It’s not only crazy hard to play, but it’s also frustrating as hell. Which is something new when many games are just boring. This one takes the cake for actively antagonizing the player, with a control scheme that was developed by an ocd maniac.
They should have just cut out all the diplo-strategy feature and made a tactical combat game. Make that work and spawn whatever units people wanted and they could spend the rest of the 2-3 years expanding it.
What is this game and where did you find it.
This is not what SOTS2 was like at release. The SOTS2 release was terrible.
Suul’ka revealed!
http://www.kerberos-productions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=20712
And it’s veeeery interesting
What isn’t mentioned is that the same writer for Homeworld 1 and Homeworld Cataclysm’s back story and cultural details is the main writer of SOTS1/2.
This is good for people who liked the story, and thought it was going to get continued in Homeworld 2, but didn’t.
There’s a lot of interesting back story to SOTS1 on the kerberus forums, which made the game a lot more interesting to play. It’s not in the game itself, which is why if you split it apart, it looks bad in comparison.
Sins of a Solar Empire is similar in terms of UI simplification, but Sins of a Solar Empire focuses much more on tactical combat and RPG abilities where as SOTS1 favored more strategic 4x gameplay on a map, plus some tactical combat. So having advanced ships were good, but you had to have a strong economy to support the research and ship building.
Missed this one first time around
SotS 1 was one of those really brilliant games that passed somewhat under the radar. The replayability of it! Sins of a Solar Empire lasted for a couple of playthroughs on my hard drive. SotS1 with expansions is still there, and still being played. I do not think I have had more out of a game with the exception of Mount & Blade and the original Civilization.
Thanks for reviewing great PC games as well as you do. Too many big name review sites these days only review stuff that everyone already knows about, making them useless. You however, review content that might otherwise slip under the radar for old folks like me (38) who like something other than the latest Call of Duty. Thanks Joe!
- A true fan
Damn Looks like im going to need a new PC. Good thing Im already going to custom build one.
Don’t be mad at me Joe, usually I share your view on games but here… I can’t follow you. Sword of the Stars 1 got mostly abysmally bad critiques and IMVPO rightfully so. SotS2 looks better but still somewhat like from 1990. No offense meant, but I HOPE it is good, but it does look a bit dated.
Did you ever play SOTS Prime? It got better over the course of development. Every expansion worked out the kinks and the bugs and added new features and factions. I didn’t like the original release all that much compared to the other games I had at the time but now I put it up among my all-time favorites.
SOTS 2 is native 64-bit as well. What it may lack in graphical quality if it does, it will make up for in detail. You can target individual pixels on an enemy ship even in the original although it means more in this one with the ability to take out ships in a variety of different ways. There’s a bunch of things that only forum-goers know about the new economical and social systems and they’re promising an excellent release and given how their product quality is improving I’m inclined to believe them on those counts.
If not, then they’ll do with SOTS 2 what they did with Prime, listen to the community and get everything fixed. It won’t be nearly as bad as Empire was upon release and we all know the critical reviews for that game and the reality of the situation…This looks polished as hell with the missing survey reports compared to the hell that lasted for 5 months until it was finally “gold” :p.
I guess the point of this rant is that Kerberos has been slowly stepping up to fix their quality control issues and are staying with the September release date, stating multiple times that it isn’t moving in an effort to fix their previous problems and I’m willing to fund such an endeavor by buying this product and playing the living hell out of it for that stated ‘Babylon 5, Total War experience’. Maybe with a little IC role-play in my first few online games against the newbies
.
Liir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love the Liir i mean come on its high thec alien dolhpins
Is this game similar to Sins of the Solar Empire?
Why have I never heard of this game series before? Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention Angryjoe!
I’ve never heard of this series.
Is it like the Total War, combining turn-based and real-time? I’m into both, so wouldn’t matter to me, it’s the share glory of owning your own spaceship, and customise it to your own specific armada.
In other words, looks damn interesting, and with plans on getting a new PC, it would certainly be an interesting choice.
Looks awesome in a short brief description. ^_^
my brother has the original, and this is my personal opinion, its boring and stupid, just my opinion, way more excited for skyrim!!!
Thanks Joe!!!
Joe! Why dont you make a video about bioshock infinte? That game looks so sick. At least do one about how it would be so good.
yeah, and elizabet is suprisingly hot. can’t wait

Thank you Joe! I’ve been waiting over 10 years for a game like this! I know others exist but I haven’t found one that has all of that detail.
Can’t wait for this game.
after see how excited you are about the this game i went out and got the first one and i can now see why you are so excited about this game i am now biting at the bit waiting for this to come out
oh btw. whats this game about? never played (or even heard of) the original one. is it kinda like master of orĂon 2(which was awesomesauce even long after its release) or does it concentrate more on space battle tactics and such?
Looks good to me. I’m personally not a fan of space combat, but the gameplay looks well polished from what I’ve seen here.
sonic free riders was the best game in my opinion and i think joe did a great review on it by giving that rate what it deserves 1/10 good job joe
Being a huge fan of the original game I have high expectations for this sequel obviously, and I have to say I do like the direction they are headed in for this game, it is mindblowingly fantastic.
I am ecstatic that all the races will be back (GO MORRIGI!!!!!) and that all the original content and features are all back, if theres anything I hate that a sequel does – is throw out previous content – and this one is keeping it. I really did not expect the new 3 dimensional shields, but it’s an excellent emphasis to positioning your ships properly, it makes combat more hectic. I really didn’t expect that I could design the interiors either, that is pretty awesome, oh and the name of the Ship is written on it across a Holographic screen… :O Fuck yes…
That User Interface I will agree needs some work, thankfully it is Work in progress and that’s good. I thank you Angry Joe for delivering this information to us, I won’t even mind them pushing the release to Winter…I want this game to fucking rock!
Evrett has for some reason developed a massive grudge against Kerberos.
I for myself am really psyched by the game
Another gaming Journalist who throws softballs and doesnt address Kerberos’ horrid quality control and release record. And people wonder why the industry is dying
I find it unfair (but typical of how criticism is handled by this developer) that my legitimate comment was targeted by that one community. I’d thumb it up but I dont have a forum full of mindless yes-men I can sick on any critics.
I think the person at fault here is you not everyone else. Oh no of course! If anyone disagrees with your obvious genius they must all be idiots! I wish everyone else in the world was as a fine speciman of human being as you are!
Another gaming Journalist who throws softballs and doesnt address Kerberos’ horrid quality control and release record. And people wonder why the industry is dying.
I will say of the interviews I’ve seen this is one of the best..I like to see the journalist keeping control of the interview rather than just be a passenger on rails
yo angry joe i have a great strategy game.its caled knights of honor, try it its fucking awesome
Still looks interesting.
Finally! I have been waiting for another game like this since Sins of a Solar Empire Trinity
[...] is an exclusive interview for Sword of the Stars 2 over at Angry Joe: Sword of the Stars II: Exclusive Gameplay & The Lords of Winter Revealed! AngryJoeShow The initial section doesn't give you much new info but the last minute or so is in game footage of [...]
I really like sword of the stars but I always wish they allow for creation of new races for the players like comes with stock so many and then you can just make more to add to the game so that you could have more then liek 8 players total me and my freinds still wish we could had games with 16 or so civs at once or more like our civ 4 games 32 player games be great !
Given how each race has a different FTL drive system, that comeptley changes the tactical and strategic gameplay, there would be no easy way to add a “new” race. It just can’t be done.
Sub-faction that sharess the same drive technology..maybe. But new races? That would require coding in new drive methods and all the implications thereoff.
Great interview, Joe.
I loved your review of fable 2… looks like the angry joe can be happy too.
thanks for bringing this gorgeous game to the limelight!
Thanks a lot Joe, now you got me hyped up even more for this game…. the only space combat game I’ve played is Star Wars: Empire at War but this looks like that game on steroids, nice coverage.
First time writing a coment here. The reason, I loved Sword of the Stars. I am thankful someone is covering this game. Next to Egosoft’s “X” series this is my next favorite! So Thanks Angry Joe!
Most of the time, getting excited for a game usually leads to disappointment for me. But I loved Sword of the stars, and I after watching this, I can’t sit still. I made my mind up along time ago to pick this game up, but now I can’t wait. As soon as I’ve got a solid release date on my hands, I’m going to start planning my vacation from work, this game deserves it.
Ps. Joe, you did an awesome job at keeping it professional. If I was in your shoes at that time, I would not be able to keep my composure.
I guess I’m not quite into it yet, and will need to see a lot more game-play and graphics in order to get sucked in.

I’ll explain: Metacritic sucks, Sword of the Stars owns
I have never heard about this game, which is strange since everyone here is saying its the best game ever, so I check up Metacritic and it has the score of 68… Explain?
@Domwood – Metacritic reviewed the game without expansions and never updated their review. SotS1 before the expansions was good but not great — it had a lot of unrealized potential. The expansions took the game up from being “ok, has potential” to “wow, that’s actually quite good!”. The sequel looks to take it all the way up to “holy crap that’s awesome!”
holy shit i just jized my pants, this game kicks ass,and the graphic-HOLY SHIT
Shields up! Fire photon torpedoes!
One of the best games ever made…and now it’s getting a sequel that looks even more amazing.
I’m trembling with anticipation, giggling like a schoolgirl!
It looks great and looking forward to it releasing. Also the developers are very active on their forums and willing to talk to their fans.
Omg joe this game looks….BAD ASS!!
Joe, were you a fan of Masters of Orion?
Finally – a game worthy of the PC and not some console port! I’ve been waiting for something like this for ages.
I didn’t play the first SOTS but I heard a little about this game an now i’m excited for it as well. It sounds really awesome. An that’s funny he mentions ground combat at the end. Since that seems like the only thing that is missing. I used to enjoy playing Star Wars Empire at War an it was really similar to this. Where you could take over Planets an fight with space fleets an also small skirmishes on the ground. So if they add that in an expansion then this game will finally replace that for me.
This game reminds me good, old Sins of a Solar Empire. I can’t wait for the release of this game!
Howgh!
this looks good i don t really play pc games much ive only played mass effect 1 so heres my 2nd can t wait to get it
Glad that you finally got the treat of seeing this game!
Looks awesome, and I’ll most likely buy It. Thanks Joe!
Look really hard, confusing and complicated.
seriously ppl, why thumb him/her down? :S I’ve never been into strategic games like this cause they are really hard, confusing and complicated. Have an open mind, not everyone is into strategic games, and plus Griffin wasn’t bashing Joe for caring about the game either. Sooo can somebody please explain all the thumbs down? :S
its called fanboys, look it up. ^^
I’m pretty sure you’re a sock puppet.
ummm…the comment doesn’t seem to be written by a fanboy :S I mean Griffin and Jack are from Roosterteeth…if that’s what you guyz mean :S
