Two Superman: Man of Steel Trailers Debut!
OMG! I was in the theaters today and I got a Superman Trailer before my Dark Knight Rises showing! It makes sense since Christopher Nolan was involved at least initially with the Superman Movie – and of course DC wants to keep the success going. It surprised me because it doesnt necessarily start out like a “superman” trailer would. I’m intrigued.
There are actually two versions, one with Jor-El/Russel Crowe giving the narration and the other with Jonathan Kent/Kevin Costner. Check them both out below!
They both seem to focus on the “man” part of “The Man of Steel”, one focuses on making a choice the other about an impending fate.
In both we mainly see Clark Kent alone, working a fishing boat, hitchhiking, as a child playing with a cape (as I did when I was little). I think that focusing on this aspect was a great idea. Why is he doing these things? Perhaps he is choosing not to use his powers because he hurt someone or something tragic happened, or maybe he’s searching for a reason to finally make that jump to become the first superhero. Needless to say, I cannot wait!
Im encouraged, but I still think the colors are all messed up – too dark, too much mimicking Dark Knight. Yes, thats been Zack Synder’s style too, but Superman should be brighter, a symbol, a beacon of hope. We shall see.

Zach Snyder’s style may be dark, maybe what we could call Nolan-ish, but I wonder here… Isn’t DC trying to give a fresh start at each of their characters, without all the often-time kid-friendly background we saw in the classic movies, because young audiences today would not identify themselves with the characters?
I know, I know — it’s fiction. But, for a work of fiction to be well received, the key elements of the reality we live in have to be present. And look at the reality we live in: we got wars, poverty, famine, economical crisis looming over the horizon, social and ethnical isues, and these are to just name a few. So, the ‘sunny’ aspect of movies that go back a few decades, as much as it lingers in our memories and brings out our smiles… has come and gone.
Plus, this is not a movie about Superman. This is a movie about Clark stepping up to become the hero we hero we know and love. So, it makes sense that it’s a little darker.
so he will be the hero we deserve and the hero need
Question those who saw this in the cinema. Did anyone else think this was an Aquaman film for the first forty seconds or so of that first trailer?
haha yes I did think it was an Aquaman movie… I hope they do this too, and another Green Lantern movie, and Wonder Woman and Nightwing movies too… I liked everything about this trailer- so good!
i’m not a big fan of superman (to invincible for my taste), but i really enjoy the three first movies (yes even the third one). The fourth…they were a superman four?^^. And even if Superman returns were worldly regard as a unessessary movie, i still enjoyed it (just for the “wrong!!!” scene).
Ithink i’m gonna check this one out like the overs: with open mind. I don’t judge on the trailer.
so exited for man of steel I watched dark knight rises first day but there were no trailers so I didn’t saw the teaser for it
I re-edited the Man Of Steel Teaser trailer and voiced over Sean Connery. I would love to know your thoughts on how well I was able to sound like him.
Link to video Here: http://youtu.be/RsO878iC7No
My reasoning for adding Sean Connerys Voice.
When I first watched the original versions of the trailers I felt that Russle Crowe did a great job, I just couldn’t see him being his father. Don’t get me wrong though, he did a fantastic job with his narration. I just felt that Superman’s Father should really be a man’s man , a real tough guy with wits of Steel (Pun-intended). Let’s put it this way, the only person I could ever see giving Superman A spanking would have to be Sean Connery. (Or chuch Norris? JK lol)
I kinda like the direction Mr. Snyder is taking here. It feels like a rise to the man Superman is going to become. How he becomes this noble spirit we all idolize and strive to be. I can’t wait to see this one, to be honest.
were is the diablo 3 review… for real all these other reviews are about crap games….
Please dont suck please dont suck please dont suck!
The last thing i need is Superman Returns: Horribal reboot Part 2
But I think itll be good i believe in chris nolan
Joes right i think it will be good focuseing on the man part of superman and asking ethical questions about himself.
There using Gandalfs Fall music because Hans Zimmerman is righting the music still. But im gonna go crazy if i dont hear john williams theme during the opening credits. LOL!
Meh…. Think I will pass… At least for the theater release that is.
That’s the EXACT piece from Khazad Dum. They better have paid tons of money for that music!!! Copyright!
sure the up to date effects are going to be awesome. i still think it’s going to lack that epic battle that rattles the city and maybe the planet. superman can do that and there are villains that can deliver that. but without bruce timm and his gang at the wheel we’re going to another talk fest with supes flying around and being out smarted until he gains the upper hand….nuff said.
The Age of Reboots.
‘Nuff said.
WB needs to get their shit together and hire Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and the DCAU people to work on their superhero movies.
I think that even though it is dark – which I definitely prefer- it does not mean the movie is going to be bad. We know what Mr. Nolan has achieved with Batman, and Superman deserves something at that level. A brighter tone? I do not think so. The most recent Superman movie was freaking “bright”, and I think no one was convinced ….
*Gandalf points at Superman with an angry glare.*
Gandalf: Fly, you fool!
Americans and superheroes
And 50 000 remakes . Honestly I could never understand superheroes. Well the movies are fun
I lose immense amounts of hope I held for this movie when I realized Kevin Costner was playing Jonathan Kent. The man is an awful actor in every sense of the term.
The trailer for the new Deadliest Catch season is a little over-the-top.
And I thought Mike Rowe’s voiceovers were overly fawning…
Russel Crowe is so awsome!
At first I said this is going to suck but then I saw that it was by Christopher Nolan and now I have high hopes for it. Lets hope the Man of Steel gets some justice to this movie.
hey joe.Sup? nice to see this.I also wanted to request a angry movie review for the dark night so we can see if it worth to see.of course it is worth to see. Thanks Anyway
Let’s look forward tt that movie-tie-in-game
oh wait…..
Ah a Superman movie!
Let the bad arsery….begin
i found these really interesting, wouldnt it be strange if the entire movie was like this, with the majority of it following Clark and only a minimal part dedicated to Super Joe. . . . . i mean Man, Superman ;-D
So is this being based on the comics in general with their own twist, or based off “The New 52 Series”?
I hope it’s the latter, a twist on a story that’s already had it’s own twist might be fun :/
Despite Chris Nolan not directing this, it definitely reeks of his style. From what I gathered this will be Superman Begins which is awesome. I just hope they don’t ruin it with a ridiculous villain…
Attack of the Stilt Man!
I beg to differ, Joe. The mood of these teasers seems the right one to me.
The low frequency soundtrack and the casual nature of the perspective seen just hit the spot.
well, i liked what he did with the batman movies. i just hope we don’t get a crappy movie license game attached to this.
With a big license like Superman? They probably already have one in the works unfortunately.
Yeah, a bad movie licensed Superman game based off the movie. The worst.
Wait, they did that already…
I’m not too great a fan of Nolan’s Batman movies (haven’t seen the latest one yet) because whilst they are good films and deep, they lack the flair and campiness a comic book movie should have (in my opinion). “Why so serious” definitely is fitting! Not saying it should all be silly and bright, but more balance is necessary (Iron Man 1 is the closest to a “perfect comic book movie” for me) . I’m still gonna watch DKR though out of respect for Nolan’s work and his not caving in to the whole 3D crap – not to mention a desire to watch a good quality movie and not a cash-in.
That been said… I’m liking this approach for the Man of Steel. The Reeves movies were a bit too bright and campy, and the newer one was horribly boring (though I think Brandon Routh did a pretty good job with what he had). I hope this movie focuses as much on Supe as a person as it does on his mastering his powers.
Anime is made for people like you. Go away!
Fuck off you bloody twat. The OP made a valid point and at no point hinted towards anything related to anime. The dark knight trilogy did take itself too seriously and did overanalyze the superhero. It’s a superhero movie, you can be serious in a superhero movie but in the end it’s a guy running around in a rubber gimp suit, lighten the fuck up. Tim burton did batman extremely well (no pun intended), his two movies had serious points of atmosphere and reflection but also remembered that it’s bloody batman we’re talking about. it’s kind of hard to take a guy who’s arch enemy is a clown seriously.
Thanks Strider, good to see you understand where I’m coming from
Looks like one can’t even post the slightest critique or personal pet peeve without getting jumped on.
I’ve actually had that problem before. It seems like every time I post a comment with a concern or constructive criticism someone feels the need to say something about my intelligence or sexuality.
Good job Joe! you have reached 200000 subscribers on youtube!
I think going the slightly ‘darker route’ is the right way to go with this superman movie. I think the ideal of bringing hope to the people will resonate a lot more if it’s hope rising from difficult times.
let’s just hope we don’t see any silly moment like reversing time by flying arround the earth or stuff like that XD
& maybe they could bring another bad guy besides Lex, brainiac for example he hasn’t appeared in any movie
I’ve heard its going to be Zod this time
Brainiac would be amazing but no, we’re not going to get it- just Zod rehashed. Again.
The story is too much similar to Earth One reboot Superman from the start, I really hope this picks up in later trailers and not just show the “man” side with problems, but the Superman side where he deals with the treat to the world that only he can save us from.
Another thing this superman will be missing is his red tights, his costume now is based on the New 52 comic.
I think Superman without the red tights is for the better. Some superhero outfits are really silly out of the comics.
I honestly don’t know how to feel about this. On one hand, The Dark Knight was a decent movie (haven’t seen the latest one, nor am I really interested in it), but dark kinda fits batman, whereas when I think of Superman, I think of triumphant music, bright colors, and him doing his best to help all of mankind, regardless of race, nation, or religion.
I’m not sure if I like a darker reboot of Superman at all, but honestly I am not really a fan of ‘dark’ things anymore either. I used to enjoy and be intrigued by them, but it’s so overdone nowadays that I just yearn for a well told story that isn’t so depressingly dark or hopeless.
Though I have no interest in superhero movies anymore anyway, so it’s probably not targeted at people like me.
So, he wants to make superman into an emo teenager…
Whatever…
Pretty much they based thison the Earth One Reboot Superman…….
Certainly Henry Cavill does not look like a teengaer… at all. And the fact that something is dark or deep doesn’t mean that it’s too emotional or depressive. Why don’t you wait until the movie is released at least, before spread your senseless rant all over the internet?
On No Emotions! We would never want that in our superhero movie. Lets add neon lights, nipple suits, and 14 villains so the heroes never have to stop and actually think.
/rant
As soon as I heard the music it sounded straight away to me identical to a piece of music from the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, during the Gandalf scene (can’t be too specific). It would seem that they have borrowed Lord of the Rings music for their trailer.
This link confirmed my suspicions
http://therepublika.com/2012/07/21/man-of-steel-trailer-steals-music-from-lord-of-the-rings/
And while taking Lord of the Rings music isn’t what I would have hoped for, as long as they don’t use any more in the actual movie I will be okay with it.
Holy freaking crap, you’re right. I wasn’t even gonna watch the trailers, but because of this comment I did. I believe this is the end of the song ‘The Bridge of Khazad dum’ or something like that. That is EXACTLY the same song. Any Lord of the Rings fan should know this song by heart, seriously. I can’t believe they’d use it, since it’s so recognizable.
I said the same thing when I saw it in my theater. However thats a practice that trailers have done for awhile now. I’ve quit counting how many times I’ve heard the theme from DragonHeart in trailors over the years.
Yeah I caught that too because LOTR is my favorite movie series of all time. Kinda Lame IMO and doesn’t really fit superman. I always think he deserves blaring horns a la John Williams.Daa Da Duh Da Daaaaa, Di Da Duh. Ba BaDaaaaa! If you know what I mean xD.
Yeah like I was watching it and I first thought it was Man of Steel then when the music came on I thought it was a hobbit trailor but my mouth dropped when I noticed they stole Lord of the Rings music! I was like what? But i undetstand I mean LOTR had an amazing score of music.
I was pleasantly surprised by the number of good trailers before DKR, The Man of Steel one looked good but the one for the new Total Recall looked pretty good as well, there were a couple of others as well but I can’t remember them!
Not sure about the chainmail suit either
hmpf i dont know what to think good or bad? im gonna go with good.
this might actually be a good movie with kevin costner… i am looking forward to it, and hope to see more trailers soon! i hope it is not too much watchmen, because i really didnt like this flick.
Personally I think Superman, as with every superhero movie, needs to take a Darker path at least once. Batman needed to be dark because, that’s how the comics are these days.
A darker tone would make Superman much more human and break the mold of Clark being a dork all the time. That way we can relate to him a bit more.
I gotta disagree with you man.
Superman by his very nature isn’t human. Why should they try and make him more human?
The key point of supermans character is his nigh invincibility, held in check by a very, very rigid code of ethics and morals. Superman shows the world how they should be, how they can be.
It’s entirely different to batman, Bats and Supes, while both having the same end goals have very different methods.
Batman is prepared for casulaties, he has to accept that he can’t save everyone. Superman can’t. Once Superman accepts collateral damage, it can send him on a slippery slope to the dark side.
Supes has always had a darker side, but the great thing about his character is not the focus on the anger but the constant struggle against all odds to never give in to it.
Either way, we’ll see how it ends up, but if I get dark knight in a blue suit. I won’t be enjoying it.
yes, but it makes sense that superman would need to come to terms with the fact of what he is before he can show the world how it should be. The trailer shows that he’s trying to avoid coming to terms with the weight placed on his shoulders. Also its not humanizing him in reality any being who is aware of their own existence would have trouble with having that burden placed on them it comes with the territory.
I really wish Nolan wasn’t involved. I didn’t care for his last two batman movies, especially moving out of Gotham.
Personally, I don’t like either trailer. They’re to much of a prick tease. People may give TDK and TDKR trailer crap but this gave us nothing at all.
Why does the music sounds so depressing? It sounds like it belongs in the Titanic or over the face of Frodo as he cries not the introduction to the strongest superhero ever created.
Actually I’m pretty sure that IS music from lord of the rings. But yea I see what you mean. Where is the promised Hans Zimmer score!?!
Definitely, the music is from the LOTR’s soundtrack. It may sound depressing, but if you ask me, even without the music the whole trailer looks depressing. Maybe they intentionally did it this way… The dark colors they have chosen, the messages that some of the frames bring… It looks more like a drama instead of superhero movie. And especially the dead butterfly at 1:00 suggests that something tragic has happened. Anyways, that is just my opinion.

Your right about them using Lord of the Rings music
I don’t agree with the plea “it’s too dark, like dark knight”. Actually I understand “Okay, it looks real, like dark night” or “it looks like a good movie” or “it has great photography”. This trailer looks amazing. I don’t like the “weeee-eeeaaaaa-aaaaaa” kind of music. Mike Oldfield is a thing of the past, this kind of music sucks.-
I’m excited for this new interpretation of Superman. Maybe i’m coming off a Dark Knight Rises high, but I would prefer a slightly darker, more adult movie that dealt with the moral and ethical issues that arise when one has so much power and tries to do the “right” thing.
Superman has been needing a reworking for awhile now, and for me this looks like a step in the right direction.
I wouldn’t be concerned about the colors of Superman’s costume. The set photos and SDCC costume displays show that the suit can be extremely rich and vibrant or faded and muted based on lighting, so it’ll look fine in bright lighting. I would be more worried about Nolan/Goyer/Snyder missing the entire point of Superman’s character, given how Nolan stripped so much of the fantasy of Batman away that he actually made Batman even more implausible and ridiculous than if he’d left well enough alone.
Story and character, not visuals and colors, are what we should be concerned with here. A bright, jaunty look won’t save a movie that’s out of step with the character.
Well said, and don’t worry overly on the costume Joe, it doesn’t matter as much in comparison to the meat and bones of the movie itself (story, characters etc)
I really hope they focus on his anger towards the powerful taking advantage and expense of the weak. I like that in the original Shuster and Seigel he wasn’t the “Defender of Truth and Justice” but the “Friend of the Helpless and the Oppressed.”
Anyways who doesn’t want to see a rich corrupt fatcat get played with like a mouse toy over Metropolis Tower.
I know it’s just a teaser but…I’m sorry, it looks like Superman, as directed by Terrence Malick.
Also, I usually don’t mind stock music in a trailer, when it’s so obviously from another huge movie (LotR in this case), it’s a bit off putting.
But just my opinion.
Hopefully this is going for the same take that ‘Superman: Red Son’ had, with Superman being a godlike entity whose weakness wasn’t the crummy plot-device kriptonite but instead his morality
