The Expendables Review
For a film that could have gotten so many things wrong The Expendables Delivers on its promise! An action spectacle with a star studded cast of the past and present doing what they do best. While it can’t live up to the films of the golden age of action (80s), it still delivers in all the ways that ultimately count.
What you’ll Like:
• An Amazing roster of some of my favorite action stars ever and some new guys I freaking love like Jason Statham and Terry Crews!
• The hand to hand combat in the film was better than expected – everyone fought in their own style and it made for these larger than life epic beatdowns.
• The massive climactic end battle where the Expendables team fights damn near the entire island’s army.
• For coming from much different types of action films, all the stars worked well together and had great chemistry.
• Best Part: Terry Crew’s Sexy Girlfriend! =) You’ll understand when you see the movie.
What you’ll Hate:
• Arnold is only in it for a few minutes. (Please make an Expendables 2 with him on the team!)
• Why exactly did General Garza even need the American Monroe, so that the film had a more well known bad guy?
• Garza needed more heavy hitters than just Steve Austin and some British dude, they had no chance!
• Needs more Terry Crews!
• Worst Part: When scouting the island, Stallone and Jason manage to kill a truck load of armed soldiers who had them at gun point without a shot fired – that’s a bit TOO much like the chessy 80s action films. Less of that more of the rest of the film.
Final Verdict:
8/10
Very Fun!

This is just another reason why I keep a watch on your site, I saw this when it came out and it KICKED ASS! The theater was packed (75:25, men to women) and everybody walked out with at least a grin. I went in expecting just a fun, dumb action flick which would still have been great and hoping they wouldn’t screw this up in any number of ways, but this was much better than any of my expectations.
This was an Action Movie, I don’t understand why those “Professional Critics” feel that every film needs to be some massively deep story.
The story was pretty good, the characters worked great together, and the action was FANTASTIC. I especially liked how it broke several of “The Rules” of movie fights, one being that 2 on 1 fight. That fight got the whole audience to “OOOO” with several “Oh man!”s and a few “Duuuude”s scattered throughout.
Voice of the people is what you are Joe.
Awsome Movie waithing for the second part
Why do people like the Dark Knight so much baffles me, it was a nice movie but not a nice BATMAN movie.
ANyway I still gotta see this one I cant wait!
This is the ONLY review on your webpage I don’t agree with the score…I was surprised you gave it 8/10 just saying
this movie was serviceable for me… that’s all… when I saw the cast I knew the kind of movie I wanted this to be because I love those movies…. I wanted funny one liners and 80′s dialogue … I wanted over the top ridiculous action … I don’t think it really stacks up in those area with any 80s action movies…
I’d give this one a 6/10 at best…. it was watchable….
This movie is a absolute Dude flick, there were chick flicks and now there is a Dude Flick, Jet Li, Jason Statham’s ninja skills, and Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo attitude. Bad Ass.
I listened to my man joe and bought this movie on dvd and MAN! this movie kicks so much ass, i really hope they make a sequal. the cast did a great job, there was a real sense of brotherhood and unity among them. all i can keep thinking is if they got these guys together for a predator movie HOLY SHIT that would be kick ass lol.
great review joe
This movie is so average, and its mostly only Stallone and Statham.
Joe, I would never listen to anyone but you.
Joe I watched your review of this movie and I got seriously pumped to watch it. Then this other reviewer’s review of this movie made me sad because he said the opposite of what you said.

and guys stop leaving blank comments it pisses people off. this site is to discus opinions and if someones opinion sucks. dont vote it down you should be glad we all have a mind of are own. and to express my opinion im going to say this. FUCK YOU CAL GOVERNMENT LET THE MAN DO WHAT HE WANTS BITCHES.
JOE YOU ARE THE EPIC REVIEWER IT IS TRUE!!!!
Does this film even need a review? It has many of the best action stars ever together in one movie! I don’t fucking care if they just stood together in a room the entire movie, I would still go watch this movie.
Great Great Review, I thought it was awesome how pointed out the fact that the MERCs didn’t go back for love interest but for a chance to do something humanly. I thought I was the only one who knew that too.
And I agree F those so call professional movie critics, you can’t always have a Forrest Gump movie all the time.
funny review, keep more video movie reviews coming
Just watched this and it should be awarded a ‘Sucks ASS’ 3/10 score for sucking so hard. Such a bland film with wasted potential given its cast. I prefer the last Rambo film for dumb ass action over this.
i luv it how u were like go go go go go see both of these movies go GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I felt the directing was pretty poor at times, the chemistry was very artificial and with so many plot-holes you wonder why they bothered with a plot.
I think if they had a proper director you wouldn’t have scenes like when Jet Li got beat up by Lundgren a close up on Jet Li’s face as Stallone slowly walked up to his body after shooting him. Any proper director wouldn’t have focused on Jet Li looking down on the ground away from the other two actors looking confused and akward. It should have been a longshot showing Stallone from afar walking up to his body and theres loads of that throughout the movie.
Speaking of the plot-holes, one immedietley comes to mind is where Jet Li and Stallone are ambushed in their truck and Jet Li randomly pulls out a sub-machine gun when the other guys break to reload. I mean if they just bothered a bit more and explained/fleshed out the film a bit more I really do think this would have been a classic.
Though despite all its problems it comes with some pretty funny lines, a very nostalgic cast and some very awesome action scenes. Giving credit to the team who made the film, they atleast understand action.
However I just felt the script could have been more fleshed out to make each scene more amazing since as it was it was just an onsalught of nostalgic action stars maiming bitches up. Though I was fairly amused watching it, it’ll probably be only a one time watch for me.
ahh arnold said bs about my country, so I’m gonna download it instead of giving money to this son of a bitch
Yeah, the general’s daughter “achieved” all that without firing a single bullet, because he had all the guys fire for her. She’d done jack shit without them. She was so annoying.
dude, i live in California and i love the fact that Arnold is in this movie, he should have the time off of being the govenator and be in a movie.
This movie is AWESOME and i love the scene with the AA-12 shotgun, the dude didn’t have to reload until exactly 72 shots (yes i counted the second time i saw this movie, and in the movie he fired a total of 108 shots or 118 shots if i am mistaken
This movie is unamerican. It is by the way that he stole the script from someone and wasnt going to put his name in the credits until he got sued for it. And then change lines that just so he thought that he could make the movie his. And the plot isnt his the movie isnt his it all belongs to or should belong to the person who gave the script to stallone before he changed the words to make it his own. And the movie is all about going back to the other country to get the girl well she dont even screw him. UN AMERICAN! but take (ALOT) all that aside good movie
You should like a bumbling fucking idiot. No one knows what you’re talking about. Go away.
Wow are you serious dude stfu
by the way what i hate about this film is that they didnt fuck that girl. thats just unamerican. going over to another country to get this girl without screwing her. UNBELIEVABLE
F*ck you racist.
Terry’s gun is called the AA-12. Look it up
FINALLY someone that understands the meaning of this movie. I saw other reviews and it just felt like they didn’t understand the meaning and the nostalgia of what the movie brings. I feel that some perhaps have lost touch. I feel that people perhaps got spoiled with The Dark Knight and perhaps expect every movie to be somewhere around that within storyline that is blatant obvious.
Just seen it with the wife.. i liked the movie.. altought it kinda made me think of the A-Team.. but then beter.
I guess you could say, if you liked Arnold Sqartzinegr’s “Commando” you’d deffinately like this movie. I look forward to seeing it.
end part made me piss myself laughing
Im really really really sorry Joe, but i really did not like this film. It gave me a headache maybe about halfway through.
You should really check inside your underwear, you might be missing something important.
watch this

lawl, great review joe!!! xD you put your heart into this lawl
at the end of the credits you asked what kind of gun Crews was using, i believe its an AA12 automatic shotgun.
I happened to come across this little article on the simple fact that Expendables is a Man Movie. Which is something we rarely see these days.
http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Fathers-Don-t-Let-Your-Sons-Grow-Up-Without-The-Expendables-20065.html
I personally thought Expendables was somewhere between “meh” and bad and I’m still waiting for the Scott Pilgrim review
Angry Joe, You have a way about you, that makes everything Awesome. I want to call you Awesome
Joe. To be honest, I was really disuaded by all the negative reviews, and although deep down I felt it’d be good anyway, I wasn’t able to afford to double feature this with Scott Pilgrim for me and my sister and brother, I did however get to see Scott Pilgrim and I really enjoyed it.
Seeing this review, I wish I had somehow made my way to see the expendibles as well, I may next week depending, I really really enjoy this kind of movie, and well I don’t see how any guys really can. The fact that I saw quite a few look down on it was a bit of a decision maker for my siblings, but after seeing this, I hope I get to see it, if not in theaters on dvd. Sounds like it’s a kickass popcorn movie.
and it seems like The Expendibles have done really well this last weekend, and Scott Pilgrim is kinda down.
But for Scott Pilgrim’s sake, for those who haven’t seen it, if you’re a fan of videogames, comics, or just plain nerdery and really fun movies, I really encourage you to watch it, I loved it, and would give it a second look in theaters if I didn’t plan on seeing The Expendibles if I get some money and time next lol.
Lol, I meant, I don’t see how any guys can not like this movie*
I was gonna like this film no matter what when i herd the words Willis, Stalone and ARNIE!!! JOE u r the man
I totally agree with Joe, and I did make Saturday a Double Feature to see Expendables and Scott Pilgrim. I hope Angry Joe does a review of Scott Pilgrim. As for Expendables, I TOTALLY AGREE that the bad guys needed more heavy hitters. I mean Stone Cold is awesome, and was realistic that he can kick Sly’s ass, but to go up again all of them? Eric Roberts doesn’t count, he was just always the same douche he has been in in other movies he’s in. I also wish Ralph Lundgrim.. hahaa Dolph had a punch it out fight scene with Sly, that would have rocked. I didn’t expect a “Inception” like plot. I expected ACTION!
So I’d also give it an 8. I suppose if you don’t care for action movies, you’ll give it a bad review, but it you love them, there is no way you aren’t going to enjoy this movie.
i know that joe knows badassery when he sees it, keep it up joe
I’m yet to see this movie but im sure its great, looks like my kinda thing. Oh and Joe, Could you consider doing a review on that Piranha 3D movie? Looks like Jaws…but with Piranhas… -.-
yeah apparently Arnold wanted a smaller role in the film he was gonna be on the team but he wanted the smaller role due to his political career.
I saw this review Monday and went immediately to go see it and Angry Joe you were absolutely correct sir!
I have to report that the rumor mill is saying that their are plans for a sequel that will look into the other team headed by Arnold Schwarzenegger that was mentioned in the film.
SIR! As a soldier in the British division of the Angry Joe army I shall immediately go and see the film then report back to you SIR!
Joes … go get some nice tan bro. You look sick!
Joe, the sad truth is that The Expendables is ACTUALLY doing better in the box office then Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. If you’ve seen Scott Pilgrim yet, I’m looking forward to a review of it from you.
this review was awesome. joe’s the best! ;p
i loved that movie!!! so much blood and action, evarything i hoped for :]
an that gun is a AA-12, automatic shotgun
The gun is the AA-12, the most bad-ass shotgun ever. I fell in love with it years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4ebtj1jR7c
Spoony wasn’t as kind to this movie as you were. As a matter of fact, many things he say as shortcomings were positive things for you. I’m pretty torn about the reviews and the overall split impressions being left on people. I’m leaning towards giving this a rental, but I haven’t made up my mind yet.
I saw Scott Pilgrim Saturday night, and I wasn’t too impressed with it. Too much flashy graphics, in-joke references and gay jokes for my taste. I like video games a lot, but the references only got some smirks out of me. I also have an avid hatred for anime, so I was able to see the inspirations for that too, unfortunately. It was a mixed bag that was all style and a tad self-absorbed.
I’m definitely going to have my mind blown with TNT, but I’m iffy on Scott Pilgrim. I don’t know what it is, but there’s just an air of…. Again, don’t know.
i loved this movie so much. it had proposterous amounts of tustosterone proposterone in it. by the end of the movie i wanted to just start karate choping thing. it was amazing just the kind of action movie we need now. going back to the 80s style of movie that just have the plot to give you the action you crave for. definitely one of the best movies out there. im not going to compare it to inception because that was a masterpiece in both the story the way its told the suspence the amount of action and how it all comes together. and thats most chritics are probably doing. it was amazing but i think that i would rather see expendables again. because it goes back to how action moves are suposed to be. with a storyu thats there just to put the heros “in the SHIT”. it shows us how action movies are suposed to be by going back to its roots. and it was amazing. so much awesome thrown into a move with this kind of a star studed cast could of easly gone down the tubes but it didnt and is awesome.
