Is it SO hard to make an RPG Harry Potter game? I mean hell they are WIZARDS! They shoot lightning out of their wands (battles), lift stuff up and stupefy is a disarming spell NOT an attack (puzzles platforming), although don’t quote me on that. They go on adventures (quest), they solve puzzles (RPG puzzles), they make difficult decisions (Bioware type conversations evil/bad choices), they go dungeon crawling (adventures / more quest), most of their movies were filmed inside or in corridors or in dungeons so its easy to make the game’s environment (easy graphics), they grow and learn (level up) and they ALREADY HAVE AN AMAZING STORY (…story)
HOW HARD IS IT TO MAKE THAT? ITS ALREADY MADE FOR THEM!!!!
The first one was a definitely awesome game.
There are more puzzles, magical elements, and even some parts from the original book that the movie did not show.
You should try the first one, Joe!
I found the first, second and third games absolutely fine. They were more puzzle based than going around murdering everyone with your wand guns.
Mneh.
I liked the first and second movie games for pc and game boy , game boy advanced but it was probably because I was 12 or so when I played them. Still a harry potter fan but the last harry potter video game I played was the 3rd movie one and was really disappointed and stopped playing after that.
Best Review Ever!
i hate licensed games the only one that got it right was golden eye
I actually rather liked the first 2 Harry Potter games, and the fifth one. They did pretty well in my book.
Your Garbage this game rocks
Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets on gameboy color rocked o.o it was an RPG and was turned based and a good deal of the bosses were actually hard to beat. Especially the basilisk at the end AND it had a new game+ kind of feature. You even had equipment and wizard card collecting which served two greater purposes the first being card combo spells that harry can use in battle by using up 3 copies of certain cards (you could carry 9 of every card except rares I think) the second purpose unlocking very worthwhile equipment from chests after collecting all of the cards in a category. It also had a spell that let you gain information on every enemy type which included a description, weaknesses and strengths of the enemy which you could check at any time, even in battle!
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for GBA is pretty similar except it allows the use of spells in the field to clear small puzzles and obviously better graphics.
Those two Harry Potter games were extremely satisfying and I used to play the second one through several times! They just have a really good Harry Potter feel to them, they do the story and world justice and the second one in particular is really complex and deep but only the GBC version, I’m pretty sure they remade the second game for GBA but it’s different.
These games also encouraged exploration, there were secret passages and cards lying around in various spots and money as well.
Edt->
If you’re a real Harry Potter fan and you haven’t tried Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for GBC or Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for GBA you’re missing out, especially if you want some RPG in your Harry Potter.
the first movie also had a gbc rpg that was pretty much the same as the second(never played the 3rd gba one) the first to gba games were sorta knock-offs of the console games, which were cartoony and over the top, but decent platforming games (i’d say the 3rd was probably the best of those) but the 4th movie game is where it seems like they stopped trying
Actually Hp 6 was an amazing game…
Play the PS1 games. They’re a lot better. Not great, but better.
kind of disappointing but the ps1 games and GBA versions of the harry potter games where great for the fans. but ever since it came on the ps2 and then now on the 360 they just went downhill.
Have you played the harry potter 6th? I personally find it much more fun then the 7th and 8th game.
4 hours of garbage or more hours of garbage joe? what would you rather have?
Order of the Phoenix was the best game in the HP games
It might be for naughty children. This is coal in game form.
This is the BEST game of this series.Trust me.The others are 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000x worse!!
Learn to type, then form your opinion
The HP games peaked at “Order of the Phoenix” in my opinion. Aside from disappointing lack of a quidditch mode it was a solid game if you add up the minigames, the story, the battles overall I think that game was the best…even if it did start the whole “gun wand” thing but at least they made it make sense with making leveling up matter.
LotR: Return of the King(PS2) was a movie-license game from EA, and it turned out to be pretty enjoyable. Then again, few licenses are treated with enough respect to get a good game out of it.
True, the couple of earliest Harry Potter games was pretty enboyable. Not great, but fine. I remember playing on PlayStation 2 and actually having fun. Damn, and to think I was going to spend my money on The Deathly Hallows Part 2… NO thx. =(
It’s really disappointing how these Harry Potter games have dropped in quality over time because I remember the first three games being awesome on the PC! (I haven’t played the games on the consoles so I don’t know what they were like)
In the first game you got free exploration and a tutorial that was fun to start. You could search for secret areas, really test the different uses for your spells, and collect Berti Botts Every Flavor Beans to trade for the Wizard Cards. There was also some pretty creative parts with one being having to fight Malfoy with Wizard Crackers which you pick up and throw to hurt him, but you had to do it quickly or you’d get hurt and later in the game fighting Fluffy the three headed dog in the forbidden corridor where you had to play a flute to make all three heads go to sleep. The healing item you got was chocolate frogs which were very helpful. And there were Quidditch games to where you flew around trying to find the golden snitch while avoiding getting hurt. And the fight you have with Voldemort in the end is an actual challenge. You don’t just cast spells at him. No, you have to use strategy to make him go down.
The second game improved on the stuff from the first game and added more to. You got to keep your spells from the last game giving yourself a bigger arsenal of spells along with the new spells you learn and use in the challenge sections. There’s also a bit more creativity in fighting enemies and making them stay down. After casting a spell, you have to pick up the enemy and throw them into their gnome holes. And there’s a dueling mini-game which is a lot of fun plus a trading part of the game where you trade beans to get more cards and with Fred and George get stuff to help you improve in the Quidditch matches which have gotten more challenging. And the fight with the Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets is very satisfying to get through.
The third game improved even more! You have Hermione and Ron with you this time to help in fights and have them learn new spells along with Harry, more strategy in fights and collecting items, and some pretty cool extra missions to do around Hogwarts which is free to explore at your leisure. It’s a bit darker in the story department which fits because this is where the movies and the books turned dark as well.
By the fourth game however…that’s where the quality of the games went down. The radical change in gameplay style didn’t help and it was so hard to navigate through the different levels was broken. I didn’t even know where I was going half the time. The only parts that weren’t broken, I think, were the first challenge in the Tri-Wizard Tournament and the part where you have to rescue everyone at The Qudditch world cup after the Death Eaters attack the camps.
I basically stopped after game four because I was more engrossed in the films and books than the games. I was so disappointed with four because it had so much potential!
I don’t know if you’ve played the first three games for the PC or a console or a hand-held system, but trust me Angry Joe; the first three games are a lot better and a lot more fun on the PC than these last two games on the XBOX 360.
Damn that’s all true!! Don’t know about the third but I played the first two games and they were actually pretty awesome, it’s such a shame that they dropped so catastrophically to an almost 3 hour crappy shooter =(
fully agree with this post.
It’s a shame to see how these games have degraded over the course of time.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is where the games started getting terrible. I recommend the first three (well, at least Chamber and Prisoner) on the gamecube (don’t know about any other ports) highly, they have huge nostalgia for me. You really should give them a chance.
Oh EA…. what have you become?
Someone should play through this, and time all the parts that artificially lengthen the game and then subtract that from the total playtime.
Actually, the other games for the gamecube and ps1 are pretty good. It played sort of like the game ‘Bully’ And it wouldn’t surprise me if rockstar drew some inspiration for the gameplay from these.
They do have the rpg elements and room for exploration and sandboxing a bit. It’s a shame the graphics were close to terrible, but what do you expect from movie tie-ins, right?
Anyway, it’s just too bad that this is how they choose to end like this, it could have been a great game series on its own. So I just wonder why they deviated from the original gameplay mechanics like that…
Rockstar drew inspiration from old Harry Potter games?Um no, no they didn’t, Rockstar has been making games before any Harry Potter games were even released. One of the first sandbox games that Rockstar made is called Body Harvest and it was for the N64.You basically roamed around an overworld killing aliens before they destroyed humanity. That game was influenced by older sandbox games that existed on the PC, way before Harry Potter was even a concept.
That’s not what I meant. I meant the Rockstar might have drawn some inspiration for Bully from this. With the school system and side questing.
Of course has Rockstar been around long before any of those games.
I’m not saying they copied anything, but there are similarities between the early Happy Potter games and Bully that might have been drawn from it. That’s it.
Actually the gamecube chamber of secrets was actually pretty good. it really one of the only harry potter games i recommend to anyone who wants to play a harry potter game.
I also could recommend the Game Boy Colour game of Chamber of Secrets! It was a great RPG! A little bit like old Final Fantasy titles, combat wise. There were sidequests/side activities/good minigames, an actually kinda deep combat, a very good atmoshpere and those chocolate frog cards to collect, which were also usable in combat.
You could also trade them with your real-life friends.
It was simply awesome, every fan should have played it!
I would still play it, but my GameBoy died last year…I might use an emulator now.
hey i have a great idea why dont we make a game less than 3 hours long and sell it full price. Also while were at it lets stamp harry potter on so everybody will want to buy it. corpret cammander what do you think
i know how u feel. iv spent 35 bucks on a game that only lated 1hr 1 fucking hr.. and i don’t remember what it was cuss it sucked and i ene’ed up smashing it cuss i couldn’t get my mouny back.
What should be next is a Harry Potter RPG which you are your own character but you play through every single movie/book!
Well, there are Harry Potter RPG’s on game boy, and were very good games for Game Boy standards…
Is it just me, or can OTHER people see that this game could have been GREAT. Easter Eggs, from things not mentioned in the movie, a better story (more epic scenes like when Ron smashes the locket), more complex spells (if I gotta protect someone I want to cast some defensive magic, shields, etc.), honestly, this game had POTENTIAL but was wasted…
Also- the beginning games are NOTHING like these. They were made a while back (not so great graphics) but I remember actually enjoying them somewhat- especially the Chamber of Secrets game. There were flying lessons, classes, you could walk through the castle and then go to sleep in a dorm (though not amazing, I felt they were heading in a good direction- a possible Harry Potter RPG, if you will). They were not shooters at all and I’m sad that they transformed into this awful monster of BLAH.
As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m embarrassed to have the achievements of this game on my xbox :/ I suffered through it and thinking back on it, I don’t know HOW I did it. I must have been terribly bored that day.
Honestly, and maybe no one else will agree with me, but I think Harry Potter would be perfect as a point and click adventure game. Imagine, you could explore the entire Hogwarts castle, examine all the cool stuff in it, talk to fellow wizards/witches, solve problems using spells, potions, etc. It would be cool!
this game took everything I loved and cared about into a HUGE CLUSER-F**K! I don’t buy games that often but when I watched your review, I definitely wasn’t going to even think about these games. I mean DH P2 is basically CALL OF DUTY: HARRY POTTER EDITION (NOW IT GUN WANDS!) I looked away when you casted oblivion but Im going to cast it on myself.
Angry Joe, DO NOT judge the other games By What you suffered in Deathly Hallows. They are FAR FAR Superior games. They’re puzzle based adventures with mystery and intrigue!
It’s like Saying the PREVIOUS marvel vs. Capcom games are complete SELL OUTS because the current one became a sell out with Ultimate Marvel vs. capcom 3. You SEE where I’m coming from?
yo i love angry joe show he is so right like voice of the people right
Harry Potter sorcerer’s stone game was good when i was very young
the older games were puzzle based games not shooters
I didn’t even like the lego version.
The games are pretty fun the earlier on they are. The first 3 games are good, the 4th sucks, the 5th is ok, 6th too, and, apparently, the Deathly Hollows is horrible.
Harry potter 1 on PS1 was THA BEST for me
The first three games were awesome. Open world hogwarts exploration with quidditch mini games, dungeons, and puzzles. They went downhill after prisoner of azkahban. Those games were my childhood!
SO MANY props for using 3 Inches of Blood!
I remember the first 3 games being really fun, with lots of puzzles and universe information. I was so disappointed in everything after the third game.
Yet another bad Movie Tie in, blame short development times.
Well, that’s every non sports licensed EA game for ya
