I had fun with SCV, I just wish the offline mode was beefed up. I’ve enjoyed my online battles and the crazy awesome custom characters people make. But the inability to fight my own creations for XP is a bit of a let down. And the story? -_- Two whingers having a whinge… and they should whinge too. WORST fighting styles in the game! I only beat the end bosses via CHEAP tricks because their fighting styles were so horribly bad.
But on the plus side for SCV, Online is awesome, rivals awesome, char custom is as always awesome, soundtrack awesome, graphics and presentation awesome. It’s really just little niggles that annoy me with this game.
Considering how you play a fighting game for it’s story, i’d like to see you review blazblue:continuum shift extend !
Also, i don’t think you should expect story from arcade mode, considering how it’s made for arcade machines; you ahve the story mode for the story
I agree with angry joe on the story the entire diffuculty changes for the last bosses Fom SUPER EASY to like Edge master cheap i beat it with siegfried whose style they butchered from SC 4 every new character is basicly a copy/paste style from their masters in SC 4 with minor tweaks the story sucked and since they took out the A+K string and a lot of other moves from old characters it felt like the characters had half the move list they should have had especially mitsu. and the character creation armors half of them are reused from SC 4. considering how great SC 2, 3 and even 4 were compared to this the game is like a giant face slap to me i would give it a 5/10 at best this game is a lazy attempt to make a fighting game.
-They dropped the ball on the character stories, that did exist in SC4. However i don’t know why you are bitching about the single player.
-They should explain the character back stories but really fighting games are meant for playing with friends or against people online.
-The tutorial is kinda bad for new players. Old players will understand it easy and will slip right into it.
-Also please don’t complain about difficulty spikes. Games that baby you around piss me off. They make the earlier part of the game easier so you can learn combos and moves. Then they make you have to actually try really hard.
-It is a bit much to expect the ability to make custom fighting styles. That would allow for the creation of broken characters with easy to use 0-death combos.
-In conclusion i like the review but a lot of your points come from a fighter-game noob perspective. A lot of us pro characters are left thinking, “what is he talking about?”
Holy crap, man. You couldn’t possibly be more unilateral than that.
When angry joe mentions that he was partially disappointed by the fact that you can’t create a custom fighting style for a character that you create. I think that the reason that they did that was to make sure that you cannot create an overpowered character. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses. Being able to to mix and match fighting styles would allow for overpowered custom characters.
Hi Jo,
go to the movelist and press the “help”buton(Y or X).
I only have the PS3-Version so…
square+select = you get char.specific infos and some help how to do combos
triangel*select = you can change the behavior of the CPU.
circle + select = display and perform all of the enemys moves (it helps you to practice IG)
The traning mode isn“t that bad (if you are able to read!!!).
The so called singelplayermode(arcade+story) is terrible! Why no one care about the singeleplayer anymore?? Fu…. rushed games!
But the Quickbattle simulates Onlineplaying/Rankmatches (for people how dont have internet?
And Jo, please take more time with an game bevor doing an review or recommend an game (sword of the stars 2 was more than disappointing).
(btw: i am for Austria and i have no idea of English grammar, sorry)
Yeah bro you should rivew KOF13
I still want to see you review KoF XIII. It doesn’t have all the characters I want and some of the characters are changed in ways I don’t like (Ralf and Clark), but the game is definitely a step in the right direction for SNK. The online play is better with the new patch and the little bit of dialogue and endings in Arcade mode are a nice touch.
I find it absolutely baffling that they dropped the ball on the storyline. Because they had a roster ‘reset’. Why replace already well established characters with new (and design-wise rather uninspired) ones and NOT bother to properly develop the story to flesh out their personalities etc. ?
Sure, from a pure fighting gamer standpoint it is not necessary, but I find these type of games endlessly more enjoyable if I actually cared about the cast. If they used the old characters and flopped the story it would still be disappointing, but at least their stories have already been given from the past iterations (barring IV). This is why I find the lack of story just absolutely unforgivable in this installment. The emphasis on the time-skip from the trailers gave me false hope for an improvement from SCIV in that department apparently.
“FREELANCER”!!!
……………………………………FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!! SC5 WAS COMING OUT IN JAN???!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK I WASN’T EVEN AWARE THAT IT WAS EVEN BEING LAUNCHED!! But I am glad the Angry Joe Army was Reviewing this game or I would have never that it was out for months! LONG LIVE ANGRY JOE!!!!
hey joe, could you review kof 13? i think this game really dose show how next gen fighting game should be like.and nice review on sc5 ,i think i will save the money .
I agree with your review on this game, ai really think they need to add a team mode, survial, maybe chronicle of the sword, a challenge tower, and an actual story mode! Team battle mode online and offline (mainly offline) becuase it will allow playyers to have fun making a universe within a universe (should probably add more custom slots), survial so players can test their skills against the computer with constant random battles. that quick battle mode is almost a joke on my disc, it’s always alpha partrokolas, omega pyrrah, kilk, edge master, and ely-what ever! Chronicle of the sword was pretty good to me actually i play it now to this day at least 12 times a year tops, (if you knew me personally thats alot!! lol), but it almost emulated an rpg, an okay one too, but that arcade mode was a major disappointment to me aswell!
By the way P.S to Angry Joe, I beat Legendary Souls, and you get nothing speacial for doing it, so that really makes its existence even more useless to me! they could have given you the throw back nightmare, seigfired, and cervantes designs, but no, nothing, nada! Maybe the characters if you haven’t already unlocked them.
They should borrow the elements of SC 3 for character creation, with the custom weapons and all.
Also the Chronicles of the Sword was so much fun, i’ve played it so many times just to get my characters to high lv. I was truly disappointed with SC 4 for not having those features, it felt like it regressed on content. I would play SC 3 over 4 and 5 any time.
2 words about your character Joe 1. Bad 2. Ass
After seeing Joe’s review Im in doubt about buying the game. I will like to test it first. Since I dont like unbalanced enemies. And Nightmare is a huge pain when it comes to fight. Although Im not an expert player I enjoyed Soul Edge and Soul Calibur for the Storyline since the first game.
Thanks for the review. I loved it ^^.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBIES
Sadly for you Joe, they ALREADY HAD CUSTOM CREATE A CHARACTER MODE IN 3 BUT TOOK IT AWAY!!!!
That ALWAYS pissed me the fuck off about 4. So sadly I don’t see custom character move sets coming back. But 3 is an excellent game, well worth the $5 or $8 you’ll find it for at used game stores
dialogue sucks!
they kept mentioning dogs
MvC3 ‘s training mode is the best.
Mortal Kombat has best Tutorial mode
Jill vs Lurker…LOL.
man SC after 3 is a joke! They only rushed SC5 just to improve Character Creation.
Only the n00bs and casuals will spend time making dumb characters instead of playing the game online.
lag online? because idiots still uses Wireless connection:/
great show
ass tites ass and tities come aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be honest I still like the very first game best. Personally I think that over the years fighting games have become quite ridicilous. Once pretty normal characters have been turned into silly looking clowns. Also nowdays its that stupid juggling system where you do like 10 hit combos by poking opponent in the air with finger so the player who plays the lamest way is considered the best. Most of the games are no more about making you care for the characters but just rushing through the game to collect somkinda points so you could buy some stupid as* sh*t like party hats or guitars to wear during fighting. It just makes me feel that the developers aren’t taking the games seriously anymore and just seem to think that the more sh*t they shovel into game – wether its any good or not makes it automatically better. Fist game with todays graphics would be awesome.
Ahem, just pointing this out,
Don’t you think your character spreads his legs a little TOO wide?
If Joe does not review team fortress2 for pc I will f***ing go to his house and kill him (not really) plus its free to play plz Joe i want to see if I am the only one who thinks teamfortress 2 is a 10/10
coolest thing about team fortress 2 is that their are updates atlist every 2 months or so. And thesee updates are for exemple new weapons to unlock. Check it out hipe i did not right all this for nothing. Do ittttt!!!!! for your biggest FAN!!!!!!!!
Just got to teamfotress2.com and download for free! no catch to it the only thing you can pay for (your choice) is for hats which you can already unlock with out paying but it takes longer. Also be aware that if you download tf2 you are going to have to download steam which is not a bad thing. Steam is great!
Mortal Kombat beats this game in every aspect
No character endings?!
Not buying. Simple as that.
No endings? not even on a higher difficulty? Damn!!!
I picked this game up first thing in the morning, and I love it.
However, I DO wish that the story mode was more developed, and where is the “weapon master” or “tower” mode? Is that the “Legendary Souls” mode?
@#$% is that hard….
ANyways, I still love this game. Me and my friends like playing the infinite training mode, beating
the living mansh&t out of eachother. It’s more cinematic that way. ^_^

Project Soul was given about one year to make this game (so I’ve heard) so its no wonder if there’s something lacking. What I’m more disappointed about is the new meter system and Guard Impact requiring it. SCV is copying too much other frachises and is turning into combo festivals like Tekken 6. Thankfully they aren’t that long but without life extensions in VS. modes, damage is still way too high.
Otherwise the game is awesome even with things I mentioned, as there are always something lacking or needs fixing in Soul Calibur and other fighting game franchises (X-factor, Rage + Bounce, Ultras, Balance, year long combos)
This is a very clear and well balanced review, and tells me exactly what I feared already about this game. I like the series, but after part 2 it got worse and worse, and now it seems to have hit rock bottom. The online is a welcome addition, but getting rid of core characters, and replacing them with badly designed replacements (Taki for example), you just don’t do that. Leave the original roster in, and add characters on top of that. Also, the guard system is stupid. It worked fine in Soul Blade (the original game) and there is no need to change that. With part 4 they already ruined the way blocking works, and now they punish you even more. Being able to fight defensively was one of the strengths of the series. I could do without the character creator, if it meant including more of the standard content that each game in the franchise has always had. If you’re going to make a sequel, adds stuff on top of what already exists. Don’t remove what the fans like. I will not be buying this game, and I used to be a fan. The special bar is also a terrible idea. It was broken in Mortal Kombat on the PS3, why add it to Soul Calibur when the original system worked much better? Don’t copy bad features from other fighters dammit!
Well Voldo, I have a new reason for wanting to kill you.
Great review Joe. Now if you’ll excuse me…*gets the phone number of Kratos* Hey Kratos, I got a job for you….
Tutorials for video games are totally lame…
I remember the days when players had to actually explore and learn things in video games. You wanna know the command for the fireball? Figure it out!
The very first thing we used to do when playing a new video game was to press buttons and try things out. Well designed games can teach the players while the games are being played, like Mega Man, like Legend of Zelda, like Street Fighter 2. These days, game developers want to insert these asinine tutorial modes for their poorly thought out games.
Tutorials are used as crutches for poor game design. It’s why games like Street Fighter never needed a tutorial. The game was designed well for players to jump in, play and LEARN the game.
Ivy sounds like a dude, didn’t know you swung that way Joe.
Ahhhhh………the Angry Army is going to shun me for this post…..
Hey Joe, I don’t think you know (or want to know for that matter) how much content is actually borrowed in this game (like 60% of the game is borrowed and 40% is actually original). You mention how it borrows elements from Capcom and Mortal Combat, but there is one more borrowed element that very few know about.
Yeah……..the knocking off of the armor/clothing pieces is actually borrowed from another fighting game; to be specific, the Battle Raper series.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Raper
Developed by the infamous Japanese Hentai video game developer Illusion Studios, I hope this series never reached the United States and would not recommend anyone checking this (or the developer) out. More information is provided in the wiki link I posted.
Yeah…..I think I will shut up now.
I don’t normally post very many comments, and this is probably why.
“In what part of retarted do you even find this kind of sh–!?” “Why the f— would you even want to!?” -CarotHacker on what goes on inside my brain.
Oh god…. I hears about “Battle Raper” on a “Top Ten most offensive video games in history” list.
I think it was just under “Rapeplay”(Made by the same dirt-bags), “Super Columbine RPG”, and “Ethnic Cleansing” (Yes, these games EXIST!), and was rated in the top 5 somewhere. I think it had a sequel! 0_0
I actually found the video I was talking about. Here’s the link:

I wont stop you from feeling disgusted people.
You could knock off peoples’ clothes in Art of Fighting, it’s nothing new.
actually Battle Raper is an hentai game and doesn’t count or shouldn’t count, another game already has the armor breaking which is Fighting Viper, made 1995
@Z and @xino: True, I wasn’t trying to start a battle rape in the comments, I was simply pointing out how much is borrowed in this game. (I’m going to get a lot of bad rap for what I write next ;P) But I actually slightly disagree with Angry Joe on this review (this is actually the first review I disagree with).
Although the game mechanics and graphics are superb, the fact that:
1. They put a completely pathetic storyline (as mentioned in the review) in the single player, and
2. They couldn’t bring anything fresh to the game, and instead borrowed heavily from other games ( technically making this nothing more than a cheap knockoff of better titles that have done fighting games better) make this game no more than a 5/10; and certainly not more than 6/10 let alone a whole 7.
Now before the Angry Army cuts my balls off, I just want to say that I’ve been a fan of Joe since his Old School Reviews, and regardless of whether I agree with Joe or not, I’m still going to watch his show since he does such a good job of being both Professional and entertaining, and he is usually spot on with his info; taking all aspects of the game into account.
Angry Joe needs his own music album. “Ass,Titties ” and “Drop That Dookie Girl ” would be his Singles.
lolol
All I really want to see brought back for single player content is ‘Chronicles of the Sword’ That was by far my favorite mode.
Hey angry joe I bet you lose to patro and pyrrha a bunch to make fun of them. =D
Hmm.. Does anyone else think his ratings has suffered an tiny little inflation?
Excellent review but just a little question, dear Joe… Is there any hope to see you review The King Of Fighters XIII? Because… Well… It kicks SC5′s sorry ass ^^
One day, I hope I’ll actually play a Soulcalibur game other than 2, in order to actually care.
If you have a PS2, SC3 is great and far better than SC4 or 5. Heck, it’s even better than 2, and 2 is fantastic.
Well, I’m in luck! I still have my PS2, my heavily modded PS2, so I can play my library of imported games. Is there a Japanese “Special” edition of SC3 because I can hang it up there with my FFX-XII Remastered, and KH Final Mix games, among others.
darkbob is right.
you keep saying ” exspecially”. isnt it “especially” without an X?
I’ll wait until the price drops on this one. Besides, Continuum Shift Extend comes out soon, which I’m looking forward to more.
When did Joe stop giving the games number rating? Just curious.
uhm he gives a 7? what you smoking on bro?
Pretty sure he rated it 7/10
go to 16:10
Joe the workaholic o_0
Checking daily now lol so many new vids nice!!
Hoping you’ll also do Kingdoms of Amalur and W.A.R. (xboxlive arcade couch coop)
Yeah, I can already see some disappointments I have with the game without even playing it. I’m a pretty big fan of Soul Calibur, starting from 2 on the Xbox. Was disappointed when 3 didn’t come on on anything besides PS2. Soul Calibur 4, had so much potential.
Honestly, it hurts to see that this game isn’t tweaked in a way that makes everything so much better, because the annoyances are far and few in between. I stopped following five so that I wouldn’t suffer too much waiting for it, but it seems like it has the same problems as the fourth game. I mean, with SC2, the adventure mode, told almost all through text was freaking awesome.
Was it just a series of cheap battles under varying conditions? Yes! Did I love it and replay the whole map for completion? Yes!
The story mode for SC4 was okay, I liked the custom character cinematic and everything, but it got boring about the fifth time around. The only redeeming quality for it was the tower mode, where, at one point, I spent two whole days figuring out a strategy to defeat some of THE TOUGHEST enemies ever! They had so much defense, that I had to take on a strategy of poisoning them and watching their health slowly drain away, without any continues. Then, doing that 11 more times to kill the next few rounds of bad guys.
And I like Sophitia and Cassandra, but I honestly hated using them. It’s something about their fighting style that was a giant turn off. And I remember seeing the two new characters announced and thinking, “There’s more of them? It don’t matter, I won’t use them.” But now, it seems they’re forcing you to play as them to complete the “Story.”
Honestly, I’ll probably buy the game, because I’m a sucker for create-your-own-character games. But damn, I was hoping this game would be the holy grail of fighters with innovative modes and just loads of content, like with SC2′s Weapon Master. But whatever. Waiting for the price to come down first.
On a side note, Armored Core 5 is coming up, and I hope to dear lord they didn’t make the same mistakes they did with Armored Core 4 and 4 Answer. All in all, I’m tired of having my heart broke.
- Jimmy
Ass…Titties…DICK. What?
I think i’ll pick this up tomorrow the pros look to outweigh the cons to me.
Whatever suits your flavor! Just don’t expect anything too special, there’s plenty of fighters out there.
don’t worry my expectations aren’t too high. It certainly isn’t the best in the series, but I’m still optimistic that it will be a fun and entertaining game none the less.
“Kool kidz follow teh crowD!… but real men follow their own path”- My best friend Vlad (“The Impaler”, we call him), smartest mofo I know.
Great review! I can always trust on Joe to give a unbiased really entertaining review.
Ezio is the shit!
First!
