do you even have diablo 3?
I was really on the fence about this game, and I still am. Your review lists a lot of good things, but the constant traveling is a huge downside that I don’t know if I can forgive.
Nice Review Joe, as always ^^
though it started so fast that made me say O.O! is he on drugs? XD
i wasnt interested in dragon dogma, but after seeing your review ill give it a try.
Thx Joe
There is fast travel of an effect. Port crystals and ferry stones create it. And one of the nice things about it is that you get to pick where the fast travel points lay and you can move them around. I like being able to set my fast travel locations to any location I like. Ferry crystals are expensive, but you can get a free one every couple of days in Gran Soren. (and Pawn gabbing IS annoying…but it can be turned off).
So now that we have amazing boss battles..why not implement this into other games? Could you imagine being able to slay dragons like this in the next dragon age? I think some co-op work combined with this type of system of boss combat and an good rpg with story and AI could go a long way.
Joe, it’s “A.I. algorithms”, not “A.I. logarithms”.
Hmm I will buy, however maybe about 6months down the road, once it has been patched up.
I’m okay with the 1 save file just like Dark Souls, where your action are really taken into account, and can’t just load back to rectified an action done previously..
But I cannot accept, No fast travel = Unnecessary wasted time.
You know when he said something about no fast travel… Well it’s supposed to be that way. Or at least it makes sense to me that way. Alright you’re not supposed to have fast travel because after a mission/quest it’s a race to get back to town before dark. Then it turns into a horror game if you don’t make it back by day. So if you had the choice to face what’s outside at night, but you’re already in the town, would you go back out there? So the game wants you to feel the rush of “Get back to town!” or else your screwed.
I’m going to get used copy of this game because I won’t support Capcoms money grabbing DLC practices.
Or just dont buy the DLC? …..
I also don’t want to support Capcom in general.
Why is this not on PSN?
I love your reviews like this, Joe, because you’re all “This game is badly flawed but it was still funny and maybe give it a try but it’s not an instant classic”. And you never see that at, for example, IGN. It’s all, “This game made my balls explode with awesome” or “This game made my balls shrivel with fail.” (I’m paraphrasing.)
Ah Joe. I can not tell you how happy I am that you’ve started posting your video’s on Blip again and I can start watching them again! Damn I hate Springboard.
I do actually buy some of my games based on your recommendations so it good in that regard, but more than this I do actually really enjoy your videos. Thank you for using Blip Joe!
great review commander Joe or is it General Joe, Commadant Joe not sure but great and funny all the same but won’t be buying
1: capcom
2: the fast travel system or lack of
3: i have a yearly game limit (this varies) and im sure there will be other games worth more like The Last Of Us, there is also the skyrim DLC but i will fit it in my maybes
capcom should not be a reason for not buying it
I personally won’t buy it off the shelves at full price because it’s Capcom. Ever since Capcom supported SOPA I decided against letting them at my wallet. Thankfully with places like gamestop and the whole used game policy I can still play titles I’m interested in, much cheaper AND without any of my money reaching capcom.
Right now it’s one of the best reasons not to buy anything because capcom equals fucking gamers over
this looks sick!
Recruit Shin reporting
I bought this game on day 1 and really you already pointed out all the problems I’ve had with the game, the boss battles are so epic its hard to play even my old favorites like Mass effect or KOTOR when I don’t have some the features that I have in Dogma. while I love those games more Dogma opened my eyes on what I hope will become a new stable of the RPG genre. give the game fast travel and few more interesting quest then I’d say it would be a 10/10, but as it stand I also agree with your score those back takes are annoying beyond belief. I hope if Capcom does anything is that they learn from this and treat it well…although its capcom so I’m not going to hold my breath sir. Still here’s hoping.
Shin Out
I have to say, best cold opening I’ve seen in a review.
joe, the “pawn” scene with jacob is now my favorite moment…because it’s funny….and that’s it…. yep
Capcom games are in danger , I think , there storys in games suck
Already made a vow not to buy Capcom products, plus only one save slot? Yeah, no thanks. They lost me there.
^ Yup don’t support Capcom. In addition to ripping people off with half finished products they try to sale at full price, they also give you very little value with overpriced DLCs. By the way, they supported SOPA, trying to get the bill passed so that they could then abuse its power to shut down sites that give their games bad reviews.(Such as Angry Joe)
I really don’t understand the “1 save slot” limitation either. If you’ve got a 360 hard drive with 40gbs, you can’t use ANY of that to save extra save slots of the game??? Why not???
If you must get a game of theirs, do so in a way so that none of your money reaches Capcom. Buy it used from Gamestop or order a second hand disc off of Ebay or some other site.(The selling user will get your money, NOT Capcom)
I might just pick this up but I agree with joe with the annoying but not stupid AI and no fast travel. Ill just buy used and see what happens but thank you joe with your extremly well done review. Plz review Ghost Recon Futyre soldier, that game is the shit with probably the smartest AI I’ve seen in a shooter. (If you do review it don’t bash the story for being genertic for it continues from GRAW 2 and 1, it also based a lot around Tom Clancys book “ghost recon”)
Great review Joe can’t wait till your next.
-end of transmission-
You know, this game still looks like it would be better then skyrim even with two of the three bad features of the game, pawns and quests, but fast travel is a must for me. I don’t use it much in skyrim, but that was only because I liked the random stuff that would pop out at you. One time I found two mages fighting it out with each other, fire spells were going all over the place and so were ice spells.
Now I am not sure if its me or if this really is the case, but does anyone else notice that ALL video game that come out always has a few major problems with them? Like they could have done something better but failed to do it (ME3 with the quest system), or they just did not put it in at all when it would have really helped (Fable 3 having a world map, and no what they had does not count at all). So I am sure other people have noticed this too, right?
Joe!! I love your work brother! Keep it up! I am not here to debate about any points…just my own thoughts on the game. I do like the lack of fast travel. In a way it feels old school without it. The combat is extremely gratifying and all the enemies you run into will employ some form of strategy against you. Hell this game is almost like a single player MMO. I do however agree with your point about enemies repopping in the same old places and the lack of more than one save file, but I honestly don’t mind. The game gives you plenty of chances to change your look or change the way or style you want to go about things. Lastly, I do love my rpg’s to have great stories to go along with the game and I do love when rpg’s push the envelope and push the genre forward. I can definately see this game doing that in many regards. Very deep and very fun rpg. Can’t wait for worthwhile dlc and a possible sequel.
Oh btw in th PS3 it has better graphics than the Xbox360 one.
Also the DLC Monster Hunter weapons are best used by beginners if high level players use them they need to upgrade it and only use it for certain monsters that do great damage like a dragon.
Also I would like to say thank you Joe for the review. Awesome work.
Best review in a while. You kept a more straightforward and detailed review than others, I think. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved em all, but this one stood out.
Oh, and the screaming was absolutely hilarious.
Another great review Joe.
I want to PROCREATE with my pawns
This review had me laughing out loud, Great stuff Joe
I’ll be honest, the only time the story became much of a problem is when they focused too much on it for its own good compared to how much they usually presented it in the game. Case in point, the full endgame. Not only that, but it’s because of it that they handled post-ending gameplay in the one way an open-world action RPG SHOULDN’T go about–by immediately starting a new game after beating it. Now, the fact that it’s new game+ is good, no question about that, but when I play something like this, I don’t want to be taken back to the beginning of the game with no say in the matter, I want to go right back into where I left off and accomplish things I didn’t before.
That’s my only major problem with the story and the game as a whole aside from a few minor technical issues, as the rest of it wasn’t really all that necessary to get in order to have fun with the gameplay, and that’s ultimately what games should offer, and story can do as good a job of complimenting that as it can get in the way. For the most part, the story of Dragon’s Dogma did neither, and that was fine.
Please review Metro Last Light i am a fan of metro 2033 and would like to know if its worth my money thank you for reading and in advance if you review
I really love your jokes:D
Yeah:
-no story
-no fast travel
-no AI
I would’t give it a 7.
Kingdoms of Amalur had a great battle system too but I’ve thrown it out just at the begining of the knights map.
No story = no real fun playing it. That’s what I say
I disagree. A lack of prominent story is the worst reason not to play a game. When the only saving grace of a game is storytelling and characters, then the fact is that the game itself, and the gameplay, isn’t likely to be very good. It’s why games like Earthbound and Persona are so overrated. This game’s only major flaws came in BECAUSE of the points in which they focused more on the story than needed be. Story does nothing to affect gameplay unless that’s the point of the game, and it only works as a driving force of the gameplay if it’s meshed together ala Heavy rain or Asura’s Wrath.
Awesome review.
I’m not looking to make a debate, as I agree with most things that’s been said. Sure fast-travel could’ve been an alternative then having to run throughout endless fields with basically nothing in your wake.
Note, have barely had time enough with this since I got it.
So I’ve barely scratched the surface, but safe to say, battle’s offer a varied set of challenge, they seem to value tactics to take you out, could be a one-timer, but I took note of some bandits strategy trying to toss a huge boulder through a narrow road, with mountain on both sides. Best thing was to run back or get crushed. Didn’t have other much options by then.
Apart from that, I do find the nighttime rather exciting.
But shit, when there’s monsters coming, they come in great scores. Better have a few potions to heal your self or your friends, or you’d end up dead.
Another feature I may be missing is able to dodge. Sure you have the block with the swordsman, but at least able to quickly roll aside while standing still, instead of having to run, then jump to have your character roll. To what point do I ask?
Now to some other things you mentioned Joe.
A lot of talk around you. Can get a tad bit much yeah. Like don’t have to poke me about the enemy location before I’ve even seen em. Like WTF are you looking at, and serious dude, keep your mouth shut, you’ll send em onto us.
Apart from that though, I’d say most what’s been said is just my own experience. Nothing to exciting about missions, but that’s the same with others. I’ve only seen Elder Scrolls pulling up a few good missions that offers a bit more creativity to solve then, go hack and slash 10 goblins, and you’ll get handsomely rewarded.
Nothing about that, but if it weren’t for the monsters, I’d probably end up the same fashion like I did with um… Can’t even remember it’s name anymore, was released in February at least.
But hey, you can jump in this game. He he!
Also note, only one save. Bummer oh! Can’t save ahead of awesome battles and then show em off to a friend. Instead the coincidence encounter is all that matters.
looks like he didn’t find the shortcut to southern gransys through the Quarry for the longest time.
That frustrated me too, but after I found that shortcut the traveling became more tolerable.
I agree with the final verdict considering the gaming elements but, to me, Dragon’s Dogma is an amazing game that has no reason not to be recommended to any RPG lover.
You could’ve mentioned more positives Joe (equipment customization and background)!
Damn, I think I have to get this now just for the main menu song! Can’t stop listening to it…awesome review as always Joe!
Quick note to Joe, you look like you really enjoy what you do. Keep it up.
I have made a small review on this site before and now that I have played it (for roughly 15-20 hours I think) I have a better grasp. Yes a fast travel system would do wonders…wonders I say. The long treks are a very annoying and I have mastered where Harpies are on the road so as an Assassin, I just snipe them. Character models don’t look that good and lip sync-ing outside of cutscenes…forget about it. But the plus side is the epic fights. I may have spent an hour trying to finally find the quest I needed to get to and when I did I has the epic war with my pawns fighting a massive hoarde of goblins, 3 armored Cyclopses, and they had ballista’s firing down on my team as we tried to push forward to take a fortress. That was AWESOME. That is the stuff they do right. You can tell Capcom is trying to break into a new market and this is their first attempt. If they could fix the flaws, this game would be great. I am hoping for patches for fast travel and to shut up the constant AI chatter of your pawns (I am able to mentally tune it out). I can’t help but enjoy the good stuff and I want to support this game (except the DLC bull shit, I noticed that to) so they can improve upon what they have. I will go into a more in depth review of this game on my next review on bliptv, just finished Blazblue. So I think this game is worth a try as the good stuff is worth it and the annoying stuff…can be fought through with a strong tolerance level. I am Maleficent5, and this game HAS BEEN JUDGED.
I met your pawn in the rift and have included him as a main addition on my team. I’ve become pretty attached to Dragon’s Dogma and I haven’t gotten such a strong, emotional attachment to a video game since Final Fantasy X, even though there are a few things in the game I wish they had included. I only hope someone didn’t make a mage and name him Angry Joe just to get better ratings on their pawn. If so, it’s no big deal to me, because the pawn is badass nonetheless and has already become apart of the journey.
Good review Joe. Many of the points you pointed out I picked up on when I was playing like NPCs typically saying the same things and the lip-synching is off, but everything else you pointed out seemed to me more nit-picking than actual flaws. This is my opinion of course and I am fine with things like limited fast travel, because there is fast travel but it’s scarce and as someone mentioned in one of their post; Dragon’s Dogma shows you that outside of towns and such you best be watching your back.
Dragon’s Dogma is a great game that combines many elements from other games, it’s not the best, but what game is perfect?
can’t watch the Video past 12:11, i get “forever loading” and thats it.. anyone else same problem?
Yeah, same problem here (has been happening a lot lately with that video service) and the link under this video to blop.tv is the wrong one (directs to Steel Battallion-gameplay)
Here’s a working linky for ya: http://blip.tv/angryjoeshow/dragons-dogma-angry-review-6173186
You can also check out his youtube page.
why the hell is there not a PC port of this?
Great review Joe, very helpfull as always, for the average buyer!
man that was funy haha you rock angry joe!!!
I actually agree with the attempted combination of games they tried to blend into this, and it was a briliant idea. DMC-style combat in an RPG is an amazing concept, fighting giant monsters by striking weak points like in monster hunter and shadow of the colossus, and a giant open work like in Skyrim.
Honestly the only thing that truely ticks me off is the pawn system itself. I don’t want to send some AI ally over to a friends game, I want to show up and help them myself, giving it that Monster Hunter feel.
Now I know that Capcom is doing something similar to that with the online event system, but that’s more competition than co-op since each player will be trying to fight for the killing blow as opposed to working together to take the enemy down. Not to mention I have a feeling that the event system will be greatly underutilized with very few new missions popping up with plenty of time between releases. (or worse yet, each event only being around for a certain period of time)
Now before anyone says anything about “You shouldn’t complain about no multiplayer! Skyrim’s a great game and it has no multiplayer!”
My response to that is yes, I love Skyrim. I don’t think that game needs multiplayer because it has a full world of things to do, and not to mention more than one save (stupid Capcom…), AND the fact that there are many ways to play it that may not even require a lot of combat. But this game makes me think of Monster Hunter more than anything, and if the AI is as dumb as Joe says, then I’d rather have a human player or two at my side.
Okay, my long ass comment is over, lol…
The AI isnt dumb at all, best AI ive seen in any game so far really
Joe, I love your review, but I don’t think there should be a fast travel in the way of Skyrim. I’d be ok if say in each town, once you’ve visited, you could have a warp between towns/outposts, but the idea is that the game is supposed to be VERY stressful/tough when you go out into the wild yourself. The idea is that you go out and have to worry about your stamina and night approaching and your oil and your weight and health and all sorts of things. It’s something I think that’s great. It really helps you see how valuable civilization is in the game where it feels safe and then you go back out and it’s like “oh shit, this is gonna be a real adventure.”
That’s probably its biggest strength that I love about Dragon’s Dogma. Never before have I felt this kind of adventure. Ya I LOVE the souls game (and have played them all to the ground and still love em), but even those games didn’t have the real sense of adventure in the world. They had badass atmosphere and a great world to explore, but I dunno, hard to say.
I agree the pawn chatter needs to be fixed, the story/quests could be improved, and having more randomized events/spawns in the world would all improve the game. But I don’t want a fast travel like Skyrim/Oblivion/whatnot. I’d say probably more like a Souls kinda fast travel if anything. Where there are only specific areas you can travel with and you have to make your way to one first anyways. That would be acceptable.
I really hope Dragon’s Dogma does well and the day 1 dlc is at least not as bad as other games with Capcom and you can ignore the DLC messages by turning off the option in the menu to disable tutorial display messages. It’s so freaking sweet in its gameplay and man, if they do the few fixes you say, improve the story even more in a sequel, we could have one of my all time favorite franchises.
I hope the developers will take notice at your points and others
im enjoying it so far, Joes little gripes with it are correct though
this game…I really wanted to buy it on ps3…………….but for RPG’s I prefer PC only…plus their painfull, corporate cash grab day 1 DLC is pissing me THE HELL OFF!!
Boss battle – look good. But eventually all AI is predictable. Once you knew their weaknesses, you were leveled up and gained more skills, the appeal would be gone. No higher difficulty settings, it becomes boring.
Open-world RPG – actually this is a “fake” open-world. Because the world can end once you finish the main quests. Rendering other side quests completely useless. Side quests are just there for you to play for fun but not to achieve any useful objective. Like all Japanese games, the story ends, and the so-called New Game+ starts. Repeat and repeat until you become a hoarder. That sucks.
Combat system – just a bunch of skills preset for you to learn. And some of the skills especially the fighting skills can give you ridiculous superhuman strength to throw the enemies around. Unrealistic. The Arisen is supposed to be mortal human. But some fans love this kind of unrealistic fantasy thing. AI of the enemies are dumb. You just approach them and press the buttons. No blocking, they just stand there and let you kill them by continuously pressing the buttons. The ai of Combat system autolock the target for you. Easy and dumb combat system.
Story – forgettable. Pawns are like slaves. Town people are all like Japanese with Japanese faces. Nothing against the Japanese, just that this game is originally cater to Japanese market FIRST. Thus it looks weird as if you are living in a western medieval world with whole bunch of Japanese people. NPCs are soulless and boring like hell. Little interaction within the town, as if the town is just there for you to prepare for battle, but nothing else. Dialogues are boring. The story is nonsensical and hollow. Freedom in this game sucks, as the Japanese value moral over freedom in their real-world culture. There is really no replay value with this game, unless someone thinks fighting big monsters again and again with some ridiculous unrealistic skills and more and more grinding to up the levels, weapons and armors are fun.
This game is suitable for those who get fooled by big monster fight. Without the big monster battle, this game sucks even more. Capcom want your money. They know exactly how to please you (or fool you).
Have you even played the game past level 15?
This is kind of funny, because of how you failed pointing out the problems:
Boss Battles – This is an issue in…just about every game. Every A.I at some point will become predictable; at some point you will have all the equipment (or level, or better yet, personal experience) required to make them a joke (as all games do). Higher difficulty settings don’t fix this issue much. If you want to make things tougher, do what I do…venture out at night.
Open-World RPG – Personally, I find the NG+ helpful to redo your adventure since their is no second save file. And…sidequests? For fun? What madness, after all, games aren’t to have fun! */End Sarcasm*
Combat System – Cause every game has a system that allows you to make your own skills? Every single game does the same, you learn a skill, you add it to your moveset and you use it; like DMC, Skyrim, Dark Souls, Monster Hunter, etc.
To be fair, the Arisen is an *im*mortal human, hence he has special privileges such as super strength. But, seriously, this is a game, the point of this sort of thing is to be able to have some fun and defy the laws of logic. If you want absolute logic, don’t play games. A.I don’t block? I agree with Rampage, you don’t seem to have played the game past level 15 or truly played a melee class for long.
Enemies will block you (fact: some even have auto-block in forms of being covered in armor) and in other cases, will just avoid you so you can’t hit them, and its pretty funny when you go off chasing them (lol). As for auto-locking, that only exists for mage/sorcerer spells, and they deserve it more or less.
Story – Most of this section is alright personal opinion. However, the last point is ironic since any game you play pretty much has you repeating something over and over again [FPS, shoot things, find ammo, etc; Action, beat up/kill things; Puzzle, use your head to no end; so and so]
I’ll agree you nailed that final part pretty well. You have to see, however, that the fact that big monster fights (and combat in general) is very well done and addicting with all its different tactics and vocations. This statement is also the equivalent of removing boss fights from any game; and we all agree that no boss fights pretty much ruins most games.
I feel the game is worth playing even with all the flaws.

“SHAAAAAAAT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWP!” lol
i cant understand why you “need” a fast travel system joe O.o…in Skyrim for example, if those mountains between Whinterhold and Whiterun weren’t there id never use the damn fast travel system, hell i wouldn’t even bother buying a horse, the map just isnt very big.
suppose u need to do a qquest…No u need to do a quest without doing exploration…ur mind is set on the quest but u can’t fast travel it becomes way too time consuming just running..plus as joe said the the areas are thinly populated without random interesting things happening like in skyrim..these make for a very BAD experience especially when there is not much point in exploring…
Thank you Joe for putting up blip.tv links, because I don’t know what springboard’s problem is, but I guess it really doesn’t like 64bit linux flash plugins or something. Having both is cool though, because sometimes blip derps its pants too.
Btw, your blip.tv link is to your mech warrior clone game review. Might want to fix that.
I think i might check the game out, if the problems you mentioned, with the AI and travelling systems get fixed in patches. Otherwise its not a buy for me.
And OMG the ending of the video made me laugh so hard XD
