The Last Airbender Movie Review
Short Version: The Last Airbender is torture. M. Night takes the excellent animated series – removes the humor and life from it and only adds a few cool CGI effects. Acting? What acting? Dialogue? I’ve read Fan Fiction written by 9-yr old’s stronger than this. WORST movie of 2010, and arguably the WORST movie in the last Decade and I’m easy on movies, unlike games.

Hi Joe
I have to admit I have yet to see this movie, mostly by how often I have heard how bad it is. So I will not pay to watch this movie, however if I somehow manage to borrow a copy by some sorry bastard stupid enough to buy it, then that’s that.
I can agree with what you say, most people who haven’t seen the series will have a hard time following. One movie can not equal a whole 25 episode season worth.
Its like saying: Hey here we got some people, why are they here? Fuck that, watch the show if you want answers.
My problem in this movie was that they didn’t think through with how the not-fans was gonna understand any of this.
I would have loved watching this movie, if it hadn’t gotten so fixated following the series. How about thinking about how the beginners may see this. how about making a movie about a different avatar in this avatar-universe and follow that guy/girl. That way people would be introduced to the Avatar-world and the fans would have been a bit happier (I think)
And so instead of cramming in a whole series in a 103 minutes movie, they could have just focused on something else.
Also the live-action…If you don’t know how to execute a good action scene, with bending and martial arts, don’t bother trying.That being said a movie in animation would have been awesome as long as it didn’t have the whole series crammed into it.
Also the episode you saw. I think you saw one of the extra episode. The ones that are not really in anyway involved with the storyplot.
I do recommend watching the series, the characters are good, especially Zuko and the Uncle. Also Sokka isn’t so irritating in the series like in the movie and he has a character.
I may just be talking trough my arse here however this is how I felt about this and I just wanted to tell that you did a good job with this review.

First of i want to say that THEY GOT Aangs F***ING NAME WRONG WHO THE F*** IS AUNG OR HOWEVER YOU SAY IT!!!??? second being a person who watched the entire cartoon series i will they you that even though they are fighting the fire nation the whole time they throw in a bunch of sub-factions and even the earth kingdom a few times. I am glad a got this from red box for only 1$ because if i saw it in the theater i would have DEMANDED a refund
Actually, in the cartoon, the Air benders have the flying bisons as a life friend that has a soul link with each other
Also the fire nation, before they broke up with the other 3 nations, had dragons as their family and the cartoon has better points then the movie because we cared about how people die.
Casing point, There’s one scene where a volcano is out and one of the previous avatars tried to stop it. But he dies from his friend from youth out of hate and spite, And while he dies, the dragon sees him dead, and lays down around him in front of the lava to die with him, sounds like it wouldn’t be sad but if you put to ANY scene from this movie it will be INCREDIBLY sadder.
I don’t care if they have bad actors for the rest of the movies, if they at least make toph FUCKING AMAZING, and still blind … it will be a 3/10 to the most just because of her.
And finally, there is going to be sequels because in the cartoon, the fire nation gets tougher and tougher: to the point that when the comet comes, they burn the entire world free of anything, or try to,
advance to the metal age, create drills to attack the earth kingdom, secretly take one the largest cities of the Earth kingdom over by their own people, steal Ang’s Bison, capture Ang, KILL HIM!!!, and send an assassin to capture or kill him, knowing the next Avatar will be born in water.
And I will be PISSED OFF if they don’t have any of these.

I saw this movie when it came out… i’m still trying to get over it. I don’t even know the cartoon that well, the friend who paid for my ticket (I thankfully didn’t have to pay for this abortion of a movie) was so enraged by this film that we watched a few episodes of the cartoon and I had more fun with the 2-3 episodes of the cartoon I saw than the movie, and I even remembered scenes from the movie that were in the cartoon and it astounded me that even though some things were pretty much shot-for-shot, it still was better in the fucking cartoon.
On top of all that, so many moments I was wondering if the characters were just flat out high. There’s a scene (I CAN STILL REMEMBER THIS, THAT IS HOW STUPID IT WAS!) Where the waterbenders have a meeting and they say something along the lines of “When the fire benders come put out all the fires around the town”, and maybe 5 minutes later the fire benders come and it seems that everyone forgot their little plan to put out the fires because there’s candles and giant fucking fires everywhere. It made no sense and I was fighting myself trying to stay awake.
The only pleasurable moment I got was when a friend of mine pointed out that the princesses hair at one point looks like a penis… that was seriously the high point for me
I saw the Movie 2 weeks after it came out with my friend. My WHOLE family and I just loved the Animation of it- Even my mom went and bought the Earth and Fire sections and we all had an awesome time watching everything- My Action Fan dad- My Romantic fan Mom- My Coming of age fan Sister-and me-who just overall loved everything+ the comedy. I am so glad my family never had to see the atrocity of the Last Airbender Movie. I love them THAT much not to ruin a beloved animated show we all loved. I left the theater that day thinking- “….what the hell?” AND I ACTUALLY FORGOT THE MOVIE 1 WEEK AFTER WATCHING IT!!!! IT LEFT NO FREAKING IMPACT!!! With the Animated show- I was thinking “OMG…this is big…OMFG!!!!!!! I DON’T KNOW H O W TO FEEL! DO I WANT ZUKO TO COME BACK HOME AND GAIN HIS FATHER’S APPROVAL?!?!?! OR DO I WANT AANG TO SAVE THE WORLD FROM THE FIRE LORD!!?!?!? KYAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH?!?!?!? ZUKO-TAKE YOUR SHIRT OFFF!!!!! lol.
My advice, M. Night- like what the other guys on here were saying- You just can’t cram 25 plot building episodes into 1 2 hour movie. You just CAN’T. I would just do….maybe have 5 GOOD movies for each section- Water, Air, Earth, and Fire.

This movie doesn’t deserve a single point on the final verdict scale. This piece of garbage really disrespects the series, because in the series there was a lot of cool side adventures that the main characters went on that really made you care for them and make them more memorable. In addition the movie was trying to do too much in its time length trying to condense 25 episodes of the 1st season into a 2 hour film. Overall, this movie is a piece of shit and it doesn’t deserve its title.

Every word he said about this movie was true. I saw it, and, as an Avatar fan, I felt molested. Honestly molested. I hope Joe has since seen the cartoon, because it really is a wonderful show, especially considering it was made for kids.

Water is the only element that u need to carry… Fire comes in rage because it is an aggressive element. Wtf why do people need their own fire in the movie? I am so glad the theater was packed with every pre-pubescent brat wanting to see that damn Twilight movie that I decided not to watch The Last Airbender because I cannot stand crowded theaters on opening nights. And then I saw the reviews the next day… from everyone – professional, fanbase, those who had watched the animated series, those who had not, even M. Night nutters were calling this an atrocity.
About the only good thing I can think of with Twilight is that its legion of preteens and housewives kept me out of spending horrible 3d prices for this film abortion and the final nail on the coffin with me watching something from M. Night ever again.

And so does the rest of the avatar fanbase, except for maybe the prince and his uncle being good character adaptions.
To defend the cartoon series I would say that the story pacing, character introduction and superior fighting scenes would attribute to the cartoons validity of it being better then the movie. Not only that, the comedy can be funny when it wants to. I would have to say that the shorts you watched were from the avatar mini-specials, not the best but definitely not the worst parts of the cartoon to be introduced to.
The movie was terrible and the reactions in the movie theaters itself showed. No joke, there was so much rage and anger from fans and non-fans. For non-fans because it failed on so many levels and even more so for fans because it failed on even more levels than non-fans.It’s unfortunate you saw the movie first because your view on the cartoon may be more skewed on how low the bar could have been set.
The best advice would really be to just give the first season a try. Shyamalan had no idea how to condense a 25 episode season of character development and story progression into an hour and a half or so and it clearly, painfully shows.

i wanted to point out, that this movie won in Germany now “die goldene Himbere” aword, what gives prices for THE worst movie that was shown in the year in Germany… and Avatar wins nearly every category that they have… so it IS the WORST movie YET since 1981!!! (Birth of the price)

I mean u could trow more 3-D stuff in by this movie then in every Spacemovie… when u can show elementary magic! But they don’t! And did even worst…

Show is probably one of my favorite shows. Its 3 seasons long and I’ve still managed to watch it 3 times. I despise what this guy did to the movie, but was anyone really that surprised considering who they got to direct it? I mean hes been down hill for years.
well, the cartoon had little quests than always wars.
The cutsie big head thing you saw before the film could well be one of the skits the creators made before the third season, just to generate hype. The reason I say this is yes the show does draw inspiration from anime, but not the hyper deformed chibi style and I don’t think you could really call the show itself cutsie.
With the skits they had fun with the premise of the show, added a few in jokes, they were treats for the fans. I imagine it’s probably cheap to get licensing for something like that (if you need it) than for a full episode, and would be a good thing for a die hard fan to see before what is a highly anticipated film.
Shame it sucked. It sucked so badly it actually lessened the series for me.

FYI the cartoon is very good. I saw it myself and i have the DVD’s for the series. the Movie was a total abomination of the entire series. it cut so much out of the plot and BIG ERROR the fire benders don’t need a pre-generated source of fire they could just create it with their Chi. See the cartoon its funny, action packed, and relatively short for a series.

The movie is only fun to watch if u have the rift track. Also, in the next movie, Aang will need to learn Earthbending. As to what happened in the movie, almost none of the fights went the same way, the climax was made up! MOVIE WAS SHIT ON A GOLDEN SERIES!
The reason why there can still be drama even with Aang being able to enter Avatar State is that he can’t do it reliably, and then when he does he’s got an unfortunate tendancy to generate a massive storm or level a friendly fortress complex or freeze himself in a block of ice like a complete moron. Also, there is an incident in the second season finale.
The Sky Bison repeatedly gets Team Avatar noticed, because he’s a ten-ton flying monster with an arrow on his head. They also occasionally try to shoot him down with giant flaming rocks.
Sozien’s Comet is introduced in the 11th episode of the show, IIRC. According to Avatar Roku, it boosts firebenders a hundredfold, and apparently allowed them to break into the Air Temples by using firebending to make their feet into rockets.
The fight scenes in the show are a lot less clumsy, because nearly every movement generates a visible effect. Zuko goes in for a triple punch to make a spread of firebolts fairly frequently, while his (really awesome) uncle tends to make one punch per opponent on the rare occasions he doesn’t spend fights sleeping, drinking tea, or just standing around. The other styles are somewhat slower, but even airbending takes fewer than three seconds for anything used in combat.
Zuko’s sister made the same two appearences in the first season as in the movie, but had a much more sinister smile for both of them. She’s the main villan of season two, though.
Although you didn’t mention it, the Earthbender Concentration Camp is much less stupid in the show. It’s basically an oil rig made entirely of metal, so the earthbenders are helpless. Waterbenders aren’t, which is why they go in cages in the desert instead.
The fire nation has some pretty cool machines in the show, with the tanks getting a brief cameo in the movie.
Sokka had a more prolonged relationship with Yue in the show. The death of the moon spirit in the show was followed by Iroh taking out six firebenders in about four seconds and Aang getting a nifty thousand-voice chorus. They left out Sokka’s actual girlfriend and the part where she gave him object lessons in martial arts. Incidently, Sokka wore a dress briefly in the show. There were extenuating circumstances.
I mentioned Avatar Roku above; in the show he occasionally helps Aang out with Avatar stuff. He’s the previous incarnation of the Avatar and had a dragon named Fang, who sort of appears in the movie. Also, in the show Aang learned about the moon and ocean spirits from Koh the Facestealer, who is pretty memorable.
dont worry man the anime show is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better then the movie (you should listen to your friend), think of it this way DESPITE the bad reviews the movie earned over 300 million dollars just because the series was made so well, i repeat THAT movie made over 300 million dollars just think about how awesome the series would have to be to cause that to happen

a few things i wanted to add, aang can only enter the avatar state if he is in genuine danger or if he is really emotionally upset, as well theres a drawback to it though hes nearly unstoppable if he does get killed in the avatar state then the reincarnation cycle will be broken and the avatar will no longer exist
another thing is the animals the skybison and the flying lemur named appa and momo, in the anime they were very lovable infact there were some episodes *anime spoiler alert* where the bison had actualyl been kidnapped and the charcters were all very crushed about that and it was such a wonderful scene when they finally got him back (well written emotionally)
the characters in the anime are very well written as well, sokka is usually the guy who comes up with the plans and hes also a great source for comic relief (and he is freaking hilarious)
katara is usually the motherly character of the group trying to keep everything together though if angy well dont mess with her is all i can say
aang in the show is more of a goofy kid much more funny though a skilled bender (often uses his wits to solve problems in a creative and entertaining way) and fights when he needs to and the series shows how he grows into his role as the avatar (in a well written and not rushed way)
what i can say if if u liked that little anime parody u saw well the actual series is much better then that you should really check it out, atleast the first few episodes i can guarantee like it better then the movie
So you wanted to defend the whole “Fire vs. Wave Thing”
1. The Fire Nation, in the cartton, can generate their own flames WITHOUT the need to having fire anywhere around their area
2. The Huge title was actually created by the koifish (I can’t remember the ful details in that)
3. Aang has problems going into “Avatar” mode (Kinda like going Super Sayan in DBZ), which is extremely hard to control and extremely hard to summon. It takes Aang just about all 3 seasons to really know how to use it
4. Sozen’s Comet effect is much stronger. It basically raises their power to the point where the big bad can actually burn across the land, completely. He can reduce the land to a smouldering wasteland.
