HAWX 2 Review
Short Version: HAWX 2 makes some improvements over the original and boasts great mission variety. Unfortunately, a few of the new missions are borefests – combine that with a paper-thin cliched story and the game fails to be compelling enough for anyone other than fans of the genre.
What you’ll Like:
• Great amount of mission variety here, the objectives never get repetitive!
• Thank you for the Take-off & Landing Mechanics but this should have been in the first game.
• Easy to get into with an Arcade feel.
• 4 player co-op is a lot of fun if you can find willing and suitable players.
• Best Part: The Russian Mission that has you ambushed while attacking bombers.
What you’ll Hate:
• The Missions are a mixed bag, some dull, others exciting. Overall though, the game never seems to kick it into high gear.
• The Advanced Camera mode is nearly impossible to dogfight with, what’s its purpose?
• The competitive multiplayer is disappointing. Near broken.
• Worst Part: Having to fight 12 enemy aces by yourself – turns into a frustrating merry go round.
Final Verdict:
6/10

You know, Joe, you should try out Strike Suit Zero or maybe Project Sylpheed. I’m interested to hear your opinions of those games. They’re not simulators, but space combat is a genre that is generally overlooked nowadays. I haven’t heard many fantastic reviews of them, but I’ve agreed with some of your ratings for games that were rated terribly by major reviewers. I’ve grown to like your show. I’m interested as to what your thoughts about are about these games and the like.

personally i would give it a 7.5
I found it funny to hear him making recommendations about what to do to revolutionize the genre, cause I remembered the Ace Combat review he did.
Awesome review, but there was only one thing wrong with it: I’m on a boat.
When that song showed up, I immediately paused the review and went to youtube to listen to it again.
I’M ON A BOAT MOTHERFUCKER DON’T YOU EVER FORGET!!!!!!!!
You’re a cool guy, Joe, but you don’t compete with I’m On A Boat. That shit’s crisp.
favourite videogame review intro ever! (probably more fun than the game itself)
Joe’s right about the spy missions boring as hell….well atleast hell got its fire what those missions DONTttt…..ttt….T. But i LOVE Tom Clancy’s storylines and apparently thats what his games are about even this flightsims…but HAWX 1 was better and not only because it was longer.
i have got the game on wll and it is bad:(
Nah its not BAD… ist quite difficult if not familiar with flight sims and have the patients for it. LOVE it or HATE it thats with this game
Hey, i loved “Advanced Camera mode”! Without companion shot down six enemies without being scratched in HAWX 1.
whats the name of the movie shown in the beginning?
Hot Shots!
I must say, Charlie Sheen would play this scene better
Oh Joe… this game is for everyone EXCEPT hardcore simulator fans.
For them there are Flaming Cliffs 2 or A-10C or IL-2 – they are real simulators.
This HAW-Sh*t is crappy arcade game and it has nothing common with REAL fly sims.
But review as always classy Joe
It reminds me of Starfox 64. :p I want your babies joe! <3
I simply could not go away your web site prior to suggesting that I actually loved the usual info an individual provide on your visitors? Is gonna be back frequently to check out new posts
I know that many have recomented to look it, but I’m saying it too. Look for Ace Combat, Assault Horrizon. It looks much more viseral, up-your-face aerial combat game that anything so far. It manages to make aerial combat much closer in range and it includes based on trailers high grade of variability. I would love to see you do preview/review.
Joe, if you’re looking for a good flight game like this, I’d say check out the Ace Combat series. AC4: Shattered Skies is one of my favorites from the PS2 era, and the new one, Assault Horizon (out in I think November) looks really intense. It’s (sadly) got a modern story to it, unlike Shattered Skies, that’s set in a made up world, with modern fighters.
That’s just a suggestion from an Air Force brat, haha!
You like flight games where detail and up close and personal combat is your style. You need to play a WWII or WWI simulator. Rise of Flight is a great World War One flight simulator for the PC. Try it out sometime Jo..
All the things you said before giving the final veredict, like more ground detail, close and personal with your enemy, cool multiplayer and variety is going to appear on Ace combat: assault horizon !
The creater himself said it was going to be a “revolution” in the saga, check out the trailers !
This game and other recent “flight sims” make me think of an arcade-style flight sim on the PC that was done right – Strike Commander. Done by the same folks who made Wing Commander, it brought you into the near future where mercenary squadrons hired by large corporations fought for control of the skies, but it was not done in that lame, hammed-up paramilitary style that HAWX and Ace Combat try to pull off. The game put a strong emphasis on dogfighting, using guns in particular, by totally neutering the effectiveness of missiles. They were also prohibitively expensive for most of the mercenary squadrons to afford. The gameplay was nothing short of fantastic and really brought the visceral and exciting aspects of dogfighting into a genre that typically required the user to memorize a 500 page manual and actually control the plane for about 10% of its total flight time. There was a mini finance management system built into the game as well – you would be in charge of purchasing all of the ordnance for your squadron. Purchase too much ordnance and fail enough missions, and your squadron would become bankrupt. Do exceptionally well and manage the ordnance that you would use, and you’d be able to afford more exotic and effective weapons. The game is incredible dated graphically by today’s standards. A remake for a modern console would totally kick ass though, and if the gameplay was left intact, would re-revolutionize the genre of arcade flight sims.
Joe I think you should do a preview of Ace Combat Assault Horizon, but before you really should check out the other Ace Combat games.
you should really get a ps2 and try out ace combat 5. its one of the best if not the best flight simulator and combat game on the planet. Gripping story, smooth controls, great variety of planes, great voice acting and cinematic, great character development and even an awesome twist. even if its the only game you get for the ps2 it is worth it.
joe just play ace combat 6 the better flight sim game on the 360 and don’t HAWX 1 it fails but it does have a lot of planes
Ace Combat 4, Ace Combat 5 and Ace Combat 6 ALL mop the floor with the “HAWX” series. Check them out.
Ace Combat 4 is still one of my favorites, and Assault Horizon looks crazy
I hated this game can’t belive it got a 6 out of 10
I dislike flight simulators that are NOT in a starwars or shi-fi enviroment. And if your looking for a challenging ubisoft game then play heroes of might and magic.(Make us a review about it too)
Have you checked out the Trailer for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon? i have always been a fan of Ace Combat and they have gotten there systems and stories down pat
Really you should review Freespace 2 with the FSO improvements.
i played this game and it was ok in my experience but it didnt bring me the thrill in witch other pilot games did for example the ace combat series they were really fun and i would get sucked into the story i would get so pissed off when one of my squadron would get shot down and im really looking forward to ace combat assault horizon the graphics look ten times better i would like to see a video for that may the angryjoe army live forever
I had fun with this game just as much as the first H.A.W.X. And that I’m on a boat song is f******
annoying! Thanks for shutting them up.
play IL-2 if you want a dog fight with only guns. no missile, no radar, no cheats, no other bull crap. straight up gun battle.
dude…… stop fucken replying to that damn troll, your keeping him around.
if you say nothing he will get bored cause hes not getting the attention he craves and will leave.
Ace combat 5 is the best!!!!111
You should review Ace Combat: Assault Horizon when its release, or give us your opinion on the trailer
Heh good review Joe
The type of game you describe pretty much means some WW1/WW2 flight combat sim but that horse has been beaten to death.
Not a game I was gonna pick up and certainly not now. I’ll keep dreaming of the next Freespace 2 as well.
Hey joe,
Nice work on with the show, it keeps getting better and better. Only one problem, I cant seem to finsih this video. keeps stoping at random intervals. I cant fastforward it. nothing. Ally our other vids i can watch fine. But this one i cant. You switched condecs or something?
Hi Joe,
you should check out “Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow”
i’d like to see your opinion on this game, and i believe you will have fun playing this game as well! =)
Please do a review on “Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow”
i’m very sure this game deserves the approval seal of Bad Ass Game from ANGRY JOE.
and this is a kind of game we, gamers should support.
Cheers,
Joe, if your interested in simulators then you might want to take a look at X3: Terran Conflict
Also, the guys at Egosoft could create an interesting space map for something like Mass Effect. Instead of that boring space map they are using in ME2, take a look at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2boFo6xVoac&feature=related
Hey, seeing as FS2 got a mention here once again, might I inquire if our angry host is aware of FreeSpace Open? Basically, we got the source code for the engine 10 years ago, and have been upgrading it ever since to take advantage of new hardware. Check out the screenshot gallery here: http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Screenshots
Disclaimer: I am one of the people working on the engine at the moment.
Quite frankly, HAWX 2 is inferior to the first in almost every way. Ignoring the story (because they’re both pretty bad in the end), HAWX 2 seemingly decided to roll back the fun in favor of (in this category of game) pointless simulation.
Seperating AA missiles and AG missiles was a pretty annoying way to start things off, but nothing major.
Then they removed the gun aim assist reticule from not only the standard view but from the Assistance Off mode, making the planes you are forced to use guns on a game of guesswork and blind luck. Making this worse was the enemy AI pulling off impossible-to-match maneuvers (whether thats blinding acceleration, or moving at impossibly speeds in a circle around you) and/or planes that pop off an unlimited amount of flares every few seconds.
Then they threw a mission critical ground attack component in pretty much every mission. Nearly every one being timed in one way or another. Meaning you generally didn’t have time to do the slow and arduous circle dance with the cheating AI in the air because of paragraph #3 up there because if you do, the things you’re supposed to protect will die. On top of THAT problem, there’s missions where you have to use the “Precision” bombs on targets within a strict time limit. Precision bombs, of course, force you to stop maneuvering, and you can’t even use flares, making you a sitting duck for the unavoidable number of planes you’re forced to leave alive, less you fail the mission by not bombing a target soon enough.
I think you were pretty generous giving this a 6/10, even taking into account co-op mode and mission variety, which I don’t agree with since every mission eventually turns into you dodging AI missiles while destroying ground targets. 6/10 is about what I would give the first. HAWX 2 deserves a 4.
And yes, you should play Ace Combat 5. And 4. And Zero.
Flight sims today are even to hard core or to “soft core”.
For hardcore I would recommend people checking out “DCS: A-10C Warthog”. Looks great.
Cool guy 666. Dont sigh up for the army just to dis angry joe. SO GO FUCK YOURSELF AND I HATE 666 Some dont but still its the sigh of the devil and angry joe the best. I think so and i know most of us here think So. LONG LIVE THE NERD. I AM A NERD A GEEK AND I AM VERY PROUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
