Deus Ex is still the pinnacle of gaming. A very nice sequel but could easily have been a stand alone game without trying to link itself to the series, which is why it suffers.

My one real problem with this game (aside from being a prequel) is that while the game does an excellent job of allowing you to play how you want, whether you want to massacre all, slip by quietly, or somewhere in between, it almost goes out of it's way to make you feel guilty for not going all stealth all the time, or for killing people.

And the about the prequel part, I always felt the series should've got with the approach that each game was a separate independent story that wasn't linked in anyway, but centered on the same themes. The story here is pretty good and all, I just pictured the series being another way than it is.

Either way, 8/10 is the score I'd give too, so good on ya Joe!!

Heres my quick take on HR:

For a play as you want game, very early they tell you to whenever possible sneak around people. NO NO NO! If your game prides itself on play as you want gameplay then it is very wrong to tell you to do anything.

The stealth is ok but unrealized, the mod where you can tell how much lighting your in is stupid. There are very little areas where that possible, as in there is no splinter celling around. Its more of a cover system game, combined with quick cloaking got me almost everywhere I needed to go with almost no aug's.

The hacking was really great, didnt like that you AUTO stood up to hack something getting you noticed by the guards. Did not like that at all.

The full on fire fights are awesome but easy with the cover system. The fully upgraded pistol and revolver are stupid powerful. Silenced, armor penetrating rounds? Yup. Exploding revolver rounds? yup. Pretty cool guns to play with all in all.

The only way this game should be played is NO RELOADS! It breaks the system or dynamic challenges and fights. What happens when your stealth approach fails? Reload? NO NO NO! Keep playing and have to adapt to the game. There is no real penalties for fucking up a mission aside from getting the ghost and operator experience boosts. Also other rooms are not affected by your actions in others most of the time which i think is really too bad because it offers no real assentive for proceeding with the mission after to fuck up. Although you have to opportunity to take each room stealth or guns.

As with most games its what you put into it. If you hold to your Role playing, i just in my head imagine that the whole area is on high alert. They could of took a page from splinter cell and as the more alarms you trip the guards get upgraded with more patrols and such. Nothing like that here and it hurts the game in those tense moments where you realize your actions in the previous room meant nothing.

Solid 7/10

This was a great game. Bought it, finished it, sold it, and no seriously thinking of buying it again! Actually I even regret selling it in the first place!

I like how you first say "Who wouldn't want to be a 15-men strong cyborg?" and imidiately follow it up with "I HATE FAKE!". Contradiction much?

Bought this game 2 times. I regret nothing! 9 out of 10 in my book
Great gameplay, augmentation system really changes the gameplay, impressive story and dialogue system. Now, 3 months after finishing the game I still thinking about it. Every day I find some something that was hidden in the story. Speaking about the ending (SPOILER ALERT ON) i think the best ending is where you let people choose the future. As Adam said it's not up to Sarif or Taggart or someone else to decide in which direction humanity should move. People should decide - if someone oppose implants thats fine and if someone support implant it's their business. (SPOILER ALERT OFF)

It looks like a great game but probably takes itsef a little bit too seriously for my tastes. Still, if it's what you're in to!

I would give it a 7. Great game, great detail, great combat. But the game is so fustrating and hard I gave up and sold my copy. If you love 99.99% impossible games, you will love this. Crank it on "Give me a challenge" And you will rip your hair out guarenteed.
