Fallout: New Vegas – More of the same. Good or bad?
![]()
From my play time with Fallout: New Vegas at E3 2010 I came away from the experience a bit underwhelmed. I suppose I expected too much, some really new and interesting additions that would excite my desire to roam the wastelands once again. Instead what we get is a few small improvements and tweaks to the gameplay that we enjoyed. They are playing it safe, or being lazy – I cant figure out which yet.
I tried to do my best to even play-up these additions when interviewing the awesome Pete Hines, in the hopes that he might reveal something hes been hiding up his sleeve (like a post-apocalyptic vehicle for travel across the wasteland) but to no avail. More of the same is a fine line to walk amongst gamers – apologists of the franchise will say that’s exactly what they want, others will point out the disappointment of not having the series evolve enough.
So what do you think? Based on the interview and what you know of Fallout: New Vegas – Is more of the same, good or bad? In either case it seems as if the general public has already spoken. Pre-orders for New Vegas have already outpaced its predecessor and excitement levels couldn’t be higher. I wish I was one of them.
I’m sure its going to be a great game, how could you go wrong if you change so little? But I cant help but think of what Obsidian might have done had they dug a bit deeper.

Is Fallout New Vegas too mature for a 12 year old? He played the last one and LOVED it and I don’t think it was too bad. I’m against sex and drugs but the violence I don’t mind as much. I know he won’t go out and try it. What do you think?
Wasnt for me!
Pre order collector edition.
Check, done.
All bethesda’s games that i’ve played were unique and very enjoyable so i have total faith in this one too.
I agree with Vallhala because Fallout New Vegas Is A Sequal to Fallout 3.There is proof on a video about it.
Well listen people, if the game sucks, it sucks. And if it’s good, it’s good. No need to judge too soon, we all just have to wait and see is all. Also on a side note, I had max support in all my arguments against Captain Scrambles with like over +8, I wonder why it lowered so quickly, could it be some stupid, whiny little 14 year old bitches have seen this post and taken his side… could be you never know. All I did was defend Fallout, and if you guys really think this’ll suck even after reading my comments then fine. Remember if it’s good it’s good, and if it’s bad, it’s bad, no need to judge harshly now, because only doing something like that will make it bad you see?
If people say this game is not necessary since it is pretty much the same game, then what about games like Grand Theft Auto. It is pretty much the same game ever since the first one, but with tweaks and improve graphic. It is fine if they make 1 or 2 more games with the same engine, but don’t overdo it like GTA.
Of course, if you want a totally new game with new engine and etc, then you better wait at least 5 years like what id did with Tech 5 engine
Notice how this called Fallout:New Vegas not Fallout 4.
The games is/was designed to expanded upon Fallout not throw the book out. Fallout 3 was a successful and enjoyable game with a few minor flaws such as depopulation of cites (2 people is not a town), the map system, and a lacking in FPS department. Fallout New Vegas is introducing what appears to be larger populations, the ability to aim down the sights, and to ability to craft items. I and alot of fans were not expecting a full blown conversion. Fallout 3 wasn’t broke so why fix it?
Oh come on who is complaining about this game, fuck off spoony ass fanboys! You don’t know a shit about RPG, you are a bunch of “RPG newbies”, who started playing RPG around the time of Dragon Age and think can come here and talk shit like it should or it shouldn’t be. I can’t wait for this game, if that is or not like an expansion pack, I don’t know, what I know is that this is the only decent game to come soon.
Here’s an interesting thought: What if Obsidian, who was working with permission from Bethesda, wasn’t given enough free will. What if Bethesda flat out TOLD Obsidian “don’t rock the boat.” Just putting that out there.
Fallout: New Vegas looks like Fallout 3, that’s part of the deal between Bethesda and Obsidian, but it’ll be much superior as a RPG. The leveling system, skills checks, dialogs, story, every RPG element and the mature atmosphere are going will be much closer to Fallout 2 than Fallout 3. Not to mention New Vegas will bring a lot of ideas from the cancelled Van Buren’s Fallout 3.
We all know it’ll never achieve the depthness of Fallout 2, but I think New Vegas will be much closer to this RPG masterpiece than Fallout 3 ever dreamt to be.
Can I hug you, I’m glad someone know their damn Fallout history, and actually has faith in these developers, unlike all the people that say over and over again that this game is the same. No really can I hug you though
They need to take a step up and make some innovations. That’s what i was expecting with this game, but hell no, same animations. The only change i’ve really noticed were the weapon animations, but that could have been done in an expansion or community addons. Hopefully the gameplay will outweigh the technical stuff.
On a different note, i’m still waiting for Elder Scrolls 5
Still the same terrible animation… Why not improve that? It looked terrible in Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3…. Fix that geez, can’t take more then a week max.
Well you have to agree it is tough to fix animation in a game like Fallout, mainly because they might be working with limited character animation so the game doesn’t lag as much.
Boy you sure ask tough question, you basically blasted Obsidian lol. I love it keep up the great work.
hey Joe, what did the dev say after asked about the reverse ghoul strippers question?
Oh, wow… Isn’t it amazing that we’re getting Fallout: ODST….
I’m kinda like Spoony you know. I love Trolls like you, or if not a Troll a person who is, dare I say WROOOOOOOOOOOONG! I’m not gonna hate on you but look at my last response I gave you, do you really think you know what your talking about, cause I don’t. ODST was in production for less than half the time this was out. It was SUPPOSED to be DLC, but someone got greedy and up’d the price. This is not a 5 our campaign, a one multiplayer mode! This is a FULL GAME TITLE! Not a quick cash in. Maybe you need some cold water splashed in your face, or at least the buts of your brains that store common knowledge, like memory. If you were a REAL Fallout player you would look at the other games. NONE of them where half assed, all fun and all stayed the same, UNTIL Fallout 3. This project is no acception, in fact this was already in production back in 2003. Few know this but New Vegas was to be the original F3, but then the company got bankrupt, and Bethesda bought the license. Stop talking like you know something when you clearly DO NOT!
My favorite part of this post was when he clearly stated “I’m not gonna hate on you,” but then did anyway. No, it was when he said he was like Spoony, when Spoony complained about the exact same things I did, no it was when….
You get my point. Let’s look at the facts here, shall we?
1. Bethesda shuffled development off to a third party studio.
2. The game runs on the exact same engine as Fallout 3, with no substantial changes whatsoever.
3. Throughout all of the trailers, gameplay demos, & articles, this game has completely failed to distinguish itself from it’s predecessor in any way.
4. Even the PR campaign has endlessly praised this game for being the exact same with some minor improvements.
You know what this game reminds me of? Older PC expansion packs, like Bloodmoon for Morrowind, or Creature’s Isle for Black & White. Both introduced tons of content & lengthy campaigns, but because at their core, they were the same game, they were treated like expansion packs. BECAUSE THEY WERE. What I’m saying here is that a new campaign doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a new game.
It’s clear that you really do want to love this game, & are perceiving me as an uninformed hate-spewer, but I don’t think I’m being unreasonable. The problem here is you’ve already decided this game is going to be great, & are looking for reasons to validate that belief. I’m trying to be objective here, & if you look at it that way, this game is really, really not shaping up impressively. It’s a glorified expansion pack that’s going to cheat several well-intentioned gamers (Read, you) out of their dough.
Are we done having rant wars, now? This is getting childish…
Hehehe. I love this guy. So what your saying is because this game wasn’t in your face like Halo Reach or Killzone 3, spending massive amounts of money on Demos, trailers, and a lot of other stuff basically spoiling the experience from the start for the players… you are not satisfied. Well I guess your right but then again I just love the way you addressed yourself in that last comment. “Oh no you said you weren’t picking on me but you lied… you big meanie”. Hehehe. I’m not a hater like most Fallout fans, but trying to say that this game isn’t impressive because they didn’t show you much is just stupid. This is how I see it, you’ll stick to your guts to spite me and only rent the game, you play it realize it is pretty good, you get deeper into it as the experience gets better and better, then you finish the game and due to your immense pride come back to these posts and tell me it sucks with a fake list of reasons just so you can say that I was wrong, when you clearly know I was right. Don’t get the game, I don’t care, just don’t talk smack about it just because your a sour gamer.
Wow. Way to not acknowledge my argument on any level & simply attack me as a person. You’re being very mature, well done.
You know you guys on the Angry Joe Show comments section are saying things like,”Oh he’s saying it’s the same with more polish”, or,” Oh it’s all the same and the guy just won’t say it”, or my personal favorite,”This game is more like an add on and will be all the same as Fallout 3″. Well I have one question… WTF IS WRONG WITH THAT!? You guys are the whiniest forums poster/commenters I have ever seen. Since when was Fallout 3 considered a bad game? Wouldn’t you want the formula to stay the same, but with a little more polish, I do and if you are all done saying crap like, “OH IT’S THE SAME!”, well SCREW YOU! It’s like when people compare Oblivion with Fallout 3, two completely different games that should not even be compared, all they had was the same first person view, item management, and dialogue systems. You all whine about these games coming out well guess what if this game is only half as good as F3 then I would be happy, and trust me they’ll make a lot of DLC so I’ll be playing it again and again and again! I still have my copy of F3 from 2 years ago and still play it to death today. Bottom line quite your stupid, inscesent, full o’ crap whining and stop nit picking on what these people say in interviews. Don’t you want to be surprised and not have it all spoiled or have you heard just enough to think,”Pfft, it’s the same game”, cause it’s not… so knock it off, what would Joe say? HE WOULD GIVE IT A CHANCE!!!
Why would I want to pay sixty dollars for a game that hasn’t really innovated at all? If we don’t at least attempt to drive the medium forward, it will stagnate. It’s how we get our Halo: ODST’s, or Modern Warfare 2′s, & our New Vegas’. These games are doing nothing exciting or new, & quite frankly, are bad for the industry. You may be content with sitting down & playing rehashed sequels like a good little sycophant, but that does not mean everyone is. I’d appreciate it if you didn’t insult me for expecting more out of a sixty dollar purchase than a fucking expansion pack.
You know, they said the same thing about Fallout 3, that it was uninnovative and just Oblivion with guns… I want to know what did you think of Fallout 3. I got Fallout 3 first then played Oblivion and was shocked to find out how substantially different it was, because I heard people like you say it was an unworthy successor. Now people are still shell shocked by ODST and it’s price point… but this isn’t a 5 hour campaign OK! THIS IS A FULL ON TITLE! Angry Joe himself said OPDST was supposed to be DLC for Halo 3 but then some corporate bull crap happened and they changed it to a full title. Well these people had a budget, support, an A-List crew, and 2 years to work on it. This is not a quick cash grab, this is a full fledged, fully immersive game, not a 5 hour campaign and a horde multiplayer rip off. So it doesn’t sound impressive now, PLAY THE GAME THEN COMPLAINT!!!
Fan of the caps lock, much?
This is a quick cash grab. It’s built with the exact same engine as Fallout 3, with only minor additions made to appease the absolute nuts. Watch the gameplay footage; literally nothing has changed. Iron sights are a nice aesthetic choice, but they won’t do anything major for the game, it’s just flavor. Even the representative endlessly gushed about how the game was going to be Fallout 3 with a few improvements. It’s shaping up to be a generic “safe sequel.” Obviously, it won’t be bad, but why not at least TRY to do something new?
I’m not saying this game should have never been made, I’m saying that the way it’s being marketed is manipulative, & it’s price point is exploitative. It could just as easily have been DLC, & it’s plainly obvious. This isn’t a sequel, it’s an expansion pack. Deny it all you want, but this is the same game in a new setting.
But to disengage from my violent ranting & actually answer one of your questions, my thoughts on Fallout 3. I actually enjoyed the game quite a bit. When I first began playing, I was disappointed that many of Oblivion’s inadequacies made it into my beloved franchise, including strangely lifeless NPC’s & clunky combat, but the more I played it, the more I liked it. It was genuinely exciting to explore my world & uncover the dozens of side quests & hidden areas. The writing also impressed me quite a bit, as well. It was sharp, dark, & at times, incredibly funny.
That being said, I’ve already played Fallout 3. Yes, I liked it, but not enough to pay sixty dollars to play it again. There, isn’t that better? Do you find my position so unreasonable or bothersome?
O.k, O.k. You obviously have never played the other Fallout games, so you have no idea what Obsidian had done in the past with Fallout back when they where Black Isle Studios. The story has nothing to do with Fallout 3, that is made for Fallout 4. I know Obsidian is still looked at with suspicion after Alpha Protocol, but that was again a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GAME. You complain about the price point when this is expected to be a full title. Even though Obsidian is making the game, it is Bethesda who is watching over it and making sure they don’t screw it up. Who do you think this rep was from any way. Next, you say it at least needs to try and innovate some more, well yeah I can agree with that, but really what needs to be innovated, tell me. Quests? Guns? Party members? Location? Character creation? Tell me, I saw few complaints about Fallout 3, and most of those few where about some minor bugs and glitches. You think you can do better, give me a list of innovative ideas. A real ground breaker that will make this game a true testament of your will, and I’ll be fair and judge it respectively. But one pointer, if you dare say multiplayer, you might as well just not post, because I could think of many reasons on why that would be impossible on any system unless it was a heavily developed MMO title. Lastly, you say an excellent RPG that lasts you 60-100 hours per character, with multiple choices, fully explorable map, dynamic combat, and excellent gameplay isn’t worth your money? Well what is worth it, Modern Warfare 2? Oh yeah I would love to spend $60 to play a broken online shooter that utilizes more bugs and cheap tactics that piss people off easily than in any other online shooter. the way you complain is like when a child gets an ice cream, and he loves it, then he wants some more, but then he bitches, kicks, and screams because it doesn’t have sprinkles.
That guy is saying basicly “The game will be the same”. And Joe insists on revealing something new and interesting which would justify coming out with new game…. And that guy just runs in circles… fail.
well what do you expect? it’s not meant to be a completely “new” game but more of an “add-on” as it’s not Bethesda making (coding, creating layouts, maps, AI..ect) it but they have given it to someone else while they do another as such, “Fallout 4″ has been officially announced already but it’s development stage is another story.
FO;NV = more FO3 with polished good mods, if that didn’t make any sense then how about comparing it to Vista and Win7
I agree, accept about the add on part, but what sickens me is that people think that because it does not say Fallout 4 it’s not a sequal. What the hell do they expect. Those people a) are bitchy little 12 year olds b) are not real fans of Fallout c) like to troll d) need to grow a brain!
My favorite part of this thread was when this guy got disliked for pointing out the obvious. Splendid.
I see no problem in pointing out the obvious, but it’s when people act like pointing out the obvious is considered a major dis to the person they are pointing it out to that makes them look like a raging jack ass… you know, like you Captain.
I would really like to see some relationships between the player character and other main characters, like in Mass Effect. Sentinel Lyons, (given the right dialogue and choices) showed her interest in the Lone Wanderer after the end of Broken Steel. There were also several other female characters that showed possibilities. Also some improvements to the Buddy system and new weapons and perks have been noted by Bethesda.
My major problems are can they execute the game as well as Bethesda and keep it engaging addictive, and a good story. I would also like to see later down the road depending on how many games/ playable characters there may be, is a culmination of every good or bad thing a player does assisting or destroying the reconstruction of America after The Great War.
It has been a while for me to see a representative to be so enthusiastic about a game, I do believe that FO:NV will be a good game even though there has been apparently some cuts (not due to censorship) according to a bureaucratic censoring board (BBFC) but the cuts might be well worth it.
Given how FO:3 played there should be a whole new world to discover and whole new hosts of wacky people although I am disappoint there is no new game engine but then again I suppose we are going to have to wait for TES V.
the biggest let down has to be the DRM, as many were angered with FO3 having GFWL but many fail to see that it wasn’t a requirement, in fact there was so little DRM that it still stands naked compared to the other games of today, if Bethesda kept the same DRM ideology as they did with FO3 then not only they would make good games but would’ve set a DRM standard in the gaming industry
