Angry Joe returns to Movie Reviews with his Judgement on the Reboot of UK’s most famous comic book character, Judge Dredd! How does it compare to stallone’s 1995 version? Find out!

Went to see this last night, and your review was rather spot on having just watched it, Joe. I admit that the older Stallone version was one of my guilty pleasures as well and enjoyed the Dredd universe (especially being a 40k player). After having watched the older one in conjunction with this one, I have noticed some things that make this one stand out even more.
The biggest one IMO is Mega City One. Yea, in Stallone’s Dredd we had it as well, but it was more of a background then anything. The only scene that we got a feel for was the first bit with the Block War – everything else was just background to where Stallone could crack one-liners and shoot it up. In this Dredd, we got much more of a window to how people live in MC1 with poverty and people trying to get by leaving it any wonder why people look for escapes. Just these bits alone showed a great amount of depth in Dredd’s world (like the recycling bodies bit) without constantly rubbing our nose in it like Hollywood typically loves to do with social issues. It also leaves developers to more expand on the rest of MC1 if they can get a much better budget for sequels.
This coupled with Dredd’s character and paired with Anderson make a vast improvement. I saw it in 2D but looking back thought it might actually be a good 3D movie for once. Thumbs up Joe.
Its not a reboot of the 1995 movie, its called just dredd cause its based of the dredd comic. So comparing the 2 is kinda pointless.
Joe this movie is a wow! it does not matter whether 3D or 2D
Joe, i think it does not matter watching it without 3D staff. the movie is basically a Wow.
unfortunately for me what stripped a little of the experience if that i seen the thailand film -The Raid- which was extremely good for me, the martial arts the violence, it was really good so when i dredd started i was like ..The Raid ?? ..really.. i’ve seen this.. but as Joe said it was AWESOME xD
one sad fact is that as i heard they had funding problems making it which forced them to make it a 3D (no joke) hollywood has enough time and money to rape my childhood with Rayan Raynolds as the new HighLander and this new RoboBatmanCop but noooo a good movie, we cant give them the money
Hey Joe. If you want to skip the 3D effects but have to go see them in 3D theaters. You can build yourself a pair of anti-3D glasses.
Joe I saw it in normle 3D an the movie is a lot better in 3D, If more movies were made like this I would watch more 3D but I’ll need to get contact for my next movie.
glad to see a newcomer to the XD3D experience.
I like how you mention one of the high points of the movie is that it sets up and then delivers on a twist, and then describe the twist, ensuring that no one who sees this review can enjoy the same thrill. So if your intention was to make me want to see this movie that I had no interest in, congratulations, you did. Right before you cancelled any suspense it might have had. So good job on that.
Nice to see a movie review again from you! Really good acting in the beginning of the review!
This is a surprise. As soon as I saw that a new Dredd movie was coming out, I wrote it off, But you make a good case, Joe. It does look good. Also, Carl Urban is a great actor, under-appreciated even. Great review, Joe.
i wacht the movie and im 15 so it is not for adults
ps Now wait for the game
Please someone tell me the soundtrack’s name in 1:20!!!!Please
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZWQ86-1bUA la roux in for the kill, enjoy
hows it feel to know this film came in at number 6 in the box office, way behind the last house on the left, people like the mummy returns over this movie, in fact stallone’s version did better & that was considered a flop, ah well , maybe the man of steel will be the same pace as the nolans batman films & break box office records, cause kick ass action flicks dont do it anymore.
remember that.. 2-D Glasses… DOT COM!
I have two pairs.. Thank ME!
The damn hyphen! URG!!
Can someone please share the name of the song that starts at around 01:00 of the video? Thanks.
Its a remix of “In for he Kill” by La Roux http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZWQ86-1bUA. Always reminds of Mass Effect 2 for some reason.
This is what the ambient at the start actually made me think (the song is featured in the recent american Nikita reboot), but I can see the resemblance to what you say as well. Memories going back to the time people still had high hopes for the ME franchise. 🙁
When Joe complains about unneccessary CGI in movies, his own Greenscreen fails quite badly.
Great review Joe! Glad you decided to go back to movies again.
Joe, I love your work. You really know a thing or two about video games, but movie reviews… well, this was the first one I saw from you and I’m disappointed. You were all over the place, you didn’t knew where to start, what to say and in what order… You didn’t mentioned how slow motion scenes are explained – the usage of the drug slows the time, so Dredd and his partner move normally, but junkies see them in slow motion. I like when a gimmick is explained like that in movies, it justifies the usage of certain effects. And then that spoiler… Why? You said that movie was good, so why ruin it for everyone who didn’t saw it yet?
I’m sorry, I just don’t think you should do movie reviews…
Thx for the review Joe! I was already curious about this movie from what i read on rottentomatoes, but your review sealed the deal. The instant it comes out here in Finland I’m seeing it.
But, just one thing about this review:
Why did you spoil the twist?! Now when i see the movie, the tension of reaching the boss is greatly reduced for me because now i know there is a ‘hidded boss(es)’ waiting.
Other than that, thx for the review and it is good to see another movie review from you, Supreme commander, i’ve missed them.
Sadly the film only comes out in Holland the 11th of october. But it seems awesome
First Film Brain, then Angry Joe, this movie just seems awesome…
There’s just one little problem: this won’t be out in Germany until f***ing NOVEMBER!
What was the point on spoiling the twist of the movie?!
The movie sounds awesome. It’s too bad it’s getting such little attention. I didn’t even know it was out yet and why are people bringing up The Raid? Isn’t The Raid that Asian movie with hilariously bad subtitles? What does that have to do with Judge Dredd?
Last part made me laugh so hard 😀
Nice review! thanks! i actually don’t mind the spoilers, it’s not like it’s a mystery film.
He goes in, shit blows up, he goes out.
Have a good week Joe and thx again =]
Great review, I just saw this and have to agree 100%, hope they make a franchise of this!
Loved the review. Loved the movie! Like you, I loved the original. Yes it was a bit cheesy… but the comic actually had that cheese in it. They had that “I am the law” in every comic. The new movie was gritty.. perhaps a show of what Mega City 1 looked like early.. when Psi Judge Anderson was a cadet…
Loved the movie… and disappointed in how poorly the movie did in the first weekend. GO SEE THE MOVIE! I want to see the sequel with the DARK JUDGES!!!!!
Woot, woot, another review! I hate to be “that guy” Joe, but if you read this, are you by chance going to review the upcoming X-Com game…? You seem to be a fan of strategy and it’s looking to be a fairly unique take on the turn-based style.
There’s also a demo just released on Steam for those of you who are interested!
I like your show, Joe, but did you really have to put so many spoilers about the movie in here. A little bit of warning would be nice. I had to stop watching this half way through, just to avoid the spoilers.
Aww, Joe, why didn’t you say there were spoilers? T.T
Otherwise great review, I’m glad you’re back to reviewing the movies. (just don’t forget to warn about the spoilers. Pretty please?)
That’s not RoboBatCopMan, it’s a poorly made Commander Shepard knockoff.
Saying it’s a copy of Raid: Redemption is kinda short sighted, not only was Dredd in production first Dredds stratoscrapers are a key part of the Dredd franchise, it’s like saying star trek ripped off star wars because it involves various alien species and a space ship, and anyway there’s already plans for an american remake of Raid.
Awesoem review, and spot on, but for one thing…
You mentioned the crooked Judges without saying there was a spoiler!
Shame on you Joe!
Also, the soundtrack was goddamn perfect for this.
It’s now my gaming soundtrack.
I’ve seen it twice now, please people, go go go see it! we can see a sequel!
Awesome review Joe! I was going to completely dismiss this movie but now I really want to see it. Looks awesome.
Well Joe you did it again, you took something I had NO interest in and made me want to see/ buy it.
It’s nice to see you escort back to movie reviews. 🙂
If it makes you feel a little better, I read somewhere that the makers of the film didn’t want the “3D” on the title, but had no say in it.
Really great movie, I’ve been fighting with myself over whether I should go see it again or not. I hope a sequel or two get made, because they’ve said they want to introduce Judge Death.
Saw the flick yesterday, and like Joe I had top see it in 3D (both theaters in town have a single 2D showing each). I pretty much agree with Joe on most the points he makes. What I’d add is that in the ’95 version they tried to cram everything in they could from the comics, save for Psi-Judges and Judge Death. This time they stripped out all the excess and gave us what I’d call a core movie, the core of what Judge Dredd is. I can’t say if one version is greater to me personally, buth are good flicks in their own rights.
Now for hollywood to make Sandman and Preacher into movies. Or even better, HBO mini series.
Noneisabuv thelaw. IYAMDELAAAWWWWW!!! Sorry, couldn’t resist.
nice stallone lips lol
Its clearly one of the best action films in recent memory and i hope they make the second one which will have the dark judges.
It bugs me that its being compared to the raid cus it takes place in a single building but they are completely different films
I find it funny that so many people (including those on this site) dismissed this movie just by the trailer. This is the PERFECT example of why not to judge something before you actually see it… yes, pun intended.
this was in production first before the raid. but the 3d made it be released later
Unfortunetly we can’t see this movie here in Hungary. No cinema I know will show it. 🙁
This looks like a copy of The Raid: Redemption but I guess I’ll check it out anyway.
AWESOME REVIEW!!! JOE ARMY LIVES!!
The video is set to private. Also can’t watch.

I will have to check this film out for sure.Looks pretty good and after watching Joe’s review i feel its now a “Must watch”…. I also really liked the 1995 Dredd movie.
I also hate having to watch movies in 3D…Lame….
