RoboBatCopMan? Dick, I’m very disappointed.
Dead or Alive, you are coming with… who the fuck is that?!
ComingSoon.net has the first images of Joel Kinnaman in the New Robocop suit. And I’ve got my first reactions.

Downright terrible. As you can see our favorite cyborg looks more than Batman than he does Old Detriots protector. WTF!? Where the hell is my 80′s chrome. Robocop is chrome PERIOD. This thing doesnt even look like a robot, it looks like a rubber suit. Or a mixture of Iron Man, Judge Dredd and a bunch of rubber. Why does Hollywood have to pander to itself and play it safe by changing an iconic costume to look more like some other film franchise that’s made billions (Batman)?

Let’s just hope this is some kind of early version or a prototype and not his final design. From the looks of it, I get the feeling we are going to be seeing a more agile Robocop, running, climbing, jumping – Acrobatic. I understand its 2012 and this movie wants to differentiate itself but can a guy get a little chrome on his Robocop? Obviously this is my first knee jerk reaction – but its a large misstep in an otherwise encouraging production.

Simply titled Robocop, the film will star Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson. Directed by Jose Padilha, its set to release August 9, 2013.

The Brazilian director José Padilha is best known for the Police Action drama, Elite Squad film series (The highest grossing film of all time in Brazil). The script has been written by Gran Torino writer Nick Schenk, so we can hope the film will have some sort of emotional impact (obviously not anywhere near Gran Torino, but still). The plot description is as follows:
In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Robocop? WHAT THEY DONE TO YOU?!!
I agree with joe but too me this makes him look like a s&m slave
Oh no… The same shitty nerdy drama all over again. Every time an old franchise gets a remake, all the “fans” start nitpicking just because a single set shot. I’m really disappointed with you, Joe, because a remake will always be an easy target to criticize, and creating a bad hype is as worse as creating a good hype. Hype sucks. Let me address the quotes on the “fans” word:
- If you like RoboCop, you should be happy that a new movie is been made. Period. If it makes money, we will be able to see more from our beloved Murphy.
- If you enjoy the old design, it’s easy. If you’re truly a fan, go to your dvd collection, and watch it all again. RoboCop it’s not about a goddamn suit. It’s about a great cop and father, who is brutally murdered, and through technology, he can come back, avenge his death, but with the conflict of the old (Murphy) and the new (Robo) personalities.
- This suit is basically Deus EX HR suit. Oh, wait, a game that ripped of almost the entire concept of RoboCop. And nobody complained (because it’s a great game, of course). So, if we put the RoboCop name on the box of Deus Ex, I would expect all the “fans” complaining.
- The only thing we should care, AS FANS, is if the movie will be entertaining, awesome, badass, and respect the tale that it’s getting the inspiration from.
Low blow, Joe.
ROBOCOP IS NOT ABOUT A SUIT! IT’S ABOUT MURPHY!
Isn’t it ironic that you just complained about Deus Ex HR ripping off Robocop and yet you complain about people rightfully accusing this Robocop ripping of Batman. I mean it even has Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton in it. A bit one sided wouldn’t you say?
Could be a reference suit like Iron Man where more bulk is added in post allowing the actor/stuntman to be agile while adding the mechanics later.
I like your thinking. Let’s just hope they think the same way.
Let’s face it new age Robocop must be a lot more agile. The old one was virtually a sitting duck for heavy weaponry. He couldn’t even run! On the other hand the above suit looks really cheap and rubbery. No metallic feel to it, no chrome no attention to detail no nothing. I certainly want to believe that it’s just a prototype.
That’s actually someone’s idea of Robocop? It looks like knockoff N7 armour.
Oh Hollywood, will you ever stop disappointing me with your bad remakes?
I can understand them wanting to shift away from the old Robocop’s design. Let’s be honest here people, that 80s Chrome Robocop was exactly that. He was designed in the spirit of the 80s ideal version of robots and men who are robots who deal with an angry bald man who later plays an angry bald man in the 70s.
It would look too cheesy now to try and imitate that (and I doubt there are any directors willing to take a serious stab at doing it and making sure it doesn’t fail). But at the same time, this is utterly generic. It looks almost painfully similar to SyFy channel’s version of The Phantom:
http://splashpage.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/the-phantom.jpg
There is no comparison to Batman, or Judge Dredd or Phantom though, because of just how bland it all fits together. Its utterly one-toned with no real definitive shapes or eye-catching detail. I mean godang! The SyFy Phantom has more cosmetic appeal than this for me!
Its a steaming pile of fail, because saying it was a pile of crap would be a disservice to crap everywhere.
I hope the actor gets an arrow in the knee, really! How can the fuck up RoboCop this bad? HOW THE CAN FUKING MESS WITH ROBO FUCKING COP?!!!!! >:(
Not another Knee Joke!?!?
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
While I would like the new robocop to be able to move more, as it would be interesting to see him run and jump and urban explore and etc…….it just feels to much like the G.I Joe battlesuits they had, or batman, or frikkin spy kids 3-d.
In the original movie everything about the suit gave the impression that this was more machine than man, flesh and metal as one.
Here you have a rather generic ‘stylish’ black battlesuit that just to me looks completly forgettable.
“I have a bad feeling about this.”
Crackhead thug: “WHAT ARE YOU?!?!”
Robobatcopman : “I’m confused!”
Heh LMFAO!
Looks incredibly generic and not at all like a machine. When I first heard of the reboot I thought it could be done better than the original with modern special effects, like in later Terminator films where you can see through gaps in machine parts on an otherwise human looking character, that kind of thing.
With this new look I hope they’re not going with the lazier option to have life-like cybernetics as the technology used rather than the more mechanical prosthesis look of the original. The name is RoboCop after all, not CyberCop.
My first reaction: The shit is this!!!
And while my second reaction is pretty much the same as the first it still smacks of trying too hard to differentiate itself from the first. It seems more anime inspired than inspired by the original robocop.
I don’t see Robocop, all I see is Grayfox from MGS…
Fem Shepard and Bruce Wayne had a baby !!! N7 MassRoboEffectCop !!
Good God! Judge Dredd and Batman had a love child!
… They called him Renesmee.
Looks like a cheap halloween costume version of Crysis.
