Borderlands 2 Virus Permanently Kills Characters
Owners of the Xbox 360 version of Borderlands 2, may find an infuriating surprise when they play multiplayer.
According to the Borderlands 2 forums, it seems that there is a nasty little virus being spread from online games which renders your characters unplayable should they ever bite the bullet in the lands of Pandora. Using external editing programs, hackers inserted the virus into the multiplayer gamescape which would switch the game into a hardcore mode variant with permanent death enabled. Gearbox has responded quickly to this incident with Community Manager Chris Faylor giving some helpful advice to keeping your character playable.
“We also advise that before ceasing play, users always select ‘Save and Quit’ from within the pause menu while their character is alive. If after the death of their character players find themselves at the main menu of Borderlands 2 instead of respawning in-game, be sure to immediately select ‘Continue’ to resume playing as that character. ”
While it has thus far only been reported by 360 users of the game, I would urge caution to those playing on the PS3 or PC platforms. While it is unlikely this virus would infect either platform as Gearbox has already submitted a patch to negate the virus to Microsoft, we are all well aware, there are people out there who only want to ruin someone else’s day.

Does LV Has Outlet Store
Thanks for the heads up. Glad I have a memory stick to keep a copy of everything.
This is the first time I can think of a virus being on a console. Or as Matrias in the comments put it, a mod file that has gone rampant.
Wasn’t a virus exactly, a modder found a file that turned on hardcore mode (Think Diablo 2/3) and activated it, the file was added to the game after Capain Scarlet DLC was released. Any games he joined after turning HC on changed the other peoples settings to the same when he played with anyone else, then the same happened when they joined a game so it spread like a virus.
Anyway it looks like they will be adding hardcore mode further down the line so look forward to that if your into it, and remember to back up your saves if you do. (cheating ftw?)
Wow… good thing I didn’t play Borderlands 2 online yet… thx for the heads up
Online with randoms suck anyway, they hoover up all the loot always want to go to different places then you and dont even bother reviving you, the hell I revived you after you fell for the 6th time in 10 mins?!
Ha hahahaha so damn cool !
You mean the virus?
The whole situation is funny to me
I didnt get Borderlands 2 because of the online community in part 1. Million point shields, 5 million damage per shot pistols and undroppable loot that spawns hundreds of items when you try to get rid of it are just a few of the things gamers did to ruin the first one. Its unfortunate because Ive heard its a really great game and most of the fun is in the co-op teamwork. There is always some loser who wants to prove hes better than by hacking the game…
That’s why you play with friends, not randoms.
Well that sucks
It’s definitely a shame there are people out there trying to mess with legitimate gamers.
Its simply Handsome Jack’s plan, basically he switched off the Hyperion make you not dead machine, why dosint he just use it hes rich so he would be Immortal?
gearbox pounced on this one. the problem is distributing the counter code.
This is why I usually avoid online multiplayer. There is ALWAYS that guy or group of people that want to ruin the game for others. If I had a list of why I hate online, this is #1.
A: good thing i dont like Online Play, but knowing my luck i’ll run into this thing offline anyways ; _ ;
B: xbox + hackers? gaming blasphemy! only PS3 gets hacked! (epic sarcasm)
C: “we are all well aware there are people out there who only want to ruin someone else’s day” yep, and they should be perged from society >:O
Good to know =) so glad all the 360 users don’t need to sweat about this stupid thing enymore, and I sure hope that the PS3 or pc users don’t get to experience this virus. if my acc on my PS3 should have been del’d, then I would scream, cry, rage, take a long walk with my mad face on, then return home to play it all over again
hehe
nah pc users have more thinks to worry about people will use cheats to be able to see others people, its stupid and ruins the fun.
thank god for VAC
Some men just want to see the world burn
So… playing violent video games does not mean you will become violent, but deleting some virtual character makes you want to see the world burn?
LOGIC… it eludes you…
Is it just me or did you miss the point entirely? He means the hackers just want to screw up everything for everyone else.
Man, it just makes me so mad that there are idiots out there who want to ruin someone else’s day. I’ll never understand these types of people. Still, thanks for the heads up. I didn’t hear about this until I checked the Angry Joe Show for news, and read this.
Seriously? You can’t understand? pfffff…. it’s funny that’s why.
It’s just a damn game!
It’s not like it causes you any harm…
Seriously? You can’t understand that people spend their time building their character? Time=money to someone like me, so when some douche wastes my precious time I definitely don’t see how its funny, and if they weren’t some pussy hiding behind a keyboard and were more tangible where I could get my hands on them, I would make a point to cause them some real harm over a damn game.
There’s your snack, now get back under your bridge.
Is this affecting people who just LAN, not play over live because that’s how my friends and I have been playing it.
If you only play LAN you should be fine, as you have to actually connect to an online game, usually a public room which will give you the virus, though luckily with gearbox sending the patch out to Microsoft the virus should be dealt with quickly.
Thanks, we weren’t going to play it (since we’re usually connected to live when we do) until we heard otherwise.
They got on that quick, good to see.
