But therein lies the problem, doesn't it? If you try to appeal to audiences at both ends of the spectrum you usually end up dissapointing both of them.
Sure you could choose not to play with the fantasy units, but your opponent still might, which would ruin the experience for a purist as well.
The question is: would a purist even pick that game up (and I am pretty convinced that purists are the main buyers of American Civil War games)? Personally, I don't think so.
There is little else that puts that game apart from other historic war games besides the "novelty units" and if you have no intention of using them in the first place, then why would you want to buy this particular product to begin with?

I may be wrong, but I think that this was an ill advised choice.

that's an awesome idea and i hope it will be used in the next total war game. but without singleplayer campaign this game can be boring. i mean, what's the point of creating an army then fighting with bot over again and again??Even multiplayer will get old quick unless they had some really cool features in store for us.

Looks neat but I worry it will end up like APOX. That looked cool too being like a Mad Max RTS with shooter elements. But then it felt like a unit spammy game that was mostly online only which is no fun if no one plays it.

Anyway yeah the game could be neat though I don't really understand the unit balance. What out of those guys could beat a tank? And how do single shot rifles compete at all with machine guns lol. But yeah I would definitely like to play the Confederates an give those yankees a whippin.

Actually, change history could be really fun. I 'm not a fan of the Civil War, but use steampunk arsenal in a tps way in a Strategy games, I' m in!
