Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor First Look!
YES! Steel Battalion! That game with the huge custom controller is back! Now without a controller at all!
…wait WHAT?
From the Official Press Release:
Steel Battalion Heavy Armor was officially announced by Keiji Inafune, Capcom’s Head of R&D Management Group and Contents Management Division, earlier today to an audience of media from across the globe at Microsoft’s Tokyo Game Show Keynote Address. “The announcement of Steel Battalion Heavy Armor is further testament to Capcom’s commitment to produce innovative titles that take advantage of the latest technology”, commented Keiji Inafune. “With Kinect’s ability to track your joints and movements and understand where the player is in 3D space and the development expertise of From Software in partnership with Capcom’s own personnel, we are confident of delivering a truly immersive experience for Xbox 360 gamers.”
“We are thrilled to once again work with our partners at Capcom and From Software to develop exclusive, innovative titles,” said Matt Barlow, General Manager, Interactive Entertainment Business Marketing for Microsoft. “It’s exciting to see publishers evolve renowned franchises like ‘Steel Battalion’ with Kinect to create gameplay that you can only experience on Xbox 360.”
Set in 2082, Steel Battalion Heavy Armor depicts a world devoid of computers, where war is waged with rudimentary weapons as new superpowers struggle for dominance. In a twist of fate, the US army has been forced to begin major landing operations on what was once its own soil. In this low-tech era there is one weapon class that will determine the course of the war – the Vertical Tank. VTs are guaranteed to instil fear in enemy forces when they burst onto the battlefield; but they are nothing without the crews who man them. Lacking computer aided weapon and piloting systems, these brave men and women must now rely on skill, intuition and each other to ensure victory.
So what do you think this new Kinect title will play like? Will it use a Minority Report UI or something closer to Joe’s Robot Dance as an On-Rails Shooter? Does this make you more excited about the possibilities of Kinect? Leave a Comment!

Hey Joe, I’m surprised that you never reviewed Transformers: War for Cybertron. It’s a surprisingly good game that seems right up your alley
No obnoxiously expensive controller?!
Games limited to the new Kinect to our 360.
Shake head in frustration. That’s what Nintendo is for. I like to sit back in the coach, with a controller in one hand, a bowl with potato chips, possible something to drink and the occasional vibration in my hands. Ho ho!
heh! I mean look if, Kinect would add the same vibration to us in whole, like whenever we receive a hit, we would feel a small pinch that we’re actually involved in this battle. But that is of course my own imagination of what could’ve made the motion control even better.
Nevertheless great review AJ. I may have heard of this title before, but never seen it, other than from that small youtube video. It looks good, but the amount of games coming out this fall and next spring is just way to many. You need to think about not spending all your money on games as well. Haha!
Anyway, will be looking forwards for more reviews man.
The whole scheme sounds ridiculous to me. You could have had this badass set-up with a massive controller that had joysticks and peddles and buttons and toggle switches for everything up to and including switching the windshield wipers on and off, and you go and instead decide to revolve the game’s controls around miming. It’s the sort of decision that has “doomed to fail” floating over it in bright neon letters that are visible from a quarter-mile away.
Now, the problem with the previous game was that $200 for a game and a controller that only worked with that one game was asking a bit much. However, that’s not really as much of a problem these days, since DLC is an option. Getting people to buy the game would be a whole lot easier if it included some of the basic staples of current-gen gaming (A decently-long single-player campaign, some solid multiplayer, mech customization, and so-forth) as well as the promise of some inexpensive or even free DLC down the line. Likewise, getting some other development teams working on games based in the same engine and using the same controller could really give some longer legs to the entire purchase.
I really want to play the original Steel Battalion. That truly is crap about the new one and Kinect, but personally I’m still shiting bricks over the MechWarrior V announcement.
HOLY SHAT! I WANNA HEAR JOE YODEL! HAHAHAHA
Sounds this game will $uck, you are telling me that you pass from a masive control to no-control that´s crazy talk. I hate Kinect, I have to move things while Im playing video games, if I want to move my body I go to play basketball. ALso what about the story, Im sorry Joe I dont feel Im going to rush to the store to buy this. It will be just another sequel.
[Also about those people saying "Oh I dont like you bleeps, your show sucks," they have no idea, keep doing the things you do Joe, see ya]
That’s right, i have no idea.
Please, explain it to me, and maybe i’ll change my mind.
(Still, prejudice is evil nonetheless.)
Oh, and by the way this is the best show on the whole fucking Internet!
It’s just the beeping i hate.
when you said no conntroller i punch my desk 5 times
also joe….. HOW DO I GET THIS GAME FOR CHEAP???? I AM GOING CRAZY FOR ONE. the new ones i found on amazon were like 600-700 dollars. no way i could get that kind of cash without stealing from a bank.
the first steel battalion, not heavy armor….. unless kinnect will beam a tv into my brain im not taking it on that
here is an idea: MAKE THE CONTROLLER WITH THE GAME!!!!!!!! but have the kinect optional this way we can have the acrcade style to the new gen style
While the Steel Battalion controller looked neat, I would never pay $200 for a piece hardware that could only be used for one game. I would put my cash to better use. That’s just me.
Using the Kinect as the new “controller” sounds really stupid. Like you demonstrated, Joe, how the hell can you implement a game like this for the Kinect?
On another note, everything I’ve seen from the Kinect does not look good to me. I’m already burnt out on gimmicky motion controllers from the Wii. I don’t like waving my hands around like an idiot to play a video game. It always feels imprecise and awkward. Now I can wave my arms around without a piece of plastic in my hand! Hooray! Maybe I’m too old.
Neither the Kinect nor the Move have changed my mind. As of now, I’m not purchasing either one.
I ate a banana while watching this!
Best dance of all time??? I think so.
As for the game if ti doesn’t use the original controller that would be stupid. $200 bucks for a controller for one game, then you have to buy the Kinect to play the next one. How much money do they want you to spend on there game. You should just get a ps3 Joe!!
i think he already does he just uses xbox more often
Sounds like a great game. I’d take a look at it if they confirm that there will be a controller option
instead of just kniect (I’m staying away from it as far as humanly possible.)
After watching the trailer for the first time, my words were “Where the fuck is my next gen giant controller?”
THE HORROR!!!
Steel Battalion without the controller will be Steel Battalion in name alone.
They should let the name rest in the loving memory of the lucky few ones that played and enjoyed it.
WTF has FROM Software to do with SB???They should release a successor to Chromehounds, which was the poor man’s Steel Battalion, but a good game in its own right. That game took all the gameplay and online campaign elements from Steel Battalion and offered a more accessible experience than the utra hardcore SB.
I’m gonna guess that your parody idea of how it will control might be right on the money. Otherwise, expect to do the robot a lot. If the kinect had sharper control I might have more faith but no way am I tossing 150 bucks just so I can the pay 60 to get my steel fix (hell for that price I could probably get an unopened original game plus the sequel.
Hehe its a joe in the box…why is nobody laughing?
20$ says its fail
I bought the Steal Battalion about a year after its release. The clerk at Gamestop told me one thing. “Never Return This Box.” To this day I still have yet to learn what he meant. Kick ass game.
hopefully they will at least let you use the regular controlers as an option…. or else it probably will suck
A fully working virtual dashboard with an “inside mech” view would be awesome!
It is doubtful though since Natal (I refuse to call it Kinect because it’s a STUPID name) can’t detect the body properly enough for the player to be switching all those buttons on and off (either that or they will “decrease” the dashboard to a big ass ‘FIRE!” button and two levers… oh god) .
Sadly it is quite possible that the game will be controlled the same way as Joe showed (the “making a total douche out of yourself” way) and thus it will be terrible experience for anyone who realises how FRIGGIN STUPID they look…
But hey maybe the developers are magicians and they can actually make the minority report stuff work! Who knows!?
As for the original Steel Batalion, I heard about it (I think) but never played it. Now that I hear about the big ass controller I WANT IT but it was probably never available outside USA (or at least not available in Poland)… oh well
. Must have been awesome.
I hope they would have at lease have on-screen buttons for us to know. I know I would not like to swing my arms around just to pilot a giant-robot.
looks pretty cool
I never played steel battalion but that looks really immersive (the old one with the insane controller). Was probably a cool game.
I like your on screen idea but I dont know, i dont think theyre gonna do that. I suspect it will be about as lame as everything else coming out for kinect. Motion Controls, so far, are not my thing. I find myself not caring for that gimmick. If they did start going the route of minority report I would start to get interested I think.
Anyway, cool. A game I never heard of. Always nice to learn something new.
I predict badness.
Like Turning Point: Fall of Liberty bad.
It’s going to be bad.
Thanks for making me LOL uncontrollably on my birthday. Gracias senior.
I always wanted but could never afford Steel Battalion…. And I sure as hell am not going to buy a Kinect to play a dumbed down version of the game without that awesome controller.
Hey Joe, can you please link me to the music you usually use when you show a game’s cover in your reviews? It’s so catchy!
Well to be fair from what i’ve seen it just says “Kinect Enabled” Which could mean, it’s just enhanced by the Kinect.
Honestly though i buy video games for escapism and to relax after a hard day at work, It’s why i didn’t buy the Eye Toy, The Wii And why i won’t be forking out for a Kinect… I’m not gunna sit in my living room waving my arms around like a tosser in my free time.
HOWEVER if iit does indeed come with a sweet ass controller like the last one You’re damn right i’ll get it! Throw in some chromehounds style Mech Customization and Multiplayer and you’re well on your way to the best game on the console in my book….
I don’t see it happening though, chances are it’ll be a shite series of mech based mini games ¬_¬
I bought Steel Battalion when it came out. It was like being that one kid on the neighborhood who has a Super Nintendo before anyone else did, except among friends. It was the subject of discussion and awe for a while. I don’t regret purchasing the thing at all, I played the game to death and it was like nothing I had ever experienced before – even from an arcade. I’d love to see another game like that – a mech sim with an equally complex controller. These days paying 150 bucks for a game and controller isn’t some niche thing with all the rhythm games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero, so I think if they released something like Steel Battalion with controller again, it would be moderately successful. Maybe.
Hey Joe, which controller did you get? The original green button controller or the re-issued blue button one? I got the original green button controller myself. I was one of the early adopters!
Quick question why do you bleep out some of the curses, but not others. I heard you say fuck but then bleeped out your other fuck and then bleeped shit. Leave em all in I say.
I think it’s just “percision F-bombing” He censors himself until he really wants to get a point across.
Maybe the new Steel Batallion will also have voice commands for controls. That would be pretty epic.
Power On
Vent heat exhausts
Online Heavy Bolters
Nightvision on
Walk north 2 clicks
Lock Mech 5
FIRE!
I won’t get my hopes up though as said above it will probably be on rails.
Man, i really miss the mech-games.
But i have no expectations for the Kinect-Version of the game.
THIS GAME IS GONNA FAIL. KINEKT SUCKS BALLS.
[...] (via AngryJoeShow) [...]
Bwahahaha, “beeeep boo bee bee beep booo” “THATS HOW WERE GOING TO F**KING CONTROL THE GAME!?!?!” omg, i nearly shat myself with laughter
Not anything against you, Joe, but why do people keep referencing Minority Report when talking about the Kinect? The guy us clearly using a pair of Power Gloves to move all that BS on the monitor. And we all know that the Power Glove is “so baaaad.”
This game is going to blow and sink like a mech in the Great Lakes…
Just as I hope the Kinect does too !!
From the given background information(no computers) i’m think this is going to be a very bad on the rails shooter. The minority report virtual console would be awesome for a game like this, but it wouldn’t make sense in context for them to be there.
I never owned the original Steel Battalion, but I couldn’t afford it when it came out, and couldn’t find it by the time I could afford it. The original looked awesome, but if they are trying to cash in on a series to make money off of, Steel Battalion is the wrong series. I’m betting most people haven’t heard of Steel Battalion or never cared about it originally, and people that did love the original aren’t going to willing buy this one(sorry Joe, you have a moral and professional obligation to play this game for me and tell me how much it sucks) because they are too busy crying “Sacrilege!!” over the lack of controller and most likely simplified motion aim and shoot style game play.
If they are smart, I think a Minority Report-ish UI is exactly what they should do. For a game like Steel Battalion, you are meant to feel like the pilot of an advanced war-machine, not like you ARE a giant robot, that would change the feel of the game entirely. People want to feel like badass Gundam (or insert favorite mecha here) pilots, not like big, clunky super-robots like Gigantor or whatever that one was from Fallout 3.
Hopefully, that’s the route they’ll go, if they haven’t lost all their senses. The kinect actually sounded like an improved motion control system until I found out it doesn’t pick up black, which is like… HALF my wardrobe.
Honestly, Joe, could you imagine watching, say, Full Metal Jacket with constant beeping? NO! Of course not! It would totally destroy the film! And that’s what it’s doing to your show! PLEASE, stop it!
Wait, still no DmC first look? Im a bit dissapoint, I expected you to be all over it.
As for Steel batalion, I kinda wish they re-use the custom controller, but Im interested in how this is going to work with Kinect.
Why are you censoring bad language now?
Btw you missed some fucks.
he’s always bleeped some of his words. He does it for humor value since sometimes its funnier to hear the word and sometime its funnier to bleep it out.
“Humor”?!
Honestly, there’s nothing funny about prejudice!
I bought Steel Battalion used for 80 bucks! wasn’t even opened. The controller is badass and the game was pretty cool too, although I never got past the 4th level. What sucks is my 5th gear doesn’t work
Your controller impression together with the yodeling made me laugh so loud that I had an unpleasent talk with my boss about doing work during work time afterwards :/
i love mech based games.
both the clunky tank types like in the mechwarriors series and the high speed action from zone of enders series, love’em all.
Sounds the typical storyline for a From Software mech game. Doesn’t sound quite as offbeat as Metal Wolf Chaos, though. “RICHAAAAARRRRRD!”
I miss the old mech games sooo much! It sucks that all we get these days are third person action shooters with simple controls. Will we ever get a game that is an actual mech SIMULATOR with complex controls. I sure hope so, but with this using Kinect I don’t see anything complex happening.
I bought the controller plus both games for about 150 and I had a blast with it! The start up for your mech alone makes me happy so much at the detail!
But When I heard it was gonna use kinect, I nearly went ape shit!! I think the only reason mech fans bought the game WAS for the controller! No controller, no game! So I hope that they come out with at least a 20 button controller, yes we lose about half of the original but its one none the less.
Given how badly the Kinect is expected to sell, it won’t be the start of anything.
Mech combat is dead again thanks to Kinect, thanks Xbox 360 marketing.
