Shame on all those non-executive individuals who support this bill, for they are effectively asking to live in subservience to a corporate dictatorship! And shame on all those in government who support it, for they’re asking that the kind of freedom that many fought for in World War 2 be thrown away!
Corporations have far too many rights as it is, without giving them total, uncontested control of the internet. They like capitalism as long as it serves them but they start whining and complaining if it doesn’t go their way, forgetting that capitalism has no favourites. The only upshot of this bill is that it highlights the inherent danger of granting total power to any single entity, be they an individual, a group, corporation or indeed government; that that power WILL be abused. And once corporations have total control of the internet, what then? Will they start sanctioning people for not buying their products? After all, once you have total control of the internet – a major part of many peoples lives worldwide nowadays – then that is a relatively small boundary to over-step, by comparison!
I live in the UK and given how much it has already been Americanised, I can all too easily imagine similar bullshit being passed here at some point if SOPA wins!

Question 1: What is the status of this bill in the House of Representatives, or has it already passed the House?
Question 2: Aren’t you protected under parody/satire?
Let me shed some light on how this process works. A law, now called a “bill” as it isn’t live yet, will either start in the house or the senate(Depending on who wrote it). The house is 435 people, the senate is 100. In order for a bill to proceed past these 2 parties to become law, it needs to get a 50%+1 yes green light from both of these parties, then it hits the president’s desk. If it doesn’t get that from both, it doesn’t go any farther. So if you are talking to a “senator”, it is one of those 100 people. If it is a “representative”, it is one of the 435.
If it gets accepted by both parties and gets to the the president’s desk, he now gets his vote. If he says yes, then it is now law. If he says no, then it loops back around and it now needs a 2/3 majority vote on both parties. If that happens, it will then become law regardless of him saying no(Called over writing a veto, or something).
This is the process, and if the bill fails at any point, it dies or may be re-worded then tried again. It being re-worded is much more likely because they aren’t going to drop this as long as piracy exists, but this is what needs to happen. The bill is horrible for the internet and world in its current form. It needs to be edited so that our legitimate websites(FB, tgwtg, etc) are protected and can’t be shutdown just because an offended director didn’t like your review on one of his shitty movies.(If anyone ever reviews an Uwa Bol movie ever again you can bet he will have your site deleted/blocked. Think about that. Hollywood and game companies like EA will do the exact same thing.)
It needs to be edited so that it can ONLY target pirating websites, like the commonly known piratebay that every product owner hates. If you want to stop pirating, go after the websites like that, which allow you to easily pirate. Stay away from all the rest of us, we aren’t hurting anything. If you let this bill slide in its current form, you are handing complete control to people that can’t be trusted with any of it and will abuse it on every site they feel like doing it it. Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, tgwtg, angryjoe, they will all bite the dusk the second a company doesn’t like a negative review. This will be very easy for them to do because they will have total control of what gets shutdown or blocked. They are trying to buy their way to making this pass, and if it does, they will basically control the internet’s entertainment and freedom to review or express anything will cease to exist.
Its the Truth again bringing the Truth. I may not live in the U.S. But i know enogh that this bill is arbridging the freedom of speech and is taking the rights of the american people. To be frank the U.S. doesn’t really need this right now with the wallstreet protests, the slump in the europian market, and the growing tention between U.S. and IRAQ.
My point is that we don’t need this right now because if they passed the bill it would cause a chain reaction of protests and it would result in choas. And all of this just because they want to sell more movies well if anything it would make me buy less movies insted

The entire Channel Awesome debate in regards to SOPA and Protect IP got me interested. As such, I visited the Library of Congress’s website to read the details of both bills and garner a better understanding.
I also contacted both Senators from my state, Tennessee, who are cosponsors of the Senate bill. I wanted to hear their standings on the proposed bill and ask questions on what they view as piracy on the internet–since in recent years, the line has became hazy.
One of my Senators has already responded to my query. Piracy costs the United States economy a lot of money, so the Senate wants to make it easier for the Justice Dept to shake down websites that post illegal and counterfeit IP on the net. At the same time, they are working on failsafes that would allow websites to seek legal appeals if they feel they have been wrong.
While the wording of the bill might still be vague and could be abused, I think debating and alterations to the bill could make it a valuable tool in stopping online piracy–which is a leech on the world of entertainment and the economy as a whole.
Both Channel Awesome’s actions and the fact that my Senator responded give me hope for the future. The fact that politicians are willing to listen and answer the questions and concerns of everyday citizens, like you Joe, makes me feel like the system really does work. We just have to be willing to speak up and voice our opinion.

I can’t believe my ears when I hear about this, especially knowing it’s originating in the US…. where I thought individual freedoms and rights of expression were held in very high regard! The country really has gone to **** if the government is practically willing to sell the internet to corporations and allow them to censor the heck out of it…. (No offense American’s, just to your government!).
The most ridiculous thing is that it doesn’t even do anything to prevent piracy, which would seem to be the primary reason for the bill in the first place. All it does it lay down massive censorship for an entire country and sells the greatest tool for new artists, musicians, comedians, political analysts, etc to the already great and faceless corporations… totally a nonsensical bill.
There is a lot at stake if this gets passed and the internet has nothing to do with it IMO. This is just slanderous to the people of America, it’s simply robbing freedoms.
