Fartin’ Around with SpecOps: The Line
Angry Joe and Jacob play Spec Ops: The Line. Can this new title revive the franchise with its focus on Story? Will there be Dune Sand Worms? Or will it be ultimately buried by the competition? Find out!

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
Review this Joe, I promise it’s not what you think it is. Also, play this alone, you really need to be alone.
Joe, if you don’t buy this game and play it through completely, I will hunt you down.

This shit is amazing!
i put sensitivity at 1 and it was still a little 2 fast
ITS INSANE
Gameplay looks like the same old treacle fest, but damn that is some good particle effects, shame people will look at it and go meh in about 4 years whilst people will still be playing things like Sonic 3 and Paper Mario
yeah that “futuristic tower” that you commented on… is actually the tower of dubai. And is already built and standing in dubai. just thought i’d let you guys know.
Finally got around to trying it. And no way does this game come close to Uncharted 3 sand graphics and effects.
Still the story line/plot is very interesting, although the aiming mechanics and cover snapping could use improvement.
Looks pretty generic to me. I think I’ve played enough modern-day military shooters, so I can pass on this one.
The surprise sandworm idea is a cool one, but you couldn’t do it with an established series like this one, that would just piss off fans of the series. You’d have to do it with a new IP, and even then you’d run the risk of angering or disappointing people who bought the game expecting something different.
It’s one of those games that you need to play by yourself and go through the entire thing, by the end you will realize at multiple points it’s not what u thought. I don’t blame you for saying it the demo was absolutely did a terrible job and it does look very generic, like it did for me. I got gamefly and i thought you know this is a rental type game so why not. When i got further in it gets alot more, lets not say amazing, because to say that would be psychotic. it is more of a thing you experience with the choices you make and the effects of war really hit you hard. Also character progression is somewhat frighting, in a good way. Like in Far Cry 3 the character progresses emotionally, probably in a very much more than Jason to the point were you know that Walker is going nuts and goes on a rampage. So i can’t tell you to buy it, cause i don’t expect you to go out there and buy a game you don’t seem to want to play.Do whatever you want, i just want to tell you that it really isn’t that it’s a good experience and maybe for someone who isn’t sure you should get it when it gets around the $20 mark.
this doesn’t impress me much…to much money spent on the sand if you ask me LOL
that’s 1 more game for my NEED TO GET list
this game sucks
Joe that tower does exist in Dubai it is 500 floors high if I am correct
This doesnt look like Burj Khalifa. And 500 floors? LOL it has about 160. Dubai skyline in this game is sci-fi…
Just finished playing the demo on PS3. Gotta say, I am not impressed. The controls feel kind of clunky and the AI seems pretty stupid (many of them just sit in the open, shooting at you instead of going into cover), but…
I kind of like the story. It has this Apocalypse Now feeling to it of military unit gone rogue (read: bat-shit crazy).
The impression left, combined with the lack of coop makes this as a “maybe buy later when the price drops”. Purely for the story.
Joe, that huge tower would be the Burj Kalifia. It’s in Dubai and it’s quite real.
It looks pretty good, but the sensitivity was way too sensitive. ^^
Well, disappointed that the company removed coop, but it still looks interesting.
Liked this Let’s Play more than the last one, they didn’t just fanboy/hype the game up and were more objective about it. But the game itself doesn’t look that bad. Handling like Gears of War is a good thing, not a bad thing.(Hint: those games were top notch shooters) The graphics look good too. The lack of Co Op is what’s really going to hurt it. Gears of War had Co Op… in every title. The selling question though will be can they make the campaign interesting enough start-to-finish with just one big desert?
Dude is that a What-A-Burger cup? You in Texas?
Watch his older vids, I think he mentions either Austin or Dallas.
But either way watch his older vids their still as awesome =)
I’m pretty sure it’s Austin
Gotta love those smooth console controls.
Lol, Little ceaser now paid ya for the adven.. Lol this game could be better. Looks to much like a GoW or a ME3 clone.
Me and my crew loved the game since its announcement and we’re looking forward to the game when it releases.
and oh, Joe’s review for SpecOps also.
Angry Joe I’m a long time viewer of your channel and I’ve always appreciated your reviews and the rest of the content you bring out. But I don’t think it’s fair the way you both started this video and got into the game for the first time.
As a reviewer you shouldn’t come into a game with such a bad attitude about it. You come off as a bit of a douche when you are scoffing at such small things as soon as you start playing.
Any game review or first impressions video you do you should start with an open mind and a fair expectation of the game. I’m sorry, but this video felt like it exists just so you can hate on it and it’s creators and that’s just cruel. Imagine if you spent those 3 years working on this game and some reviewer does a video like this about your game? Not cool Joe. I expect better of you.
I didn’t see it like that at all. They made the joke about how the game was delayed for “sand” which actually is laugh worthy as a reason.
They didn’t really like the CoD style opening for how the game started and yeah I agree with that, it’s just a cutscene and it’s over done.
The new game doesn’t really have what made the previous spec ops games popular, they were tactical and very serious. This one just looks like a GoW cover action game, like many other games do today. Maybe we’re all just a little tired of seeing them.
I thought It was pretty fair, all his “just film me playing the game” videos are like this and its not really a review. I have not had any interest in the game before and it did not leave me with a negative perception of it, so I doubt it will put people off if that’s what your worried about.
@Drak
1) He wasn’t angry at any point. “attitude”? He was basically neutral the entire time. I don’t know where this anger was that you’re complaining about.
2) News flash, a Let’s Play can in fact be someone playing the game for the first time! Ya. Really!
3) This video had a fair impression of the game. It wasn’t over hyped nor smashing the game into the ground. Have you never heard of any kind of middle ground, middle rating, or mixed review? You said you were a “long time” watcher, but everything in your post implies that this is the first Let’s Play you’ve ever seen.
4) “I’m sorry, but this video felt like it exists just so you can hate on it and it’s creators and that’s just cruel.” <–Fail.
1) “Attitude” doesn’t mean anger.
2) What does this have to do with my comment at all?
3) The video is called Fartin around so it already gives the impression that he doesn’t care to give the game a chance. And there you go mentioning let’s plays again which makes no sense
4) How is that a fail?
Not done making a fool of yourself I guess… ok… I’ll explain 1 more time just for you.
1) It can. But take any case you want, because they’re all out of context as an adjective for this video. Simply being objective does not=attitude.
2) Everything! You seem to expect more, as if it were a review, when it is not.
3) The fact that it was called “Fartin around” means you shouldn’t be taking it so seriously! Everything you said after that is pure crap. As for why I mentioned Let’s Plays again, see point 2 again.
4) It was a fail because it was pure stupid. No idea how his video made you feel that.
.. wow. Not even going to bother arguing with you. I didn’t realize such stupid people watched his videos :/
Due to the master-piece in every-way that is Future Soldier, this game is f*cked
… meh i wasn’t gonna buy it any way, where is your actual diablo review
I think we’re all waiting for that, but I think Joe is waiting for all of the issues to be made known before he reviews the game, you know the latency bugs, LAG, low security meaning accounts hacked on a large scale, I think we’re up to several thousand now, and not to mention the balancing issues for the harder difficulties, and the lackluster story that takes D3 in a very weird direction and makes the characters sound like spineless arrogant whiny bastards even the angels which floored me….
buts that my two cents
WhatAbuger! YAY! i miss it so much
I remember that IGN made a huge deal about this game in a preview, saying how emotional and heartrending it was for them to play. Since you had to kill fellow Americans at one point.
Course most people thought that was dumb, myself included. It’s fine to kill other people, just not Americans? A life is a life, but then again, this is just a game, it’s not real.
Can’t say I’m seeing any of that emotional stuff in this demo, looks like another generic shooter.
So far it seems like another one of those games I’ll buy from Gamefly when they have it on sale for about 10 bucks.
Consider the plots of most games.
I don’t pretend to be an expert, but I think the only people American players haven’t killed yet in a modern-setting shooter are American. When you look at it as an actual development, yes, but consider its contemporaries.
Think of it this way. Citizen Kane would probably be seen as cliched and formulaic and, in fact, boring by most people who grew up with modern film, with a Shyamalan-esque twist and a gaping plot hole at the start. But if you compare it to contemporary films, it was twenty, thirty years ahead of its time.
For a modern military FPS to have American soldiers killing their fellow Americans is a bit unusual.
No, I agree, you don’t see too many games where you fight and kill fellow Americans, but that fact isn’t gonna make the game more emotional, it’s still just a video game, and not real.
This video for example, they shoot those two Americans by the stairs, and they felt nothing, heck, they made some jokes.
Seems IGN just really, really overhyped this game in that preview I read. It looks to be decent, but not heartrending like that preview said.
From what I understand, the game is gonna have a morality system, but I bet it’s not gonna be anything more then a kill, or don’t kill type of situation, there’s nothing deep and emotional about that.
I’m not 100% sure as i haven’t seen any details on what the actual morality system they are going to use is, but i think the choice system is shown in this vid. The point where they highlight the window with backed up sand, note joe was able to take the enemies out normally. Normally if they are using an alternative/creative kill system, they encourage you to use it when they demonstrate I.E. enemies bunkered down or behind heavy cover and more or less impossible to kill outside the demonstrated method. The fact that the enemies could be killed normally makes me think that what we saw is a demonstration of the morality system, basically lethal and non-lethal (i’m not 100% sure if having sand dumped on you would be lethal, but there is still a chance that one of those guys could survive since it wasn’t that much sand) ways to end an encounter.
But we just have to wait until the final game to see how this plays out, heck maybe you have to make a choice of whether or not to kill your unit to save others or something along that line. That could really mess you up since after hours of play you have gotten used to their interaction. It’s all about the story and i’m sorry but demos are never a good way to judge the story as you’re only seeing a small tidbit of that story, the layout of the plot. Maybe the deep and emotional stuff is closer to the climax which we wouldn’t get a build up towards in the demo since the demo is more about showing the gameplay. Basically in the demo we have the basic plot layout, but in order to see the rising action in the story (in other words the real meat of the story) you have to play the game.
Played the demo and it’s ok. I usually play these games in co-op… not as much fun playing alone. this was one of the games I was going to buy because of the co-op… now I lost the need.
Will there be another Army of Two?
Thanks for the Fartin’
This game is real generic. I love the idea of a Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now game, but this is dull as hell. Cardboard characters, cookie-cutter gameplay. I scoff smarmingly at this game.
Nice video, I am looking forward to your upcoming reviews!
Please tell me that you are doing Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, also I want to see your Diablo review.
I really liked the demo and am looking forward to the game, just annoyed there is no pc demo!
As soon as see it’s a modern military shooter plus generic character fighting for i dont know what… ‘murika.
.
i don’t care how good the production value is, it’s just like polishing a turd, you can’t do it.
is he going to do a future soldier review??? great video btw.
At the 4 min mark where there was a marker on the window and u just shot the guys i was like facepalm! No offence, but still comone.
typical angryjoe playstyle, he just isnt that good lol
watch the let’s play dark souls and look how much it takes to understand that he has to escape from a door XD
lol yeah that was funny as hell XD
But since Joe has to play a lot of games for reviews etc I can understand he doesnt really have the option to take his time to get familiarized with games too much but still its kind of ironic that a proffesional game reviewer isnt that good at gaming
Good thing we watch Joe for his opinions (and rage lol) not his skills
Plus its more entertaining to watch! lol. But yea I cant always be focused when ive got jacob in my ear or im talking/thinking about the next thing. These are live not prerecorded its a bit different from when im alone playing the games.
Haha yeah it’s entertaining for sure! And I can imagine that’s distracting at times. Its kinda cool you dont give a crap even if thousands of people watch it and not edit it out thats respect worthy.
Also you got to have some skills if you love Witcher 2 that much cause I recently started that and getting my ass kicked from time to time for real!
generic shooter #27 sigh
I don’t know, this doesn’t seem particularly new or interesting, it’s just another military shooter
I would have been interested in it if it had co-op so I could play it with my friend’s but if there is no co-op its gonna be a weak game. They really did themselves in there…..
The game looks decent, definitely not bad, just nothing new. AI seems to work (on your side anyway).
Removing co-op was a mistake. That is where most of the fun(and sales) would have come from.
BTW, that tower DOES exist:
http://www.dubai-search-and-find.com/burj-dubai.html
Holy moly.
Lol, that thing to the left of the Dubai Tower (in the comparison drawing) looks like Sarumans Tower. xD
At least the team mate AI does what you tell them to. That is very rare in fps games.
I will say that this seems to be how progress is made in game technology these days. A company desides to make a game focusing heavily on perfectly one or two mechanics (in this case sand physics), and then future games learn from it. If only the demo had featured more of it, though I did like how the characters slid a bit when they were running and came to a stop.
Story seems pretty straightforward and cliched, though there could very well be weird developments like you guys were hoping for, and the voice acting itself seems half-decent and the cliches are at least well-used.
But no co-op? Dammit, stop that. I’m not even into co-op very much, but that’s probably the only thing that makes these games worthwhile for some people, and it can make a good game great fun, especially if it’s couch co-op.
Naughty Dog beat them to the punch, Their sand physics and ocean/water physics are better imo from viewing this game footage. Ill just have to play this to confirm or deny my oppinion =)
It’s actually funny because Nolan North from the Uncharted Series is gonna be a voice-actor for one of the characters in this
Really? That may just push me to buy it. =)
Why are so many games trying to be Gears of War now? It was an okay game but it’s not something that developers need to come back to so often.
And the answer i$$$$$…
definitely cannot wait for your diablo 3 review, along with the current BS about the user accounts being hacked
and serious sam 3
Is it just me or does this feel like a knock off of SOCOM/Army of Two/Gears of War
oh man…. they took out coop, wtf…
i love coop games,
we need more coop games…
^ This. With Co Op in so many other games(Especially every Gears title), but yanked out of this one, the game will be harder to sell.
Lol the guy was like ‘shoot out the windows in the buss to cover the people’ so what does Joe do? NOT THAT. C’mon Joe at least throw the game a bone.
Why should he? If I was in a combat situation would I spend even one bullet trying to shoot out some glass BEHIND the enemy when I could put that bullet in their heads? Just because the game wanted to showcase some new physics engine tweak means we have to do stupid and retarded things.
And about this game, Battlefield 3 did it better. This looks like another bland “kill all the brown people” game. Didn’t you know non english accent = terrorist.
The game doesn’t look terrible. But it is defiantly not something I would pay $60 for. It looks more like a bargain bin buy, maybe $20.
3 years to make sand? You honestly think that’s easy?!
You gotta model the virtual rocks, then you gotta code in all the aspects of rocks for it. Different rocks need different parameters. Then you take those rocks and you grind em together in a virtual pit til you get sand. THEN you gotta check that sand, it might not be the kind of sand you want.
And don’t get me started on that virtual glass. That was made with virtual sand!
Mass Effect was all space agey magic. This is F%^&in science!
Heya Joe, do these fartin around videos mean you won’t review the games when they come out? Or is it a case by case scenario?
Case by Case. Still trying to figure out how to cover some of the games that I just dont have the time to review.
Thanks for the reply.
I can understand that, it’s a busy job and you have a lot to do with what time you have.
any chance you’ll review any JRPGs, or do you not like them.
just curious, i love your reviews as i know i can trust you to tell me how it is without any bullshit.
He’d do one JRPG and there you go, every JRPG ever made has been reviewed. Not trying to insult you or the genre, but almost every JRPG I’ve played was extremely similar, and if I was a reviewer like Joe with requests for every game on the market from new releases to 20 year old games, I wouldn’t waste my time with it. They’re not terrible, but they’re not good, so it’d probably be a “meh” kind of review.
Maybe Joe is a huge fan, and I’m an asshole, but I’m only guessing at the answer.
There are actually some really good JRPGs out there. It’s just that they’re few and far between now but they’ve been getting better in recent years. I remember Joe saying he doesn’t like the anime style in one of his videos but it probably has more to do with the fact that the Xbox 360 doesn’t have many good JRPGs. It doesn’t really seem like his type of genre either.
first hell ya
first
