Game of Thrones – Will HBO Cancel the Series?
Angry Joe discusses the excellent Game of Thrones HBO Series based on the Books. Can HBO continue to do the series justice as the costs rise or did they get in over their heads? How do they make money on expensive shows only 3 million people watch?

I am still on book 4 but my favourite characters are:
ARYA STARK
JAIMIE LANNISTER
SENTOR CLAGANE
nuff said!
You are by far the Stupidest Reviewer/Previewer I have ever seen on the known internet. I have to be honest! the only reason I come here is to laugh at your stupidity. Be a clown! Amuse me like that. Your excitement and geek pretenses are just dull. However your idiocy in trying to figure out financial balancing is cute, dumb, but cute.
But let me assure you that Season 3 has already been started, and they are nearly finished filming it. The reason Martin took along time was because people didn’t red his books enough for him to care. If you had researched correctly you would have realized that he said in an interview that he already has finished the layout for the remaining two books – and that he is now putting it all down on paper. The books will be ready far before the series reaches Season 5.
Anyway, I’m not here to offend, just want to let know you why people come here, and what they expect to see from you. Do what you do best, will you? Good boy . . . here, have a doggy biscuit!
You are wrong about why Martin took so long to write the last book. It is not because not enough people read it for him to care. that is a stupid thing to say, the books are consistently topping best seller lists.
The reason the last book took so long is because he had written himself into a corner and didn’t know how to get out of it. He had 90% of Dance with Dragons written for the last 3 or 4 years. He had hit a sticking point, now he is past it and he knows how the last two books will go so they will be out much faster.
As for AngryJoe. His enthusiasm is great, I love his videos because even when he is playing a shitty game he is still enthusiastic and still looking for redeeming features.
wow you sir are a jackass..you said you dont want to offend and then offend..you by far are the stupidest person/poster i have ever seen on the known internet..your only argument is about the time it took the guy to release the books? thats it ? you offended him about his excitement and about his research about the financial for FUTURE seasons and yet you didnt post anything about it only calling him dumb…..y? was he wrong? if he is then correct him..so far only dumb ass here is you…
Nah, probably he’s just one of Angry Joe’s “DUMB-ASS HATERS”
Will You finish your review on Star Wars the Old Republic?
fawk i wish i could get into fiction again, but i read too much fiction in the news..
Thanks Joe, now I’m going to have nightmares about GoT being canceled. Every night. Up until Season 3 comes out.
Fuck Joe! I love your show and I love game of thrones but that one sequence with the subtitles : someone’s gonna kill that lil shit is a spoiler !!! I didn’t know ! I was just dreaming of it but now when I do watch season 3 I’ll just be expecting it the whole time ! careful with spoilers you read online buddy. Much love from Quebec Bro, keep up the good work
One of the Top 5 shows I have ever seen, and I have seen upwards of 50 shows if not closer to 100.
By far the best character is Tyrion Lannister and Peter Dinklage does an incredible job portraying him onscreen. I also love Danarys and John Snow. Joe I highly recommend reading the series if you haven’t started yet. heck if you take your time with it you might even not have to wait for book six. I sadly couldn’t help myself and now will probably have to wait 2 to 3 years for book six =(
As the first part of storm of swords (the book) has about half as many pages as clash of kings, they might cut down the number of episodes
i think and this is worst case senerio if the cost to produce becomes to much..i think thier ACE up the sleve is to make it a Chain of movies like “the lord of the rings” instantly will they make there money back and then some..thats just my opinion..i dont know whether they should or shouldnt make it into a movie series either way i would watch them im a big fan..also i think that HBO’s main goal is to stay around the 70m mark to produce these SEASONS ..the action will ramp up but they will stay around those numbers to make it afordable for them.will it cause the series to lose its SHINE..its HEART if thy go low budget..idk…could they pull it off? idk…or will they add the extra money idk…will they make it into a MOVIE SERIES idk..but im excited to see whats next and as a fan i would love it if they dump millions upon millions to make it better and better but thats ust hopefull thinking
I find GOT kinda boring … I can’t even bring myself to watch the 2nd season. I know I’m in the minority …. but I just don’t get it. Now the walking dead, Breaking bad … those are some bad ass shows.
Wondering when Joe will do a review of the Game of Thrones RPG that came out?
That’s a game I’d really love to hear his opinions on!
I don’t have HBO so I haven’t seen the series, but I hear only good things. The books are always better though, and I have been hooked since I started reading them. I’m about to finish A Feast of Crows, then I have to wait until April for A Dance of Dragons to come out on paperback ($9.99 – paperback vs $24.99 – hardcover).
I hope they finish the series with the books as a reference, but I don’t see how they could given how long Martin takes to write them.
Read the books, Joe! I’m sure the show is awesome, but the books are always better.
I think a little of me will die inside if it gets cancelled. Thankfully the book series has me hooked, so I can use the shows visuals to better visualize the characters and settings
I can’t believe you didn’t give Tyrion Lannister an honorable mention in your video (had to watch on youtube btw… still can’t watch your vids on your site). Tyrion Lannister is easily the best character in the show. Smart and funny, easily the most memorable character.
Joe,
George has spoken about the problems that arose during “Feast” and “Dance” that made them take so long. First, they were supposed to be one book originally and then he realized it was too long, so he split it in half geographically. It was also originally going to have a time skip between “Swords” and “Feast”. He realized that this didn’t work for the narrative and had to rewrite everything he’d done so far.
When he got to “Dance” he ran into a problem with multiple plot threads coming together and having to rewrite events from different points of view to see which worked.
The long and short of it is that there was about a two year gap between books 1 & 2 and 2 & 3. If he doesn’t run into any more huge issues, it is not unreasonable to imagine “The Winds of Winter” being finished in 2014. Last I heard, he started book 6 with about 100 pages already done, having moved them over from “Dance”.
Game of thrones and The Walking Dead are the only series that I think is even worth watching now.
Well another thing to keep in mind that there are merchandise ranging from shirts to playing cards to board games so with any luck HBO gets a fair cut from things like these
I love GoT the show and the book (I am only finishing the first one, but I have books 2,3 and 4)
I think the main difference I’ve seen in the show than the book is that Ros is someone who gets alot of airtime and I don’t even think she was mentioned in the books (She’s a prostitute who makes it big in King’s Landing.).. I like that they aren’t afraid to kill off characters and keep them dead.. even though I hated that my favorite character was killed (no names, but he was the one in Westros, not with the Dothraki (sp?)) Oh the sexual relationships of certain characters are shown in the show, and wasn’t mentioned in the book.. (so far.. )
My favorite character now is Tyrion, what’s funny is Tyrion in the book is funny looking even for a dwarf.. he is supposed to have mismatched eyes and such… but the actor is really good.. I think it’s the first time I’ve seen a little person who was an ACTUAL actor! Probably the least disgusting Lannister.. though I do agree that Tywin isn’t one to mess with. I absolutely hate Cercei for all the things she’s done.. and I hate Jaime because of what he did in the first episode!
When I watched the show the first time, I lost track of the characters, I really suggest reading the book first because for a while I thought Theron Greyjoy was a Stark, and Renly was a Stark.. and didn’t know who the heck Stannis was.. (this is no spoilers.. Theron is/was a ward of House Stark, meaning he did grow up in Winterfell with the Starks..) And Renly and Stannis are brothers of the King Baratheon.
There is a incestual aspect in the show.. but I think it was interesting because they said that many British royalty were extremely inbred.. not brother and sister, but cousins was pretty common.
I do hope he does finish the serious, it is rough to read through a 800-1000 page book, but I’m doing it.
Outside the Lannisters, I do like Robb, Bran, Arya and Jon Snow. I can take or leave Catelyn (Maybe cuz I hated her as Nathan’s mom on Misfits.), and I downright dislike Sansa..
I like Dany and Ser Jorah..
though I know eventually that Dany will come to fight the Lannisters and the Starks, and the Baratheons!
and love the baby dragons!
great vlog Joe!
The costs will be somewhat mitigated by the fact that they can reuse a lot of the stuff from previous seasons like the props, costumes, sets, computer/special effects assets, etc.
If HBO does what they usually do, it will get really good then the show will be cancelled.
They do that a lot.
Ok. I’m still sore they never end capped Deadwood before cancelling it.
It’s one reason I wont subscribe (mainly i cant afford it so I always get he shows on DVD if I’m interested). I also really hate their stance on online streaming, but I can see where they’re coming from, I guess. So I’m a bit conflicted there.
As for the author, he’s been writing this series for a very long time. He’ll finish it when he’s ready. Rushing these things could be as bad as it could be good.
I’ve only seen season one so far, but it’s been good enough to finish the story the season is telling. So at least if it does get cancelled before it’s done, it wont be too bad. That and you could just read the books to finish it.
He also loves football Mr Martin, he near starts working on his books during the season. I used to follow his blog/ site. Yeah he does take his time but each book has been worth it.
I really wish HBO would do a stand alone subscription to HBO to Go. I bought the Game of Thrones Bluray to support the series, but if I could get HBO to Go without a cable plan, I would do it in a heartbeat.
Game of Thrones is a bad-ass series. I love it and it only seems to get better with each episode. Hopefully it will continue with its high production values. I would hate to see something like what happened to Rome (another high cost HBO show) happen to this, although I think it has a loyal enough and large enough fan base to where that wouldn’t happen.
Great show, I would highly recommend it to anyone, not just fans of the books or of fantasy, but fans of good TV in general.
Both the HBO series and the books are great. I already own the first season on blu-ray and can’t wait for season 2 to come out. My biggest concern is for George R.R. Martin’s health. The books are what’s most important to me, so even if the HBO series starts cutting corners due to costs, I’ll still have the original stories. One thing I will say about the show is that the casting director deserves a freaking medal. Each and every character was cast perfectly.
I really love Game of Thrones tv show and hope that HBO will not cancel it. I also hope that Joe would do a review of the video game based off the show.
the info i have seen, is that Game of Thrones has been averaging a 10.3 million gross viewers (TV + DVR + HPO Go + HPO on demand) per episode throughout season 2.
The show is doing fine me thinks
I agree with Joe’s and Canmore’s opinion about hoping the original author can finish his work. The books are awesome and the HBO series is great.
Also Joe are you going to start an Angry Army crew for Max Payne 3? Gotta get a crew started so we can represent against the built in team of IGN.
Hey ! Game of Thrones is actually aired at the same time in the US and Britain, so the money they make is the same in Europe, in which the series is so loved that even in France when I came back for holidays the series was aired subtitled (to avoid waiting for a year to have the dubbed version). I have no worries about the future of this series !
What’s funny about the books being turned into a show is the writer used to write for television. He stopped in the early 90s because he was fed up with producers and executives telling him to tone down things and remove characters due to budget. When he quit he decided he was going to write a fantasy series that, character wise, was a giant sprawling mess and had huge battles.
The first book in the series was called Game of Thrones.
Then said series was picked up as a TV show, and he wrote the screenplay for episode 9 of season 2. On his blog, he mused he was having trouble, “because the damn author wrote it too big and too expensive”.
I am sure HBO will start cutting some major corners to lower costs. What corners I don’t know because I am not following the books or the TV series.
Well, the first book came out in 1996… but better late than never I suppose.
I’m quite happy the series is gaining so much popularity, I’m just surprised Joe acts like people have no idea what A Song of Ice and Fire is when the books have been so highly acclaimed in fantasy circles for 14 years now (I refuse to call it “game of thrones”).
I love every single frame of GOT and fucking hope that the seriers carries on with any set backs.
Not really important for us to get too detailed on the finance’s of the show but just to hope HBO figure something out so that they can continue while giving the novels the due respect they deserve.
Favorite Characters are easily Tyrion, his bad ass father, brianne, bron, Jon, little finger, god damn everybody is so god damn interesting its hard not to be fascinated by all of them!
Everyone should give this show a chance…my friends who haven’t touched a fantasy story in their lives have fallen head over heels for this and its not hard to understand why.
Fucking Brilliant show..best thing HBO’s done by far since The Sopranos.
The show is amazing. The actors are all top notch, there is no undercutting here for any part of the setting or story. Hell when Tywen lanister is skinning that dear in season one while talking to Jammie, I’d swear its a real dear and wouldn’t be surprised to find out it was.
The armor, the swords, the sex, the death’s, and the script! THEY ARE FUCKING AMAZING. This show is in every way a worthy adaptation to the books, and although it has begun to make major chances, especially at the end of season 2 it is still a great show. With Martin himself involved in the creative process I know that no matter how the HBO executives force certain changes that the overall story will still remain the same and satisfying to loyal fans.
My favorite character is Terian Lanister, the Imp. He should be the KING! Damn the consequences.
Review the game, Joe.
Favorite character is Tyrion Lannister
He needs to quit writing story line for shitty video games and companion material and FOCUS ON THE NEXT BOOK!
Seriously need to play Magic the Gathering… I quit when it got expensive.
So after the first week?
Hahaha, good one man, good one. In the end I myself was playing only Pre-release tournaments.
Game of Thrones, I think, is WAAAAY too popular to be cancelled. If it’s a budget concern, they might not release each season exactly after one another, but maybe a year and a half to 2 years apart? Who knows?
[spoiler] how Joffrey isn’t a mutant or something his parents are twins
What’s up Angry Joe! First off, I have to thank you for all the wonderful and entertaining work you do in reviewing video games. I’ve been frequenting your site for over a year now and I always check every day or so to see if you’ve added another review or great video like the one you’ve posted about Game of Thrones. Keep up the fantastic work!
Ok- I was a bit scared scrolling down to the comments section of this vlog, mostly do to the fact that people are not very polite about spoilers and some people actually like to post them just to piss people off. It’s unfortunate and I’ve had a couple major plot points ruined because I made the mistake of looking at a comment section here or there. Anyway, I’m almost done with the third book and I gotta’ tell you; you should take a few weeks away from gaming and read them. With the amount of time it’s going to take to get each season done, you know something or a LOT of somethings are going to be ruined for you from the books; and if you are like me and truly love this series, then you are not going to want that to happen. I’m not sure how much you’ve already spoiled for yourself online, but I just read a chapter that’s about two MAJOR characters getting killed, literally one dies on the left page, and the other died on the right. I closed the book and looked at my girlfriend who was lying next to me in bed and said, ” I don’t know if I can do this…” LOL Martin is so tremendous at making such an epic world and making you care about so many characters in said world, and he’s also fearless when it comes to killing any of those characters off. I mean, the BALLS on this guy! He could have taken Khal Drogo and made him the Conan of his series for books on end, but nope, dead by the end of book one. That’s crazy- and it doesn’t stop.
Anyway- thanks for the video and yes, keep promoted support to GoT because if this series doesn’t get to be finished on HBO I, and millions of other die hard fans will probably impale themselves on a throne made of swords.
Take care.
I love Game Of Thrones, Tirean (sorry no idea how to spell it (the imp)) is my favourite character. His logic and ability to talk his way through situations is great to watch. I really hope HBO can continue to make this series and the ratings speak for themselves. If they invest, they should see a return, at least I hope so. This is a series that deserves to do well.
Looks interesting
hahaha Joe you kinda spoiled some shit here LOL
Joe! I love you and I love Game of thrones (and i’ve read all the books) but… dude you just said a lot of spoilers in this video!!
Your point about the author surviving to finish the book really sticks out. As any fan of Wheel of Time knows the author of that one passed away before finishing. The publisher has another writer stepping in with the notes, but it’s not the same.
They will cut thing for budget issue as already did in season 1&2. Plus they will probably cut books 4,5,6,7 in half so they can manage the budget issue.
If they do that he still has 6 year to release book 6 and 8 for book 7.
So yeah it’s possible but so much can happen in that lenght of time.
Well let’s put it this way, Game of Thrones is THE top show on HBO, right now it’s the only show on their network I watch, the ONLY reason I subscribe to them. On average let’s say they make $12.50 per month per subscriber. With 3m subscribers watching solely for Game of Thrones, then over twelve months, they end up making $450,000,000 per year because Game of Thrones is on their network. That’s going with a conservative estimate. It could be even higher than that and that’s not taking into account other shows they make money from, or DVD sales and international syndication as you said, or merchandising for that matter.
I think they’ll be fine money-wise. GoT is making HBO some huge bank. And, while the fantasy elements do get ramped up, and there are a couple of big battles, when fans say that shit hits the fan in book 3, (VERY MINOR SPOILERS) they’re talking more in terms of what happens to characters rather than epic-scale fantasy set pieces.
Favorite characters? Tyrion, easily. Jaime is just the smariest smarm that ever smarmed a smarm. Tywin is badass, even if he is an asshole. Yes, I have three Lannisters among my favorites.
Varys is sublimely written and portrayed, and in terms of “what a little shit”, there’s no one I loathe more than Joffrey.
Really, it’s more a question of what characters I don’t like, and that’s a small enough list.
why does absolutely no one mention bronn in thier favorites? if you ask me he used to be the only reason i sat through tyrion scenes until they started to pick up his character some more. hes a badass and cunning and streetsmart mercenary who saves tyrions ass on more than one occasion and just plain got shit done. one of my favorite parts of the blackwater battle episode was the exchange between him and the hound when they were psyching eachother out while he was about to murder the hounds ass with a hidden dagger before the bsattle started. then he saved the hounds life during the battle due to either not being completely heartless or that he just wanted to waste the motherfucker himself. I like to think it was the latter. I completely aggree that someone needs to just plain kill joffrey but even if they didnt absolutely everone in the seven kingdoms hates him and i find it hard to believe the lanniters ccould fend off the starks, stannises next attack danys dragons and a full scale revolution at once. By the way why is that dragon chick so popular? she always thaught she was kinda a bitch.
Much love for Bronn.
As for why everyone loves Dany, because a) hot, b) princess, c) “rightful” ruler.
mother of dragons is my pick
shes a hotty.
Being a bit of a jaded cynic not really interested…but, I feel a challenge is in order.
Guys, Games of Thrones, Sell it to me!
Its the godfather meets lord of the rings basically if it was directed by quentin tarrentino. Not everyone likes it: evangelical nutjobs who think its immoral, die hard fans of the books that dont like the changes, people who dont get it, or people who just dont like fantasy. If you are neither of those things theres really no reason you wouldn’t like it.
They really need to open up HBOGo to a monthly just-the-streaming service like NetFlix. Unlimited access for something like $10/mo. So you don’t need to have a satellite/cable subscription just to use the on-demand streaming.
They probably have some contract with the cable companies saying they cant do that cause then people wouldnt get cable they’d just watch it all on the computer. Cable companies are like that.
I am one of the few who couldn’t get into the series. I tried. I want to smack alot of the characters.
That’s exactly how you are supposed to feel lol
Yeah basically the whole first season was about a man of honor (ned stark) in a den of thieves (absolutely everyone who wasn’t related to him with the exception of his older daughter. I can’t remember her name cos its been like a year since shes been with her family and everyone either refers to her as “stark girl” or not at all.
