Are you the mysterious plant man “The Joe” from GW2 PvE?!!
The differences between this and a dps are numerous and perhaps not what you’d expect. It is strategy based- you must choose what you want your capabilities and play accordingly. Also: you do have to aim– with the inclusion of dodging you must anticipate where your enemies are going to be. The main difference, however, is scale. In the beta I played, world vs world had a well over 100 vs 100 battle in which a third force flanked my server and the server we were fighting. There were easily 300 people fighting at one time. Besides planetside you’d be hard pressed to find a fps battle nearing that scale; and that was ONLY BETA. You’re kidding yourself if you think this sort of mass warfare and strategy takes less skill than pointing a crosshairs and firing–it is simply a different type of skill. Even the first GW, which lacked much of #2′s depth fostered international competition with big dollars on the line. Hopefully my somewhat aggressive response has served to answer your question.
Ok, so, can you tell me the difference between this and an FPS? Besides the fact that you have to have skill to play an FPS. This looks like a 3rd person FPS that you dont have to aim in.
This is a standard MMO layout. Have you ever heard of World of Warcraft?
Ok going to get this game its a given…. only problem is i might stop playing when elder scrolls online comes out… yep even if i have to play. But really the great thing about this game no dedicated healer Holy crap so happy for that cause i suck at it. probably going to play charr cause i dont want to look like a girly man.
People should be aware that most classes, especially the Warrior profession, can switch between two different weapon sets. Just wielding a greatsword is nice and all, but Joe should have added another weapon to his switch. I would suggest a rifle in PvP.
THE LEGION CALLS!!
Also, I’ve been loving the weapons skills, myself.
Especially when experimenting with different environments to fight in… If they had flying in this game, you KNOW they’d make air combat awesome! I’m still a little unsure of the hotbar method of gameplay, but I still enjoy the game no less. And yeah, I totally got the Collector’s Edition.
Angry Joe you also forgot to use your burst skill in the video (burst skill =the skill warriors have above the main skill bar – it deals massive damage).
Doh, also: in structured PvP, max gear will be allways unlocked, becouse structured PvP is meant to give as leve as possible a playing field – you kind of need the for tournament play – by the time original wow had introduced PvP system (back in mid 2005) GW1 had allready started runing it’s PvP tournaments (GW1 launched in Europe just 3 months after vanila WoW).
THIS IS HOW MMO’S SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOLD TO PEOPLE! Buy the game for a full retail price and play it forever! I just hope for the future MMO’s to follow the practices of GW2′s Model of Distribution. It is really good! And the game is great too.
Me too, though considering how much money is pored into them and the potential megabucks, I don’t see other companies doing it anytime soon
Yo Joe! Single player review please!
you mean PVE preview
Angryjoe = I see you didnt dodge even once during your entire play. double tapping your wasd will allow you to dodge, basicly giving you a 2 sec damage immunity.
I loved dodging in this game. It really gave it some strategical value. I just wish the game pointed its value out a little better though. We pretty much had to learn for ourselves that rolling during an enemy attack produced an “evade” maneuver. Hopefully when the game comes out there will be some introductory tips.
In Joe’s defense though, the servers lag and FPS was just so gosh darn rough at times that evading just produced rather malicious results. I can;t tell you the number of times I would double roll in a direction because of a delayed response time. It would result in wasted stamina or me barrel rolling right off of a freaking cliff or, a pack of rabid red team members.
This is most likely me but engineers suck… I played as thief for a couple of levels and I had more fun…. Could just be me though, awesome game!
The engineer is something of its own breed. How far did you get into the game on your engineer? They get way more complex when you unlock more toolkits. Swapping out toolkits is a lot like how some classes (well, most classes) swap weapons in order to accommodate certain situations better. They have a ton of promise and versatility, but sadly at the moment I would have to say they are a touch under powered. Some of the toolkits just don’t seem to deal enough comparative damage.
The EU beta was totally different to this, the in game lobby was much smaller and you could jump right into PVP from the menus.
The EU mist island had a couple quests and that was it. Weird.
I loved playing this beta. It was the best 3 days I spent on a MMO.
The overflow was pretty problematic. I had not really gotten to test it too much with my brother because I ended up jumping ship and taking that limited offer to change home worlds for free. I regret it now because later I learned that lag was 100% unavoidable. Was it not simply possible for you and your friend to just leave the main area and go into the overflow purposely? I found myself staying in it just to avoid the massive blobs of people cluttering some of the events.
On a side note, I am personally curious how they will be populating the red, blue, and green sides. Some servers should be large enough to fill a single color, but I can see some inevitably being roughly a third. If they make all 3 even and with less people, the WvWvW seems like it would be rather vacant. Hopefully they will decide to put multiple worlds together in a single color. This is particularly annoying because it will cost gems just to change worlds should we find out ours sucks with population =\ Would be nice if they gave us a “second chance” to find a good home.
the servers are ranked in an elo system and switched every 2 weeks to make sure servers of similar strength are matched against eachother… they did this in beta already…
e.g. my server, darkaven was roflstomping its 2 rival servers and they changed it up and the next day, we had a much much harder time to win because we had tougher enemies
Thats perfect, I played almost the PVE section of the game, and I have to say, we have here an excelent game at hand. I Tried every class, and initaly I thought that I will definitly play a Engineer as I like to blow shit up, but then I played the guardian and this class is fun too.
Glad to see that they put much effort into the PvP, I loved the PvP in Warhammer but it was so unbalanced as too many players played the “bad guys” I hope with a world vs. world this will be different.
But what I really really REALLY hope is the fact that they do something about the overflow issue, at least the entire group should be in the same overflow, as I never had a chance to play with my friends, and although the PVE is fun, it would be much more fun with some friends.
Buuuuut the Beta has less bugs than SWTOR has currently, which is promising (for GW2) and sad at the same time (for SWTOR).
I hate when people compare WoW and GW2. They’re different games. Yes, they’re both mmorpgs, but one is PvE focused and the other is PvP focused. For so many years, all we got were WoW clones, and now GW2 is trying to be its own game, NOt WoW. thats why there are no raids and things like that. They don’t want to kill WoW, GW2 wants to exist beside it.
I played it for 3 days in a row totally awesome. its a fantasy kinda like most mmo’s but its more fun and less dull then wow. for the gw2 haters. i played loads of years of wow.. good thing someone added good fun into it. beta isnt yet ready for release but still i like it. somehow i have the feeling even the wow players will have to admit this is just beter then wow. since they added some nice good gameplay in it.
I don’t see any reason to bash one or the other in order to play one. WoW is NOT a bad game. Guild Wars 2 is NOT a bad game. WoW had it’s time and now it is GW2′s turn. WoW pretty much raised to bar for the MMO genre so high that no one was brave enough to stray too far from the formula. I think it’s refreshing that FINALLY someone has the balls to do something different.
From what I have seen from the beta, it looks very much near completion. The only jarring issue atm is that damn CPU/GPU problem.
+1
(Hey Joe, we need like+Edit buttons in here!! ;]]] )
Same reaction I have. Why does everything need to be a competition?
Also, my mid-range PC with a dual core processor got annihilated for the beta. I hope they optimize it a bit more for the next beta event.
Either way I was prompted to get an entire new PC.
Dear sir i wasnt bashing wow. just pointing out the wow players bashing on gw2. if you dont want to deal with bugs dont get into a beta. wait for the game comes out. plus i mentioned that i was play wow for a couple of years. That should tell you it was good right?
Anyways like you said wow got old. its time for something new. hopefully this will do.
btw totally looks like a wow ripoff to me…
And all the games followed Diablo are Diablo ripoffs..OK MAN.
Uh? WOW ripoff? WOW ripped off DAOC pretty much. Everyone ripped off something else – in the end you get like text based multi user dungeons and fantasy books.
GW2 looks like it may be a worthy folloup to DAOC – finally! After so many years, maybe we can have a MMORPG that has fun PVP/RVR!
Original Guild Wars is older than WoW.
Guild Wars Prophecies came out in 2005, WoW came out in 2004. Please do a little research. Anyway, this game very much its own. It’s almost a head ache just getting used to it all because of how much the past MMO’s have imprinted this questing mind set on my mind. It is a game well worth checking out.
Yeah… I was playing the GW beta before wow came out. I may have confused for the actual release dates.
5 vs 4 lol Joe cant win otherwise XD
Looks fucking awesome. 3 huge sided FFA battlefield=Win.
I actually think there just to little graphic options in this game, I’m getting low fps with a 1gb gtx550ti when in battlefield3 i can run it on maxed out and i ask WTF?
or it’s “bottleneck” codded like skyrim? kinda disappointed of those fps drops in cities and when u see bunch of characters.
The game is pretty good and addictive i like it
I mean now i run it on lowest just so i can enjoy every section without that nonsense fps drop.
Lowering the settings will do very little for the moment in regards to improving your FPS. There currently is a problem with the current build and its relation to GPUs. A majority of the game is being run off of the processor which is unfortunately going to lag everybody. I hear everyone’s GPU is at most working at 20% capacity. Once this problem is fixed the FPS should improve greatly. At the moment though… every graphics card is pretty much gonna suck.

We are currently optimizing Guild Wars 2, making ongoing improvements to the game’s frame rate. Presently, the game is CPU-bound on most high-end systems, so lowering graphics settings or upgrading your video card may not have a large impact on performance.
Oh man thank u very much, u eased my mind!

I thought my pc does somehow sux, though i was pretty sure it’s the beta problem!
Anyways thanks for the link!!
We need an Angry Army guild!

Hey how i join a pvp or world vs worls match in the weekend beta???
Hey, don’t you dare forget about Tera that’s getting released in three days
GW 2 looks sick though, but i’m sticking to my new Lineage 2 lol
This game looks Amazing, i don’t usually have time to justify playing mmos though, that’s why i stopped playing Kotor, there some lag in the video, ad least for me.
I have some questions about the gameplay. First and foremost, what kind of battle system is it? For example… Standard MMO auto-battle + skills such as WoW? Action MMO button-press attacks + skills such as Vindictus? Alternate MMO pure skills such as the Old Republic? Does the game have controller support? Is the gameplay as different as is being touted? (I ask this because the whole World vs. World thing was very similar to Ragnarok Online’s War of Emperium and you yourself noted a similarity to another game.) Graphically the game looked okay, but not as sharp and detailed as it could be. Was that a result of not having the settings maxed, the video quality, or the actual in-game rendering?
More later if I can think of them.
I haven’t played the beta, but from what I’ve read there is no auto-attack. Combat is supposed to be dynamic. Everyone can dodge attacks and spells and heal themselves in someway too. Think they were trying to avoid cookie cutter tank/dmg/heal trap. Can anyone playing the beta confirm this?
There is an auto attack in a sense. Your number one ability is pretty much your auto attack. It continuously repeats a 3 attack combo at no cost what so ever.
You will be able to roll dodge in any of the 4 directions at the cost of endurance which slowly regenerated. If you dodge roll the moment an attack is being made you will see an EVADE pop up in place of a red number (damage taken). It’s a good system if the server or your fps isn’t against you. Otherwise it’s just a hassle to use. With the server delay atm it can even kill you by inputting a single roll command twice and send you right off of a cliff -_-.
The game is actually very challenging at points. Don’t be surprised if something one shots you and 8 other people around you because some aoe smacked you from god knows where. If you want a challenge, this game’s got it.
this game lookes awsome
I loved this BETA.
I just need to update my computer.
