Deus Ex is still the pinnacle of gaming. A very nice sequel but could easily have been a stand alone game without trying to link itself to the series, which is why it suffers.
I love this game and still play it every once in a while! i have huge expectations for the next one!
My one real problem with this game (aside from being a prequel) is that while the game does an excellent job of allowing you to play how you want, whether you want to massacre all, slip by quietly, or somewhere in between, it almost goes out of it’s way to make you feel guilty for not going all stealth all the time, or for killing people.
And the about the prequel part, I always felt the series should’ve got with the approach that each game was a separate independent story that wasn’t linked in anyway, but centered on the same themes. The story here is pretty good and all, I just pictured the series being another way than it is.
Either way, 8/10 is the score I’d give too, so good on ya Joe!!
Heres my quick take on HR:
For a play as you want game, very early they tell you to whenever possible sneak around people. NO NO NO! If your game prides itself on play as you want gameplay then it is very wrong to tell you to do anything.
The stealth is ok but unrealized, the mod where you can tell how much lighting your in is stupid. There are very little areas where that possible, as in there is no splinter celling around. Its more of a cover system game, combined with quick cloaking got me almost everywhere I needed to go with almost no aug’s.
The hacking was really great, didnt like that you AUTO stood up to hack something getting you noticed by the guards. Did not like that at all.
The full on fire fights are awesome but easy with the cover system. The fully upgraded pistol and revolver are stupid powerful. Silenced, armor penetrating rounds? Yup. Exploding revolver rounds? yup. Pretty cool guns to play with all in all.
The only way this game should be played is NO RELOADS! It breaks the system or dynamic challenges and fights. What happens when your stealth approach fails? Reload? NO NO NO! Keep playing and have to adapt to the game. There is no real penalties for fucking up a mission aside from getting the ghost and operator experience boosts. Also other rooms are not affected by your actions in others most of the time which i think is really too bad because it offers no real assentive for proceeding with the mission after to fuck up. Although you have to opportunity to take each room stealth or guns.
As with most games its what you put into it. If you hold to your Role playing, i just in my head imagine that the whole area is on high alert. They could of took a page from splinter cell and as the more alarms you trip the guards get upgraded with more patrols and such. Nothing like that here and it hurts the game in those tense moments where you realize your actions in the previous room meant nothing.
Solid 7/10
i had to sell it back to gamestop because a tiny scratch on the disk made it stop working god dame it and i only saw 3 of the 5 or 6 endings
This was a great game. Bought it, finished it, sold it, and no seriously thinking of buying it again! Actually I even regret selling it in the first place!
I like how you first say “Who wouldn’t want to be a 15-men strong cyborg?” and imidiately follow it up with “I HATE FAKE!”. Contradiction much?
Bought this game 2 times. I regret nothing! 9 out of 10 in my book
Great gameplay, augmentation system really changes the gameplay, impressive story and dialogue system. Now, 3 months after finishing the game I still thinking about it. Every day I find some something that was hidden in the story. Speaking about the ending (SPOILER ALERT ON) i think the best ending is where you let people choose the future. As Adam said it’s not up to Sarif or Taggart or someone else to decide in which direction humanity should move. People should decide – if someone oppose implants thats fine and if someone support implant it’s their business. (SPOILER ALERT OFF)
It looks like a great game but probably takes itsef a little bit too seriously for my tastes. Still, if it’s what you’re in to!
I would give it a 7. Great game, great detail, great combat. But the game is so fustrating and hard I gave up and sold my copy. If you love 99.99% impossible games, you will love this. Crank it on “Give me a challenge” And you will rip your hair out guarenteed.
Well, I feel really lucky because I got the whole collection for $8 during the Steam Summer Sale!
Personally, I found the protagonist’s voice to be more akin to Clint Eastwood with a couple packs of cigarettes thrown in.
This game is AMAZING. It is 2012 and the game is still one of the best out of there. I just got it for 10 bucks and I loved all of it. Challenging, original and beautiful in everyway. From hand to hand combat to basic decisions, everything is meaningful. You could still play it as Mass Effect 3 with all those combat rolls and taking cover or sneak around like ninja taking everyone out from behind. I even managed to finish game without killing anyone (besides bosses) on hardest difficulty which I found to be quite challenging and very realistic.
I bought it using steam with 13 euros.
You’re right Joe, now that I played it, i know.
I feel like a theaf.
I almost wished to go back and paying it at least 40!
Because the game is so damn good!
got it fore

[...] other, more talented Internet personalities have already said, Deus Ex is about questioning the line between man and [...]
its cool that you have to save up the ammo and shit….love to search for it… makes it real. but thats my opinion.
I totally LOVED the game, but im a stealth freak so. although sometimes hahaha i cant help myself lurking in the darkness like……..shit there are 12 guys there hahhaha…omg no i shouldnt ……no…haha…no….AAAAARGH ratatatatataa. hahahaha and still fuckem all up. although what i do most is pick em off 1 by 1 and let the other guys scratch there heads and when there are just a few left masacre them ninja style with those 2 elbow blade haha.
But serious i felt like being Adam ingame i totally lived the part….awesome
I really enjoyed this, up till the end. The whole…..’button for ending’ thing was really lackluster.
Yeh. Doesn´t matter which quests you do or not, you´l get same four ends. If it was better done, this was a great RPG, instead of very good. 8/10
The ending (button choice) was awesome man i was like shiiiit what is more moral
I bought this game on Angry Joe’s recommendation, for which I thank him. My only disagreement is that Joe should have mentioned the boss fights as a flaw.
I bought it because i loved the first one (didnt buy the second though because it didnt fit in) Deus Ex is the second Metal Gear Solid for me man
My personal Game of the year. The only bad thing about this game is that the boss battles are all major letdowns. Other than that the game is friking awesome.
Bought it, played it, loved it
This was easily game of the year in 2011 for me. The ending may have been an A) B) C) D) choice but all of them were great in my opinion.
The article you have written is brilliant. Your information is very well founded and presented in such a convincing way. I have read many articles on this subject, but by far, yours is the best.

Always best reviews!
This is a great and informative post.Well, the points given were facts that could never go wrong. I have visited so many pages with the same discussion and topics
Great review and it’s very positive, which is kind of unusual for Angry Joe, but it shows, that there are some pretty good games out there.
[...] och verkade vara både intelligent och påminna om Blade Runner. Det kan verka paradoxalt att Angry Joes recension, som var väldigt positiv, var det som fick mig att tveka. Anledningen var egentligen ganska enkel: [...]
Speak english man! I live in scandanavian too (In denmark), but we need to speak english so the other´s understand us!
I finally got the game and it is quite good, with all of the augs being useful in some way, except for the worthless cloaking device. Multiple ways to solve a problem is nice. Just pretend the Cloaking Device aug doesn’t exist. Of all the options, it is by far the most worthless. All it does is eat praxis kits and batteries like candy yet does very little in return. I spent the whole game wasting more and more pts into that, more batteries, on top of energy items I bought just TRYING to get something out of my growing wasted investment. It was a total waste. I coulda used those points for the super jump/fall/armor I never maxed that would have helped so much more. Don’t want any kits on it. Put them into armor to kill your way through the game or max hack/travel augs to avoid combat. One or the other.
Also, dump your pistol and shotgun asap and never use them except to vendor for extra cash. The pistol never has any ammo drops past the first area(aka pre china town) and the shotgun has such a pathetic range it isn’t worth carrying. The only use I found for it was mowing down the zombie ppl at the end of the game since they all bumrush to melee range. Your “machine pistol”(Which is actually a SMG) and machine gun(automatic assault rifle) are your best weapons. Sniper is really good too for stealth and long range pick offs. I recommend carrying that too and buying all the ammo for it you can at shops(Otherwise ammo will be rare). 1 shot quiet kills at long range = win. It’s really nice to have on a rainy day.
don’t kid yourself. The armour doesn’t make enough difference in the late game (when all the enemies have machine guns) to be worth the expense whilst if you’re playing a stealth or non-lethal game the cloak is invaluable when you’re taking on groups of guys together or avoiding cameras and turrets.
The really worthless stuff are the hacking options that give you extra info about nodes and increase you’re fortify rating. All you need are the hacking level and turret/bot hack powers all the rest of the hacking stuff and most of the stealth move powers as well are really useless.
Cloak can save your ass if you use it right though.
I dunno Joe, there was some good shit to this review, but a lot of the ideas come across as ‘rip-off’ worthy to what others have already done. Sure you credit the folks who did them first, but i dunno.
The smile started to leave mah face there.
The original Deus Ex came out in 1999.
So really, pretty tough for this one too be a ripp off. It takes inspiration from Blade Runner, yes, but it puts another take on that and the entire Cyberpunk theme.
My homage to the best game ever!

Awesome review joe, had me in hysterics through the entire video. I have been waiting for this title for a while, still gonna head out and purchase soon as funds clear. To say I love this game is an understatement.
Another great review Joe!
Personally I think you should review new games closer to its release because I really appriciate your opinion on games, and it is really a waste of effort of such a review if most people bought it already. Most gamers buy their games on release or a short while after and so it makes a review of a game after two weeks a bit redundant.
You are fair and not corporate infected or biased, which is a rare feat amongst Game journalists. I really think you will be able to get more viewers if you somehow managed to release your reviews closer to the actual release dat of a game.
wow i like this!
Adult Future World. Sounds like my kind of game.
And I totally agree Joe, I also despise fake.
