Disappointing : PS3 Move Heroes
This game that had a real good potential soon fell flat on it’s feet after I started playing this.
I would list Skyrim in the top but I didn’t play it til the new year and Call of Duty would be over 1 step of Warhammer. Oh did that hurt? T
SKYRIM AS #1
I do feel Skyrim is a good game, but it is falling a little short in some aspects. I did expect Joe to put it number one, but I did mention to him that after his fair and unbias opinion on Saint’s Row 3, he should do a retrospective on Skyrim to point out some of its flaws.
The low res issues with installing the game to the PS3 HD, and the poorly transposed PC UI make the experience a little less than grand. Also to date some game-breaking guild quest bugs haven’t yet been fixed, and while NPCs do comment now on dropped items, my personal gripe (and this is all it is, personal) is that they won’t pick them up and take them with. I always thought the game could use more dynamic interaction in that way, not just in some dialog options.
You still are the only character actually making a difference in the game world and to that end it ‘still’ feels like nothing happens without you.
For those of you who are drastically ‘thunmbs down”-ing all the comments that are addressing that Skyrim is a little less than stellar, I think you may just be lost fanboys and aren’t willing to see some valuable criticism. The game is good, but it’s not perfect.
So, how come LoL makes it into a top ten when DotA, HoN, and Dota 2 don’t? LoL is the worst of the bunch as it’s horribly different than the original DotA yet wears the term “DotA Clone” with pride. Moba games are about one thing, emulating DotA in a more modern feel, and LoL fails that in all fronts. Yeah, the moba genera is the best genre on the market, but why is the worst game of the best genre sitting so high up?
I mean, you didn’t see LoL in the MLG, the Star league, or the biggest e-sport event of 2011, Dreamhack Winter. It’s a stain on professional gaming.
First off, DotA has been out for years, and it’s a mod. Of a game that came out almost a decade ago. It doesn’t really qualify for a Top 10 2011 list. As for DotA 2, it didn’t have an official 2011 release, so same rule applies. HoN I haven’t heard of so I can’t comment on that.
But most importantly, this isn’t your list. Feel free to give your opinion, but this is Joe’s list. He loves LoL Dominion, and has poured much of his free time into it because he enjoys it. As I respect his opinion, I will be giving LoL and every other game on this list I haven’t tried yet it’s fair shake because I respect his opinion.

DOTA isn’t new and isn’t even its own game, it’s a CUSTOM MAP ADD ON. Heroes is crap. DOTA2 isn’t even out yet. Do I need to add more?

While yes LoL did start off as a “Dota Clone” it has since evolved into its own game with its own style and stats.It has its own distinct game mechanics and play style.and cant be compared to dota as if it were a clone.
Although i will agree that HoN is just a dota clone and has been nothing more…although now a days it has its own heros instead of just older version of dota heros, But still HoN is the bottom of the ladder.
But yes dota is the best of the AoS style maps and AJ should play it or Dota 2(Which isnt complete and isnt the whole experience)

Very rare? It leaves people unable to finish their quests or even the game itself, forcing them to start over and running risks of it happening all over again. Might not have happened to you but it has happened to allot of other players, hence all the complaining about it.
And I am asking you this, enlighten me with your counter argument because I have yet to see one.
Game of the year for me is deus ex human revolution
Not that anyone will read this, but here’s my top 5 off the top of my head.
1. Skyrim
2. Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (why has no one mentioned this game?)

People forget Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword becuz not many people have a Wii anymore it’s mostly just Xbox, PC, PS3 to most ppl but I agree with you
Skyward sword is just another Zelda game. That’s it. It isn’t bad… but it’s hardly “best of the year” material. If I saw it on your list, I’d stop reading the list immediately. It’s a tired old formula which most of its own fans are getting sick of, just like Call of Duty, another genre of names which I am glad didn’t waste a spot on his list. If a game is barely any different than the previous ones in its series, then you shouldn’t bother listing it.

Of course they’ll be similar, otherwise it wouldn’t be a Zelda game. But at least it only comes once every few years and each game tries to do something new and different. What does COD try to do each year? See if they can sell map packs for more money?
How can you say Skyrim is the best RPG when it is’nt an RPG to begin with, the NPC’s have zero personality and depth + you never talk to them much, you just get fetch quests from them.
Also the game may seem huge at first, but if you actually sink lots of time in it you realize that the game is pretty simple afterall and that they reuse the same puzzles, animations, script-events, enemies, NPC dialogues and overall VA’s everywhere. But at least they got rid of the most annoying bugs though, at least for the PC version.
TL;DR: Good mindless action game, not better than Daggerfall or Morrowind though.
(and fuck the stupid jokes and memes that Skyrim spawned)
FINALLY someone has the balls to say it. SKYRIM IS NOT AN RPG! I would give you 1000 thumbs up if i could.
What? No SpaceChem? Not even as an honourable mention? I guess Joe is not the puzzle solving type?
Still, it is the Indi game that can go toe to toe with any of the triple A’s if you’re a fan of hard core puzzle games and I’m sure I’ve sunk more time into SpaceChem than I did in Skyrim.

While skyrim defenetly deserved it’s top position, I still think the trainwreck PC release should be mentioned. Constant crashes and uncountable bugs completely ruined my first 200 hours or so.

Pretty good list Joe, although I’m not sure if you can actually count Dominion because that is just a game mode to a game that has already been out 2 years I believe. But I still play League as if it were crack since you made your first video, so much so that I will probably be stalling my planned move to Old Republic in favor of buying more League hero skins. I was going to move WoW->OR but am instead most likely just going to sit on League for a while in between.
I finally hit lvl30, with 2 full pages of T3 runes,(My name is DrainBlut) and once you do that – that’s when it really starts to get intense. Now I am saving up for more heroes and still want more skins. Btw, this link has screen shots of all of the skins:

Good list. Skyrim is definitely my #1 pick. I need to get Ace Combat now. Joe got me convinced. That’s good marketing for Ace Combat as I would have over-looked it.

Thor, Duke Nukem, Mindjack, Harry Parry; Green Lantern might get a slot too depending on competition.(It’s REALLY bad) Trust me that’ll be his list.

10.gears of war 3 a satisfying conclusion to an awesome series
9. deus ex 3 the ending was quite dissapointing and my choice of gameplay didnt feel like I changed the storyline (like be stealthy and listen in on a meeting or go guns blazing and miss key plot points that could help you later) but it still kicked ass
8. super mario 3ds in this one peach tries to escape from her captors at least
7.devil survivior overclocked: a remake I know but I enjoyed the hell out of this game
6.uncharted 3 its was the same old from the second one but it still delivered an epic story
5.sonic generations a sonic game done right
4.mario kart 7 for fans of racing games and mario its a must have
3.final fantasy 4 collection: while the two sequels were a bit boring (though I did love that mysterious girl theme its pretty awesome )its a must buy for people who are fans of this final fantasy.
2.L.A. noir finally a game for detective noir fans though I myself am not a fan of that genre I enjoyed everyone of the mysteries that were required to be solved (though I wouldve wanted to see that earl guy get his ass kicked abit considering what kinda of bastard he is)
1.thor god of thunder well it would be if I was a moron or its really fucking skyrim though the main quest was its drawback and small glitches here and there that well didnt bother me much this is a must buy for any gamer even those who are not fans of rpgs is been like two months since ive playing and Im still not bored and I get the feeling amazing dlc is coming but what kind of quest line could top the shivering isles where you become a daedra prince maybe going to the heavens and fighting alonside the 9 divines and becoming one yourself that would be awesome, or maybe taking the fight to the thalmor.

I really cannot believe the praise that skyrim gets, with annoying puzzles, semi frequent freezes, and random overpowered bear or saber toothed what ever the fucks on the road, skyrim earns my 8/10 a good game but nobody dares mention its flaws. Its really annoying when a dragon appears, triggering an epic fight, you try to shoot it, but it starts attacking random forest creatures, so you spend 20 min chasing it. After about 70% of skyrims forest life has been destroyed, the dragon turns toward you, and proceeds to nose dive into the ground and then pull up in an impossible fashion. After it does this for the 5th time and you have stopped laughing, you fire your lighting bolts and force it to land, and then just before you kill it, a bounty hunter stops you for a dialougue box to say hes about to kill you but a random bear walks up, kills the dragon, and then you. Isnt skyrim great?
That’s because it’s pro’s heavily outweigh it’s cons. Also “Annoying puzzles”? They’re so easy! Portal 2 had far more annoying puzzles. Also, it’s hilarious moments like what you just explained that make the game fun! Linearity is boring, you always know what’s going to happen, but what you just said about the bounty hunter, the dragon, the bear, and deforestation, I WISH that kind of stuff happened MORE in the game. even the bad random encounters are memorable. I think you’re missing something with this game, because it’s easily a AAA, 10/10 game from that concept alone.
Yes it has flaws (Minor glitches, and… that’s about it), but since when has that ever stopped a great game? Some of the greatest games in HISTORY have some pretty big flaws (Games like Zelda, Deus Ex, Resident Evil, Fallout, Final Fantasy, and MANY others have things people really don’t like and Skyrim is no exception). The game may be an 8/10 for you, but the popular vote will remember his game as a 9/10-10/10. Also, if this game deserves an 8/10, what is a game like CoD (Easily a 6/10 or 7/10) to you? Is it also an 8/10? if so you’re mistaken.
Minor and game-breaking glitches mind you, and allot of them. Dialog is very limited in this game as opposed to the previous installments and while Skyrim offers a huge amount of content, most of it is dull, boring and short. Combine this with actually not being able to influence anything other then what quests you tackle and you got relatively short and repetitive gameplay.
PC version is poorly done as is the PlayStation 3 version and why Joe did not take this carelessness of Bethesda into account is beyond me. He did it with Battlefield 3 so why not with this game?
I could stand here and counter that argument, or I could not care for your ignorance. either way, I’ll ask you, list me the “game-breaking” glitches that there are apparently “allot of”. If so, I have encountered none. While I am blissfully unaware of the glitches on the computer, that still doesn’ account for the PS3 and 360 version, both which I have played extensively mind you, and have found only MINOR annoyances at best. As for the “Dull, boring, and short” content, what are you complaining about? Most content in an RPG is notorious for being either “generic fetch quests, assassinations, and mundane tasks”, this is what MAKES an RPG. What YOU might find boring, another might find intriguing, personally I liked all the quests just fine. I never felt too bored, I always felt busy like I was actively working in a real environment, and THAT is the key, feeling engrossed in the world. While the Dialogue may not have all the branching paths of other, or even older games, there is so much talking, and so many conversations (Enough to fill a library of motion pictures) that I become fascinated to the point I don’t care. The voice acting, and animation is top-notch and I feel more like I’m in a movie than an actual game. I could never not get this feeling when playing this game. Of course now that the game is popular (Which I feared this might happen) there will be haters, nitpicker, and hipsters batting against the game. Before it was a beacon of hope that good games don’t need to follow the trend of blandness like CoD and while this is indeed a masterpiece, I’ll start meeting more people like you who will hate the game just to anger the popular vote. I stand firmly against CoD for the right reasons, it’s a marketing ploy and a completely bland and repetitive shooter that shouldn’t deserve so much praise. While others will stand against Skyrim for the wrong reason, because it’s a good game.

As for the boring and dull part, please. I am not comparing Skyrim to other game’s, it is in a league of it’s own but as in comparison to it’s predecessors it leaves allot to be desired. I cannot understand how you can deny that this game lacks variation. Not only this but also dialog, voice acting, player influence, A.I. and narrative.
This game is packed with quest that are simply that, fetch quests. Guild quest should make up for this but the game only offers a handful of them. Combine this with cardboard characters, cardboard personality’s and no social dialog, and you got yourself a world where your character can hardly feel related to.

Most of those terrible glitches are either VERY rare, or you have to have some kind of outrageous circumstance for it to even happen. I stand by my opinion and say the glitches still aren’t that bad and don’t take away from the game entirely. As for you’re complaining (again) I have given up. You’re a hipster and against the popular vote and there for you will stand by your belief and not change what so ever.
this game is a master piece, and you’re just ignorant. I’m not saying it’s perfect, I’m not saying it doesn’t have problems or that there aren’t people who don’t like it, but what I am saying is that it’s an amazing game and you sicken me with your ignorance.

Here’s mine, I’ll just try for a top 5, there are too many games to think of for a top 10 lol.
1) The Witcher 2 ; looove it, simply gorgeous to look at and the complex politically charged story is very interesting with many good characters, love the combat style and thought the ending was appropriate.
2) BF3 ; Another gorgeous PC game and it’ll definitely be my go to online FPS for a long time. Many different ways to play with different kit combinations and vehicles, some fun and different game-types, the B2K expansion is a must have as well.
3) Shogun 2 ; So much to like about this game with the great new design they have with multi-player and the vastly improved AI both on strategic map and during battles. Fun naval combat as well, and all the special agents play important roles.
4) MGS 4 ; heh it’s from 2008 but it’s still top notch IMO. Love the new control scheme compared to older MGS games, the environments are stunning, the story is interesting as usual and there are some mind blowingly awesome cut scenes to be seen.
5) Dirt 3 ; The most fun I’ve ever had in a racing game. Once again a game with great graphics (lol I’m probably a bit of a graphics whore) and a fun damage engine. Lots of rally tracks and just really tight controls. The gymkhana events are an interesting addition but mostly I just love the rally racing.

I love it how some people have nothing better to do than bitch and moan about things that they don’t correlate to their “exact” ideas.
My top ten of 2011:
1. Skyrim
2. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
3. Dark Souls
4. Dead Space 2
5. Gears of War 3
6. Crysis 2
7. Space Marine
8. Mortal Kombat (a surprise for me as I don’t like fighting games)
9. Red Faction: Armageddon
10. Rage
These games would most likely be really high in the above list, however I have not played them mainly down to running out of money:

Uncharted 3
LA Noire

My biggest disappointments:
1. Dragon age 2:
They got some things right. The visuals were much better, the combat is great, the menus were good, and I like the fact that your character is voiced and has the conversation wheel. However the things that were wrong were far more serious. Poor story, boring characters including Hawke, re-used areas, only based around one city which was dull, too many things dumbed down that didn’t need to be i.e inventory.
2. Duke Nukem Forever:
Do I really need to explain?
3. Killzone 3:
Overall a decent shooter but it is the same thing all over again, starting to get bored of this.
4. Homefront:
Linear as hell. 4 HOURS?! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
Good list Joe. Although i am suprised that Dance Central 2 did not make it to the list this time around because you loved the last one
