Personally, I think the whole rating system is ridiculous. I believe in the concept of “different games for different people, and the rating system messes all that up. It strips your opinions down to its vital signs, and tells you what to think. Also, when you give products a rating then people tend to compare things that can not be compared. Eventually, people will be like “so Red Dead Redemption IS better then Super Meat Boy…” or “and I say, Dead Rising 2 IS better then Forrest Gump!” People compare the taste of an apple to the weight of a cyder block. In my humble opinion, the rating system is flawed and could easily be replaced with a collection of medals that don’t interfere with your opinions, just state the facts. A series of phrases like “ONLY FOUR HOURS!” , or “3 dimensional characters” and “high production quality” i think would be a reasonable substitute for the current number based system.
i’m interested in seeing content related to the history of video games, kind of like gametrailers’ retrospective series or retro ware’s the gaming historian. I agree with LordVahn about translating articles and captions for non english speakers, but I must admit that’s going to be a lot of work!
I think that the 1-10 system is good but personally i would expand it with a “seal system”.
Like the “badass seal” other seal of approval or disapproval should be used to highlight some significant pro or problems of a game.
I, personally, think that a site wide rating system is unnecessary. plenty of websites have this and it boils the choice down to a number for quick reviewing. I believe that if two or three reviewers use their own criteria to judge a game, it makes the consumer stop and find out more about a game and the criteria that it was judged on. This, I believe leads to a more informed consumer. why be like the others and boil it down to an average of a rigid formula. Gamers are diverse in taste. Why shouldn’t the site cater to the nuances in the tastes of gamers?
First I’d like to say I’m really happy you guys get your own site to yourselfs and really look forward to what you guys give out. for the review system I’d agree with you joe stay with the 1-10 scale with five being avreage. I’d say keep the keep the easy to navigate so if your looking for review it in one section and easy to spot. But adding in other things like game based movie I think would be intresting and a good idea a maybe doing a sesonal thing like the Critic and his Nosaglia-ween and the Nerd and his Monster Madness, if you haven’t seen it look it up at his site, but still I think you guys have a lot to bring and I hope you also keep this site open to as too. good luck joe…just when Marvel vs.Capcom 3 come out I want first dips on challengeing you to a fight!!!
I was thinking of a rating system of Buy, Rent, or Pass. Your good games like 10/10 to 7/10 could scale from a MUST Buy to a good buy and so on, cause in the end you do have to know your reviewer and his/her likes and dislikes to really know were your tastes lie. That way you remove the number system completely and make it like it was when you were a kid, taking a friends opinion to make your own decision. The website stories could be broken up into Business and Play. The Play side would be were the release dates, gameplay details/changes, and reviews could be. The Business side could be were you go to get serious like talks of what developers say about the innovation in Japanese games or in depth decisions like the effects of violence Movies more than Games. I know whatever you guys decide will be good and I hope we as a community give you great ideas. Thanks.
What i want to see in blisterd thumbs is not the leveled head joe, but still when its crappy game i wanna see the dissapointment in there.
Also good idea for the 0-10 point system and no decimal signs in there like you said in the vid.
7 should be above avarage and also 0 should be a score to get for a game.
Like its not even worth buying or downloading.
Then i would like to see the top10 for last months game and worsed (divided up in pc/console)
and then since were hitting the 2011 point the last years top 10 greatest and worsed pc/console game.
Please dont hold back joe. that is why i like your reviews.
And cool that people can vote for it. for best and worsed games out there.
For the gaming rules nd laws out there like DRM etc should go in both reviews because they are affecting the gaming experience. look at battlenet for the lag issue’s etc. so keep em in there.
And also its good to go further in that discussion sepreratly because it has alot to say about it.
Maybe the gaming community can do some suggestions how to get rid of this and give the game industry a alternativ so everyone is happy with the solution. i know the has money to be made. but not at all costs. But anough said about this. i hope you like my idea’s here and good luck on that blisterd thumbs. dont get rid of your angry joe site though. never know when you need it again to give you your mind on surten reviews.
What would be nive to see on the site… hmm… well, a forum would be nice, if not that, atleast something like a list for game recomendations to wich the members can add games of course.
Your show it´s awesome Joe. Keep the god work. Grettings from Ecuador. My wife and I love your reviews… And this new site its gona be excelent. The first site that care for us, the final costumers. Buena suerte joe
I registered just to say this: Let the ratings system use decimals! That way the whole number can be a definitive review while the decimals can be based on personal merits. There would probably have to be an over-the-top 11 rating but that an be worked out somehow.
Take Final Fantasy 7 for example: for some it was a golden unicorn, the best of the best. If the reviewer feels that it deserves a 10 with a personal merit of 1 whole point, they can give it an 11.
(sorry for the double post, but I remembered something, and there’s no “edit” button )
Another way of contributing to the site would be to get a team of colaborators to transtale the articles into some other languages (the ones you guys should be looking for first would be spanish, portuguese, french, and german) and also include captions in your videos. I myself can enjoy the site b/c I’ve been working for 5 years using english as my main “encoding” if you like, but there are a lot of people out there, that I know could really enjoy your reviews if they had captions, b/c they really can’t even translate the “angry” part in your name (and no…google translate/bable fish wouldn’t cut it…the AI of those is that of the duck in Duck Hunt)
I’d like to be a part of this new website’s team. the only issue I see is that I live in Argentina, and don’t have any consoles, just my good ol’ PC. Anyways, I think it would be nice if I could give it a try sounds like an awesome project to concentrate the gaming community on a site that really cares about gamers and not the companies that make or publish them.
Kickoff reason is Average works better on an odd number, but you need to have an equal spectrum on both sides. 3 is too simplified obviously, 5 has already been done and still doesn’t offer the depth necessary, and both 9 and 11, while workable, are so close to the 10 Number system that viewers are unlikely to actually distinguish.
A benefit of 15 whole numbers, besides having a middle number for a perfectly average item, is it allows you to add a bit more depth without going up to the extreme of 20 different degrees of quality that both decimals and half-numbers essentially are. It would be a 3 category system with 5 varying degrees for each, with items 11 and above being good, items 6-10 being in average-ish territory, and items 5 and below being bad. So essentially it’d be 3 distinct types, each with 5 different degrees
One thing I would like to add is that while 13 numbers is also an option, it also has the stigma associated with being unlucky. Plus it would mean 7 was an average game which is taboo.
I’ve mentioned this site and blistered thumbs in general to mates (even hardcore gamers) who shrug and don’t give a crap (poor fools) but this has the potential to be freaking huge and change that. We’re talking a people’s IGN, a soviet PCGAMER, whatever you want to call it. Yeah it’ll take time and the community jumping onboard like I’m pretty damn sure we will but it has that goal as a really strong possibility. The idea of blog promotions is sweet. Competitions? Wonderful. Articles and opinion pieces? Superb. And yeah, lets get a system of ranking that works, skip the bullshit and remove the elitism that exists out there with disdain being launched at any game that doesn’t make the 9.0. Seven isn’t average!
Show the suits how its done BT.
But don’t worry Joe, still gonna whore your own place out to every damn gamer I know. Viva el ejercito enojado! A
Love the reviews! Even though I don’t have a next gen system like Xbox 360 or PS3, I do enjoy watching your reviews not only as entertainment but for future reference as when I do get those systems, I’ll have a better idea of what to get and what to avoid.
Since I don’t have the newer systems (a PS2 was my last purchase a year and a half ago) I really don’t feel qualified to comment on how games should be rated. But I do have a request for the channel’s content.
Being 40, I remember the days before home gaming really took off and Arcade gaming was THE place to be on a Saturday. I remember many times at the Putt-Putt with a pocketful of quarters playing Midway Battle of ’43, or Rolling Thunder. I fondly remember putting my quarters up for the next chance at Zaxxon or Tempest!
So I hope that some part of the new channel could have a focus on Arcade gaming; looking at the old uprights and the games as they orginally came out as ‘back in the day’. Maybe add a comparsion of their respective ports to the various systems as well so folks can see just how much was lost going from the uprights to the home formats.
I know there aren’t many places with still functioning arcade systems , but I know there are many collectors who buy and keep the old machines. Perhaps you could get one of them to either host the show or help provide the machines- they could even do a Q+A on old arcade systems from other collectors as well as the general public. who might find a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the systems interesting.
Again, love the Angry Joe show and glad to see you all are getting your own channel! Good luck and good gaming!
No no stars !!! those small bitches take forever to count !!!.
You should totally tell us about the games laws in its own section.
It better not have that lame-ass “TGWTG” background and theme cuz that theme totally told “LEAVE THIS SITE”
and i did leave that site the first time i checked it ou.
I like yoyogames.com system, they use full stars, even though it goes into partial stars, then others can also review the game there, and is broken down in various parts. I like that system, give a good overall view of everything.
Here is an idea for rating. Split it into 4 categories. Characters, Story, Graphics, and Music. Each one rates from 0-25. So if all are 25, the game gets 100, And if there is something in the game that you like you can add bonus points.
How about gameplay? That’s the most important thing. Not to mention many other factors, such as bugginess, replayability, voice acting, controls, A.I., physics, multiplayer, etc.. Just choosing 4 categories really isn’t enough.
personal if i had to say any thing to add i would for sure if your going to do a hybrid atleast keep some thing like your 1-10 and 5 being of course average. also if this is purely for video game’s topics you should have movie’s that are based off or made from video games and the other way around of course. other then that i wish you all luck and cant wait to see it i also as a movie/anime fan i hope you put another site up after dealing with purely those ^^
Actually, on a scale of 1-10, 5.5 is average. If you want 5 to be average, the scale should be 0-10. But i do agree that Blistered Thumbs should review films and other mediums based on videogames.

15 whole number system?

i would say cut it down to 5 numbers
5 top games
4 good games
3 average games
2 bad games
1 crap games
maki it a thumb
5 points up
4 points up / sideways
3 points sideways
2 points down / sideways
1 points down
I love it all.

Forgot, get rid of the partial stars. LOL
I say keep doing what you’re doing, Joe. You have a good system going already.
Keep the system simple I say. Which is what you are doing.
1-10 number system
No decimals
5 is average. 1-4 is below average, 6-10 is above average.
10 – Nearly Flawless
9 – Outstanding
8 – Superb
7 – Very Good
6 – Good
5 – Average
4 – Flawed
3 – Bad
2 – Painful
1 – Broken
Joe about the gaming news check out the format of this gaming news website i think its done really well. http://www.nextgentactics.com/Games.aspx?Area=1&GName=GUNNS4HIRE's%20Dungeon

I like that idea Cody!
That way since different folks put different weights on those parts of a game, they can see how it measures up overall against the other parts.
So if someone likes the story but doesn’t care for the music, they can use that as a criteria to decide to buy the game or not.
Omg, i have to laugh everytime when you say “average Joe” the way you say it makes it just more hilarious.
Keep your 1-10 scale Angry Joe-style. And Joe, you didn’t put too much importance on length…i mean think about it: PPFFFOUURR HOURS??!!!
