Joe talks about it at a Conbravo 2011 panel with Spoony and Mike “Birdman” Dodd. Also a good video.
The item is expensive because if it is cheap everyone would have it.
Honestly the item is NOT overpriced. Its meant to be a guild wide purchase so Joe did it right. You have to look at it like this. If it was cheap or even half price, practically EVERYONE would buy it. And I can tell you from experience, if there are more than 1-3 commanders in a WvW map it is WORSE than having NO commanders on a map. They end up just splitting the forces and they never get the critical mass needed to actually take a well defended castle.
Lets face it, WvW is generally a clusterfuck. 1 or 2 decent commanders is JUST ENOUGH order to turn a pointless mob into a reasonably ordered mob. And we have all seen how much damage a mob can do. The Commander’s Guide really helps focus the pubbers or non guildies, who generally make up about 50% of any WvW population. This is really crucial for turning a WvW stalemate into a winning side. I’ve seen it happen.
So yeah if you don’t care about WvW or are only casual pvper, this item is not for you. please don’t even consider buying it. Its meant for people and guilds that are SERIOUS about winning in WvW. And remember, winning in WvW means world wide bonuses for exp, crafting nodes, and drops in PvE so it matters more than you think.
Its not like a Green Party Hat or cosmetic item either, like other games.

It seems Joe is now sucked into/obsessed with Guild Wars 2. In my completely honest opinion, this game is very overrated. It’s not a bad game, it’s just not amazing. I am not really a big fan of the combat system, it feels somewhat sluggish to me. Seeing all the hype for this game made me want to pre-purchase back in May, and now I regret it. I don’t even play it anymore.
Anyway, I agree with everyone who says Joe needs to get over GW2 and make videos about something else. I think it’s important for game reviewers/critics to not get too focused on one game. That’s why I like Totalbisquit, and I’m going to stick to watching his videos instead until Joe puts out some new content worth watching.
Something isn’t overrated just because you say so… the game is getting a generally great reception because it’s very different from your typical MMO experience, and it’s actually very fun for people like myself who really don’t enjoy your “traditional” type MMO’s. Falling onto the hype wagon only sets a person up for disappointment, you ought to make your own judgement on a game before you invest in it.
Though I agree it’s about time Angry Joe gave us another review to enjoy, though to be fair it’s been a stale release window up until the last couple of weeks, and there are many more games coming down the pipe, he can’t really review them all!
Which is why I said “in my completely honest opinion”. I’m entitled to think the game is overrated if I want to, just like how you’re entitled to think the game is awesome if you want to. It’s all a matter of opinion. All I was conveying is that my personal experience with the game has lead me to believe that GW2 is overrated. This is not the collective opinion of everyone who has played the game, it’s simply my own.
FINALLY, someone who agrees with me. Here’s my two cents on this game:
The combat is sluggish and feels -a lot- like WoW’s (without as many skills and skill slots), most of the PvE feels incredibly boring and repetitive with constantly reused enemy models and animations, lackluster Event bosses and generally effortless difficulty, and the Heart system is basically WoW’s questing without the “talk to this NPC to initiate this quest” -part.
I’ve somehow managed to push my character to level 40, but so far I’ve yet to see any of those “mind-blowingly epic” boss battles they promised us. This will probably change later in the game, but isn’t that kind of contradictory to what they told us back when the game was still in development? That there’d be no glorified rat extermination missions? Dredge are rats, too, you know.
So yeah, I’d say you’re more or less right, John.
AJ, as much as I’d like to hear more about your newest MMO exploits, isn’t it about time you moved on and started making some new reviews, or something? Surely you’ve noticed by now that the last couple of months have been incredibly stale for your site.
PS: I’m not here to start an internet argument: just to voice my own opinion. Hence, I will not be reading any of the replies made to this post.
Have a good day, everyone.
I find it laughable that people that have played LESS THAN HALF THE GAME can say “yeah its overrated”.
Just because you have not seen the “mindblowing epic bosses” does not mean they are not there. By your own admission you only got to lvl 40. That means you have only done 50% of your main quest. And you are only high enough for the second dungeon, barely.
The difficulty is absolutely NOT effortless. In fact there are some downright HARD fights. (Krait Blood Witch anyone? and that is only lvl 20) Remember games have to be played by people of ALL skill levels. As a veteran gamer of 20+ years, yeah I can beat literally ANY game. Only humans can put up any challenge unless a game outright cheats. But my wife and daughter who are casual gamers yet fans of gaming can barely get through Little Big Planet. There is a lot of stuff in GW2 that they absolutely need my help with. From a casual perspective the game is challenging.
The heart system is in NO WAY like Wow quest givers. Yes there are a few static people that give the same quest over and over. There has to be or you could potentially not have any quests in an area. But if you hang around an area long enough dynamic events just spring to life all around you. I have never played an mmo before where you can be harmlessly mining ore one second and get charged by a rampaging warband of centaurs on their way to attack a nearby human settlement. btw Yeah I got annihilated by it. And it really made me think. This is more than just a simple mob respawning. This is a naturally occurring situation caused by the players taking and holding the centaur lands.
My last point is GW2 is a game that you can play as a family/community. The cost of 1 guildwars games is $60 one time, play forever. The cost of any subscription game, $15 /month forever + game. in less than 4 months the game has payed for itself and you never have to think about it again. People can drop out or come back with NO PRESSURE and NO COMMITMENT. That is worth so much in a game like this it can’t be understated.
Its funny how game developers can put everything into a game that people have always wanted, and some still have the balls to say “meh its overrated”. My question is “Do you actually like ANY games?”
PS: I don’t care if you don’t read this post as its not really for you.
Hey, fair enough, I don’t mean to lash out or anything, I just think the term “over-rated” is one of those buzz words that annoy me since it doesn’t really mean anything! No offense intended, I can appreciate differing opinions, I just like to see more actual context than simple buzz words thrown into the air. Everything can’t please everyone of course!
I agree with you completely. As long as people are not jerks about their options, they should each be allowed to their own opinion eh
Joe, did you feel like the guy who was sent to buy food in exchange for your last cow and came back with a handfull of beans after buing tha book?
Please start making reviews again Joe…We like what you have done with the interviews at E3 and the movie and such …But time to move on please
I lost all hope… Joe is dead to me.
guy having fun cool off come back a year or two
Hey, Could you please do an angry review or a lets play of borderlands 2? I think you & other joe could get up to lots of trouble(the good kind) in that game. Its a lot of fun & id really like to hear your thoughts.
Yes borderlands 2 is an awesome game. It sucks that it came out now and has to compete head to head with GW2 at launch.
Joes wheres our reviews?
Some of us don’t play guild wars 2.
Whatever…
Omg, so they created an overpriced item to create a RAID? A RAID? Are you kidding me!? A freaking 30 man raid function is considered an elite item. Wow.
Yeah dipshit, because wow have Raids of 40 dosn’t mean all the game need to have the same shit. stupid Blizzard Fanboys. WoW is not the mother of the MMORPG.
Shits lame, when did this become a Guild Wars 2 Fan site ???
+ 1
I almost passed out…JOEEEE OUR MONEY!!!!!
I agree that it’s a completely overpriced item, so I’ve got nothing else to comment on this video, except for the following:
OMFG! You can see me in the video at the end! I’m “Dragonis Flamma”, the big heavily-armored red guy with gray shoulder-pads, and I’m wielding two swords. It took me some time to join the fight, but I was there for most of it. It was SO awesome!
Thanks for the fun time, Joe.
I’m scared of the day when my server (Fort Ashenwood) is up against the Anrgy Army server in the World v. World! Might have to join up myself one of these days.
The Commander’s Icon appears for everyone on the WvW map. Even if you’re not in the same guild or if the squad if full and you’re not in it. For THIS reason, the Commander Book is worth it’s weight in gold because essentially makes the person with it THE beacon in WvW.
The purpose of the books is for large guilds (like our own) to appoint Commanders of different Squads that have different jobs… like we did anyway with Mumble making the Vanguard and the Rangers and the Berserkers.
As far as what I can tell from the old dev notes on the game, they planned on WvW to be even more massive then it is now. So maybe later on they’ll open more things up that’ll make this book seem cheep? *shrugs* Either way, we’re kickin’ ass!
I honestly think the item’s well priced as it’s meant to be a guild-wide purchase where everyone pitches in.
Also, I killed Angry Joe in World v World a couple of days ago. So worth it.
Hi Joe!
I would like to ask you for a music playlist if you have one!
Btw , 568 $ ? Holy shit , that’s a lot of money for an ability like this. :/
It’s not that bad really as its meant to be a Guild purchase. Joe himself said he has something like 700 members in his guild . That means that per person the cost is only like 81 silver. That being the case you could farm that amount in a few hours if you completed some high level content and sold all the drops. I mean the level 3 training manual is like 10 gold iirc. And my money maker alt (farms mats, sells everything) had way over 1 gold at lvl 20.
There are people on my server that have bought the commander’s guide using THEIR OWN MONEY and not even relying on guild cash. Money in GW2 is stupid easy to get if you know how.
Sweet! Teach us how, whats the secret? I absolutely wana make money stupid easy(cause im kinda lazy!)and would love to know the easy way to get rich quick!
The End has made me want to get Guild Wars 2
is it possible to have 2 commanders in the same squad?? maybe rises amount of max party members.
The most. Overpriced. Item. EVER.
For Now…
Nice Joe that was my biggest question, that commanding tome crap.
Now i know our guild won’t buy it. (For now untill they tune it a bit more)
P.S omfg what an army you guys have there, too bad i’m on the EU… =]]
Thanks for the info and have a good week all!!!
there is no way that is worth 100 gold if it was 35 gold then it would of been worth it
If it was 35 gold EVERYONE would get it. Thereby reducing its usefulness. It really only makes sense to have 1 or maybe 2 commanders in a WvW map at any time. If you have 5 commanders, you might as well have none unless they are well coordinated. And that………never………….happens.
At last you got it! Pretty awesome. Not sure it was worth the 100g, but if it helps to better coordinate at least some of the guild in WvW it’s still a nice thing to have.
That’s some pretty expensive equipment but believe it or not there are actually even more expensive, and completely useless, things for sale in the world of online gaming. Behold!

Also, has anyone ever told you how awesome your taste in music is? Because it is.
Angry Army ho!! We own Shiverpeaks!
That’s one hugely overprized item!
You finally got it! awesome!!
To bad it’s not all that worth the 100G -_-
I love how Joe’s sighs and “Yeah..alright, whatever…” types of comments drown out the music at the end, lol…
Hello, does anybody know how can I get an invite to Joe’s guild?
Yes, I can. Send me a message on Amanda Safai. If Im not on, whisper Nytefury.
What server do you guys play on?
Northern Shiverpeaks.
