Thoughts on E3 2012 conferences
Wasn’t E3′s conference meetings awesome this year?
Hoo boy… E3, who here doesn’t watch this and expect greatness from all of these wonderful companies? You get new games, new consoles, new hardware, new everything! Well… maybe not everything is new and original and exciting.
Let me start off by apologizing for the quality and lateness of this comic, I had to leave state, and this was drawn in a car ride to Arizona. Also I really had to think about what I thought about this year’s conferences. As much as you guys hate it, I’m going to lay down my opinions on all of the conferences and try to be somewhat reasonable since I know I’ll get a ton of flack from fanboys.
Now I took a lot of notes on everything that was only shown in the conferences only, no showroom floor stuff, just what was talked about by all them big-wigs. The first thing I did was completely forget about games that were nothing but cinematics with no gameplay shown whatsoever! I’m not getting hyped over another Dead Island, been burned before.
Microsoft to me really pushed forward Kinect, probably more so than last year! I’m honestly surprised they didn’t just make a console with the damn thing installed inside! It needs to just curl up and die, and that whole Smart Glass thing with it doesn’t endear me to loving the Xbox more than I already do. South Park looked like the best of the bunch, Halo 4 a close second.
Second conference I watched was EA, dear god… what was new here? Maybe it’s bias on my part, EA has burned a good majority of us, and maybe I’m keeping my distance in order to protect myself. Nothing however made me stop and say “WOW! I cannot wait to play that!” If you’re into the games they showed, cool, but we should of seen something MORE from EA.
More disgusting bias from me, Sony pissed me off this year. It was a number of things that got to me, but it really was in the end, how long and drawn out their conference was. That’s a minor gripe on my behalf though, what got to me is how they’re basically becoming Nintendo with each stupid toy and crossover game they release. Wonderbook was the stupidest thing I have seen from them! Oh, let’s not forget Playstation All-Stars.
Putting all that that aside, Last of Us… looked… awesome! If I’m going to get a PS3, it’ll be for that game (and other older games for that system), and not to turn it into the next Wii U with a pricy Vita.
Now… Ubisoft and Nintendo, I feel like I should group them both together as it seems like a majority of the Wii U’s support is Ubisoft! They’ve still got great games on the other consoles, and honestly if I was to list off the best games for every console this year, you would see an Ubisoft game listed more than once! They stole the show, even though Nintendo’s showings were fairly weak! But honestly, I think that the Wii U is looking very promising, but a price would of been nice, along with a release date.
Well, I guess my comic expresses my thoughts more clearly than words can right now.

For the first few years of Cartoon Network’s existence, programming meant for Cartoon Network would also be simulcast on TBS and/or TNT in order to increase the shows’ (and Cartoon Network’s) exposure; examples include The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, Cartoon Planet, and 2 Stupid Dogs.;

Why the hell is everybody thinking, Sony is copying Nintendo with the Vita and the PS3?
The Remote Play concept was much longer established before the WII U was even announced.
awsome comic =) please review GoldenEye 007 on the wii
Dude, The Vita isn’t that expensive, especially for the tech. And Sony douse something that’s actually new (though not interesting) with wonderbook and they are coping Nintendo? You really are sounding like a fanboy.
After reading these comments,I now know that half of Joes viewer’s are a bunch of 12 year old dipshits who don’t know the difference between a Wii and a remote.Amazing Phil. This is one of my favorites, and the detail is great, these idiots couldn’t do better if there could copy and paste.
O.K,
I’ll admit, even though the Nintendo thing with Sony seems pretty extreme, but it does make sense.
Well, at least for the Wonderbook. It’s sort of like what the Kinect was originally for: Simple, Recreational Games. I don’t mind, it’s just not my type of game :/. The exclusives coming out for it look amazing, though, and the graphics and been upped for 2013.
Didn’t mind much for Microsoft, mostly because I only have a PS3, but it’s good that they’re still pushing for it, Sony’s moved on already…
Couldn’t agree more with the EA thing.
LOL at Ubisoft and Nintendo.
Awesome work, Phill. Now it’s time for you to think of a new strip for next week lol
well i was stuck at home so all i got was youtube E3 but from what i saw thats pretty true. i am PUMPED for AC3, Hawken, and Halo 4! (i am such a fucking AC fanboy) OH and dead space 3 and like Someguy i believe in Visceral and not fucking EA. i couldn’t give a shit about nintendo (always been more into sonic
) and the AC/Wii U thing im somewhat doubtful about. suprisingly im more pumped for hawken then i am for AC3. it just looks so….refreshing, in games now adays. im fucking pissed at kingdom heats for making a FREEFALLING GAME. atleast its not a full game and just a spin off for handheld. it pissed me off about how people are complaining that halo 4 is now cod because of care packages and load outs even though those are BASIC MULTIPLAYER GAME ELEMENTS and are just used by cod. ac3 singleplayer made me jizz all over my keyboard but im scared that multiplayer will be the same thing with new characters. like, there are changes, but they look really tiny. it has till november so im still exited. OH YA also dishonored. oh my fucking god. badassery in the making. well thats all i have to say, i think. any grammer or spelling nazi can suck my ballz.
As part of the unliving I have to say that this comic describes what almost everyone thinks, but it really would be nice if it wasn’t because it’s everywhere and I want to laugh with these. Please make more like the ones before!
You really need to write a comic distinguishing yourself from Joe so that people won’t keep calling you Joe whenever you post a new comic.
Hey Joe, if you haven’t already checked it out, check out Planetside 2 from Sony! (Although it lacks a single-player campaign because it is a MMO, it will be the biggest FPS game ever when it comes out!
I’m not Joe, but that does sound fairly entertaining. I’m more of a TF2 guy still however.
To me the worst was Nintendo. While the Wii-U could have some good stuff they just didn’t show anything good for it that wasn’t already at Ubisoft’s conference. I don’t own or plan to own a 3DS so nothing in that department. So basically I got nothing from Nintendo’s conference.
I loved Sony’s and Ubisoft’s. Pretty much every game they showed looked sweet and Sony had Beyond AND The Last of Us while Ubisoft had just one new IP, Watch Dogs. All three look amazing.
Xbox and EA were alright.
ZombiU is a new IP.
comic was pretty boring obviously made by a fanboy. Maybe try saying something we haven’t seen 1000 times.
If you can show me 1000 things you and everybody else has seen, I’ll admit to being a biased fanboy and take down this comic. Remember, 1000. If you can’t do that, then at least bring up an intelligent and fact based argument against what I’m saying, otherwise it’s just the pot saying the kettle is black.
Ignore him Phill he is blinded by his Jelous
I can see why he would be turned off by the comic. Not do to lack of talent but just because people (myself included) become jaded by E3 and anything related. It over saturates the web this time off year and it tends to off putting. I’m sure the 1000 was a figure of speech.
Besides something tells me that “Milfhunter92″ is a 12 year old acting tough online.
I find it hilarious that when Cartoon Network made Punch Time Explosion no one gave a damn, but as soon as a big, well known company known to make great games makes a similar game, it’s like “OH HELL NAW, THESE BITCHES BE COPYING BIG N!”
I love Nintendo as much as anyone would but seriously, calm down with this copy-cat stuff, it’s irritating. This is NO BETTER than some years ago when every FPS was a Doom clone, Hell, Smash bros. wasn’t even the first of it’s kind! I believe there was Power Stone for Dreamcast. People need to realize that without copy-cats, genres would never exist and that competition is always good for the consumers, that means that companies will be working harder to make bigger and better products.
What the hell is “Punch Time Explosion”? I haven’t watched Cartoon Network in a very long time.
Super Smash Bros Cartoon Network, and it’s not all Ben 10!
It’s a crappy cookie cutter clone of Smash Bros. featuring Cartoon Network characters. It’s pretty bad and was hardly advertised so I doubt many people know what it is.
wonder book – Bad.there were technical issues when they were presenting it
p.s.a.s. -it was ok but there just copying nintendo
everything else- it was great i got excited for games like the last of us and gow though im really disapointed with sony and the piece of shit called the wonder book
Watchdogs and Last of us were what stuck out to me in the E3, hopefully they can live up to their awesome trailer and gameplay.
And out of curiosity Phill, how come you call them fanboys? some people came across as haters in previous comics but they never seemed fan-boyish to me.
Otherwise keep up the good work!
Is this a joke!? Sony copying Nintendo? Ok so they have Sony Smash Bro.s but that’s about it for copy-cat from Sony. To each their own but I feel like Sony and Microsoft did far better than Nintendo this year. Without Ubisoft Nintendo would have absolutely nothing to show except Batman, a 6 month old port.
It took me a while but now I get that it’s supposed to be over the top. My bad.
Nintendo was fairly basic, they played it safe with Mario, Pikmin, and the Wii U. Ubisoft basically supported Nintendo the whole way through.
Sony to me lately is trying to catch up with Nintendo in terms of sales with toys and motion controls. I’m sure Playstation all-stars will be fun, but like any Mario Kart clone we’ve all seen, I can’t help but think that it’s a smash bros clone. To their credit, they had the best game shown with Last of Us, so I still love them. Just wish they wouldn’t go the Nintendo route and make toys.
They all sucked. I want my PC gaming!!
Microsoft did not do far better. They sucked, I was disappointed by them as the only good thing I saw was the South Park game. Everything else was just Kinect. Also I’m not a fan of Halo, so not really excited for Halo 4, though it might be good.
So a buttload of FPS games are okay, but a second game mashing together a bunch of characters in a silly fighting game… is not?
Sure, it’s not very original or anything — but if it’s a competent game I don’t see any reason to bitch and moan.
As for Wonderbook — it’s meant for kids and all, but I don’t think it’ll sell very well. It’s definitely an interesting concept, but they can’t expect to sell it at a high price.
Praising Nintendo though, and trying to give them some of the thumbs up that Ubisoft deserves? Sheesh.
I get the feeling you’re just another angry gamer. One who can draw, but still just another angry gamer — and a fanboy at that.
…Aaand now I actually read things properly and saw some comments.
I apologize and jumped the gun too early, since you seem to put credit where it is due.
I am getting very worried about the future of games because in my opinion, the gaming industry is dying in terms of quality. Ever since the ps3 came along, most games have been just bland and tasteless. They don’t have content and they are all 80% gameplay, 15% graphics and 5% extras leaving 0% for the importance of plot. I don’t see ANY plot content anywhere! God of War II, Assassin’s Creed, Heavy Rain and Need For Speed Hot Pursuit are great games but they still feel a bit empty (much better than others nowadays), because I can’t stop looking at them like they are a thing and not something bigger.
I remember when I played Pokémon Blue and I never thought anything like “oh, the gameplay is okay, the graphics are meh, the soundtrack is good”, I mean, games nowadays are much more like products to be sold than stories to be shown and enjoyed. The only game that I was able to care about lately was Demon’s Souls but even that fell to franchise milking with Dark Souls.
All I see is a bunch of Skyrims all over the place, milking their franchises.
I foresee another 1987
You just used Pokemon as an argument for story telling in games… I have never once thought of Pokemon having any sort of “story” to it until; Black and White. Even then the story is certainly not the reason anyone keeps playing those games. Also, best part, is you complain that “games nowadays are much more like products to be sold than stories to be shown and enjoyed” which is what Pokemon has been since day 1! Unless of course I’m reading your comment wrong, and you’re not looking at Pokemon in that way.
I didn’t talk about Pokemon’s story, I said Pokemon was an amazing game and I stopped at that despite the fact that Pokemon did have a plot (it was made of text but it existed so I suggest you check that). And when I mentioned games nowadays being just made of fan-service and publicity elements, I was talking about them bluntly whoring out themselves unlike most older games that were obviously made to be sold but they had a vision, and an original idea.
When an RPG comes out these days, it’s immediatly compared to other RPG’s and so, it has become most companies’ objective to make (not a Good, Interesting game but) the best game possible within it’s category with the same elements as the other games but with slight improvements or different colours so it’s no wonder we hear about rip-offs everyday.
WOOO
Well . . . this comic was disappointingly pointless. You could have done so much more and you instead decided to do this! I am disappointed!
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate you! but your art is down-grading. I watched some of your old art and they were great, as you improve both the concept and the art style start to get more cheesy. Go back to the classics you have and the way you saw stuff, I’m sure you will get the right balance eventually.
If you’re refering to the quality of the art itself, yes I will admit that this is the worst looking one to date due to things beyond my control, namely being in a bumpy truck for 48 hours. Better looking comics will be up shortly.
Yeah I didn’t know what the comic was supposed to be telling me
Love your show Joe but that comic is a really stupid representation of this year’s E3. lol. Talk about over exaggerated than a mofo
You really don’t understand satire, do you?
I don’t get why everyone on here attacks you viciously whenever you post a comic, I think they are funny xD
They don’t understand the art of his comics.
=(
was expecting more info about the extended cut from EA but nothing surprises me anymore.
Last of us looks cool but is it just me or is it a little too brutal, the trailer with the guy begging for his life or the guy being burned with the molotov cocktail really go to me, its just something really unsettling about it………..
realistic but unsettling.
Regarding the EC dlc,
I remember reading/hearing that EA/Bioware wouldn’t release anything at all about the EC dlc till it was released later this summer. So expect radio silence from them regarding it.
But looks like other people have leaked the information about the EC as well as new multiplayer dlc. From the latest leak they will be combined into one dlc and will be free.
LEAK link: http://www.complex.com/video-games/2012/06/mass-effect-3s-alternate-ending-and-earth-dlc-info-leaks
Yeah, with the exception of a few awesome looking games E3 was disappointing this year. Nintendo especially. It was nice to learn a little about the new console but they didn’t showcase or mention any good games with the exception of Pikmin 3. They had a great opportunity to build hype by confirming their Star Fox/Metroid crossover rumor and they could have at least talked a little bit about the new Smash Bros. game. I think Sony had the best conference but I agree that they’re slowly imitating Nintendo more and more. Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale looks fun but it’s obviously ripping off Smash Bros. They even put Smash Bros in the tags on YouTube but they’ve been removed since then.
xbox good
ea evil
ubisoft good
nitendo can be good
That’s it? Two lines about Nintendo!? Come on, bash them at least as much as you did with Sony! Their Press Conference was far worse! They came out last year, promising all kinds of stuff to hardcore gamers, and then a half year before the release, they show almost nothing core-worthy AT ALL.
I totally agree with the above.
Also was it just me or was Ubisoft trying to shove Assassin Creed 3 down our throats or what. Every time i looked at any E3 clip or anything, it was assassin this assassin that, blah blah blah- This series is just dragging on like COD and not in the good way.
At least COD has a decent campaign, AC all you get is snippets and when the story gets interesting it ends…WTF?
You know, I can make the same argument you just made, word for word against Call of Duty, and it still wouldn’t be the least bit insightful. Are you talking about what was shown at E3, or the games in general? Do you mean snippets of story in the single player campaign, or do you mean that because of CoD’s linearity you can get more story in less time?
If I was to look at trailers of CoD, could I not say “War this, war that, blah blah blah, this series is just dragging and not in a good way.” and have that be a relevant argument against it due to that game’s theme being WAR? Is the fact that there are sequels to this game means that the series is starting to drag on, what makes Call of Duty an exception?
We all need to think about these things before hand, and not make our arguments so paper thin.
Ahh my own words bite me back =( (well said btw)
Yes you do make a valid point, I guess I used a bad example to compare it to.
What I was trying to point out was the great lengths that ubisoft went to at E3 and in advertisement to try and convince those like me who where just disappointed with the last to games that honestly where rushed and slapped with a half decent multilayer with too many issues and bugs. Expanding to the vita with another portable version of the game that you will probably beat in 2 hrs tops. With exclusives and incentives that only show how desperate Ubisoft is to convince the consumer to buy their product.
Note this will bring the total games in the franchise up to 7.
I don’t know maybe im just bashing on ubisoft for all their half finished games and under developed ideas with potential and concepts that get all hyped up and end up flopping anyways.
But what ever. Back to you, love your comics and your style. Keep them coming =)
I won’t call what I said “bashing” as it’s all pointless opinion, and anything I say or do will hardly do anything to those companies aside from anger fanboys. But if you want anything from me on Nintendo, is that they showed NOTHING new, and it was all Ubisoft that was carrying the Wii-U along. I was praying they’d at least confirm that Starfox Metroid rumor, that would of at least been SOMETHING aside from the new Pikmin.
To say that Nintendo was the worst however is wrong, they have a console that’s more powerful than the PS3 and almost every new game the other companies have are coming out in 2013. Nintendo has almost nothing, and the competition is spooked because of it!
I didn’t say they were the worst, but that they were worse than Sony. Simply because they obviously had way more potential behind compared to Sony. The PS3 is at it’s end state and the Wii U is about to come out. And saying that makes it ridiculous that Sony had more exciting games to show than Nintendo! That’s all I’m saying. And we’ve yet got to see how much more powerful it actually is, since they’re still holding back with almost all details…
Well, the thing with Playstation’s conference for me is that I’m not counting any games that didn’t show gameplay and showed only trailers, Beyond Two Souls looks great, but I’m not sure if they were showing any gameplay or not. I love the playstation BTW, but damn that conference was long and that All Stars game still rubs me the wrong way.
I need to stop being a smash bros fanboi.
nintendo was definitely the worst on this year’s E3.
ZombiU, Assassin’s Creed 3, there’s the re-release of Batman and Mass Effect 3, it’s more than what Microsoft and Sony gave on their PS3 and Xbox 360 launch dates.
this is… exactly what happened =)
but you left out Konami
There was a Konami conference? I’ll have to check it out, also missed the 3DS conference as well.
speaking of konami and 3ds… new castlevania for 3ds =D
Wii U is still a giant meh for me. It doesn’t have ANY game that interests me and since the hardware will be comparable to that of PS3 and 360, when the next gen consoles come out, Wii U will be useless. It won’t run Unreal 4, it won’t get much third party support outside of Ubisoft… It’s sad to say but I don’t think Ninendo can keep up with hardware and could potentially go the Sega route in the near future. Other conferences were really bad. You have EA and their DLC milking, Microsoft with kinect and smart glass bullshit, Sony with wonderbook and Ubisoft with girl wood. Even if Sony’s and Ubisoft’s press conferences were slightly better because of he showcased games, they were still pretty bad. I’m hoping they’re keeping all of their good stuff for the next year where they’ll announce next gen consoles. Calm before storm?
Perhaps this is all true, but then again, there have been no specs for the Wii U, it’s unknown if it is incompatible with Unreal 4, I’m guessing that it won’t run it unfortunately. New consoles might not be seen for quite some time however, a lot of these new consoles are rumors right now, and a lot of them seem fairly shitty with these new DRM precautions. Wii U still seems like fun to me, even if it’s still lacking. In the end however, it’s all about the games, you can do a lot with an HD system, who knows what will come about from the big 3.
Is Joe insane? I mean I wouldn’t doubt the man himself but Nintendo really failed to sell the Wii U, most of the lard core games were absent and the ones like Arkham City shouldn’t have been shown on the press conferance where were original games like darksiders 2 or Aliens Colonial Marines? However I do think that Ubisoft won E3 and they pulled off everything they needed to please fans of existing series while doing something fresh and innovative with Waych Dogs.
I am not Joe. Joe does not write the comics, I do. When he does write a comic I’ll be the first to let you know.
@John0425
Look next to the author section at the top next time you read a comic
If it says Angry Joe, than it is Angry Joe
If it says Phill, that it is quite obvious that Phill is the one who wrote it
I seriously can’t see how people are confused by that
At least Sony showed a lot of potentially good games, like The Last of Us and GOW: Ascension. Two Souls looks great, but it’s basically Heavy Rain with an omnidirectional camera, which isn’t really new, and doesn’t get me hyped. I understand it’s Quantic Dream, since I had fun with Heavy Rain before, but Two Souls doesn’t seem interesting, because…it’s Heavy Rain. And although Playstation All-Stars is a SSB ripoff, at least it admits that. It looks fun and chaotic, like how SSBB was, and with some recognizable characters from my childhood, I’ll have some fun with that. Seeing Assassin’s Creed: Liberation may be my reason to get a Vita, but it still isn’t much incentive.
All I was excited about from EA was Dead Space 3, but only because Visceral Games is a good studio. I mean, the shootouts look awesome, and having a co-op partner could be fun, since I have a brother with me.
Nintendo showed pretty much Mario and one new game in a franchise we haven’t seen, and I was only excited about that one game: Pikmin 3, which I haven’t seen in a while, so that’s on my shopping list. Yeah, they got other games that have already been out on other platforms, which have most likely been played already, so I don’t really see any point of getting a Wii U other than Pikmin 3.
Microsoft had a lot to show, even though there are a lot of shooters. I’m a bit iffy about Black Ops 2 and Gears of War: Judgement; while Black Ops 2 looks like fun, with you actually being the commander now, owning it is in the balance. GOW: Judgement is, well, GOW, and probably nothing new. If it’s a reason to spend some time with Dad and my bro, maybe, but I’ll wait on that. RE6 looks cool, but I’m not much of a RE fan. However, I’m slowly trying to get into the story by playing through most of the main games. I could care less about Kinect; motion control is nice if you want that exercise while playing a game, but with a room as dark and closed as mine, I doubt I’ll get any fun out of it. Halo 4…dude. Do I even need to say anything? It’s awesome. That’s it. It looks awesome, gets into your face, great atmosphere, different enemy types, freaky new weapons, yeah, I’m sold.
Ubisoft, in my opinion, pretty much won my heart. Far Cry 3 looks okay, I may try that out, I’ve been an Assassin since ACI, so I’m definitely getting ACIII. Even if I wasn’t, I’d still get it because of how fluid and amazing it performs. Watch Dogs is THE game; the ability to hack everything and use semi-parkour-like movements? Yes, I am on that. What’s even better is that you don’t have to play as that one dude the entire time; you may be able to play as other characters, each helping the main guy along the way. Hopefully, these characters have a good story behind them, but to me, this is Assassin’s Creed: Hackers Edition, and I love it for that.
I neglected Watch Dogs, that’s the game that looks the most promising out of every other game out there!
I just hope dead space 3 doesn’t turn in an all shooter/non horror with a stupid AI following you all the game like in RE5
Well, there was a part in the demo where Isaac gets separated from his partner, so odds are there will be some moments where you will get separated from your partner.
I wouldn’t like to play the game just for those small parts when I’m alone and suffer or just get bored whenever the second guy is around
HAH, Fuckin’ awesome! That pretty much sums up this year’s E3 here. Though I do like my Dead Space (but I support the guys at Visceral Games, not EA), and the Last of us was pretty sick, and… Halo 4? (I love Halo and some of the new things they add in to it, but that’s all Microsoft had) Good comic!
If you havent seen Watch Dogs yet, please do. It’ll interest you if you like those games.
