ago when I was yong enough to think it as a cartoon. Nowadays I respect it and think that the whole story is legendary! It would have been so awesome if this movieproject had wokred out, but they ruined it. It’s a shame. This could have been so much more. :C

The cartoon has much more time to develop its characters and set up a conflict. The Firebenders don’t need fire NEXT TO THEM to Firebend, as the whole POINT is that their bending is based on Northern Shaolin martial arts, which focused on breathing. Fire Benders literally breathed fire in the show, and the Fire comet was much more dangerous.
And Aang wasn’t a grim, wise badass in the show. He was a 100 year old little kid, excited to see how the world had changed, and he had a lot to learn.
Fuck this movie so hard.
Not to mention they can’t pronounce anyone’s fuckin’ name right, (Sooka? It’s fucking SOKKA. Like “Sock-Ah”) they can’t get anybody’s fucking race right, and they didn’t take any of the powers from the show. No Lightning-Bending from the Fire nation, no Ice Bending from the Water Nation, and uh, oh yeah WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO AANG’S GLIDER? I don’t even remember him using it. Did he? If he did it was extremely brief and overlooked as a massive insight into his character.
I highly recommend the show over this pointless, stupid, putrid garbage. The show is full of magic and lore and humor AND GOOD ACTION. You already got a taste of it from that little bit you watched.
i have all the avatar series (books as the series calls them) i love this show so much when i was younger i still do but forget Indiana Jones 4 this movie raped my childhood M night shyamalan if you ever come near the avatar story or universe again i will use water,earth,fire,air fan and sword to beat you down
I love avatar the last airbender show. The cartoon/anime was great, arguably one of the best cartoons to run in a while. The setting and world was strong and believable. I dare say, The world was as alive as in many other fantasy franchises such as lord of the rings and harry potter. The world was alive and everything from the nations, the characters, the different plot lines all sucked you into the world and made you care about things that happened to it. The death of characters or the fall of cities was real and made you sit on the edge as the world seemed to be evolving and the ending was let up to and made sense, not leaving any plot holes.
This movie was simply abysmal when compared to that and is absolutely an insult. This show ran for YEARS, you can’t sink it into a little movie. Heck, half a year to a full year was spent on the travel to the water nation, SOMETHING THAT TOOK ABSOLUTELY NO TIME AT ALL IN THE MOVIE! Heck, out of the 4 books, the only parts shown where the last few episodes of water and the first few of air, with major plot holes left because they tried to make it shorter. The series was great, but its complexity never left it a series that can be franchised as a movie. Even though the Lord of the Rings skipped half the things in the books, It still managed to mostly cover the main storyline and the movie was executed professionally and in an exciting way that let you take in how epic the world truly was.
The characters look nothing like they should, heck they’re missing half of the major ones that crucial to the story, and have next to none of the other ones. None of the signature moves are used and waterbending looks like it as deadly as me throwing a bucket of water at someone. What happened to a barrage of ice spkies, firebenders shooting lightning and aang being able to ride on his signature ball of air. Where’s the water nation fighting back against the fire nation boats, lifting them out of the water with their powerful waterbending and elite warriors fighting it out in combat.
This feels like a slap in the face by all the studios involved, especially nickelodeon for even authorizing such a thing and then daring to stamp their name on it. The only thing worse then a horrible movie is a horrible movie that had so much potential.
I swear to god. I SWEAR that this is an awful re-imagining of the Avatar series. M. Night Shamawhatiwhat is an awful director – he had one gem, and everything else is garbage. Just absolute garbage.

I’ve seen the cartoons, they all followed their own kick-ass plot while also orbiting around the big main plot of the whole series, and they get slapped in the face by this want-a-be “Sucker Punch” movie. The children in the movie look like little 8-year-olds and the Avatar only says about ten quotes throughout the entire movie. Isn’t this movie about him? I made the right call not to see this movie in theaters and I successfully persuaded my brothers not to see this movie in theaters and I’m happy.

Ok now hear me out before someone insults me. My dad bought this movie 1 year ago on DVD. OK we both watched this and after 30 minutes we both turned off the DVD player after ejecting the DVD putting it back in the case and put it aside until i could sell it to a store. Yes we both watched it at separate times. After doing that that night we searched the TV guide just to watch the cartoon to wipe our minds of that filthy film. Thank you and goodnight.

I’ve never wanted to charge and stab a movie screen until I saw this movie. I am a HUGE fan of the cartoon series and was so looking forward to this movie. When I saw it in theaters, I’ve not been this horrified since the movie Dragon Wars.
Seriously, the Last Airbender’s actors makes the Twilight movie seem like a damn epic. Not only did they screw up the characters, dialogue, even the damn races of the original cartoon, but they also removed anything that resembled the original’s use of Martial Art styles to represent the Bending arts.. and they replace it with this simi-dub stepping / river dance / martial art / old-man-stomping-on-a-paper-bag-full-of-shit choreographs. It was so horrible! Two girls and one cup was less traumatizing then this movie.
M.Knight Shama-shlong said he wanted to make this movie because his daughter loved the cartoon series….What he must have intended by that statement was that he really dispises his daughter and wanted to crush all her hopes and dreams by taking something she loved, shooting it in the head, raping it from behind, beheading it, disemboweling it, cooking it on a propane grill with a cheep knock off BBQ sauce, eating it with a spork and shitting it back out on her bed. THAT is how unrelentingly evil this man must be for what he has done to the series…

Your comparison to DB Evolution is spot on. A movie so bad, based upon a good series, that makes all fan’s hang there head in shame. I love the show as well as DBZ, and hate to my very being these movies.
Most of the problem with the movie is that they had to condense an entire season into an hour and half. All of the character interaction and each of their relationships and how they evolved over the time of this very, very long story. Dude all I’m going to say is watch the entire series, it does start off kind of silly and what not, but it gets epic the longer it goes on.
This movie was absolute shit, you cannot condense so much stuff into such a short amount of time. I don’t blame you for thinking the series must have been bad because of how bad the movie was.

watch the cartoon at the end when he takes the ocean and covers the ship. In the cartoon he turns into a beast and destroys ships and she show is so bad ass. The movie took out about half of the cool shit and made it stupid. The show is sick the movie…No it sucks dick
