This game is so bad I’m not even going to pirate it…irony? I think so.
NAIS!!! anyways I played a good pirate game last time, Age of Pirates i think was the name, its actually quite good
Another great review Joe. I almost fell over laughing when I saw you fighting that floating man and the monkey part was hilarious. There really needs to be a good pirate RPG or hell a good pirate game in general. I’m not going to play Risen 2 so I can’t suggest any improvements but I think the ultimate pirate game should have the following.
- High seas sailing. I believe that the most appealing part of a pirate’s life is sailing the vast, wide open ocean. It should provide an exhilarating feeling of freedom and adventure since that’s what being a pirate is all about but it should also be unpredictable because the ocean is a cruel mistress. Sailing should not just be a form of travel. You will come across storms, you can choose to go around or sail through them if you feel like a boss, and high seas combat. Speaking of which…
-High seas combat. During your travels you should encounter other pirate ships, merchant ships, naval forces, bounty hunters and giant monsters like krakens and mega sharks. You will have multiple options for these encounters. You can avoid them, befriend them, bribe them to look the other way, barter or just straight up destroy them. You can take them out from a distance with your cannons or you can attempt to board their ship and take them on in close quarters combat. Boarding the enemy ship to kill the enemy will be more difficult but the rewards are greater. You get control of the ship and everything on it rather than just some of it.
-Exploration. Give people the option to explore towns and islands for quests, treasure or to pillage the place. Pillaging or causing a lot of trouble will put a bounty on your head and the navy will be on the lookout for you. You can continue to cause trouble to build your notoriety. Having a lot of notoriety will earn you respect from other pirate crews and perks but will also increase the number of bounty hunters and navy forces out on sea.
-Customization. Customize your crew, clothes and ship. You’re the captain of this ship. It should feel like it.
-Multiplayer. There should be large scale naval battles and close quarters combat scenarios. Just like the fighting in the single player you can fight from a distance or attempt to board the other player’s ships. It should feature the standard modes like death match and conquest but there should also be a special mode where you and everyone else fight over hidden treasure. Take everyone out by yourself or join forces to form an armada. Split the booty between the group or betray them and attempt to take it all for yourself in the end. The loot that you earn in this mode will transfer to your single player game.
Noted…after I get the Warring Gods series done
despite all its fault, it’s pretty fun and addicting game (honestly, i played it like 7 hours straight). they fixed alot of things from the first game: there are alot of cool stuff to loot, some memorable characters and moments. yes, combat is all about button-mashing, but they added dirty tricks like shooting pistols when sword-fighting, throwing sand or coconuts into enemies’s faces, which i never get tired of. some quests are pretty fun and they require you to think how to complete rather than being pointed by arrow all the time. and it’s hardcore rpg, it’s supposed to be difficult at the beginning ( u cant just run around killing a panther at lvl 1, you must rely heavily on your teammates…). and reused faces can be forgiven because they dont have a huge resources like Bethesda.
In the end, it come down to personal opinion.if u like arcade , easy to play rpg, u should stick with Skyrim or KOA. if u like hardcore rpg like gothic or risen 1, u should pick this up, u wont regret it.
(sorry for a long post, but i really want to support this good game, probably the best pirate game out there. i would rate this 7/10)
i think he’s too harsh on this game and his opinion is a little biased. two world 2 has a similar combat system which is all about button-smashing with exploitable AI too and it dont even new features to spice up the combat like R2 with dirty trick either. but in that review, he didnt mention it like at all. and if you look back at risen review, they actually fixed almost of its faults: there are interesting moments and items now, nice interface and graphic, much less broken quests or glitches… why didnt he mention those improvements over the first one like he did with TW2 review??
Wont get this for sure now that ive seen this review. Ill end up grinding through it just to finish it
Well my opinion is that looking by your review I’d say fire all development staff and get some new ones, looks like a load of trollop. the best pirate rpg game I ever played was on the Dreamcast and I cant remember the name of it but it looked all anime and was sorta a copy of final fantasy but it had ship battles, and you could upgrade your ship, which was the best part of the game, although it was weird and the ships were flying in the air LOL, but still looks like it holds more true than that piece of shit you reviewing there.
If I were gonna make a pirate game I would make the combat system like Witcher 2 since I hear its pretty good (haven’t finished Witcher 1 yet cause the quest system sucks and I cant figure out wtf I am meant to be doing) or maybe even like Skyrim but in third person to make it more colorful, and have ship battles like in Total War but close range to feel like you are a Captain and not a General and have manual control of your ship ofc, and have it like the game in the previous paragraph where you can level it up ie:- get the crew more experience with available upgrades and eventually maybe get a new ship like upgrade from a galleon to a ship of the line or even choose a different direction of ship for faster speed etc.
For parrot you could use it for scouting and a monkey for stealing, so simple. I could go on and on, it just shows you how much effort went into risen 2 i wouldn’t even give it a 4 for below average id give it a 2 for piss poor effort.
Yeh someone mentioned below the game I was on about on the Dreamcast ”Skies of Arcadia” man wish I never sold my Dreamcast now some really good games on that system even if they were few…. never got to finish Shemnue 2 =/
Joe really nailed the points on this one, this was a disappointment to fans of the developers, it feels dumbed down in so many ways and the combat just doesn’t function satisfactorily, something which I’m amazed made it past beta.
I’m also impressed Joe was familiar with the Gothic series, which was a very impressive series by the developers.
Great review Joe i laughed my ass off at the monkey bit.unfortunantly i don’t have any suggestions because im not gonna buy this pile of shit. Not even gonna bother torrenting it.
Hard lesson ive learned is wait for the reviews for PB games.I thought gothic was good but it was far from great. My god G3 had a built in mechanic that lagged grafics cards. You could have the most smokeing machine at the time and would still get grafics lag.And these flickering textures you showed us tells me they havent improved their engine at all.
Flame me i could give 2 shits less.Good games don’t suck.
That ‘beer’ looks like piss! Get some proper beer down you Joe! Old Speckled Hen ftw.
almost all american beer tastes and looks like piss.
Sweeny Todd: What is this?
Smells like piss.
Looks like piss.
This is piss, piss with booze.
speckeled hen?wtf is that.Down a few Dos Equis and switch to a light……heavy beer has heavy hangovers.
Old Speckled Hen is an ale. Ales are the real stuff that people need to be drinking. Forget Lagers!
In my opinion, stuff like Budweiser should only be drunk as a chaser after several ales/if there’s nothing else in the house.
What a disappointment… You’re right, Joe. I did enjoy the first Risen (on Xbox) because it was close to the Gothic series. Honestly, I wasn’t so big on the pirate direction PB was taking, but I was willing to give it a chance. Too bad…
Also, way to avenge that monkey. lol
Joe try playing Swashbucklers: Blue VS Grey.
its way a lot better pirate-rpg than Risen 2
A RPG with:
-Pirates
-Voodoo
-Monkeys!
-A Foul Mouthed Goblin
…that could have been so awesome! If it was everything it could be, I’d buy that in a heart beat!
It’s a shame it’s not.
It’s safe for me to say after having played this for a while, SLY 3 felt like more of a satisfying Pirate themed, swashbuckling adventure.
The game is O.K, but mostly only worth a rent. So far, Operation Raccoon City is still the worst game I’ve played all year. It would take a lot to top that turd.
Damn it, WTH? NO SPELLS?
It’s just a fuck’d shit feast… YARRGHHH
Atleast… Risen 2 has improved for the consoles since Risen…
FABLE WAS AWESOME YOU DICK.
Funny how you can’t even back that up YOU PRICK
You don’t know how to respect someones opinion? Go ahead and go to your mommy/daddy and ask whats “personal opinion”
NO its not an personal opinion anymore, ITS A FACT. Fable SUCKS… (fable TLC was great tho)
well, go play fable or buy this thing?
it’s your money, not ours…
Please put this on YouTube already! My PC can’t handle SpringBoard that welll T_T!
They should stick with the pirate theme but do it a whole lot better. Make voodoo available from the beginning, make firearms a viable replacement for elemental magic, dump this horse shit combat completely and make something more akin to Witcher 2. They need to add sea freeroaming with random encounters for you to actually rob some ships, they need to improve voice acting, sound design and cinematography in general. I’m not sure they’re capable of improving any more, it seems like their time is up.
Ship VS. Ship combat
i like how you can see him get more drunk as the review goes on
drunk by mountain dew? i doubt that!
and they spammed us for months with ads for this shit, they could have used those money to make a better game instead
I hope there will be another “night of the Raven”. If it will come, Joe will enjoy it.
Heres to hoping that Angry Joe reviews Serious Sam 3 next.
Great review for a sucky game hehe, been loling all the way trough XD
nice XD spam bro
what you on about?
This game is easy as hell! And by the end of the game, i had so much gold i didn’t know how to spend it.
But i think most of Angry Joe opinions were valid.
Still, i think this game is awesome, even if the plot is weak and you can’t control your ship, there’s a lot to do and much to explore.
Hi;
sorry to hear Risen 2 sucks as well.
If you have some time to spare, try out its grandfather, Gothic 2 and its expansion.
Regards, Frank
So basically, you’re asking for the awesome that is Skies of Arcadia ^_^
Monkey D. Luffy is a pirate worth his weight. And he can’t swim
true but he HAD A REASON WHY HE COULDN’T FUCKING SWIM. AND IN FACT WITHOUT THAT ONE MOTHER FUCKING REASON HE IS IN FACT A GREAT SWIMMER YOU FREAKING MORAN.
Luffy at least had an excuse. He couldn’t swim because of the Gumgum (Or Devildevil) fruit. Before he was given special powers, he was a beast swimmer.
when was it stated he was a great swimmer? he got his powers when he was very young AND IF I RECALL he was never a good swimmer, even trying to learn to swim better until he ate the fruit which hit the last nail in that coffin.
ah found it:
“Like all Devil Fruit users, Luffy cannot swim. However, unlike other Devil Fruit users, he does not avoid water sports, and sometimes will jump into the ocean to save someone from drowning (though will drown himself as well). Luffy could not swim before eating his Devil Fruit so this has made little difference in this capacity. At the time Shanks visited Luffy’s hometown, Luffy had decided he would learn how to swim by the time Shanks left so he could leave with them, indicating Luffy was learning how to swim previously.”
from here: http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Monkey_D._Luffy/Abilities_and_Powers
its a wikia, so nothing is set in stone, but they do their best to keep it solid.
I could have sworn it stated in the show he was a good swimmer BEFORE he ate the fruit, and I also thought he ate the fruit when he was like 8 years old… maybe it’s a difference between the manga and the show, I have no idea. I only watched the first 100 episodes like 4 years ago, so I’m no expert.
Even if he wasn’t a good swimmer before, he still has an excuse as to why he can’t swim when he DID become a pirate, but still.
nah its the same in the manga.. he ate the fruit AT LEAST b4 the age of 7 because at that age, from what i recall, his grandpa took him to live with ace and the bandits, which at that point he already had his rubber powers.
i recently had a marathon of all 546 episodes of one piece so i can remember that at least
too bad, I had high hopes for this one, but seriously…it looks like crap, and for what we can see in the videos it also plays like crap. the good old days of gothic are gone, forever.
what is it like on xbox?
It’s gangsta… especially with all the annoying children who take up almose half of the gaming community.
Before I get hate, I AM an Xbox user and it’s probably worse than I make it out to be. Having had an account for 5 years, I can easily say there are way too many children on XBL.
XBL with the mics off isn’t bad…
I’m actually amazed you didn’t mention the Day One DLC. That was the red flag for me on this game. I mean Risen was broken on the PC (not sure how much worst it could have gotten on xbox but PC sucked) and then I see that instead of making sure the game’s sequel isn’t broken they make day one dlc. I’m sorry but if you release a subpar game and then expect us to dish out 60 dollars for the sequel don’t release Day One DLC; instead put those developers on the game to clean up the bad AI, broken graphics, poor lip sync, and everything else that made the first one suck.
I still hope that piranha bytes stops this risen stuff and goes back to their very succesful cothic which was fing ruined by Jowood. Thank god Jowood didnt continue the main gothic 1,2 and 3 characters story making piranha bytes continue on shit or think of something new which either is a hard for them or they cant bring the game mechanics and the little stuff tougheter! The story has never been shit it has been the gameplay!
I don´t think so. I´m very big fan of Gothic 1, Gothic 2 + The night of the raven. But that all their games go wrong and soooooo repetitive. Risen 1 was boring game, and same with this Risen 2. I don´t like their production anymore. I think they need to change something, hire some new story writers or something, cause it is still same and same and same. This studio want to still live from their famous Gothic franchise, but that´s not way how galaxy work.
Sorry for my english.
Oh Joe u should do Dance central 2 review by what ive seen and heard its realy fun and is way better then the original, but no online still!
I dont think its realy like that! U dont need to change something that allready was good aka gothic u just need to add new stuff and a new story! I would of loved risen 2 if they would of had a good combat system and lvl uping was more like gothic not like this!
Yep new stuff and new story. Finally. That´s what i was writed down. Yeah lvl uping system in old Gothic was great and combat system too. (And i love their inventory
)) But they need new, fresh and sexy story line, not this gothic like again, I heard a milion times that “story” and it´s boring – especialy to compare it with another RPG. Piranha needs revolution instead of this slow evolution.
They could’ve made it an open world sea game with some linear land areas sea battles and weather mechanics. Such a shame. There’s so much potential there.
Wait a minute… Skyrim story with “Kill a bad big dragon” is better? From now, I hate you Joe.
hmmm… of course not, but skyrim is about huge/many areas for exploration plus many mods, matey
Mods shouldnt be a point for a game being better, not to mention, “Exploring” copy pasted dungeons, and dull landscapes isnt all that great.
dunno, I liked it though , 138 hours,
loved witcher 2 too
Risen (and gothic) always was smaller than TES series. We love that games because it is hard to finish it. Angry Joe need to finish any gothic game (not g3:fg or 4 f***ing Arcania) to know why I prefer this game. Nothing to tell, just to feel.
For me this is much better game than Skyrim. For somebody who is Gothicgames fan this is awesome game.
i played both the Gothic games AND the TES games, and you must either be stoned off your ass, or crazy to think this is better than Skyrim. I don’t think Skyrim is the “best game ever” like so many people believe right now (Probably not even in my top 50 favorite games), but to say this… mess, of a pirate adventure (which I did rent) is better is just… wrong.
Whatever, personal opinion I guess. Sorry if I sounded judgmental, but really I’m just trying to grasp any concept of this SOMEHOW being a better game than Skyrim. Virtually no aspect I’ve played is better: Dialogue, Combat, Magic, Length, Size, content, and MAYBE story.
It hard to like Skyrim when everybody tells you this is like “Hamlet”. I tried to have fun with that game… but it is too easy, too casual and there are not many stuff from Morrowind (for me best in TES). Sorry Gothic wasn’t a masterpeace, and it shouldn’t be. This is simple, dark enjoyble story, hard fights and I felt like at home.
Skyrim is an overrated POS by the book.
Everyone is sucking its dick, calling it “The best game ever”
What does it offer? Lackluster combat? Boring armor? Copy&Paste dungeons?
dull landscapes? repetitive dragon encounters which bear no meaning?
Forgettable stiff emotionless characters?
The bugs?
Gothic / Risen is far superior in terms of Characters, Atmosphere and most of all – Fun.
Skyrim is like MLP, or Minecraft, or Dubsteb, its an overrated fad that everyone is following just because its hyped.
Fuck Skyrim.
Nope… Skyrim is not bad game. I thought before it is but no… This is just Empty game. Empty World, Random Quests, no personality… It is really cool to play this game but after first hour you already know what will wait in next cave.
Oh so it’s hip and cool to hate Skyrim now? It’s no longer cool to like a game because it’s too popular? Flawless logic, right there. Besides, Joe gave the game a superb rating and I’ll take his opinion over yours.
I hated Skyrim before it even released, you sheep.
And did i say hate it just because its popular? No.
It is hip and cool to be smart. For me last really good game from Bethesda is Fallout: New Vegas. But Obsidian recreated what fans wanted to play. Bethesda make good looking games, but after all I dont remember any good scene or character it is just engine and big world.
LOL @Valkenhayn1 “I hated it before it released” comment. You pretty much just blew whatever small credibility you had right there.
nope, I played thru gothic from 1 to 3, and just…no, this game clearly looks and plays awful. how they managed to make the combat worst than the first gothic?
Actually you can block by moving backwards
Yea you can also block by holding right mouse button, however not against most enemies, just against swords.
Once again, another game that thinks that a better game needs “dumbing down” to be accessible to reach a wider audience or something like that. To me, a sequel needs to have more, and while you can look into trying to make certain elements easier to explain, I find that if you are removing things your on the wrong foot to making a sequel. Think we wanted more, not less, which is why I hate Fables 2 and 3, all they seem to do was just keep simplifying things to a insulting degree that a 3 year old could beat them. It looks like when you try to dumb down things, you risk pissing off the fans of the previous entry of your game and its not likely you will attract new player in the process.
Though I still find it funny that even with the dumbing down this game sounds hard for the wrong reasons.
but the thing is, by dumbing the gameplay down, they made fights at the beginning so much harder! sounds stupid… i know
i am german and i looove the gothic games 1 and 2. i liked risen on pc but risen 2 is totally frustrating. the combat-system is broken, the first hours in the game you get your ass kicked, as you dont have enough gold to skill properly. and the loot is bullshit. no items but gold and trinkets at best. that is not rewarding. after 10 hours of playing i still get my ass kicked by some stupid animals…
but i must say, that the voices seem to be better in german – which is absolutely astonishing because normally german synchronization sucks a lot! so the voices are good and the musics just gives you kind of gothic-shivers. it is very atmospheric.
unfortunately i guess your score is kinda right. 4 / 10 sounds good. german magazines like gamersglobal (you remeber joerg, joe?) and gamestar overrate the game with more than 8 points not concerning the bad gameplay.
I agree with you on most of the points u touched upon this review.
Some stuff you left out was the inability to block vs beast/animals and how incredible hard it is to fight multiple enemies and the fact you are able to bork the whole game by not doing the quests in the same order as PB intended.
Altho I personally would give the game a little higher rating. Small 6 because I simply liked the atmosphere.
What really made me regret buying the game was the awful combat… It is worst than Risen 1. WORSE! You can’t dodge for shit! I mean Hello Pirate? Aren’t they like Fast Swashbuckling bastards with rum on one hand and a Freaking Sabre on the other and drunken reflexes. God…Loved the setting it is a wasted potential..like a Used Condom!
just give us old things back.
-bi-directional combat system (like in gothic1+2)
-let us control ship by giving orders to crew and maybe some random encounters, so you can opt to sleep during the travel to next island or watch the sea, but you can encounter enemies anyway
-multiple ways to solve quests (at least for bigger ones)
4/10..
I don’t know.
He has his points but it’s not that bad.
I mean yeah the combat is broken early, but early is the first island, maybe 2 hours and the game is like he said 34+ hours.
I don’t get his problem with the skilling system at all.
You are not supposed to be able to fight everyone at the start, or picklock every chest.
And I like that, I mean you have to decide what you want, you can’t just be perfect at everything.
And I loved searching for all the legendary items to boost my character.
Doing every possible quest in this game is hard work but it is rewarding!
It’s an actual RPG and not some casual-RPG that I could play through with my left ass-cheek while sleeping.
I’m not saying its a great game, but in my opinion 4/10 is too low.
At best, I think it’s an Average game. 5/10. I played it, and no it isn’t really “Bad” but it’s not good, nor great. It’s mostly “meh”. Still, I’m glad this series is making SOME progress, but it’s far away from competing with the best of RPGs out there. Personally, my standard for RPGs isn’t Skyrim, like Joe’s is, but actually a game few have heard of, Planescape: Torment. In fact, all of the D&D spin offs were some of the best RPGs ever made.
just had to say, nice to hear Planescape Torment mentioned again,
i played the crap out of that game back in the day, and still pull it
off the shelf once in a while, it is truly a great game
For a 10+ year old game, it stacks up very well against modern RPGs. That, and Fallout 2 are probably the best cRPGs I’ve ever played.
lol magic beans foliage XD
Combat system was dumbed down since Gothic1 for fucks sacke. Gothic1&2 – those are the days og glory for PyrahnaBytes. As for now.. i dont know – they wanted to jump on “cod-tards” train?
I think I’m just going to stop watching your RPG reviews from now on. You clearly have no taste or know what you’re talking about with them.
Should’ve done so when Witcher 2 got a lower score then Mass Effect 2, the worst written game of any genre in years.
Well your opinion is way too biased, so its not even worth the time to discuss it with you. Though i think that Joe was way too harsh on this one. i mean cmon, green lantern got the same score..
i agree. this came from a small company, and he complain about reused faces and somewhat mediocre graphic??? c’mon joe. this game has great island atmosphere, it make u feel like a true adventurer (maybe more than a pirate).
I complained about much more than those, but yes I mentioned those, because they deserve to be mentioned. And comparing an Action Game to an RPG game with the same score isn’t exactly a 1 to 1 comparison.
i not saying that all your complain are wrong, but some of them can be forgiven, and some of them are just unfair.
unmemorable story?? the game has its mystery in it. like who is mara?? why kraken started to attack ships?? why blackbeard is cursed?? it’s not the best story out there but it’s definitely interesting at the beginning and has its moments.
too hard at the start?? well, if u played risen 1, u should know that by now because risen 2 is exactly like it. at the beginning u have to stay alive, run away from danger opponents… later on after getting used to combat system, and learning some new moves like proper kicking and counter-attacking, then u started to kick ass.
No offence (and i know it’s your opinion), but i not suprised that u gave this game a low score. anyone who love games like skyrim and hate risen will probably hate this one too.
also, lack of pirate theme?? what come to your mind when talking about “pirate”. eye-patch, peg-leg, rum, parriot, monkey, drunken pirate, rum, humor, thievery and this game has all of them. only thing that is lacking is controllable ship. but mind you it’s a RPG not an action game which u can steel your ship and fight epic sea battle, so i think it’s forgiveable (why armanda of the damned got cancelled, why???)
“Clearly” don’t watch, and go enjoy “good rpg games” no 1 cares. if so…
It’s his opinion, some ppl like, some ppl dont.
U came here to get an opinion – u got it.
A good pirate game was the “Sea Dogs”, this days all of these wannabe pirate rpg’s worth the shitter..
Actually Sea Dogs has its sequels to this day, but under the name Age Of Pirates (at least here in Europe), and even if it has much more rough edge then Risen 2, its still a better pirate game with a lot more content AND SHIP BATTLES with your own fleet. I still can’t believe it that they left out this HUGE part in a pirate game. In AOP you can even sieze the friggin Flying Dutchman if you got bored with the regular ships.
why is pirates of the caribbean armada of the damned cancelled
it looks more fun then risen 2
A more hardcore rpg-mechanic with turn based combat and a broader skill range, and random encounters with merchant and inquisition ships when traveling to the other islands.
love the review and the show in general, but recent videos are extremely frustrating to watch because of broken springboard player. it’s weird because i watch a lot of springboard videos and your’s are the only ones that seem to be off. I hope you can fix it soon because I wish you the very best and will continue watching the show. cheers!
oh man i sure do use ‘because’ a lot:]
I bought the game myself and enjoyed it even with it’s shortcomings.
Haven’t played a pirate RPG before and I wanted to see how Piranha Bytes went with this one. They took a lot of things out from the table to fit the pirate theme so the combat from Risen 1 and Gothic games couldn’t of have stayed.
The only thing that I could say bad about it was the mainstreamed combat to cater to the console players(no offense).
Noooo not the monkey D:, nice beard, also never knew you can get drunk off mt.dew lol
So… it sucks.
