I picked this up off of Amazon thanks to a great sale pointed out by CAG. I have to say the game is actually really good. Much better than the demo would have you believe. It feels like a mix of Vanquish, and Hard Reset. The voice commands are a little finicky so it’s certainly not flawless (Especially upon learning there are multiple endings based on your popularity with the NPC characters). But it’s a lot of fun to play through in spite of it’s faults (Mainly finicky voice commands, and some derivative playstyle/setting). Too bad it didn’t do better, would love to see a new, and improved sequel.
Why do you reject me so harshly Springboard? Why!!?
This game is awesome man. Ok not awesome but good. I gave it whole 8 out of 10. Don’t know about the xbox version but on PC it’s good. I mean no problems with Shooting. There is almost No shortage of ammo cause you can buy ammo and it costs like 100 in game money and characters are solid too. The ending is great. I don’t know if it has only 1 ending or something but it’s friggin’ great. I hooked up with Faye Lee The only chinese girl in the game and she’s hot and it was great! after the credits I got the ending I wanted the whole finale and last third of the game. So my opinion: It’s great and deserves 8 out of 10 on my scale of course.
Why 8? and not 9 or 10? because the disability of speech recognition system today is horrible. I mean yes it was kind of fun speaking rather simple words like great, ok, nice, no, yeah, nope, BUT other words like damn, f*ck, any sentence longer then one word except “love you” are almost impossible to register. That’s one point minus and the other point minus is that the game doesn’t bring anything new. I mean it’s like been there done that. Copy, Paste. But with that said the fights, the cutscenes they are good and a lot of fun. There even are some mildly tear jerking moments.
And last of all but not the least JAPAN. I mean I’m a huge anime lover and the japanese culture is like second culture to me. I love Japanese people, I love their culture and I love every friggin’ inch of Japan wholeheartedly. That’s why every time Japanese actors spoke, I was like Oh yeeees do it more often.
This game doesn’t look that great to me… stereotype heroes… horrible friendly AI… pointless squad commands… it’s just an average looking game. This is the type of thing Joe would give a 6 or 7. I think what I’d hate most of all is the ammo shortage. I hate that in shooters. If you played Gears of War, which this game looks quite similar to, then you know in those games they actually give you lots of ammo to shoot. They don’t send you the battlefield with almost no extra clips or shit.
I’m sorry Joe, but this preview review doesn’t do the game justice at all. Certainly it has a it’s flaws, but overall the game is an absolute blast. It blends well executed, Gear of War style shooting with the aesthetic of Final Fantasy 13 (both of which Im a fan of).
The story is fun if taken the right way. Don’t expect heavy handed drama like in Gears of War, instead I like to compare the story to a 90′s action comedy. It’s sort of like those action flicks you’d watch cos they’re stupid but fun (Tango & Cash, Lethal Weapon). Plus it has these long cut scenes, Metal Gear Solid style, that are a treat.
The relationship feature (called Trust in the game) DOES have an effect, not just in combat but it also changes the story and ending depending on your standing with your other team mates. You can even have a romantic sex scene with one of the characters if your Trust is high enough.
Sure, the characters are generic, but that’s one of the attributes that make it feel like a stupid but fun 90′s action movie, and they are somewhat interesting because they evolve as your trust with them changes.
And as for the voice commands, more often then not they do work, and it’s a fun distraction, but the game doesn’t hang it’s hat on this so you can’t really say anything negative about it. Besides, I applaud a game for trying to do something a little different, introduce a little newness to established trends. It’s an old school way of thinking and it adds a little something extra to the value and uniqueness of the game.
I think had you really reviewed this game you would have loved it Joe. It’s right up your alley. I got it on a Steam sale for PC and it really surprised me. I didn’t expect to play it long, but instead I got hooked and played it all the way through in almost a day. I loved it to pieces and I was pleasantly surprised. I strongly recommend you get the full game Joe, it would surprise you to, I think. Plus I’d love to hear an actual review of this from you
P.S. You can aim grenades, you have to pull the left trigger.
The game is cool, I’m playing it…
There are freakin awesome cutscenes, like the one a robot think that he is human and kills him self when he saw that he was a machine…
It could whoever had better weapon upgrades, since u can only upgrade the weapons of the characters and not the others…
Nice review – as allways…
But the new video player is a pain in the butt: IT WONT WORK WITH THREE MONITORS! I have the video in low quality stuttering over all three screens instead of a correct aspect ratio with a video on one screen. Please go back to the old player – if possible!
Because YouTube is about 1000% slower than your blip.tv server.
Best,
Timo
thumbs up if you thought the reputation meter meant something else. if you know what i mean.
I just have to say this, the first few seconds of this video brought back some trully (FUCKING!) frustrating emotions over the demo. Which cemented an early opinion of the game, maybe the full game doesn’t ave the following problems but frankly I don’t wanna wast my money to find out.
It plays exactly like Gears of War. That isn’t a bad thing in itself so long as its backed up by something unique like the trust feature, but that gets bogged down by the voice commands. To be honest it is nice to see bits o robot fly off their bodies and to see them wander and shoot without abandon when their heads are gone, something Locusts can’t do.
Voice commands are a pile of shit and eggs. Every time a squade mate asked me to issue a voice command for permission to do something the demo wouldn’t pick up my voice and everytime it did it was in combat, without context and had my guy say the most retarded thigs which just pissed off and confused my squad. “Stop” “I love you”
Whats worse is that my kinect picked up every vocal my squademates made and the demo interpreted that as a voice command, further confusing and infuriating my squad.
The final straw came from a point where I had to jump from a roof on to a giant robot to destroy its head. No matter how close it was when I jumped, I either missed or my character refused to find footing and slipped right off. Sliding back down the robot’s front, earning me more ayre from my squad.
A shit demo, for a near good Gears clone
I got a Marvel VS Capcom add.
WHAT.
THE.
FUCK.
Joe NEVER do a review of a game based on the demo, also if you play in it don’t play on the hard difficulty and then complane the games to hard. Iv played the full game on normle and hard and still had a lot of gun blitzing the robots.
I agree. Joe definitely sounds like he rushed to conclusion this time, but I’m sure that is only his first impression. The problem is, from what he says in this video, that he is judging the game by playing the demo. He should work on his charisma, which he lacks compared to other internet reviewers like Spoony and NC. He got the right attitude towards gamers, but he can’t really say his intent on the spot as much as he likes.
Also, the trust system DOES work. Sega just screw it up in the demo. And you CAN issue specific commands to specific characters by using a headset.
Come on Joe you can`t juge the entire game just by playing the demo! I Played with the full game and beat it twice. I was really suprise by how good it is. It`s a really solid 3rd person shooter with a great story. I think you should give the full game a try.
Angry Joe, when are you gona make a top 10 most anticipated games of 2012?
I just loved your pic on the 2011 games, and would like to see more.
The game is actully realy good, it touches uppon some realy deep philosofical topics and have an endgame that I did not execpt.
Did you play through the game? :-7
I’m totally fine with the story, it’s interesting, but the CG during the cutscenes is simply B.A.D. = BAD.
And I’m not all too sure about the reputation-system.
It’s fine to have something like that in a game, but what I’ve seen so far in Binary Domain, it’s simply stupid, because it’s way to obvious and it basically forces you to always say the nice thing. There doesn’t seem to be any room for you to play with the options and so on. If you don’t always say yes, then your teammates are not there for you and that always with the same few commands. I guess that can become quite pesky after a while.
The game looks interesting, but I think I’m gonna wait till it get’s at least a 30% markdown before I can justify a purchase.
buy this game joe.it can be our next awesome “mindjack” review.(just kidding).anyway, i think i’ll pass on this game. it look generic and boring as hell. plus, i need to save money for all of awesome games this year: mass effect 3 next week, risen 2, ghost recon future soldiers…
LOL
Nice one JOE!
I liked the part ur actually saying good things about the AI then ur teammate robot just screwed that moment!
I guess I’m gonna play this game!
I love how your guy is getting all those headshots, and he is like “ow – that annoyng bullets, kinda hurt”,
Like the new video format, doesnt lag as much as the previous one on the phone.
skinny asian chick?
That’s some racist exotified shiet.
Where’s the Asian Men nigga!?
The fact that the game has a system in it that allows the members of your fire team to outright refuse your commands is just ridiculous. You know what, Joe? In the military, we have a word for that. It’s called: Insubordination. An offence that will have you in a court marshal and, depending upon severity and circumstances, can be potentially punishable by the death penalty.
I think he knows that
Yeap, court marshal it is. It didn’t come clear tho were these guys mercs or soldiers. Makes the difference if they are hired guns.
Well luckily, its a video game, not the military, or a simulation of it that attempts to be at all accurate. More over, its a game that will likely be played more by children, sigh, not trained military soldiers. Must I go on? I’m in the military too, but I’ve got to say this, keep things in perspective.
Joe,you are aware your website is almost all of 13 Year Old’s thinking there funny right?100% right Patrick, but there are othere’s to
This game looks like a Great 6 Hour Game, then I beat it and try to get my money back,to many games are just to short, and once you beat them, there’s no incentive to play again, the ONLY game that I enjoyed over and over and did New Game + mode right was Dead Space 2
Dude, you’re supposed to add a space after a comma…
Joe, Patrick Sewell is my FB ,ill let you borrow my PS3 and give u my games,
