Enjoyed this one and the price was right for the time I poured into it. Can’t wait for a sequel.
I can tell you guys did not have much fun with this. Which is a shame, because it’s a very good game – but I understand, it’s hard to get into it, especially in such a brief time. Games like Legend of Grimrock require a degree of commitment from the player right from the start.
buyed, played, finished = awesom game, but the ending quite weak (i dont like the prison, boss its ok, but the look of the place sux)
Honestly I think it’s great they’re breaking into this type of niche genre with something new as an IP. It’s not on the scale of wizardy or eye of the beholder but it doesn’t NEED to be for people to try out an old school type of game in a modern gaming world full of FPS and AAA RPG ME and Skyrim. I think this type of gaming can ‘regrow’ and maybe inspire other devs (or Almost Human themselves) to rebuild on a more complex game mechanics and so on. I greatly enjoyed Grimrock and I played it cause I was genuinely into it, I left skyrim (honeslty got bored of it), FO:NV (already beat it) and witcher 2 (not all that into atm) to play this little gem. I’m not even familiar with older dungeon crawlers-never played them-but this game truly grabbed my interests.
P.S. Don’t feed into people who are annoyed on comment section especially if they’re gonna just retort if they got nothing better to do. Just gonna flood the comment section with ‘drama’ and zero insight.
The game might not be for everyone , I understand , but I would insist it has great value to it.For a while now we’ve been seeing day 1 or a month after release payed dlcs from so called triple ‘A’ titles that add little if anything at all to the core game. For my 3 playthroughs I’ve gotten about 32 hours of gameplay and if we see a ‘creation kit’ release in the future ,people will be able to get ten times as much, ’cause theres always going to be that one devious b*stard that will create the ‘dungeon of hatred and damnation’ that will run 100 floors deep

After playing GRIMROCK for a few days off and on, I can say this game is alot of fun. I sunk WAY more time into the game this weekend than I planned to because I just couldnt stop…I couldnt let the PUZZLES win! I had to find the secrets!

THE GOOD:

The graphics are great..limited of course…thats the genre.

Gameplay is FUN. Overall you can move and do most things as good or BETTER than the original types of these games.

The puzzles are tricky sometimes as are finding the secrets.

If you dont read up on the game too much before playing it..you WILL be surprised and have your ass handed to you MANY times which is a GOOD break from hardly every dying in a game these days. Any game that can do that to me when I pride myself on NOT dying alot in most games is awesome. This humbled me a little.

Monster variety was pretty good for their limited levels. I mean hey I got bored fighting the same reapers in ME too so cant blame these guys either.

THE BAD:

HUNGER is ok it makes it feel old schoolish but there needs to be more food. I didnt like being hungry so often.

There were a few ways to “cheat” the system like being able to close and open doors to literally fight in increments. You open door hit monster close door and repear. Kinda silly and cheap.

Another way was to move in “squares” and you could defeat enemies because they had to move left or right only. I felt their attack should be able to hit you as long as they have a range and no obstacle was in their way. This felt cheap even tho not a bug.

The game does get repetitive after awhile but that said It was refreshing to move to a new area where the stones of the walls look new and see different things like statues etc.

ALL in ALL good fun game. Worth 15 bucs.

I think people misunderstand my first comment, it wasn’t towards your video but other comments.
I read comments like best game ever, game of the year, anyone who thinks that is obviously floating in some kinda nostlagia bubble. So my “get back to reality ” was towards them not gaming.

I’d say Gauntlet was my earliest exposure to the dungeon crawler genre, but would that be considered in the same vein as an Eye of the Beholder or this game?

I don’t mind tellin’ you, I’m a little insulted by the way Grimrock was treated here – confined to a joking playthrough. Where’s the respect? ‘Old fart’ games? I’m 26. While Dungeon Master & Eye of the Beholder were amongst some of my first games, they’re not beyond your time. I’d rather the review was conducted by someone in-tune with the PC culture, or not at all.
TotalBiscuit did a WTF is of this game and treated it with utmost respect. You should check out his review, it’s like 40 minutes long and really insightful. Cheers.
Indeed, proper respect. I felt sad when AngryJoe made this video… made him look like a kid from nowadays which gets a game that has so much potential inside it (especially with user made content) and he treats it like another garbage title.

Reminds me of some game I used to play on 3DO…Can’t remember but I clicked some shit on a wall and there was a key. Gates and maybe a castle. Fun type of game, kinda neat to see it in a modern light.

So they revived old genre, created a few textures and enemies, changed a few gameplay things that people used to complain about in old games and here you go game of the year , start throwing awards.
Played this for about 3 hours untill I got bored and went back to Skyrim. The only reason anyone would want to play this is simply if you don’t have anything better to play atm or if you have huge nostalgia boner for old games like this. Love the tactics in this game, any enemy can be defeated by moving in circles or should I say in squares, the only way you will die if you get youself stuck in corner. Where is a reason almoust no one makes game like this today, its because you we can be more creative with our games today, we can have entire worlds in our games not just one long boring dungeon. You like this old shit fine but lets not pretend like this is something special because its just not. Get back to reallity from your nostalgia land.

You know what maybe you are right this is not my kind of rpg, mainly because its not rpg. For a game to be rpg it has to have that very important part of rpg game, what was it? Oh right role play. If all it takes is just some statistics and levels to call something rpg, then you might as well start calling cod series rpgs.

I passed a few levels, 3 hours is more then enough to do that if you not stoping to inspect every wall. Had and invincible team of 2 fighters up front, and 2 minotaur rogues in the back 1 with missles and 1 with throwing, since mages don't do nearly enough damage as rogues not to mention they can attack faster. It doesn't matter if enemy has range attack or strong attack, then you cricle around them they have to turn, you will always have chance to hit them atleast ones and keep turning, works against any enemey if you have space that is. This game is ok for what it is, but save retarded statements like " best game of the year please".

You’re right, for a game to be an RPG, it needs to have role playing. The method of Role-playing you’re thinking of is the dialogue-based RP, which is a very, very essential component of any solid modern RPG (and of course, any good tabletop game).
However,the term Role-Play can also be used in reference to the class-based component of any good RPG. It’s not just in reference to dialogue options, etc.
Dismissing it as some genre other than ‘RPG’ is disingenuous to the roots and traditions of this kind of game, but it’s also a very accurate look at the way we now see video game RPGs. I agree with both points. It’s an RPG, but it’s very firmly entrenched in the Dungeon Crawler subgenre. It’s defiantly not a throwback to traditional D&D tabletop.
I get it, I know where RPGs coming from but I just don’t think we need that labeling anymore.
Problem is to me dialogue-based roleplay is the only kind of roleplay, because without it we just have bunch of statistics.
There are many games out there that lets you choose class, lets you customize it, etc. Many are called RPGs some are not and the line we draw , most of the time seems to be, does it have swords and magic? Oh its RPG then if it does.
Why not call things for what they are hack/slash, action, dungeon crawler and add with RPG elements. But I guess RPG elements would be long category so they just go “Fuck it just add it to rpg section its simpler this way”.
In the end I don’t care that much, people can call Diablo sci-fi shooter if they want, to me personally though it will never be an RPG.

enjoy puzzlesolving with a little old-fashioned D&D-like dungeon exploration 
little short (finished it 3-4 times since release) but lots of fun

any1 that wants to play one of these classics they talk about here i highly recomend sonics ultimate genesis collection ,. there is a few ,. phantasy star 1 is like this,. also includes 2-4 ,. also a bunch of other oldies.
lol Poor Joe couldn’t beat the first level. You only need to right click throwing weapons to throw them too. If you make a Mage you also want 3 points in one spell school since that’s the minimum to cast anything.
I agree though the game isn’t for everyone. If your in to old school RPG’s though you will have lots of fun.
About the game:
12 bucks to get this game and has so many hours of gameplay inside and so much is the satisfaction of solving a puzzle or defeating giant waves of enemies without even taking any damage. Definately a GREAT game of 2012.
Don’t pass this up if you aren’t fan of RPGs.

Almost had a aneurism just by watching you throwing rocks or not giving weapons to other party members in mid fight. Or seeing Amanda just fighting with her hands while having spells to cast

Yes, the videoplayer sucks. I’m not even able to preload the video, as it then stutters from the beginning. Or the preloading just stops and nothing happens.
