The Other Guys is wasted potential for an otherwise interesting team up of Mark Walberg & Will Ferrell. Its one of those films where most of the funny jokes are given away in the trailer.
What you’ll Like:
• There are maybe 3-4 good laughs throughout this mess.
• The Leads put in an entertaining performance in the 1st act.
• Eva Mendes is Hot when she wasn’t being annoying.
• Best Part: Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson and the crazy STUPID (in a good way) situations they were in for 15 minutes at the beginning of the film.
The WORST Action Climax scene in a while
What you’ll Hate:
• So many more jokes fail than succeed, and FAIL HARD – painfully annoying.
• The plot is aimless and lasts far too long.
• The Climax Action scene was extremely disappointing and beyond suspension of disbelief.
• The Supporting Cast.
• Eva Mendes is annoying when she isn’t being hot.
• Worst Part: Tie between Eva Mendes Singing and the Stupid Grandma as an in-between messenger for dirty talk joke.
Final Verdict:
4/10

I believe this reviewer has a personal vendetta against Will ferral or Mark Wahlberg. This film was hilarious. And I’m not some frat boy who thought Meet the fockers or American wedding was funny either. I’m a comedian at South laff house. We know comedy. Will ferrel KNOWS comedy. And he did an excellent job with this film.
I think it’s safe to say that anyone who believes Expandables deserved above a 5 doesn’t really have a lot to say about movie reviews. Also MVc3 is bare basic? Not to sound barbaric, but until you can beat me or anytone I know in the game even one time out of a hundred, I’d refrain from saying too many more stupid things

I think ill download it… hmmm maybe not even worth downloading.
From what i have seen so far it wasnt very funny.. then again iam not a american or canadian either.
So yeah it would be in the end a little annoying for me to.. maybe i dont get all the nice jokes there.
Although i get most of the jokes in Monthy phyton life of brain.. anyone remembers that one?
I thought that was pure genious in all to bad i dont see much of that type of movies anymore..

The Other Guys is just an “alright,” flick. If you go in without expecting much, it actually can be an enjoyable experience to any audience. I would give it an average score myself.

I didn’t really see much in the trailers that made me want to watch it. Off the strength of Will Ferrel I’ll rent it, but I must say 8/10 for G.I. Joe is extremely generous. I was a huge fan of the cartoon as a kid and owned so many of the toys it was ridiculous, but that movie was pretty horrible. It had some pretty cool effects, but the actors in that movie are so bad and appear to have given the worst performance they possibly could. That movie deserves a 5/10 at best for good effects. The story and chemistry were non existent. I hope this movie is decent enough to spend time watching.

I agree with JoeGetty, and might i add that THIS IS A WILL FERREL MOVIE. Jokes will be almost driven to death but thats his appeal, he complains repeatedly and his character in this movie IS MEANT TO BE ANNOYING. You obviously have seen other will ferrel movies, so you know what you’re getting into, YET YOU COMPLAIN WHEN WILL FERREL IS BEING WILL FERREL. I implore EVERYONE who watched this review to go look up the REAL REVIEWERS. Go to rottentomatoes.com and look up some REAL REVIEWS, and base your opinions off them, but dont listen to angryjoe on this one, (as much as it pains me to say). Yes, this movie is stupid, but the gut bustingly hilarious Will Ferrel kind of stupid, and if you dont like Will Ferrel DONT SEE THE FUCKING MOVIE.

I disagree completley. The Samuel L Jackson and Rock jokes were not funny at all, they werent clever and were more of a parody of the shitty buddy cop movies like Rush Hour and whatnot. Will Ferrel and Mark Whalberg were absolutley hilarious, now i was not a fan of the plot or serious characters but this movie is a comedy; its just supposed to make you laugh. Animal House and Caddyshack didnt have great plots either, and both of those movies were hilarious. I guess whether you laughed or not was subjective but you cant be taken seriously if you complain about the “aimless plot” and the action scenes in a comedy. If this movie wasn’t funny i would be more inclined to agree with you, but in The Other Guys I laughed harder than i ever have in a movie this year, and possibly last year. And since this movie is a comedy it succeded where it needed to.

I love your work Joe, but I’m gonna have to disagree with this review as well. I’m not going to say it was the funniest movie I’ve ever seen, but I would definitely say it was entertaining overall.
I do agree that it would have been much better if Sam Jackson and Dwayne Johnson were the rival cops for most of the movie (though the way they got rid of them was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen). Also, you’re right in that there were quite a few jokes that were pretty lame (the repeated bribe scene, the exploding office and the classroom scene to name a few). And I thought the overall plot was meh (I predicted who the mystery client was going to be halfway into the movie).
But I managed to find a lot of enjoyable moments in the movie, myself. The scene where they were parked in the car and Ferrell’s ex girlfriend and her husband come running after them was so random it was hysterical (“Is that them?! We drove like 20 miles!”) Or the tuna vs lion bit was pretty damn funny. It’s true that there were only a handful of really intense laugh out loud moments for me, but I also felt there were plenty of smaller laughs and enjoyable moments spread throughout the film. I wouldn’t rank it up there with some of my favorite comedies, but I personally thought it was an above average film. I would rate it at least 6 out of 10 myself.

I will agree, there were a large amount of jokes that i found annoying, but that’s just my taste in humor. There were times in the movie where i was the only one laughing and there were times where everyone else the in the theater was laughing except me, it’s all personal taste and I think that’s why this movie worked. It made everyone laugh not just me or you. Everyone came out of the theater talking about their favorite jokes and they were each different. I will just say that I love your stuff Joe but i think it’s a little unfair to judge how funny a movie is based on your tastes, when it might appeal to others.
Also, this movie was made as a buddy-cop spoof, not a buddy cop movie. I honestly didn’t care about Marky Mark’s GF and i felt that scene was unnecessary. But your criticizing a satire for not making sense, it’s not really suppost to. The laughs come from realizing that in actual buddy-cop movies the romances never make sense, it’s like how Airplane was a direct spoof of Zero Hour, nothing makes sense in airplane but it’s even funnier if you’ve seen Zero Hour because it’s the same exact situation and you realize how dumb an idea it was to put into a serious film.
Which is the same reason that ridiculous action scene was funny, it was the same exact kind of crap legit buddy cop movies pull and it makes you realize how funny it actually is.
Now I’m just rambling about stuff because i legitimately enjoyed this movie and i feel like your too harsh on it for what it is. I’d say its a must-rent movie to be honest.

Ok, I do agree on some parts of the movie, but I think I just turned my brain off and tried to enjoy what funny money was in this thing. And yeah looking back, there are a lot of stupid moments, like that climax gun fight.
And I really hated that the took out Sam Jackson and The Rock in this movie

Will farrel needs to do childrens movies, he keeps making movies that have child whit, and adult innuendo’s. ive seen lots of his movies and all of them scream out to me and say ‘this is a disney movie with a adult theme!’ or something like that.
and I wish someone would get the rock in a decent action movie already without all the kiddy stuff, i know he been in a couple of decent movie’s so far.
And who here thinks it would be awesome if Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock teamed up for a action movie? I know to me that sounds like fun =)

As a film critic myself I actually found this one very frustrating to review.
On one hand it does have some really funny parts. Mark Wahlberg is a good straight man and plays well off of Farrel’s craziness. The whole Lion/Tuna scene was quite funny, the “AMERICA!!” scene was hilarious, the jumper scene was funny, and all 7 minutes of The Rock and Samuel L Jackson was funny.
But where my problem lies is in the overly long scenes that try to hammer in a joke that no matter how much they hammer in isn’t funny. The bum orgy isn’t funny. Will Farrel as a pimp is not funny (and downright disturbing at parts) and the ballet scene wasn’t funny. It was like for every funny scene there was an awkward scene that tried to be funny but wasn’t.
I had low expectations for this movie because I believe Will Farrel is overused and has trouble doing anything other than over the top comedy like the previous films he’s done with this director.
I thought it was okay though. It was legitimately funny in some parts and compared to a lot of the comedies out there right now it was pretty good but I agree that it was at best average as a film itself.
I don’t expect you, as the busy man you are, to respond but I did feel the need to comment and let you know my opinion.

Was actually surprised by your review. I too had seen the usual suspect critics and they all loved it. I never really had huge hopes for this lil number. Was likely going to wait until it came out to DVD or made it to the movies channels. Is it decent enough a watch there or is it not even worth the electricty in the battery power needed in my remote to turn to a chanel showing it?
Nice music choice for your sound bed. Is that going to be a constant or just a one off?

Joe you hit the nail on the head with the supporting cast thing. NOT ONLY was he paired up with “Marky” Mark Wahlberg, but the first 20 minutes featured Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock (In the sort of role he does really well not a bloody tooth fairy GAH!) who stole the show from the beginning. Leaving the rest of the movie feeling kinda dry.

On make scale you could argue “Okay” is “Average” which would be a 5/10. I rated this a 4/10 slightly below that for going too far ruining otherwise good jokes and being too long.

I will agree with you that I did laugh out loud a few times, but the plentiful jokes that went way too far were just painful – the 2nd and 3rd acts of this movie made me hate the whole thing. The resolution was retarded.
Let me ask you HOW in the HELL Holtz (Marky marks) character ends up back with his girlfriend EVEN MARRYING her out of no where, it just one example of how this thing was thrown together towards the end.
I guarantee you that there is SO much cut out of this movie. Its boring with a few jokes and ends up barely making sense. Its not one of will ferrells best.

I am very grateful that you gave a reply to my statement , but as I said I am a hardcore Will Ferrel fan and I enjoy all of his movies no matter how strange they may be. Also about how Mark Wahlberg gets back with his girlfriend, yes it is very scattered and messed up but that is what I found funny about it, because it is just a funny yet confusing movie that I enjoy.
Also I understand why you and probably many other people dislike the movie, and yes I do understand that this movie does not live up to other Will Ferrel movies like Anchorman.
So just in conclusion I want to say thank you for giving a reply to my comment and I want to say thank you for your opinion on the movie, but I probably will go see it with my friends another time or just by the dvd.
