.
that’s odd! Even in my godforsaken city in south Russia we have better looking cinemas)) And the price for the movie in 3D is only +2 bucks from the 2D version.
I’m going to see priest 3d, is it meant to be any good.
I have a few things I like to add.
First of all. 3DS, no glasses needed to look at 3D.
Let’s hope they speed up the process and make it available for the big screen as well. Without the frustrating glasses. I mean, I’m already wearing a pair of glasses, and it sucks when you have to push the crappy glasses on top, or else my eye sighting would’ve probably sucked, giving me a headache after the movie was done playing.
Other then that, film looks alright, but I’ve seen many awesome trailers, and then the movie ends up being ok, but nothing that’d be sending an impact on the viewer.
Naming the 3rd Mummy. Awesome trailer, not so about the movie.
Apart from that, nice review, and that Green Lantern trailer looked awesome, hopefully that ain’t also a fake teaser.
I went to go see this movie, not one of Branagh’s best by far, it’s a fun movie which I sort of enjoyed, but Joe’s right about the 3D I took my glasses off because most of the movie isn’t in 3D.
They should take the Cinema snobs advice and either make a movie totally 3D and cheesey, or no 3D at all, you cant have both 3D and none 3D in a movie unless it’s cut very well and in this movie it’s basically lumped together.
Really it just frustrates the audience which instead of watching the movie, is wondering when the 3D is going to start, which is a shame because the movie itself isn’t bad for a comic book movie adaptation in a genre where many have failed.
You were right about the 3D, that was pointless. And I was pissed when I found out there wasn’t a 2d showing and had to shell out for the specs even though I’ve collected about 4 pairs from the 3d vewing so far at home. (we’re allowed to keep them in England)
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut
I’ve got to disagree with you a HELL of a lot on this one Joe! Which is a first, usually your opinion is pretty smack on the dot to my own on flicks.
SPOILERS
I surprisingly found this film more enjoyable than Iron Man 1 and 2, which I do like a lot. I was actually happy that the villian’s plan wasn’t a TAKE OVER THE WORLD scheme or a BECOME ALL POWERFUL scheme. Loki just wanted to get stuff done and get his father’s respect in the bargain. He’s not evil, at least not until the after-credits scene where he’s accepted that he’s not likely to ever gain that respect. He wanted to put some hurt on the frost giants just as much as Thor did, he simply knew that he couldn’t do it with Thor around and that also it was easier to wipe ém out rather than keep ‘em in fear. The reason the frosty box was dropped as a plot point was because it wasn’t important beyond Loki using it to find his origins (parents that had left him to die = more frosty hate). The frost giants probably WOULD have wanted it back but with a leader dead as dillinger and no way of sending more troops through to asgard on their own that wasn’t going to happen. Loki’s letting go to fall into darkness touched me more than a simple beat to death could have. You have to admit, that was classy and classical.
Secondly, I was surprised you didn’t mention Thor’s badass support team! That escapade at the beginning reminded me of an epic D&D session, “fighting like men!” indeed! In addition their pop up at the final battle help show how Thor’s experiences being a vulnerable mortal had made him more aware that these people mattered. He wasn’t frenzied like at the beginning when he ignored they were hurt, he made sure they left safely.
And that brings me to my next point, Thor’s turnaround, isn’t just based around Natalie Portman but a culmination of a few things. His inability to fend of dozens at once showed him weakness. His failing to lift the hammer showed him how he wasn’t fated to always win, that he could lose. His rescue by the doctor (though obviously a trick to SHIELD) let him realise that relying on others in a jam is a possibility. Loki’s betrayal taught him things are not always what they seem etc etc. Portman isn’t the focal point of his advancement, just a part of it. Is it a weak romance? Probably. But as another poster has said, love can hit you like a hammer. And a six foot well-spoken musclebound man is probably not the WORST pulling material.
I do agree with a few of your points, the town was an obvious set. A bit more carnage probably would have helped, some moments could have had more godjuice to em buuuuuut I was kinda glad they didn’t go with the by the numbers, blow up L.A. or NYC or DC plot and kept it in hicksville. This was a personal story about epic characters and mortals. The real risks were not for us but for the future of Asgard and so the cool stuff happens there. And at least it was a fun ride when it could have been a preach-a-thon.
LONG post I know! I apologise Joe and fellow soldiers of the Angry Army. But like gas the day after a taco party, I needed to let that out or I’d explode!
Hope the Cap doesn’t let you down, will be watching that when it comes out top.
Cheers,
Boosty
Long post, but not one word wasted. You pretty much summed it all up. Good job!
(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BIG SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
I would also like to note the brief appearance of Hawkeye. I didn’t expect him to be in the movie! So that was a well hidden surprise that the commercials and trailers didn’t ruin for me. Even though he didn’t do anything…it was a nice cameo.
You know, in terms of villains, its unfair to include Captain America in a contest for that. Why?
Because you have Agent FUCKING Smith playing Red Skull. If there is one thing that Hugo Weaving can do, is make any movie infinitely better by being a villain. Face it, no one watched the matrix trilogy because it was great throughout, you watched it for Agent Smith! And him as Red Skull? Seeing him in the costume just gave me shivers…
The cast for Captain America is fantastic. Chris Evans was reluctant to be Captain America, due to all the comic movies he has been in already. A lot of people felt the same way including me, but that’s totally understandable. I was glad he recognized the issue. Most actors can’t set themselves aside and look at what’s transpiring. Since they’re rebooting Fantastic Four anyway, I don’t mind seeing as Captain America.
As for the other cast, they just make the rest of the movie outstanding. I haven’t seen Tommy Lee Jones do anything but make a movie better simply for being so good at what he does. Having Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving has as the villain is just makes a winning situation a even more triumphant.
I’m still bummed out about Norton not being Bruce Banner anymore. He fit the part perfectly. I don’t know what happened between him and Marvel but whatever will be, will be.
Your right. Took much 3D now adays. TOO FUCKING MUCH!
The movie is a waste of time.
It is just a forced 2 hour introduction to the upcoming inevitable Avengers movie, which I personally think is going to have to big a cast, be a bit too rushed, and a movie more about the villain.
These movies are just prequel character introductions with very moderate depth.
You keep saying that u keep getting dirty 3-D glasses, do u have to return them after the movie for others to use? That is nasty we get to keep ours and everyone gets new one in NYC
Joe, that was not a wish-granting object of power, that was the Ice Casket that contains a wind so cold it freezes all that faces it. You’re thinking of the Cosmic Cube. They stole the casket because, well, it was the Frost Giant’s main weapon against them.
Also Joe, I’d like to comment on the romance. Now this is a pretty weak argument I’m about to make, but I do think it’s very possible.
Do remember that Kenneth Bragnagh is a Shakespearean interpreter, and overall Shakespeare fan. He may have intended for the romance of thor and jane to be classic puppy-love, almost Romeo-Juliet esque. I do think they could’ve added to this if they had Odin forbid the love like they did within the comics.
Thor was going to be a tough movie to make from the start. It could’ve turned into another “Beastmaster 2″ or “Masters of the Universe” easily, but it didn’t.
I think Captain America will surprise people more. He doesn’t have a iron suit, he doesn’t have gamma power or God like powers. He’s may be the weakest Avenger strength-wise but he doesn’t need that much power to succeed against greater odds. Just the super serum, a unbreakable shield and the will to fight.
I like the movie, but again it was painfully average of a movie.
Haven’t you guys noticed the trends for Marvel movies lately?
They are either:
A.) Really good! Spiderman, Blade, Iron Man, X-Men, Soon to be Captain America
etc.
or
B.) Really bad or just plain… well, plain. :/ Hulk (Oh god!), Daredevil, Elektra, Fantastic 4, Ghost Rider (Oh dear lord!), etc.
Probably the worst being the first Hulk movie. The recent one with Edward Norton was pretty good.
Not that I particularly hate any of these movies, I mean I’ll watch them well over most the crap Hollywood shits out of it’s pit of evil… like “Rubber” the movie about *sigh* a killer tire. But through the words of Spoony, hey if they’re not good for their acting, they’re good for awesome fights and bad ass effects… some of the time.
X-men a really good movie? get out of here. Daredevil was way better.
Personally I find reducing a nordic god to a crappy super hero an insult. :O
I disagree with a lot of what you say about the movie in general.
I wish I had the time to try and say why I have that opinion, but I’m in quite a hurry. I liked this movie even more than I liked Iron Man.
Tell ya what I think later. Peace.
From what Ive seen in the trailers and what I have heard from both you and Doug, Joe, this strikes me as a filler movie to give Marvel and DC fans something to watch and do before this summers BIG releases.
i was my first 3d movie and 3d sucks !
Joe, think about it, it’s Thor. Look at the original costume designs. It could have turned out terrible. It turned out the way it should have, big and over the top, the way most comic films should turn out, especially on Thor. It was well portrayed for a Thor movie.
I think this movie’s got the most stupid consept in history
First of THOR IS NOT AUSTRALIAN NOR AMERICAN HES FUCKING DANISH
Second he’s not arrogant
Third he’s NOT!!! the god of thunder he’s the god of brutal onslaught
Lastly if you know anything about nordic mythology you know that ODIN was the bigest duchebag in Asgård even bigger than Loke
Also, it states in Nordic mythology that Loke is not technically evil, he is the embodiment of cruelty and pleasure, so whenever I see a movie, game, or novel referencing him as an all powerful, EVIL entity I point my finger and laugh. If he ever stepped off the boundaries that Odin established he would get his ass lit up.
That is one reason I laugh at this movie and the comics (not saying either are bad) because Loke is similar to both Hades, and Anubis: They take pride in what they do yes, they are guardians of a special position yes, and they wield dark powers yes, but they are not directly evil they just do their job.
You think Loke is bad? At least he didn’t start a cult of followers known as the fucking “BERSERKERS” to do his will like his papa did!
By the way, I hope they make a movie for Thor showcasing bad ass fights through the legendary “Ragnarok”!
It’s based off the comic book Thor. Not the direct mythology.
Well about your 3-D rant, I don’t disagree with you. Personally haven’t had problems with slimy glasses, but if the glasses are that gross you need to bring it up at the ticket booth. Now about the movie, I was concerned about it if only it is very hard to take anyone seriously in that costume. It seems to me that its one to wait until the movie comes out on Netflix. But awesome review as always.
12.50??!! dude that’s expensive.
i saw the movie a week before the premiere (the base was showing it for free for military personnel) and it seemed OK to me. and for someone who doesn’t know a whole lot about Thor, it was alright. good review Joe!!
Hey, M have a bunch of theaters in my city that show it in both 2 and 3d guess I’m just lucky then
Mina bollar skumpar upp och ner
I don’t normally post on the websites of the shows my husband watches….but…
In response to Joe’s comment about Jane and Thor falling in love to fast….
Love hits you like a mack truck. and it usually is going about 100 miles an hour.
Same as with Epiphanies…they just happen like a smack on the forehead…
I actually really liked the movie…but mostly because Thor is a hotty. And also I love comic book movies (except for Spiderman 2 and 3)
fast five review?? i would think that’s more your kinda movie too see, “an all out action flick”..
i thougth this movie was awsome way better then you give it credit
Maybe see it in 2D and you wought just sit thier pissed all day
Lol when someone named Skarsgard is in Thor you know the producers know what they’re doing. I didnt get to see the movie in 3d or even in a theatre. I am a cheap ass wipe who looked it up on a pc but it was still pretty damn good even with the lag. My schools pc wont let me see the damn review but from te score I have to say I ain’t looking forward to it. From other comments though, it seems like you didn’t(and i know you have previous problems with these words) do the research on Thor.
Joe, next time you gonna see a movie watch it in Puerto Rico. In every Theater there is only ONE 3D Screen and every time I go I get brand new glasses. OH and its only $8.75 BTW at the end of the credits I did felt like “wha-!?” but I was with a comic book nut and he told me that it means that Loki is going to be the bad guy for The Avengers and that the device they found it has to do with some other Villain..I don’t remember who but yeah. SALUDOS DESDE LA ISLA, BRO.
Unable to play!Why?
uable to play ;[
You know what? Thor is a lot like Angry Joe. They both have strong distinct facial hair. They both have lightning powers. They both jump at any opportunity to fight for any reason. Angry Joe blew up Canada when he was president in that weird alternate dream for petty reasons, much like Thor was destroying all the frost giants because the act of a few intruders. They have a lot in common.
If Joe had a hammer forged in a dying star that only he could wield, I’m sure he would NEVER want to lose it.
If you strip away the leather jacket, the S, the mustache and the force lightning. Angry Joe would be a mere mortal. :/
“Sorry, we are unable to play this episode.” I’m not from the U.S, so that might have something to do with it, but it has worked well before..
Yeah, same problem here.
Great review!
JOE! I am so glad that you are back for the movie review , I also do want to see your full review for battle LA and sucker punch!
I kind of agree and disagree with Joe. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie (though the romance was shallow I admit that), it was well written, well acted, and overall pretty well done. The cast choice was at first questionable for me, but it was a pleasant surprise how they turned out. The humour was REALLY good in Thor, that’s for sure. Though the whole SHIELD should have at least gotten a bit more screentime. I only realised that I saw Hawkeye after talking with a couple of my friends a day after the movie. If you have a superhero cameo in your movie, at least let us know that it’s him! (The guard with the bow in the tower for people like me who didn’t realise it
) Sadly 3-D affected the score on this one by 1-2 points in my humble opinion..
I liked this movie a lot. I was able to see it in 2D (the big cineplex where I live usually has both 3D and 2D versions), neither did I see that Conan sketch. While the action wasn’t spectacular, I thought there was enough of it; that is, to say, the plot felt well paced between the plot, action, and humour portions that at no point did the film feel excessively long or was dragging. Also, got to agree with another poster; Thor’s growth seems more based on the Mjolnir & Loki bits than the girl.
There are several other fine points I disagree on, but I digress. Personally, I’d give this film at least an 8 out of 10. I think you had too much negative energy, between the game, cruddy 3D, and the Conan sketch to enjoy the film properly.
I have to disagree with you on the scene after the credits Joe. That scene is actually ties into the the upcoming Avengers movie next year. And that Cube is going to be very important in the Captain America movie.
Conan O’Brien ruined Thor for me. When I saw the movie, all I could do was laugh thinking about his feminine voice-over.
“Oh no, this is Earth isn’t it?”
“Wheeeee!”
Even so, it was pretty fun to watch. Can’t wait until Captain America comes out.
Joe, why do you subject yourself to watching films in 3D? Even if your friends convince you to see it, it sure as Hell isn’t worth the eye-strain.
On a comic related note, it would have been nice if the film followed the origins of Thor when he was reincarnated into Donald Blake and became a med student. That would have left a nice 20-minute gap for character development that showed his interactions with the rest of the supporting cast until his powers were restored by Mjolnir about halfway into the film.
To bad for you Joe, hopefully here in México are to many movie theaters that play in 2D, the bad side is that doubled movies like this are like yours in 3D, i liked the movie, but i agree could be better
I’m always happy to see you head to the Alamo Drafthouse, but which theater was a bajillion miles away? Nothing in Austin is more than a twenty minute drive.
The movie is good. I think the 3-D effected Joe’s view on the movie considerably. I’m not a big fan of the 3-D shoehorning either, but I suggest you give the movie a try in 2D in a dvd review. I gave the movie a B. The scene after the credits ties into Captain America…you’ll see.
(!!SPOILER!!!)
It wasn’t so much the girl that changed him. It was the scene where he tried to get the hammer back and failed to wield it. Plus, the meeting with Loki in the shield interrogation room really effected Thor. As for the relationship it was defiantly shallow…but hey, when you’re Thor nothing’s a challenge.
You know Joe, that’s weird. The theater I work at we show these movies in both 2d and 3d. In the same building. Not even 100ft from each other. I don’t even know what to tell you. Tell you what man, try coming in Phoenix and we’ll get you in a 2D superhero movie.
haha albany has lots of 2D or 3D and 3D is cheaper out here……… oh yeah and it does not look like jabba shot his load all over his 3D glasses
In Canada, or at least my theatre in Canada, the glasses don’t come all gross and gooey. They come nice and dry and packaged in a sealed plastic bag. and after you drop them off and I assume they get thrown though a dish washer (in case someone had face herpes I guess) and repackaged in the bag.
Now what I hate about 3D is I wear glasses and I have to put on two different sets of glasses, which is STUPID!
I posted this on the Cinemasnob.com but im not sure how many of you visit his site so here goes.
http://www.2d-glasses.com/
this wont help the rebal alliance show the evil empire that we dont want this 3D bullshit but at least we can watch our movies in peace.
Thanks for the link! Im going to tweet this and share it!
Nice Review man. Was planning to watch it this week but i guess im gonna wait a bit more and this week watch Fast Five instead
Fast Five has more action, many of my friends said they liked it better.
good job on the review JOE awesome i save so much money watching u !!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw thor today, it was great very true to the comic, and just a plain good movie my 50 year old mom even liked it. (took her to see it for mothers day at her request)
You gonna play the game in “3-D”, Joe?
