i bought this game because of your review. I got it on sale at amazon for $20 and after watching your video it sounded great. I would say the game plays incredible, fast travel would be amazing, and pawns can be annoying, but with the level of depth, fighting, and boss battles there isn’t much else out there like this. I trust your reviews and picked the game up and I frickin love it. Hopefully they make DD2 and fix the bs stuff, but man I am having so much fun with this one. Thanks Joe!
Good game but I gave up playing it because of annoying pawns who never shut uppppppp. I might do it in future If those pawns won’t make me mad again. I throw my pawns to the river when I quit this game :]
s.
God they should had add fast travel like skyrim it takes ages to get to the places you want to go thanks god this skyrim developers are smarter lol.
Hey Angry Joe there’s a Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arison coming but I’m not gonna buy it cause I don’t like games where you kill dragons becuase to me I’m not gonna say it’s sad look but I’ll say it’s bad look to me, so are you gonna buy it and review when comes out?
I’d generally agree with Joe’s comments. I felt they could have done more with the story though. More interesting quests would have been nice, and the ‘post-game’ content is really stupid. I know some people get into the whole philosophical anime-style endings (and don’t get me wrong, huge anime fan) but I can’t stand some of the convoluted endings this reminds me of- looking at you, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and Code Geass. And to me the post-game content and ending of Dragon’s Dogma felt like some sort of unholy hybrid of the two animes I mentioned above. I will try not to be not too specific since I know spoilers bother some people.
But seriously, what is it with 2012 and nonsensical and/or unsatisfying endings (I avoid the word depressing because some sad endings can be really good if done right…several anime and games I know have done this).
Mass Effect 3, Assassin’s Creed 3, and now Dragon’s Dogma? Seriously? (No offense to people who liked the endings.)
One thing that could have made this game really great is a strong main plot, cool NPCs, and endings THAT MAKE SENSE. (Only 1 ending kind of made sense, and even then all the stuff that happened in between killing the dragon and that was forced and convoluted. ) Also, make the teaching of your pawn something integral to the story? Maybe as time goes along your pawn acts more human and develops rudimentary emotions, creating a more dynamic relationship that could lead to a strong friendship or even a romance (which might be possible since there is no evidence in game to suggest it isn’t possible- at least in my opinion).
Which brings me to another point- and this is a spoiler, so skip the rest if you don’t like spoilers- apparently, you get a love interest who is kidnapped by the dragon and this person is based on who you have a high affinity with (personally I think they should have some sort of indicator of affinity), but there’s no way of knowing since if you have a lot of people with high affinity it might as well be random. I wish there was someway to lock in the love interest you want, and that more than two candidates had special dialogue (I’d rather have ten or so good candidates than pretty almost every NPC with nothing interesting to say).
Also, give us more chances to shape our character’s persona, even if they don’t talk, give them the opportunity to be asked questions by NPCs that change their opinion of you.
Maybe I am asking too much but I think that would have made the game a lot stronger- maybe even a favorite. And of course only having 1 save file and one character per profile…
Loved how my character looked in cutscenes, loved the customization system, loved the class system, combat is fun, day and night cycle is fun, and the concept of pawns and swapping them is awesome. And some of the basic plot elements, while not unique (having your heart stolen by the dragon, the dragon trying to weasel their way out of being an A**hole), and -spolier- dealing with other arisen who followed different paths, and how the world actually works and some of the history there.
But, what the whole thing turned out to be in the end left so much to be desired, and was as Joe put it, lackluster story wise.
Still, a promising start for a company not used to making western RPGs. If they make a sequal or a different game in a similar vein, they have their work cut out for them.
Kind of mad at EA and Capcom for other things. But, here at least Capcom tried to make something interesting.
I’d give it a 6/10 (decent but could use a lot of work to be better).
Beyond just looking good, Oakley carefully engineers this style to maximise comfort and give it a great fit. No athlete or other wearer wants to fuss with a pair of sunglasses that is ill-fitting, either pinching or sliding off your face at inconvenient times. The semi-rimless design ensures your field of vision is never obscured, particularly when looking downward, which can happen with other models of sunglasses. Oakley wearers expect a premium sunglass product that fits snugly and stays in place, allowing you to forget you are even wearing the Oakley Flak Jacket sunglasses,1_385. fake Oakleys Antix Sunglasses Black Frame Gray
…are you seriously advertising foakley’s on a game review site? Stop it. No.
No Joe, No! I can live with “expecially” as that is almost a catch phrase for you, but “alogorythms”? No. It is algorithm, “Al-Go-Rithum”. A logorythm is “a quantity representing the power to which a fixed number must be raised to produce a given number”. I don’t believe that is what you meant at all. Not at all!
Lovin’ your work. =)
actually this is the reverse of it all comapred to dragon heart. for one, you take half the dragon’s heart there, and the draogn in this gamesteals it. that and it is an evil dragon and does have that awesome voice.
still it is a very cool dragon in its own right. it takes a design from mythology that i have rarely seen in dragons. i do forget the desgins country of origin though. i do know that they have that arrow like tongue though.
Love the reviews Joe, keep it up. I would love to hear your thoughts on the new “Dark Arisen” content that they are coming out with and basically screwing existing buyers of the game.
I mean stating “we can’t do it as DLC because we don’t have the coding to release it as DLC” and then Coming out with the original game + added content as the ONLY way to buy it? That seems super shady.
Hey Joe, you noticed how Capcom (the REAL Corporate Commander is you ask me) are rereleasing Dragon´s Dogma (Enchanced Edition style) but not releasing the upgrades as a free download to all the fools who bought the original game?

Great game, good mechanics behind it especially boss fights, just something about climbing up on a griffin, drake or even a hydra and feeling immensely badass as you hack away at its head rather then doing pitiful damage by ankle biting the creature.
However, the lack of fast travel as many others have complained about does make the game rather tedious especially when you accept one request from just say Cassardis and you have to trek all the way to the northern side of Gran Soren… epic trip that thankfully can be cut down by short-cuts such as Ancient Quarry thank god.
Also as for pawn behaviour and chatter, I don’t mind it to a point as they are trying to include some sort of party communication behaviour but when it the same line over 20 times in either exploring an area or battling mobs the option to turn off all pawn chatter would be nice. And before I forget, the behaviour needs to be fixed as sometimes, despite battling the creature a million times the AI tend to forget to either use the offensive skills that it is weak to or don’t buff the party with the correct effect… One instance in my playthrough was when in the Catacombs, one of the mages cast “Dark affinity” instead of the Holy version though they were screaming about holy being their weakness when it came to skeletons.
Still a game worth getting despite the complaints you will see first hand or type later date.
I really hate this game.
I feel that the review is “sorta” accurate when explaining a single playthrough, but fast travel is slowly earned and you can buy multiple port crystals that can be placed anywhere on the map and stay in that spot always, even through multiple playthroughs … I spent upwards of 550 hours in this game and loved it ! I have heard that the new Dark Arisen expansion will be out on April 23rd in Japan … No word on NA release yet but it sounds like it may be $50 !!!! Can anyone confirm ? Joe ?
According to a store in the UK the Dark Arisen version may be released to most countries including America/Europe etc by the 24/4/13. They are not entirely sure but that is what I got when I enquired about it for a friend so I hope it helps…
Btw, the new version of the game is going to kick ass, the gifts for owning the original are and let me quote them here.
“Furthermore, owners of the original Dragon’s Dogma will receive the following for free on purchasing Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen: 100,000 Rift Crystals, unlimited Ferrystones and the Gransys Armour Pack consisting of six brand new costumes.” <— Good incentive to grab a copy would one not say?
The other additional details on Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen are:
All of the content from the original Dragon’s Dogma plus…
• A massive new underground realm to explore featuring over 25 terrifying new enemies
• More skills/equipment/augments:
Level 3 Skills
DD:DA provides each character class with a new tier of skills, giving players new devastating abilities and skills to master
Over 100 pieces of new equipment
All new high level weapons and armor sets for players venturing into the underground caverns
14 new character/Pawn augments
New tiers of equipment enhancement
• And there’s more:
Increased character customisation options
Item appraisal
Option to select Japanese voice over.
Hope that helps. ^~^
I agree with most of the complaints…but I am REALLY loving this game. Finally got a copy and it is really really good! The combat makes traveling totally worth it! And while pawn chatter is annoying as hell (see dragon age origins for really good companion chatter) they actually do a GREAT job working together in combat! In DA:O I always felt I had to micro manage all of my companions to death and control their ever move or die….in Dragon’s Dogma I feel confident that they will listen to me when I say pull back, go in or help…and they actually work together….my mage heals everyone and rains fire on enemies….my fighters actually fight and grab enemies to pin them for other pawns to slash apart. Battle is amazingly gratifying! I can’t wait to see what they improve in the sequel!!
i got 24 times
I don’t know about you guys but i like running into bandits 12 times.
Great review Joe. You missed two great features (one of them are really weird) in the game though. First of all: Some quest can be cancelled when you do certain quests, it is a weird system and I do not know how to properly explain it. If you like go “too far” in the main quest, some other minor quests gets cancelled and there is nothing you can do about it.
And the second thing is the affinity. It is kinda important to do quests to raise the affinity in some NPC’s. It have a big outcome in how the ending turns out. But I guess you didn’t play the whole game before you did this review…? =)
I’m on my third playthrough. I have thought about the flaws Joe is talking about, but you learn to “ignore” or just don’t think about them.
The major flaw in the game is the bosses, I think. That totally contradict this review, but hear me out.
The Cyclops and the Golems are basically the same enemie, with some different killing patterns. The Griffin and the Cockatrice have the same pattern, but the Cockatrice have more magic… and so on.
The worst of all bosses is the Wyvern that you can encounter on the open field. It is hard as all hell and have The Exact Same Types of attacks that the last boss have. *No spoilers intended*
But yeah. It is a great game and I would actually have to give it like 8-9 of out 10 because of its grand epicness.
Yetiberra, when you finish the game and start again, does the game have anything new? Like, Dragon’s Dogma becomes harder? I just finished Demon Souls and when you start a new game+ the game becomes 40% harder. I already bought Dragon’s Dogma but first I need to finish Skyrim, then Dark Souls. Looks like I’ll be busy for a long time xD.
After ending the game, you go into a final chapter that will blow your mind. During this chapter, new content (weapons, monsters, challenges) will be made available to you as long as you don’t progress to a point of no return in the game plot. Jump once, but don’t make the second jump.
Now this is a game i wanna get my hands on! Looks cool! And I’m a sucker for RPG’s so….
Hmm, from what I’ve seen in the review and from trying out the demo, I’m willing to give it a shot….
“THERE IS NO BATHROOM” the kid from the matrix should have used that line

DEFINITELY enjoyed this game… or, what I played of it. I do plan on buying this game, but just don’t know when,
Would go over mountains to get this game… If it was on PC. Sad that they arn’t planning on making it avalible for PC aswell. Oh well…
like the game could have been better though, certainly like the boss fights but i think the lack of fast travel and the mildly populated forests and stuff kills it for me
i hate this game
They should advance the environment and its beings… like wolves hunting dears or walking guards will help you fight bandits or monsters. I wish they’ll add horses. Horses should have life that can be attacked. And you should be able to resist when guards try to capture you. They should add Treants and more mythical creatures for the sequel. And they should add some foreigners from the East wielding queer weapons.
they should of had some kind of online areana where players can work together to slay monsters or fight each other or co-op single player
Its a little thing but it pisses me off,its not a drifter, its a ROGUE
this game gives me a headache at times
why why couldn’t there be fast travel this game would be as good as skyrim if it had fast travel
Wow no fast travel whatsoever? Id probaley get lost trying to get a market to buy things.
Great Review Joe
yeah there is. you get these portcullis stones that you can put anywhere in the world, if you buy them, which money is around every corner in the game, then you can liter the world with them so you can teleport anywhere. its actually more handy then the skyrim one since you make the points to go to instead of it having to be an actual location.
where is the dark souls review?
I wish…. i saw joe played and kill the beginner boss, i’m currently playing it and loving it.
i really think you went abit harsh on this game joe. i do agree that the pawn configuration and the layout can get abit annoying at times but it is a change from other rpg’s and that what is most significant. also they might not have included quick travel because they want you to explore the morld more and get to know the world and were all the creatures and bosses are. but i do agree with the enemy spawning that is really annoying, easy and boring and this is what they need to fix up the most. the side quests annoyed me abit aswell i hated the escort jobs so i never do them and this is also a downfall of the game. the story line i thought was confusing and got tangled up into side quests but i got the hang of it. now the combat system is by far in it league of it own, like climbing on enemys and hitting there weakspots that just totally awesome unlike skyrim were you just beat it head with a sword! i would give this game an 8 or 9 out of 10 and i hope they can fix up and make dragon dogma 2 with all these minor problems fixed and it just might topple skyrim!
I would have to disagree. I think that Angry Joe wasn’t harsh enough with this review. The pawn system is different but majorly unnecessary. I could have gotten the same effect the pawn system with a character creation system or by being able to buy mercs or recruit random people in the game. With the first choice, I would also have far more control with the abilities that the characters had and my control over their personality and how effective they were in battle. While the pawn system did help in having pawns who already did the mission, because I hardly ever bought a pawn at a higher level than myself and people hardly used mine, I never got any need out of that function. A personal choice, but it doesn’t diminish its uselessness. And there wasn’t much to explore in the world. While the wild was interesting to look at and the caves were unique, there was not much in the caves, the dungeons were a bore to go through especially because there were so few and you had to go back to them repeatedly. The castle town and your village were also rather lifeless, especially the castle town. They were dull and uninteresting and did not leave much for exploration. It was also annoying to go through the wild without knowing where not to go. It’s always nice to have an unforgiving aspect in a game, but there was no warning on what was the preferred level for a mission and it made it annoying to go somewhere only to die because you were unprepared. Speaking of missions and quests, they were just uninteresting. With Red Dead Redemption, there was a reason to do those missions and you got a mini story along with it as you progressed through them. These, there was hardly a story to it in the beginning. And the story wasn’t confusing, it was just terrible. The beginning sucks you by making you watch as your character is eviscerated, has a heart pulled out, and then eaten by a dragon. This warrants explanation throughout the story and you only get fragments of it every few (10 or so) hours until you get to the end of the game only to be brought into a further story plot that makes no sense at the end. Seriously, it is better to turn your brain off when playing this game and only play for the action. That is the best part of the game but even that gets old quickly. Once you are stocked up on adequate weapons and armor, have bought lots of health items, and have gained enough experience from fighting the same enemies countless times, you can beat enemies that are stronger than you. Heck, if you were really lazy, you could do some dungeon crawling, sell a bunch of stuff, buy stronger pawns, and have them do all the work for you. Sure the climbing thing was fun, but a lot of times it felt unnecessary and would’ve been more fun if it was used on a few enemies rather than on the same ones over and over again because they kept respawning. I’d give this game a 4/10. It’s saving grace is the fighting system and that it tried a lot of new things that worked well, however the graphics weren’t anything worth bragging about (they weren’t bad either but they didn’t wow me, they were okay), the pawns became useless overtime and were annoying overall, the world (though large) felt small and wasn’t worth respawing monsters and boring looking dungeons (and being so few of them that’s a surprise) to explore, the story (if it can be called that) was god awful, the people were lifeless, there weren’t that many places to visit, the quests were generic and weren’t worth doing (and the escort jobs were the worst!), the customization was not all that grand for the individual classes (but decent overall) and overall the game was just weak. I got this game around the time it came out and sold it the second I beat it. The only reason anyone should continue to tolerate this game is to use the fighting system and to see the new ways an RPG can be played. This game was a complete waste of my time.
After I saw this review, I was eager to buy this game. So I bought it, and my boyfriend so caught up in it, I barly had I chance to play it myself. I guess that proves how good this game is. Aside from some minor problems, I really liked this game. I hope they make a sequal.
You got a boyfriend with the game?
This game is actually one of the offenders of disk locked content. I hate this practise and will not be purchasing this game.
Guys just by buying the game your supporting business practices like this you can’t buy the game and then turn around and say I don’t support practices like this when in fact you are!.
Epic RPG, i cannot wait for the sequel.
I loved this game, but those pawns are annoying as hell XD
anyway that is the only let down of this game, for the rest it’s awesome!!
I wasn’t impressed that literally the first thing you see after the initial loading splash screen is an advert for DLC
If it takes that little to disconcert you to the game, then perhaps you should just give up on life in general, as nothing will ever be good enough for you.
soundtrack was cool
Aww, I actually liked the graphics. Or maybe it was just the way the environment was designed. One of the first things I said as I walked out of town was, “Oh my god the trees look like trees! They’re real trees!”
Does angry joe have a relative who works at cicis in bellmead
