RoboBatCopMan? Dick, I’m very disappointed.

Dead or Alive, you are coming with… who the fuck is that?!

ComingSoon.net has the first images of Joel Kinnaman in the New Robocop suit. And I’ve got my first reactions.

Downright terrible. As you can see our favorite cyborg looks more than Batman than he does Old Detriots protector. WTF!? Where the hell is my 80′s chrome. Robocop is chrome PERIOD. This thing doesnt even look like a robot, it looks like a rubber suit. Or a mixture of Iron Man, Judge Dredd and a bunch of rubber. Why does Hollywood have to pander to itself and play it safe by changing an iconic costume to look more like some other film franchise that’s made billions (Batman)?

Let’s just hope this is some kind of early version or a prototype and not his final design. From the looks of it, I get the feeling we are going to be seeing a more agile Robocop, running, climbing, jumping – Acrobatic. I understand its 2012 and this movie wants to differentiate itself but can a guy get a little chrome on his Robocop? Obviously this is my first knee jerk reaction – but its a large misstep in an otherwise encouraging production.

Simply titled Robocop, the film will star Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson. Directed by Jose Padilha, its set to release August 9, 2013.

The Brazilian director José Padilha is best known for the Police Action drama, Elite Squad film series (The highest grossing film of all time in Brazil). The script has been written by Gran Torino writer Nick Schenk, so we can hope the film will have some sort of emotional impact (obviously not anywhere near Gran Torino, but still). The plot description is as follows:

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.
