My verdict is 7/10 it made me sick at moments withe the visuals also cheaters. Still would give it a bad ass seal of approval
review the dark night rises an if u do give it a 10 its soo awsome
Great review Joe! I’ve never played a Max Payne game before and I’ve been interested in getting this one. Quick question, will I have to play the previous two to understand what’s going on in this one?
It’s better that you play at least MP1, the story was great. I can’t remember 2, I am feeling ashamed of myself now.
So Corporate Commander plays on Xbox Live?
I believe its time to destroy his console.
The date is wrong.

so where is taht SWTOR review you promised to do a LOOOOOOONG time ago?
7:50 – 8:20 is sooo me, I keep doing dumb stuff like that even at work xD
Very encouraging Joe – I’m happy that they didn’t screw up Max Payne – though from what I’ve understood I will miss the nightmare sequences.
BTW… Did they play a new episode of “Lords and Ladies” on the TVs you found in the game?
Seeing Joe play this made me want to write my own review!
Too bad it pretty much just covers what Joe covers…but its only 2 minutes long! If you want to…watch it?

gotta pick up the series some day, I’ve seen my buddies play it but I never got around to it.
I hear it’s a good game though it lacks for some of what made the earlier games more fun to play, such as the campy fourth wall breaks.
Also, HUGE props to Joe for including the shootout scene from Spaced
love it
Yeah, it does get pretty old and FRUSTRATING by the end, on top of wanting to make you hit mute just so you don’t hear the same god damn “puta” lines from the enemies.. (you must hear them say “puta” around 3,000 times in the game..)
You also start to get sick of the “die 4 times, get to the next checkpoint, repeat” stuff in some of the really stacked parts..
Another Good Review Angry Joe, Picked this game up the first week out and have not regretted the purchase.
About the last three levels, I think they designed it around having to rely almost exclusively with using bullet time to score headshots on people. With how easy it is to get max killed you pretty much have to use cover, bullet time, and go for a dome shot. As you showed the scrubs soak up too much ammo for anything else. This becomes especially problematic on Hard. From your playthrough vids it seems you were rocking the run and gun RDR style shootout. (its not bad necessarily but Max can’t take the abuse)
Great video Joe!, I really liked the introduction sketch! I always wanted to see those snoop dog and jennifer lopez videos went out to shit, anda max payne sure ensures that! Best action game of 2012, I want more max payne, more brazil, and of course, more portuguese oh yeah
This game was amazing. I loved wvery single second of it. The only bad… too short, even if it lasted for 3 days, tooo short; I would have played non-stop everyday of my life! Favela rules!
Supreme Commander Joe, do you plan to review Spec Ops: The Line since you played the demo?
It´s an AWESOME GAME with a mature, gritty and violent war story.
Since you liked the “mature” focus of The Witcher 2, maybe you´ll enjoy Spec Ops: The Line as well.
Supreme Commander, thank you for leading our crusade aganist the “cashwhores” (EA, Capcom, Activision and other servants of the Corporate Commander).
niceeeeeeeeeeee
I’ll give this an 8.5
Mainly because this is one of the recent games that will feel you like a TOTAL BADAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! The multiplayer is what I think the most outstanding feature added to the Max Payne universe with all of the crew stuff and the fuggin addictive multiplayer modes! While the Singleplayer component is top notch material, the two things that held me out for giving it a total badassery 10/10 is that the PC version’s requirements is over-humongous, 35gb of material, now i need to upgrade my computer for that, + the irritating cinematic effects, i love the cinematics of Max Payne 3 mainly because of the voice acting and the story, but the effects that’s popping in from time to time is extremely irritating at times, kinda reminds me of Kane and Lynch 2. Overall, it’s a great game, as Angry Joe would say, It’s worth every little penny of your money, go out and buy this game guys, you wont gonna regret it!
Oh and great review joe! it’s funny and entertaining at the same time!
Man, Max Payne has one of my fav themes of all time. Gets stuck in your head for days!
Joe please for the love of god it was an awesome review but what’s the song at around 08:00 i’ve been searching for hours!!
Way to many cutscenes in my opinion. Like, TB pretty much sums it up better.
do a fartin around with slender it would be funny
GOTY so far. Rockstar’s attention to detail and storytelling abilities are unmatched in gaming. Couple that with amazing animation and physics and satisfying gunplay and you get a fantastic game.
i only played the singleplayer and got really annoyed of the game in the last missions. in general i liked it, especially because of the great storytelling – the camera-effects aside.
but what really took me out of the immersion, were the millions of enemys. these braziilian gangs seem to have like 5000 members minimum. this was just too much and kinda ruined the “close-to-reality”-feeling the story tried to give me.
Dude, that’s really what is like in Brazil. We have this huge gangs with a shitload of members everywhere. So, this is actualy a pro, not a con.
Indeed, i´m Brazilian too and i support his claim, we got gangs from the lowest slums to the highest rooms of political power hahahahahhaahah
(Really dudes, it´s that serious…)
Mr. Payne could go to the Brazilian Congress to do some clean up, lots of criminals there won´t be missed…
Maybe a DLC perhaps?
I played this game at a friend’s house and I can say that it didn’t feel too much like a Max Payne game, I mean in the actual gameplay the game is no different from the other 1000 shooters in the market today. I think for the time they have to develop this game it could have been 10x better.
It’s a good and cool game, but it is not a Max Payne!!! Maybe 3rd Person Call of Duty… but NOT Max Payne! And please someone shut Max narration – it pisses me off! …also cinematics is useless
Another good review angry joe
bether use the steam summer sales
No one noticed how the story is basically a “Man on Fire” story? Even this annoying video effects were taken from this movie.
I completed this game and was very disappointed.
I can tell joe wasn’t playing the PC version. The pC version has a lot more glitches and issues connecting. Also seems rockstar doesn’t have as much support for that platform, it seems they are focusing on the xbox version more so. Which is a shame because the PC version is the better version to get because it looks better and aiming with the mouse is much easier even on hardcore mode.
Well to you. To me, I can’t see the difference in graphics because I don’t give a damn, and aiming with a joystick is easier than a mouse – to me.
People complaining about Max Payne 3 changing a lot, are the same people that complain about Call of Duty never changing. Rockstar made some things in a different way, but essencialy is Max Payne there, way more depressed of course, but why wouldn’t he?
And as Wrencher said, they did a great job portraying Brasil (Yeah I know, it’s with a Z in english). The only thing that bothered me a little is the voice acting, some of the main characters have a really weird accent, or just didn’t act that well, but I will consider that this is a detail only a small part of the game audience will notice, so it’s not that big.
Anyway, really great review, with the slow motion and the constantly changing looks!
I liked this game but it wasn’t Max Payne1.It’s balls to walls hard I try beating it on old school but the update delete all my Max Payne3 Data. I give it a 7/10
Everything I saw to date looks like GTA: Max Payne edition. Really not much of what Remedy made is left.
I loved the nordic mythology references, the comic book panels, the bizarre hallucinations (I had a feeling I was in a game, my movements being controlled like a puppet..).
This is just another Rockstar shoot ‘em up, only with the Max Payne IP.
Even Alan Wake has more in common with the first two games.
bahaha, yea sure buddy, keep being a gamer snob and missing out on good titles. Jeez
I can understand your sentiment, but over all its still a good game. Just like allan wake is a good game. And if you forgot rockstar helped make Max payne 2.
Point being they are both good games.
that, or maybie youre a complete asshole
I bought MP3 on release day and like Joe said, it’s worth all the money and time I spent on it. I would’ve put more TV Shows in the game to watch, at least baseball bat boy was there,
Hey Joe! Whenever you run across a cheater in multiplayer, report them. Rockstar has separate servers where they send all cheaters. If they get caught cheating there, they’re banned for good. If they reform their ways, they might get a chance to play on the regular servers again.
Cheaters?
The costumes changes were very appropriate and hilarious.
Um…no nobody expected him to give it a 10. He never gives out 10s unless the game is a truly groundbreaking experience that transcends gaming, and I respect him for it. Welcome to the fucking party NNecron.
I think you missed the point. I said everyone would’ve thought he would give 10 out of 10 UNTIL he stated those flaws at the end. That means I was convinced why he gave 8 out of 10 at the end and I don’t have any complaints about it. The only thing I wished from him was to explain more about the flaws for a little bit more. Like how severe the cheaters and glitches for example. How does the game lack emotional depth? What are the examples for each criticism? Those kind of stuffs.
By the way, why couldn’t you reply directly at me? I barely noticed you.
I find this step for Max to be logical, he is an aging action hero, he is aging with us, well kind of.
I loved the game myself, and actually bought it on day one and I am agreeing with you, it is worth a full price.
This is definitely a high quality review Joe if a little disorganized.
One thing you really depicted well about the game is how awesome it is, and the review surely shows what people can get from the game. The major complaint I have is that you tacked on the negatives at the end, while concentrating too much on the positives. I was bothered by this because from your video I think everyone expected you to give the game 10 out of 10 until you told the flaws briefly at the end.
But nitpick aside, I must say it was worth the wait and I enjoyed it very much. Take it as an advice and keep up the good work!
You must’ve never watched an AJ review then. Pretty much ever.
He glorifies the positives if it’s a good game, and glorifies the negatives if it’s bad. Do you really want Joe to whine for 5 minutes about negatives on a game he really likes? He gave it his bad ass seal of approval, and gave it a rather high score.
It’s not a knitpick, it’s just something that’s not there. Cheaters on multiplayer? You can’t spend any time on that because that’s not the devs fault, and Rockstar is doing something about it. Lack of content aside from shooting? He brings that up but it doesn’t break the game, since it’s not the longest story mode in existence, it would simply be nice and makes it an imperfect game. And lastly, EVERYONE knows this game isn’t MP1 or 2, and Joe touches on that. If you want in depth, read the comments on IGN’s review of it.
Why are you so defensive about it? I praised the review, and you have to come up to me and have to say all these things. Besides there are always something to be improved for anything. Besides why not go in depth with it? After all Joe has clearly stated at many points that his job is to inform gamers, and gamers have right to know more about the flaws of the game so that they can be sure whether they should be considered about them when they buy the game.
Besides it’s just my personal impression OK? I just wanted give him advice. The review as a whole was great and worth the wait. What more do you want from me?
I don’t ask him to talk for 5 minutes but at least he could’ve shown an example for each flaws he mentioned. That’s all I’m asking.
I heard there are a lot of cutscenes in the game some people say that’s a bit annoying so my question is are cutscenes annoying and are they skipable ?
I find cutscenes to be really entertaining, but yes you can skip them (you have to watch portion of them, as they work as a load screen)
i love this game and I bought it for 30 euros on the day of release
Im sorry Joe, but can’t agree on this one. The change of setting from the film noir style New York to a colorful brazil is enough a reason for me to boycott this game.
LOL! …I’m sorry. I don’t mean to laugh, its just that… that’s a ridiculous reason, but whatever floats your boat man, you are missing out for sure.
Maybe play the game before commenting. All the flashbacks are Film Noir…new jersey…but Max can’t really show his face in NY after MP2. This accounts for maybe 25% of the game….and the Brazil story is wonderfully done! Awesome game!
I agree with this review….good job Joe!
My first thought when I played this game: What is this?
Losing the cynicism Max had for a drunken, pessimistic man and the comic style presentation for something ripped from a film? No, thank you.
Just like Skyrim, when you take things away from a game instead of adding them, that should be a warning sign. This game takes the humor and background fluff away, which was the other part of the past games that people loved.
I’ll play Remedy’s versions of this game over Rockstar’s version anyday.
Disagree blackground fluff is all there, there are 5-6 clues in each level you just have to look for it, which leads to more exposition hell even sometimes devoted cutscenes, you might have missed them. Also Captain Baseball bat boy has never been better looking or funnier.
They cant do the same game three times in a row killing his new wife and baby every game my mang, but its cool.
In this game’s case, it’s similar to Diablo III. What background fluff there is ties into the past games, if only to remind you that they did these kinds of things better. That’s my angle on this.
And, if you recall at the end of the second game, Max said, “I had a dream of my wife. She was dead…but it was alright.” Meaning he let go of his demons. Why then make him a deadbeat drunk who kept lamenting on this? They could just as easily have made a game where he moved on without that hovering over him.
Just because you say something is ok in a moment of clarity doesn’t mean those demons won’t tear you down, years down the road! And Max has his share of demons!!
So, why not make the game about him moving on from that instead of staying focused on it?
@adam – actually if you followed the story it was him moving on from it. He realized that he didn’t get over it like he thought he did, after the attack on the headquarters he realized he was just being used and his own drunkenness blinded him to it. Its basically him fighting through the crap he dealt with in the first half and pushing through it. Which made the end more fitting.
No, its a good point he has, that does happen at the end of May Payne 2. I just look at it as – yea he was okay for awhile, but after a a few years of dead ends in his life he starts to fall again and this is that story.
Max is a tough franchise you cant really tell a happy story with him so it always has to be depressing.
Haha freaking eh, that was hilarious at the end.
Am I the only one who pretended to die when ever he shot the screen?
i thought the game was badass and the ending was amazing. Hope there is another one or dlc to continue on the story
according to rockstar they are only going to put out multiplayer packs and costumes. No plans for singleplayer dlc at this time.
man, just for the sayin, this game portraits Brazil perfectly.
i was proud to see a game where they don’t try to ‘make the coutry look better’.
i’m a brazilian sayin this.
Yeah, kinda like City of God, the video game! (Sao Paulo instead of Rio…but still the same idea.)
Mas vc tem que concordar que a dublagem de alguuuns personagens tava meio zoada né?
Great review. My only problem was how depressing and static Max’s Character was. He’d always complain how he always fucks everything up as he clears a room full of guys. Although he had reason to be in that state it was hard to get involved into the character as was just consistently in that state. Matters weren’t helped by Max cheesy self-deprecating lines straight out of a 1930′s Film noir. That being said the voice acting was excellent, especially by James McCaffery
